Sinh Viên Trung Quốc Bị 'Ném Đá' vì Bài Phát Biểu Khai Mạc | Trung Quốc Không Kiểm Duyệt - Duration: 9:40.

On this episode of China Uncensored,

the pettiest fight you'll see on the internet all day,

that's saying something!

Hi, welcome to China Uncensored,

I'm your host Chris Chappell.

Meet Yang Shuping,

she was this year's student commencement speaker

at the University of Maryland.

And it's no wonder why,

when she came to the United States 5 years ago,

she didn't speak a word of English.

She just graduated with a double major in psychology and theater,

with a minor in German.

And to top it off, she now speaks fluent English.

Now you would think,

this would be a proud moment for Chinese international students,

one of their own singled out for achievement

at an American university.

Except when she had the spotlight,

she said some things about the differences between China and the United States

which were a little controversial.

It involved a student production of a play

about the beating of Rodney King and the LA riots of 1992.

The student actors were openly talking about racism sexism and politics.

I was shocked.

I never saw such topics to be discussed openly

I have always had a burning desire

to tell these kinds of stories.

But I was convinced

that only authorities own the narrative,

only authorities could define the truth.

You know I applaud Miss Yang for tackling some big topics in her speech

Of course, it's not quite as good as my own commencement speech

which was about how as we go on

we remember all the times we had together.

And about the importance of wearing sunscreen

and also staying hungry and foolish.

It was a pretty great speech.

But back to Miss Yang,

here was her key point.

Freedoms is oxygen,

freedom is passion.

And then Chinese internet users around the world...

exploded.

And believe me, those were the more polite comments

they were hard to find.

The speech also went viral on Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter.

The common theme was that she shouldn't come back to China

State-run media had a field day,

with article after article accusing her of belittling and degrading China.

And even worse convicted her of the worst crime imaginable,

being "deemed unpatriotic by cyber public opinion".

Wow, unpatriotic,

that was way harsh cyber public opinion.

This issue got so heated

that even China's foreign ministry had to step in.

This is what spokesman Lu Kang had to say.

Finsh her!

Ah, sorry wrong clip.

this was Liu Kang's actual response.

As long as in the end they still urgently love their motherland

and they're willing to make contributions for her

I believe that the Chinese government

will encourage, support and welcome it.

You see, as long as you wholeheartedly love the Chinese Communist Party

and do anything for it,

the Communist Party will encourage and welcomed it.

I think that's what he was trying to say.

People often ask me

why did you come to the University of Maryland?

I always answer:

fresh air

the air was so sweet and fresh

and oddly luxurious.

I was surprised by this.

I grew up in a city in China

where I had to wear a face mask every time I went outside,

otherwise I might get sick.

However, the moment I inhaled and exhaled outside the airport

I felt free.

What happened?

Is attacking someone for a speech on the other side of the world

somehow supposed to convince people

that China doesn't have a problem with freedom of speech

For more on this, I'm joined by China Uncensored z-resident Chinese person

Shelley Jang.

Shelley.

Hi Chris.

Now Shelley, I know talking about freedom of speech in China can be a big deal.

But Yang Shuping was speaking in America,

why are people so upset?

They weren't complaining about what she said about freedom of speech.

They, they weren't?

They didn't get mad because she said democracy and freedom

are the fresh air that is worth fighting for?

No, they were mad because she mentioned a different kind of fresh air.

Hold on, Chinese netizens are upset

that she complained about air pollution in China?

Yeah.

Chinese people aren't seriously denying

there's a pollution problem right?

Well, let's let state-run CGT in America explain it.

Some bashed her for degrading China

while others accused of telling outright lies about her hometown Kun Ming

a city in china's southwest Yunnan province,

known for its beautiful scenery and good air.

Wow,

Chinese state-run televisions use the promotional video

really gets across how beautiful KunMing is.

So, the argument is

yeah, well pollution isn't really that bad in that one city.

And I guess that if she's lying about the air quality and Kunming

that proves she's a lying liar,

who lies about China in general,

and to prove how out of touch Shuping is.

The local Chinese Students and Scholars Association

got together a group to talk about how much they love China.

What did they come up with?

This:

We are from University of Maryland, we are proud of China.

Nothing says freedom of thought like a group of people reciting a prepared speech

that someone else wrote.

Well, then there was a video of individual testimonials from Chinese students

Although I know that

United States is a very free-speaking country,

80% of what Shuping Yang said today

were deception and lies.

It goes into a montage of Chinese students talking about how nice their own hometowns are.

And that they never have to wear face masks there.

Well, that's a good Chinese tourism video

but doesn't prove that Yang Shuping was lying about wearing a facemask

or she has asthma,

or overprotective parents.

And interesting note,

although Kunming is today considered one of the cities with the best air quality in China,

five years ago, when Shuping left,

it didn't meet China's national air quality standards.

But to do an in-depth investigation into whether KunMing has great air,

state-run Xinhua News did an hour-long live stream on Twitter,

where they repeatedly stopped people on the street to ask if they ever wore face masks

That's the hard-hitting journalism I expect from Xinhua.

But this whole thing seemed kind of like an overreaction

Well Chris, I do have to say that

I understand where the Chinese students are coming from

Really.?

Sure, I came from China as a kid.

I was the only Chinese kid in my class,

I loved Chinese culture, I wanted Chinese sports teams to win

I was proud of being Chinese.

It was [either that or] just be hurt every time kids made ching chong noises at me

So you're saying that the Chinese students were justified

No, I'm saying I understand why they feel hurt

and why they want their Chinese identity to be respected

But, then they took that went so far into left-field

they can't even see the [ball park] anymore

There's an obsession with national pride

that's frankly a little unhealthy,

popular phrases like: "You're nothing without your motherland".

So people are mad at her because she was being ungrateful to her motherland

Well making the motherland look bad.

But really Shuping is not the one making China look bad right now.

The extreme reactions from Chinese people are keeping the story in the headlines,

and it's making us look weird.

I mean, Chinese netizens publicly bullied this girl

into shutting down all of her social media accounts

and abjectly apologizing

for using an air-quality metaphor to talk about her love of individual freedoms.

Should we be proud of this?

Is the motherland triumphant now that this one voice has been squashed?

This type of nationalistic anger that won't be satisfied until someone has made an example of

is an unfortunate legacy of the Chinese Communist Party

But, here's what Shuping did wrong

and some of the criticisms of her even say this bluntly.

She can feel the way she wants to about freedom and democracy

and how great it is to be able to express individual viewpoints.

Or even how crappy the air is in Kunming,

she just isn't supposed to say it out loud

publicly.

So your opinion is fine as long as you don't express it

Wait, aren't you concerned about getting attacked for expressing that publicly?

Chris, I fully expect the flame war in the comment section

to burn brighter than the Sun

Well, if there's one piece of advice I could give you Shelley,

it would be: "Wear sunscreen".

So what do you think about what Shuping Yang said and the reaction?

Leave your comments below,

once again I'm your host Chris Chappell.

See you next time

Video: Heavy rain on tap; sun returns tomorrow - Duration: 2:53.

>> GOOD TUESDAY TO YOU, I'M

METEOROLOGIST CINDY FITZGIBBON,

STILL RAINING OUT THERE AND LOOK

AT THE RAIN TOTALS SINCE

YESTERDAY, OVER 3.5 INCHES ON

THE CAPE.

MARSHFIELD 2.5, OVER A COUPLE OF

INCHES IN WELLESLEY.

DEDHAM AND HAVERHILL AND BOSTON

ALL COMING IN BETWEEN AN INCH

AND INCH AND A HALF OF RAIN SO

WE HAVE HAD A GOOD SOAKING HERE

AND WE ARE NOT DONE YET.

WE HAVE GOT ONE AREA OF LOW

PRESSURE CUTTING OUT TO THE

SOUTH AND THE UPPER LEVEL PART

OF THIS STORM IS GOING TO KIND

OF HANG BACK SO THAT IS GOING TO

KEEP THE RAIN GOING.

BUT THIS LOW HAS BEEN KICKING UP

THE WINDS, WE'RE SEEING SOME

GUSTS OVER 30 MILES PER HOUR,

NOW THE WINDS ARE GOING TO STEP

DOWN A BIT OVER THE COURSE OF

THE DAY.

THEY ARE GOING TO BE OUT OF THE

NORTHEAST 15 TO 20 TO 25 MILES

PER HOUR.

THAT IS GOING TO KEEP THE

TEMPERATURES DOWN.

SO WE'RE GOING TO SEE THOSE

TEMPERATURES HOLD BASICALLY

STEADY THROUGHOUT THE DAY, AND

LOOK AT THIS.

UPPER 40s TO AROUND

50 DEGREES, AND NOW AT MIDNIGHT

IN BOSTON, IT WAS 52, AND THAT

IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE WE GO

BACK IN THE RECORD BOOKS AND YOU

LOOK, THE COOLEST, HIGH

TEMPERATURE WE HAVE EVER HAD ON

JUNE 6 IN BOSTON WAS 52, AND

THAT'S WHERE WE WERE AT

MIDNIGHT, AND THAT RECORD TIES

FROM 1926 IN WORCESTER, SO FAR,

THE HIGH HAS BEEN 49, AND I

DON'T THINK THAT WE'RE GOING TO

GET ANY HIGHER, THAT BEATS THE

OLD RECORD OF 51, SO THIS IS NOT

NORMAL.

WE'LL SEE THE TEMPERATURES MAYBE

SNEAK INTO THE LOWER 50s DOWN

HERE ON THE CAPE BUT THAT IS

STILL A GOOD 20 DEGREES BELOW

AVERAGE FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.

SO IT IS COOL, AND IT IS RAW,

AND WE HAVE GOT THAT WET WEATHER

AROUND, YOU CAN SEE THE STEADIER

RAIN THROUGH LUNCHTIME AND INTO

THE AFTERNOON THIS HEAVIER RAIN

OFF TO THE WEST IS GOING TO

SHIFT IN AND FILL IN SO THE RAIN

GETS A LITTLE HEAVIER FOR THAT

EVENING COMMUTE, AND IT WILL

ONLY SLOWLY TAPER OFF AS WE GET

CLOSER TO MIDNIGHT, AND WE'LL

DRY THINGS OUT AFTER MIDNIGHT

BEFORE THE SUN COMES UP

TOMORROW.

AND LOW TEMPERATURES TONIGHT

HOLD IN THE 40s TO NEAR 50,

AND TOMORROW, IS BETTER.

WE'RE IN THE 60s NEAR THE

COASTLINE WITH THE LIGHT

NORTHEASTERLY WIND, AND LOOK AT

THAT, UP THROUGH THE MERRIMACK

VALLEY WE COULD SNEAK UP INTO

THE LOWER 70s.

CLOUDS EARLY ON AND FROM NORTH

TO SOUTH THE SKIES CLEAR, SUN

RETURNS, GETS BRIGHTER AS THE

HIGH PRESSURE NOSES DOWN.

THAT'S GOING TO PUT US IN GOOD

SHAPE ON THURSDAY AS WELL.

IT LOOKS MOSTLY SUNNY.

LOTS OF LOWER 70s BUT LOOK

WHAT HAPPENS NOW.

WE GO FROM THURSDAY ON INTO

FRIDAY, AND LET'S SEE IF I CAN

SHOW YOU THIS, THERE IS GOING TO

BE A STORM, IT APPEARS THAT I

CAN'T POP THAT OUT BUT THERE IT

IS.

THERE IS GOING TO BE A STORM

HERE, GOING BY OUT TO THE SEA,

AND IT MAY COME CLOSE ENOUGH NOW

THAT IT WILL BRING US A PERIOD

OF RAIN ON FRIDAY, SO FRIDAY NOW

DOES LOOK LIKE WE WILL GET SOME

RAINFALL.

BEHIND IT, THOUGH, SOUTHWESTERLY

WINDS ARE REALLY GOING TO START

IT PICK UP.

SO THE TEMPERATURES COME UP.

SATURDAY IT LOOKS DRY.

WELL INTO THE 70s.

JUMPING UP INTO THE 80s HERE

ON SUNDAY AND BY MONDAY OF NEXT

New Office 365 Groups Reporting and More with Sharegate - Duration: 2:12.

Hi everyone,

I'm JP from Sharegate

and I'm really excited to be here today

to show you the new features being deployed with Sharegate version 5.19.

Currently, when you run a report you're able to consult, to export and even edit some settings of your data

but that was pretty much it.

So what we wanted to do here was to bring the whole quick actions panel from the explorer

right to the results of your reports so that we're able to edit, to delete items,

and also to run other reports over your items and also of course, manage the permissions over those objects

Last month we added a delete button in the explorer

which allows you to delete pretty much everything you want in your SharePoint environment

but, you weren't allowed to do it over documents, folders, or list items

I just ran a new report here, and as you can see

since the quick panel has been brought to the reports section, you're not able to delete documents or list items

Also, as you'll see over at the edit button, you're not able to change the content approval status of items

and even to enter a new comment when you do so.

Over the last few months, we added more key features to manage and secure your Office 365 groups,

and guess what? We're not done!

This time, we're giving you the ability to search for your Office 365 groups right in the reports section

so that way you can get all the information you want about that.

Pretty cool, right?

So that's what's new with the reporting section of Sharegate

So let's take a look at what's new in the migration part of it!

As you might know, Microsoft is now allowing two new special characters in the URLs.

So we want to make sure that this is fully supported when migrating items

but to do so, you have to enable this feature by going under File, Options.

and then under Illegal Characters you'll be able to enable the feature right here.

So that's what Sharegate 5.19 has to offer!

I hope you'll enjoy the new features as much as I do, I know I'll use them on a daily basis.

Oh and by the way, stay tuned for the next release in a few weeks, cheers!

Best Of Schmidt | Season 1 | NEW GIRL - Duration: 2:12.

But, I mean, can we just take a moment to celebrate me?

[music playing]

[exhales]

Being friends with Schmidt is really complicated.

Parkour!

'Cause you want to change him so badly.

But you can't, 'cause he'll just get worse.

Parkour!

An after-birth ain't an after-birth

without some Schmidt up in there.

Want to see me flex my base?

- No, no, no, no, no, no. - Let me flex my base.

- Put your shirt on. - Let me flex my base, man.

Boom-boom. - Put your shirt on.

It's the morning.

I feel like I'm being licked by a Golden Retriever.

Oh, God.

That's not my penis.

Happy birthday, Schmidt.

I'm 29, folks. (LOW TONE) 29.

Can you please not tell anybody I just did that.

I got that prime rib, yo.

[exhales] Parkour!

Three words-- double-bag it.

I'm pulling in them buckets.

Quite the baker.

When I see you, I want to be thinking,

who let the dirty slut out of the slut house?

Mhm.

I made your necklaces.

[musical groaning] Same page?

Same page?

[groaning] It's a horrible neighborhood, OK?

There are youths everywhere.

[whistle]

[screams] (PANICKED) No, no.

No, Jess, no.

I'm like a Marine.

You're nothing like a Marine.

I'm totally like a Marine.

[grunts]

You lost your kite!

Have fun flying your string all day.

My tires were stolen by street youths.

Youths.

I don't like the roof, man.

There's a cat up here.

It's crazy.

It was raised by birds.

I'm a warrior poet.

And the fact that you were wearing pajamas in the presence

of your lover tells me that that relationship

was doomed from the start.

Watch this.

Boom, blam, boom.

Parkour.

And 4,000.

Just, you know, slide me like a curtain.

There you go. I'm good.

I'm good.

Apollo, oh, no.

When's it coming out, by the way?

The earring?

No, no, no, the smooth jazz album you're dropping.

You're listening to the radio and writing with a pen?

What decade are we in?

So nectar.

Did you just make up "nectar"?

No, it's a volleyball term.

Schmidt happens.

[smack]

Ow.

What was on your hand?

Thumb ring, bitch.

You got some Schmidt on your face.

10 EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES WE REALLY LOVE - Are You BRAVE enough To RIDE #9? - Duration: 10:14.

10 Emerging Technologies we can't wait to see more of

#10 Gravity - human propulsion technology

Gravity has invented a human propulsion technology that re-imagines manned flight.

The technology combines body mounted miniaturized jet-engines with a specially designed exo-skeleton

allowing vertical take off and flight.

The jet-engine suit is pioneering an entirely new category in aviation history.

I wonder if they have it in 3XL.

Gravity – Human Propulsion Technology

#9 WingBoard –

Meet the WingBoard: it's like a wakeboard, but instead of slicing through waves behind

a boat, you're carving through the clouds behind a plane.

Whether it's wakeboarding, gliding, skydiving, wing walking, or flying with a wingsuit, adventure

enthusiasts continue to push the envelope.

The WingBoard takes the thrill of these adventure sports to another dimension, combining the

exhilaration of prolonged flight with the rush that comes when you're in control.

And don't worry, if you fall, just get up and do it again.

Wingboard.

#8 Hololens by Microsoft

Air New Zealand has recently revealed it's been working with Dimension Data to use the

mixed reality Hololens as a way of enhancing its cabin crew services.

The airline's project is still at an experimental stage, but it demonstrates an interesting

implementation of the technology.

When looking at a passenger, the HoloLens allows the flight attendant to immediately

get a display of their details, preferred meal, travel plans and even the time elapsed

since their last drink.

Some work is being done on detecting a passenger's emotional state, possibly through facial expressions

or heart rate detection.

As an early demonstration of how the HoloLens could be applied in real-life this is a compelling

case for the device's existence.

#7 OMNI HOVERBOARD

Looks like we're catching up to the future.

The Omni Hoverboard is here.

Well almost here.

It's inventor, Alex Duru holds the Guinness World Record for the farthest hoverboad flight:

905 feet, 2 inches.

The flight lasted 11⁄2 minutes.

Not exactly a full day of Hoverboarding, but we all have to start somewhere.

Duru and his team are now developing a second prototype that's sleeker, more powerful,

and safe enough for an eager public.

He plans for it to be ready for distribution this year.

So keep looking up for the Hoverboard

#6 icaros

The ICAROS setup is wireless, quick and easy.

The system includes the ICAROS device, controller and a VR headset.

Choose from mind-blowing VR experiences such as flying, diving or free falling.

Alone or in multiplayer, in the sky, underwater, on the racetrack or in space.

ICAROS offers unique experiences.

All experiences feature several difficulty levels and duration's optimized for the use

in fitness or entertainment environments.

#5 PAL Robotics

Dubai will soon be patrolled by crime-fighting droids.

These kinda creepy looking droids will come equipped with face-scanning technology able

to scan faces from 20 meters away, and tablets mounted in their chests to take crime reports.

You'll also be able to pay traffic fines.

They won't say whether or not these robo-officers will come with donuts, but time will tell.

These crime-fighting droid will make up one QUARTER of the city's police force by 2030.

PAL robotics.

#4 SR3 – BY Solar Roadways

Solar panels that you can drive, park and walk on.

They melt snow & cut greenhouse gases by 75% ?!!!

Imagine our highways providing enough solar energy to power much of the U.S.

The company was founded in 2006 by Scott and Julie Brusaw,

They envisioned replacing asphalt surfaces with structurally-engineered solar panels

capable of withstanding vehicular traffic.

The proposed system would require a type of glass that doesn't exist yet, but they're

working on that.

In the meantime the cost estimate of $10,000 for a 12×12-foot section, would cost approximately

$56 trillion to replace all the roads in the U.S.

#3 eSight eyewear:

eSight 3 is an engineering breakthrough that allows the legally blind to actually see.

eSight houses a high-speed, high-definition camera that captures everything the user is

looking at.

Special algorithms enhance the video feed and display it on two, OLED screens in front

of the user's eyes.

Full color video images are clearly seen by the user with unprecedented visual clarity

and virtually no lag.

With eSight's patented Bioptic Tilt capability, users can adjust the device to the precise

position that, for them, presents the best view of the video while maximizing side peripheral

vision.

This ensures a user's balance and prevents nausea – common problems with other immersive

technologies.

Take a look at eSight.

#2 Avegant Glyph - Video Headset

A single HDMI input means youcan play directly from any computer or gaming console and any

tablet or smartphone with simple adapters.

How good is the screen?

So good it doesn't need one.

Avegant's Patented Retinal Imaging Technology mimics natural eyesight through LED projection

onto millions of microscopic mirrors.

It's not watching; it's seeing.

Fully adjustable optics compensate for most prescriptions, meaning you can enjoy extended

viewing without the need for glasses.

Streaming video, downloaded content, console gaming, you name it.

No special software needed.

The cost?

About $500.

Avegant Glyph Video Headset

#1 PassivDom modulOne

It's an off-grid 3D-printed gadget house.

It's Smartphone controlled:

3 Ways to Grow Yourself - Duration: 5:55.

Hi! I'm Sharon Jurd and welcome to my Biz Blitz video.

Today I want to talk about growing yourself because if you don't grow yourself then your business can't grow either.

So you've got to make sure that you are continually evolving so you can evolve

the business and this is really important.

In my one-on-one coaching with people, even though I am situated as a "business coach"

not a lot of business coaching, it is about people coaching because once your mindset

is set up right to go then you can easily be coached in business.

So what I do is start off with "Where's your mindset, where's your headspace,

what are those voices saying in your head?" because if can't grow past those then your business won't either.

So it's important to start with yourself.

But firstly, what you have to do is be honest about where you are actually at.

If those little voices in your head are saying, "You'll never earn a million dollars",

then you'll never earn a million dollars. So you've got to be really, really honest with yourself and say, "I'm in a bad headspace.

I can chant all day and say positive affirmations but really those voices

in my headare overpowering me or I have these beliefs that won't allow me to move forward.

Secondly, you have to actually get clear where you want to be.

Is it a million dollars that you want to earn? Is it a million people you want to reach?

Is it something that you want to do internationally or nationally rather than locally?

You have to have absolute clarity on where you want to end up.

Now that can change along the way but right now you need to go,

"This is where I'm at right now and this is what I want to achieve",

because if that's not clear to you then you will definitely not be able to grow yourself and move forward.

And lastly, then once you've got that clear, even if you haven't got it quite clear

but you're getting close you need helparound this.

If you go, "I've thought about it, I don't know where I want to be because

my beliefs or values or voices in my head will not allow me to think that I could possibly earn a million dollars."

Then you need to get help. And we all need to get help to grow ourself.

You can't grow yourself without listening to someone, watching their videos like you're doing now,

getting coaching, getting their online programs, getting their products. You have to have help around you to grow yourself.

And personal growth should be a never-ending journey. You can't say, "I'll read these books and I'm grown."

You have to keep growing. So you learn something new,

learn something newer and then you learn something newer and all the time you're growing yourself.

And I would say to you during this growth phase, if you are in a true growth phase is to write down,

just a little journal in point forms.

When I go through a huge growth phase I start jotting down things that are changing my life so I can monitor

those because what happens is you get a few months down the track and go, "I still feel the same",

because I'm still the same Sharon that I was 20 years ago but I have different beliefs, values and mindset.

But you don't feel that you're a different person.

You just behave differently and have a different outlook on things.

And so some of those changes even though they are major changes,

you might not see them because you're too busy in your everyday life so I would jot them down and it's so exciting to look back on.

When I wrote my book I started doing my little journal and I don't journal heavy, mine are just notes,

doesn't have to be a big essay but I could look back and I could see all the achievements

and all the changes and all the exciting things that happened to me during the course of me writing my book.

The first time someone sent me some mail saying, "Sharon Jurd Author"

that was an exciting time for me. It was something so little but really it changed my mindset going, "I am an author.

Someone's acknowledging me as an author." So make sure you do that because it's really, really rewarding.

To recap, to make sure that you grow yourself before your business because you need to be in front of your business,

Be honest with yourself, make sure you know exactly where you're at, where's your headspace

at and then get clear on where you want to be. What was your goal when you first opened your business?

What did you want to achieve and then get some help around you.

Good coaches will always help you get even more clarity than you have now.

So that's my points for you today. Go out, never stop growing.

Please, please educated yourself; learn from people, watch videos, listen to audios, go to seminars,

do all of that so you can implement that into your life and into your business and you will change so dramatically,

it will happen so fast you probably won't even notice it yourself.

I'm Sharon Jurd. I really do appreciate you joining me today.

If you believe that this video would be of value to your family, your friends or your colleagues please share it with them.

I want to share my message with as many people as I can

and I'm hoping that you'll be able to help me do that.

Thank you again for spending some time with me. I'm Sharon Jurd and we'll talk soon.

Eating TULUM FOOD - tacos + nachos & biking to TULUM BEACH | Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico - Duration: 11:25.

We're in Tulum, it's a beach day but first it's time for breakfast tacos.

We found a little placed called El Paisa and they serve cochinita pibil. Cochinita pibil is baby

pig which has been cooked in an earth oven so underground and it's basically

slow-cooked pork. The pork has been marinated in sour orange juice as well

as annatto which gives it the orange color. I've loaded my taco up and I'm going in

Mmmmm The pork is so flavoursome and so tender

we hear these guys prepare their pigs the night before in a village outside of

Tulum and then they bring them in every morning at about 5 a.m. to get ready for their

customers, so good. I reckon this is some of the best

cochinita pibil that we have ever had it's really rich in flavor it doesn't

look very saucy but it's got so much omph to it, it's really like, one

bite is really really intense. That is a great way to start the day

as always we'll put restaurant details below. Now we're staying up in Tulum town

I'm not sure Sheena mentioned that so not down on the beach so Tulum's kind

of known as three different areas the ruins, the beach and the town, we're staying

in the town purely because it's a quite a lot cheaper than staying at the beach

the beach is about seven kilometers away. But we also wanted to be close to good

local food, yeah we haven't actually explored the beach yet so from what we

hear it's all just pretty touristy so the food up here is really good but we

need to get to the beach so we're going to find some push bikes and go down to

the beach. Noble steeds secured cue quick montage to the beach whoa

oh no she had a crash. I was trying to be smart and follow Thomas who went up onto the

footpath and I took it too late. Ow! Oh what did you do? I think I sprained my

groin, uh oh! We've arrived at the beach but take that very loosely we basically

haven't seen the beach there's just resort after resort we've driven maybe 6 or 7k

along the road which goes along the beach and... it's not that nice....and we saw it once, one little glimpse and

the whole place smells like rotting seaweed or something it's kind of gross

it's a shame when you can't see the water because it's all taken up by private property,

private private private private huge fence, guys with guns stopping you going through

it's not very nice so far at all, it feels like we've done a session of Bikram yoga

I can't open our eyes because they're so full of sweat not that we're

complaining about that it's lovely to be warm if there is a place we think we can

get to the beach it's meant to open at 12 it's now about five past 12, it's not open

We'll wait and see, there are some other people waiting. Oh my god I literally can't see. Ow.

So basically I read about this taco joint called La Eufemia and you can come here

and order beers and tacos and then you can just basically claim your table. It was really the only place we could see

where you can get direct access to the beach. So we've got our table, we're going to order a beer and

we're just going to sit here for the whole afternoon

it's a taco kind of a day we've ordered battered fish tacos and god

do they look good. We're just about to enjoy these tacos and I I just got showered in about

six bottles of cerveza. The poor waiter took a dive, I wore every single bottle

but luckily the ocean's right there so I just jumped in the ocean cleaned off, taco

time

Beach time done. It was gorgeous. It was nice. Tacos were really good. I think because they

dropped all that beer on me we scored some prawn tacos and an al pastor taco. Thomas was

very happy. Super happy with the prawn ones they were amazing and the fish was

really moist and delicious. But I don't like Tulum, do you like Tulum?

It doesn't feel like Mexico really. It doesn't feel like Mexico. it' doesn't feel

like us. Not keen. We've been talking about perhaps skeedadling, yeah we're going to go home

look at a map and figure out where we can go because it's just it's not us at

all it's wrong, it's weird you've got this beautiful beach that no

one can get to unless you pay money, it's very commercialized and we don't want to end

our Mexico adventure on that note. So not wanting to sound gloomy, it's still beautiful

we're not, we're not saying it's not stunning, it was stunning

but we're questioning being here so we're going to jump on our bikes shoot back to

town figure out what to do we'll see you there

how good does a fresh shower feel after the beach. But we forgot to take the

sunscreen to the beach and now we are fried. Poo watch out! Poo on the ground not

calling Sheena a poo. So yeah we are a bit redder than we we should be whoops we're

back to to Tulum town so this is where we're staying this is where we rode

from this morning where we had that amazing breakfast this morning we like

it a lot more here it might not have an epic beach but it is a cool proper

little town we're going to go find us some dinner

We're at El Camello Jr. which is a seafood restaurant located on the Tulum highway

they are really well known for their really big platters of ceviche they have brought over some

frijoles to start and some tortilla chips and this is probably some of the best frijoles we've had in all of Mexico. It's warm, it's got a bit of a kick and it's

super creamy. The food has arrived get a load of the shrimp nachos. This is the first time

we've seen nachos on any menu in Mexico in the nearly two months that

we've been here so we had to order them. They look pretty epic. Sorry about the

background music this happens all the time in Mexico

someone just starts playing music, it's great but sorry about the audio

So it's basically tortilla chips, with frijoles which are black beans that have been cooked with

spices and then pureed, shrimp and cheese.

It feels so wrong but it's really good so it's really just basic flavours- shrimp, cheese, tortilla chips and beans. It's really good.

So we ordered a mixto ceviche. Ceviche is fish that has been cooked in acid. In this case

I think it's been cooked in lime. It's got onions, tomatoes, coriander, a heap of black pepper which is delicious

in ceviche here and I can spot shrimp, octopus, fish and I think some squid. I'm going to add some chilli. This looks quite watery, it's a green chilli. It looks quite spicy but

I love it on ceviche

The seafood is really tender up it still has a bit of chew so it's not mushy. The squid especially

is a really great texture. The tomatoes are really fresh, the chilli is very spicy but it adds to it, it doesn't overwhelm the seafood. It's moy bueno.

As Sheena mentioned this dish feels so wrong but so right it's so nice I just can't stop eating it

there's so much I'm already full because this place, t it's hard to give

scale but this thing is humongous and it's just so surprisingly tasty. What a win!

that was a really good dinner. I'm super stuffed. But god, so full. The ceviche was good but it wasn't as good as

the ceviche we had on Holbox yeah a few vlogs you would have seen on

the beach wow it was good and it didn't quite live up to but it was really good

to try the mixed one and I loved the nachos even though they were super weird

I really liked trying them. Now we did discuss earlier and over dinner about

our thoughts of Tulum and what we're going to do we're still not quite sure

so make sure you jump down below hit subscribe to find out in coming vlogs

what decision we make re Tulum we think we might move on but we're just

trying to work that out still. We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore

like a traveler, not a tourist. Thanks for watching. Adios!

Liberty Chronicles, Ep. 6: The Road from Serfdom...to Corporatism - Duration: 21:00.

Anthony Comegna: So far, we've established several working principles to guide our exploration

of the past.

Individual actions are motivated by perceived self-interest.

When we shift our historical perspectives from one actor to another, we change the facts

of the past as well.

Both Marxism and classical liberalism are concerned with the social exercise of individual

power and the resultant class [00:00:30] conflicts.

Only individuals act, and our understanding of social units should build from individuals.

Finally, conspiracies between individuals are fundamental to social experience.

We have some decent tools in our grasp by now, so let's start digging.

This is Liberty Chronicles, a project of libertarianism.org.

I'm Anthony Comegna.

[00:01:00] We'll begin our pursuit of liberty and power with an overview of the state of

the world around 1400.

The year makes for a good benchmark standing, as it does, firmly within the late medieval

period, but beckoning so obviously to the transformational century or two just ahead.

In North and South America, trading networks linked peoples across the continents into

a fantastically diverse, agriculturally [00:01:30] productive, culturally vibrant landscape.

In 1492, the population within current US borders was roughly four to 12 million, and

on both continents 40 to 120 million, which was about equal with Europe.

Plenty have wondered then, why did not the Indians put up a better fight or why did we

not see Incan armadas bombarding the Spanish coast, unleashing wave after wave of galloping

American knights?

[00:02:00] Well, for one thing, they had nothing to gallop with.

As biologist Jared Diamond famously argued, the Native Americans' geographic isolation

from the rest of the world prevented the diffusion of animal and plant species, as well as technology.

Geography also prevented the American population from building immunity to a wide variety of

diseases that Westerners carried with them across the ocean.

We're often pushed to essentialize Native Americans as a single [00:02:30] cultural

blob of new age metaphysical beliefs and religious practices, or as the unfortunate casualties

of unstoppable modernization, but natives were in fact fantastically diverse in culture,

political organization, philosophical and religious beliefs, and the practices of daily

life.

Native Americans did not live in some idealized harmony with nature this is a modern conception,

imposed upon the past for our own [00:03:00] self-serving purposes in the present nor

did the natural world or the natural laws of technological progress ever condemned natives

to extinction.

That tragedy was, once again, a fact of history and human action, not nature and random circumstance.

As we will see, however, indigenous societies continued to offer powerful sociocultural

and political alternatives to the European empires.

In [00:03:30] Africa too many tens of millions clustered densely together in complex civilizations.

These societies maintained vigorous links with one another, North to South across the

Sahara Desert, and East to West by river and coastal trade.

African kingdoms and empires were some of the most powerful, wealthy and highly educated

in world history.

Africans enjoyed relative isolation from the rest of Afro-Eurasia and enough contact to

bring the benefits of cultural and biological diffusion.

Great and [00:04:00] powerful empires set astride complex kin-based networks of village

chieftains, only loosely connected through language and culture.

Much like feudal Europe and Native America, Africa was an endlessly complicated patchwork

of linguist, political and cultural groups often exercising interlocking and overlapping

authority.

In Asia, the world's largest populations crowded into the largest and most complicated cities.

Ruling elites enjoyed [00:04:30] the planet's richest trade routes, and luxuriated in a

host of expensive and exotic goods.

Before Western Europe shot so far ahead in economic productivity, East Asian total wealth

towered above most other sectors of the human population.

Even after the Mongol conquests and the black death, China's Ming dynasty was strong enough

to fund several exploratory and trading expeditions reaching all the way to coastal East Africa.

Fearing the rise of a new [00:05:00] merchant capitalist class with power independent of

the crown and preoccupied with military problems in Inter-Asia, the Yongle Emperor ceased the

Zheng He voyages to maintain a continental focus.

While China remained an expansionist imperial power of its own, perfectly capable of repelling

European aggression for several centuries yet, the emperors never seriously reconsidered

transoceanic state craft again.

In Europe, the late feudal [00:05:30] population was relatively small, having been devastated

by the plague.

They were relatively poor and relatively uneducated.

Compared to their contemporaries in the Ottoman and Ming empires, which were probably the

two strongest states of the period, 15th century Europeans lived rather sheltered in small

lives.

To most of the population, Europe was really nothing other than the same village they had

always known and perhaps never left.

The wealthy and urban populations [00:06:00] may have had a greater sense of the wider

worlds.

Hundreds of cities and statelets connected together through trade and during the high

medieval period, wealth became heavily concentrated in a new mercantile class, but then the black

death so depressed the supply of labor that wage rates spiked and aristocrats faced generational

debt.

Couple that with the Ottoman consolidation of the near East into a single massive tariff

wall and wealthy Europeans needed a way out of declining incomes.

[00:06:30] In their search for a way out of stagnant feudalism, wealthy individuals channeled

their investment into overseas trade and settlement.

The landed gentry enclosed private and common fields alike over the centuries, and peasants

now deprived of the ability to produce their own subsistence steadily learned to sell their

labor for wages or clustered hopelessly in urban slums.

The transition from feudalism to what we may call capitalism was a mucky, [00:07:00] murky,

often nasty process, the benefits of which were very unevenly distributed, or too far

in the future to be appreciated by actors at the time.

Feudalism is a society in which peasants cultivate lands for a lord or noble, providing production

in exchange for food stores during famine, for example, and protection.

Labor was a social obligation owed from one class to the other by virtue [00:07:30] of

natural order.

Capitalism, by contrast, is marked by the treatment of labor as a commodity and the

dissolution of the old social bonds.

Rather than the feudal model in which social bonds connect peasant and lord into a web

of reciprocal obligations, the capitalist model is based on the productive capacity

of each participant and a free and open market for that labor.

No longer bound by the social obligations of the manor, laborers [00:08:00] in a capitalist

society are free to seek those occupations which offer the highest returns for their

labor inputs, and employers are free to hire and fire at will for whatever wage the market

will bear.

In the long run, the pay off and wealth produced is astounding.

In the short run, however, wage laborers were now entirely at the whims of the vast and

swirling impersonal marketplace dominated by a class of industrial and imperial titans.

Feudalism granted [00:08:30] to noblemen an almost endless list of rights and privileges,

all of which had some theoretical relationship to his position as steward over the social

hierarchy.

To raise some quick funds, monarchs often offloaded these rights and privileges to others.

Besides, being king or queen, like being president, is really, really hard.

Everyone has so many expectations, all of which are impossible for a single will to

satisfy.

To avoid rebellion, revolution, tyrannicide, [00:09:00] court intrigue and any number of

other potential pitfalls, monarchs granted away the burdens of rule to private enterprisers.

For example, though he possessed sole mining rights, a king might grant certain wealthy

and skilled subjects the authority to own and operate a mining corporation.

The new institutions would be given a legal life bestowed with certain chunks of the monarch's

own body of special powers.

Ultimately, our modern concept and institution of the [00:09:30] corporation dates back to

this very sort of privilege granting, and this fact is both tremendously important and

overlooked in contemporary libertarian thinking.

The corporate charter was supposed to be a clear delineation of the rights and privileges

of specific individuals, especially empowered and privileged by the monarch to do business

X, Y or Z, but in the context of new world discovery and settlement, corporations went

well beyond the domestic tasks of mining, building [00:10:00] bridges, banking and the

like.

Companies of adventurers, investors, merchant explorers and settlers soon proliferated around

the globe, each armed with a litany of legal powers once reserved to the monarch, now lovely

distributed to his pets.

Corporations were, in effect, extensions of the royal body, and so free market capitalism,

so called, has never really existed.

What we call capitalism and portray with a [00:10:30] romantic, loving glow, was in fact

brutish corporatism, a steadily intensifying merger of the state in private or local life.

Overtime, the new class of corporate capitalists and the empires of which they were parts forcibly

absorbed the process of economic and social production and reproduction, controlling the

means by which people and societies could support themselves, grow and expand.

Take for example [00:11:00] Ferdinand and Isabella's original charter to Columbus.

The explorer Conquistador and his sailors would provide the skilled labor in exchange

for the monarch's backing.

The rulers welcomed Columbus into their own social class, granting he and his descendants

near absolute authority and ownership over vast portions of the New World.

Don Columbus took to his new position well, immediately enslaving indigenous Tainos and

acting as a vicious dictator over his new [00:11:30] lands.

Or there's the charter Elizabeth I granted to Sir Walter Raleigh in 1584.

Raleigh and his conspirators are not merely granted the right to explore, settle, conquer,

subdue and rule in the Queen's name, she actually commissions them as pirates against her own

enemies.

Business and statecraft blended together into a single institutional framework.

Or there was the extremely broad birth given to the proprietors of Virginia [00:12:00]

in the colony's first charter.

King James grants the proprietors an absolutely mammoth portion of land considering the standard

European plots at the time.

Along with the land, they're granted absolute rights over virtually everything there.

In exchange for granting this small portion of his personal domain, James' government

will get a cut of the revenue and retain the absolute allegiance of all subjects in Virginia.

Speaker 2: The First [00:12:30] Charter of Virginia, April 10, 1606.

"James, by the Grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, Defender of

the Faith, and whereas our loving and well-disposed subjects, Sir Thorn as Gales, and Sir George

Somers, Knights, Richard Hackluit, Clerk, Prebendary of Westminster, and Edward-Maria

Wingfield, Thomas Hanharm and Ralegh Gilbert, Esquires William Parker, and George [00:13:00]

Popham, Gentlemen, and divers others of our loving subjects, have been humble suitors

unto us, that we would vouchsafe unto them our license to make habitation, plantation,

and to deduce a colony of sundry of our people into that part of America commonly called

Virginia, and other parts of territories in America, either appertaining unto us or which

are not now actually possessed by any Christian prince or people.

[00:13:30] To that end, and for the more speedy accomplishment of their said intended plantation

and habitation there, are desirous to defend themselves into two several colonies and companies;

the one consisting of certain knights, gentlemen, merchants, and other adventurers, of our City

of London and elsewhere, which are and from time to time shall be, joined unto them, which

do desire to begin their plantation and habitation.

And the other consisting of sundry [00:14:00] knights, gentlemen, merchants, and other adventurers,

of our Cities of Bristol and Exeter, and of our Town of Plymouth, and of other places,

which do join themselves unto that colony.

We, greatly commending, graciously accepting of, their Desires for the furtherance of so

noble a work, which may, by the Providence of Almighty God, hereafter tend to the glory

of his divine Majesty, in propagating of Christian religion [00:14:30] to such people as yet

live in darkness and miserable ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God, and

may in time bring the infidels and savages, living in those parts, to human civility,

and to a settled and quiet Government: do, by these our Letters Patents, graciously accept

of, and agree to, their humble and well-intended Desires; and do therefore, for us, our heirs,

and successors, [00:15:00] grant and agree, that the said Sir Thomas Gates, Sir George

Somers, Richard Hackluit, and Edward-Maria Wingfield, adventurers of and for our City

of London, and all such others, as are or shall be joined unto them of that Colony,

shall be called the first Colony.

They shall and may begin their said first plantation and habitation at any place upon

the said Coast of Virginia or America where they shall [00:15:30] think fit and convenient.

That they shall have all the lands, woods, soil, grounds, havens, ports, rivers, mines,

minerals, marshes, waters, fishings, commodities, and hereditaments, whatsoever, from the said

first seat of their plantation and habitation by the space of fifty miles.

We do likewise for the other second Colony, and that none of our subjects shall be permitted

[00:16:00] or suffered to plant or inhabit behind, or on the back of them towards the

main Land, without the express license or consent of the council of that colony, in

writing thereunto first had and obtained.

We do also ordain, establish, and agree, for us, our heirs and successors, that each of

the said Colonies shall have a Council of 13 members, which shall govern and order all

matters and causes, and that also there shall be a council established here in England,

[00:16:30] which shall in like manner consist of 13 persons, to be for that purpose appointed

by us, our heirs and successors, which shall be called our Council of Virginia; and shall,

from time to time, have the superior managing and direction, only of and for all Matters

that shall or may concern the Government, as well of the said several Colonies, as of

and for any other part or place within the aforesaid precincts.

Moreover, [00:17:00] we do grant and agree for us, our heirs and successors that that

the said several Councils of and for the said several Colonies shall and lawfully may, by

virtue hereof, from time to time, without any interruption of us, our heirs or successors,

give and take order, to dig, mine, and search for all manner of mines of gold, silver, and

copper, as well within any part of their said [00:17:30] several Colonies, as of the said

main Lands on the backside of the same Colonies; and to have and enjoy the gold, silver, and

copper, to be gotten thereof, to the use and behoof of the same Colonies, and the plantations

thereof.

Yielding therefore to us, our heirs and successors, the fifth part only of all the same gold and

silver, and the fifteenth part of all the same copper.

Every of them shall [00:18:00] and may have, take, and lead such and so many of our subjects

as shall willingly accompany them or any of them in the said voyages and plantations.

Also we do, for us, our heirs, and successors, declare by these presents, that all and every

the persons being our subjects, which shall dwell and inhabit within every or any of the

said several Colonies and plantations, and every of their children, which shall [00:18:30]

happen to be born within any of the limits and precincts of the said several colonies

and plantations, shall have and enjoy all liberties, franchises, and immunities, within

any of our other dominions, to all intents and purposes, as if they had been abiding

and born, within this our realm of England, or any other of our said dominions.

Anthony Comegna: Finally, the Dutch example is [00:19:00] illustrative and suggestive.

During the same decades as England's West Country men were establishing corporate capitalist,

imperialist hells on earth, the Habsburg family territories in Northern Europe rebelled against

their Spanish overlords.

The Dutch tended to view Spain's most Catholic King, Philip II, as a cruel outsider and an

interloper in their comparatively liberal Protestant and modernizing society.

Decades of rebellion produced [00:19:30] the new United Provinces of the Netherlands led

by a merchant capitalist state's general and powerful aristocrats.

The Dutch were relatively late to the empire game, but they took to it very well.

Within just a few decades, the first Dutch chartered corporations went from relatively

simple trading concerns, incentivized to explore and annex territory, to fully monopolized

and militarized arms of statecraft.

Within three generation of its existence, [00:20:00] the United Provinces was a global

empire.

There they were then, on the road from serfdom straight to corporatism, the bonds between
