♪ Now for season three ♪

Let's talk about The Magicians!
(upbeat, electro-funk music)
Season three was the best yet in my opinion.
We found our group of magicians, first out of magic,
but also scattered around.
Eliot and Margo
are stuck trying to rule Fillory without magic.
Penny's stuck in the Library,
which is also the only thing that's keeping him alive,
and Kady's trying to figure out a way to save him.
Alice is still a total mess
after being brought back from being a Niffin.
Quentin's trying to find a way to bring magic back
because, well, it's a little bit his fault
that it's gone in the first place.
So when I found out this season
was all about them going on a quest to bring back magic,
I was a bit skeptical.
But as always, this show turns fantasy troupes on their head
and the season was way more
than your average hero's journey.
One of the things I've always really loved about the show
is that Quentin starts out thinking,
"I'm the hero of this story."
And we're continually shown that no, he's not.
Everyone kind of gets their own turn at being the hero,
but mostly, it shows that real life,
even in a fantasy world like Fillory,
that it's more complicated
than just who's the hero that saves the day.
So I love this season
because it's had some of the most compelling scenes
and really, episodes in general.
I think it really hit me in episode five, A Life in the Day,
when we have the montage of Eliot and Quentin
living out their whole lives,
trying to build this mosaic of the beauty of all life.
I don't know if five minutes of broadcast television
has ever moved me the way that scene did.
Like the music and the subtle story of their whole lives.
And we hadn't really addressed
Eliot and Quentin's attraction for each other in a while,
so it was kind of this welcome, sweet moment.
I also loved Julia's arc.
I think she solidified herself
as my favorite character of the season.
Her becoming a goddess,
is so different, and just an amazing journey
from the broken and damaged Julia
we saw in seasons one and two.
Ah, and the introduction of Penny-23,
who I feel like brings some extra intrigue and potential shake-up
to the so far established relationships.
Now we've got a weird love rectangle
between Penny-40, Kady, Penny-23 and Julia.
So I'm interested to see if this goes anywhere.
I also love that there was another side to the fairies,
and that Julia got to help save them.
Essentially, this show makes it really hard
to see anyone as a villain for an extended period of time.
There's always some underlying damage or motivation.
You don't have to agree with it, but sometimes
being able to see things from another's perspective
changes the way that you interpret their actions.
Plus there was a musical episode
which I thought was gonna be real weird,
but actually turned out to be super great.
Like when they sing the climatic song "Under Pressure"
it just kind of brought all of the wonderful weirdness
that is The Magicians to the forefront.
And finally, the way the season ended.
Just, ah-ah-ah! (laughs)
The betrayal by Alice and then even worse, by Dean Fogg.
Everyone's memory getting wiped which is just tragic.
And the creepy, childlike,
body-jumping monster is on the loose.
We've got a mess for season four.
Somehow, they ended up in a worse situation
than at the end of season three when magic was shut off.
Because now, there's magic,
but none of them remember that they're magicians,
or, I mean, who they even are.
Probably the most heartbreaking part for me,
was seeing Margo reduced back to that snake-like mean girl
when we'd seen so much growth from her.
She was elected the King of Fillory by a write-in vote
because people, though mostly talking animals,
recognized that she is awesome
and loyal and super strong.
(sighs) So yeah,
we're left with another cliffhanger
and we have to wait almost another year for season four,
which is just brutal.
But, if waiting that long means
that I get 13 very well crafted episodes
versus some of the chaos and filler episodes
that you get in "full season" shows,
I'm okay with that.
