What Do Food Expiration Dates Actually Mean? - Duration: 4:46.
[♪ INTRO]
You know that horrible, sour smell that comes from expired milk?
Yeah.
You only need to smell it once to make sure it never happens again.
Luckily, many food manufacturers put some kind of Sell By, Best By, or Use By date on
their products to tell you...
well, actually, they don't tell you much.
These labels are mainly for quality and flavor purposes, not safety.
And a lot of common foods are edible past what it says on the label.
This can make it difficult to figure out what you can eat and what needs to go in the compost
bin.
But understanding what's happening chemically when foods go bad, both before and after those
dates pass, can help you out.
A product's real expiration date is tricky to predict, because it can be affected by
everything from the sanitation of the factory to the temperature of your fridge.
But a lot of it depends on what kind of food you're buying.
Produce, for instance, can become unsafe anywhere from hours to weeks after you buy it; a huge
variation most labels don't account for.
Most of this has to do with when it gets moldy, and not about things like brown spots.
Although those don't look pretty, they're harmless.
Mold, meanwhile, can actually hurt you.
Some strains produce substances called mycotoxins, which can cause everything from skin infections
to internal bleeding and death.
And because produce is such a water- and nutrient-rich home for mold, it can start growing as soon
as 24 hours after you bring your produce home.
And it grows even faster in warm temperatures, like on your sunny kitchen countertop.
Extending the shelf life of your produce is pretty easy, though: Just throw it in the
fridge.
Chemical reactions happen more slowly at cold temperatures, so it takes longer for mold
to grow and reproduce in there.
But it will grow eventually.
And when it does, whether it's after a day or a few weeks, it's time for the compost
bin.
Dropping the temperature might be a great trick for a lot of food preservation, but
if you want to really push back the expiration date, you have to kill bacteria before letting
them reproduce.
That's not easy with produce, but it's exactly how we treat milk.
According to the label, milk is usually at its best for around two weeks after you buy
it.
But depending on the kind you buy and how you treat it, it could really expire a few
days later, or earlier.
Traditional milk goes through the process of pasteurization, a heat treatment process
that denatures enzymes in living bacteria and renders them harmless.
And it does a good job, but it's not perfect.
Some of those bacteria survive pasteurization, and over time, they convert the sugars in
milk into lactic acid.
That's what gives spoiled milk that sour smell.
Normally, this process takes a couple of weeks and, typically, it's still drinkable for
around five days after the Sell-By date.
But if the milk gets exposed to slightly warmer temperatures somewhere along the shipping
route, or if you run your refrigerator a few degrees warmer, it can spoil faster.
And while you're probably not going to catch anything life threatening from drinking spoiled
milk, you can catch some brutal food poisoning.
The good news is, it's easy to tell if milk's gone bad.
Just give it a whiff, and take in that lovely lactic acid smell.
Finally, while heat treatments are awesome for getting rid of bacteria in milk, you'll
need a different strategy for meat.
Typically, the Best or Use By dates on these products is for a week or so past purchase.
But while it's often safe past then, it doesn't last for that much longer.
That's because meat is a prime breeding ground for bacteria.
It's a wet, nutrient-dense home with all kinds of fuel sources.
For a few days, these bacteria won't cause you any trouble because there aren't that
many of them.
But over time, they'll multiply.
And that's when you get problems.
Bacteria, like Psuedomonas or Lactobacilli, feast on the meat's surface, where there
are free floating sugar molecules and light weight compounds to nom on.
Some of these bacteria can make you sick, but they do at least announce their presence.
As they break those compounds down, they leave behind some nasty smelling byproducts.
These have all kinds of shapes and compositions, but they all fall into a category called volatile
organic compounds, or VOCs.
Normally, these VOCS smell like rotten meat.
And because you find them when bacteria have been chowing down and multiplying, there's
a pretty strong sign your meat has gone bad.
Besides the smell, you can also probably tell your meat has expired based on how it looks.
For example, VOCs like hydrogen sulfide can convert the natural muscle pigment in meat
into something that looks more green.
Typically, all this happens a few days after the Use By date on that sticker.
But if you notice any of those funky smells or a little slime on your beef… it's time
for it to go, no matter when it happens.
Food science can be tricky, and those ambiguous labels don't always help.
Knowing a little bit about how and why food expires can help you keep your fridge full
for longer.
But if you're really uncertain… it's okay to play it safe.

Why Justin Moore Loves Being A Father | Southern Living - Duration: 3:01.
What do I love most about being a dad?
I'm gonna go with one that probably seems simple but
I literally just tucked my kids in bed
Hearing them tell me how much they love me
and asking me to pray with them
is always pretty sweet at night.
I think the most challenging part for me personally as a dad
is the time that I'm required to spend away from home
and away from them.
It's difficult and gets harder and harder
each time I have to go on the bus.
If I were home every night, every day,
you know you send 'em to school
or you send 'em to daycare.
You're not around them during the day
whenever it may be is trusting that somebody's gonna
ensure their safety,
take care of 'em,
close to the way that you do.
As far as how we stay connected
we Facetime a lot,
we talk on the phone a lot.
We have this really cool system in our house where
I can get on my phone and it's called intercom.
I can wake the kids up and it goes straight to each one
of em's bedroom.
Patience is the thing that I've maybe learned most
from them and I think also that
and I think maybe these two tie together.
The fact that everybody has their own personality
and ideals on how to handle any and every situation.
My dad specifically told me
when I was probably 12, 13, 14 years old that
I could do anything or be anything that
I wanted to do or be.
As I apply it to my own life
I would have to say that that would be the best advice
because I've proven to myself that
what they told me has been proven true.
Being a father now
I love most about my dad that
my dad loves me more than anything in this world.
Again being a father now
he's taught me the love that a father should have
for his children.
I hope to pass every southern value
down to my kids.
I think probably the one that is maybe most important to me
is manners.
As a guy I was taught to open doors
and never walk in front of a lady.
Yes ma'am, yes sir.
No ma'am, no sir.
Please, thank you, et cetera.
And that's still a work in progress in my home
but we do work on it daily and
I do believe that maybe we do have some shortcomings
in the south but manners we're not short on.
You know, I wanna teach 'em a little bit of
everything south.

President Trump Announces America's Biggest Enemy, And It's Not Russia Or Iran - Duration: 3:37.
President Trump Announces America's Biggest Enemy, And It's Not Russia Or Iran
President Trump returned yesterday after a historic meeting with Kim Jong-un.
Thanks to a ground-breaking meeting, it looks as if the United States and North Korea might
come to peaceful terms.
Very soon, we might be seeing North Korea transformed into a U.S. ally.
All thanks to President Trump's brilliant leadership.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the United States has fewer enemies than we ever
had.
Our president is doing amazing work to end hostilities around the world.
In Iran, the mullahs are losing ground as citizens fight for liberty.
Even the specter of Russia is more of a squeaking shadow.
Putin might play his games, but Russia is far from posing a real threat.
That leaves us asking one important question: who is America's real enemy?
What entity poses the greatest threat to our democracy, freedoms, and way of life?
Trump weighed in on the issue.
And I'm sure you'll agree with what he said.
From CNS News:
Criticizing some of the liberal media's coverage of the U.S-North Korea summit on
denuclearization, President Donald Trump said "Fake News" outlets NBC and CNN are trying
to "downplay" the summit, a deal they would have praised a year ago, and added that
America's "biggest enemy is Fake News," which is "so easily promulgated by fools!"
In a June 13 tweet, the president wrote, "So funny to watch the Fake News, especially NBC
and CNN.
They are fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea."
"500 days ago they would have 'begged' for this deal — looked like war would break
out [then]," he wrote.
"Our Country's biggest enemy is the Fake News so easily promulgated by fools!" said
President Trump.
Let's break this down, shall we?
Think about our enemies around the world.
Real steps can and have been taken to neutralize them.
ISIS is getting the crap kicked out of them.
Other enemies, like North Korea, can be diplomatically handled.
We are seeing amazing things happen around the world.
But what about our media?
There is no amount of negotiating that will transform them into honest, decent people.
These are the scum of the earth.
Petty, pathetic hacks that seek to undermine our government—simply because our president
is in the "wrong" political party.
The mainstream media would rather destroy our democracy than give Trump honest coverage.
Their goal is to turn Americans against the President of the United States by being as
negative as possible.
How is that not considered treason?
They don't care if Trump does amazing things.
Or how much of a positive impact he's having on the planet.
They will violate every last shred of "journalistic integrity" to spite him.
Really makes you think.
Even ISIS is upfront about their goals.
Yet the media?
They still pretend to be unbiased reporters.
What a joke!
CNN literally fantasized about the President's assassination.
They deliberately edit videos to make him look back.
From the New York Times to HuffPo, they disgrace our First Amendment for their political goals.
If that's not the work of an enemy, what is?
What do you think about this?

Attract More Agency Clients: Google AdWords Training with Charles Kirkland and Mandy McEwen - Duration: 5:53.
Charles: All your competition is like "Free SEO Audit". So what? Every 16-year-old
kid's got a YouTube channel. It doesn't mean anything. Make it emotional.
I hate to say it, but the more you can drive the pain home, the better
off you're going to be. You know stab it, put in the Morton salt, sew it back up,
and kick them out on the street. Mandy: That also, you guys, everything
Charles is saying, I hope you all are realizing this, is the power of niching
down and choosing a specific target market, and getting super clear
on who you're going after, is the key to success with everything, especially with
paid ads. Not just what Charles said, but even playing on the emotions.
You know you have the the specific people you're going after, and then you
have the specific competitors that are going after the same people you can also
target. Then you have their pain points, their emotions that you can play on
in your ads and your landing pages, and everything. If you're just going after
"small business owners", you're not going to resonate with those dream clients.
And I sound like a broken record because I talk about those dream clients all the
time, in everything I do, in helping you guys realize the power of niching down.
Everything Charles is saying is reiterating the power of getting super specific
on who exactly you're going after. C: I'll tell you this one example. Let's go back.
Everybody just Google "church marketing" right now. We're going use that as an
example. Because that's actually what I used in the Power Point. You're going
to see a company probably call Artistry Labs. Right now they're going to call me
everything but a saint or a child of God because we're probably going to drive
up the cost. They're going to spend $1,000 today on this. Do you see
something that says Artistry Labs? M: Yep. C: Could you read the ad to me?
M: Artistry Labs. The title of that says "Church Marketing Experts | Clarify &
fulfill your vision | artistrylabs.com". Then the url says "artistrylabs.com/
ourservices/churchmarketing". Then the actual ad itself says "Full service agency
for budgets over $10k. Consulting + Branding + Technology". Then,
"Book Online · Start A Conversation. Highlights." C: Now think about this for a
second. What did that ad say, $10k? Quick question, does anybody know why
10k is the magic number with non-profits? M: I do not.
C: Google has a grant for non-profits that will give them $10k
per month to advertise your non-profit. I'm going to tell you how we made a stupid
amount of money. Guys, please copy this. I'm giving you permission. In the
Power Point I give you the ad, I give you the copy, I give you everything in the
Power Point that Mandy's going to be responsible for getting out to you.
This is what happens: Google has a grant for $10k for any non-profit. You just can't
be like a Neo-Nazi or a hate group, but they'll give you a $10k grant.
Just Google "Google non-profit grant". So me being the lazy guy that I am, I
actually created a cold email campaign using stuff I learned from Mandy to
basically email these non-profits, which are churches, and go "Hey Google's got a
grant for $10k. You should absolutely take us up on it. It costs you nothing
to get started. If we can't get your grant, then you don't pay. Think of it this way:
What church and their right mind is going to pass up a $10k per month grant?
I'll be honest with you, when you're giving away free money, people are like "what's
the catch?" There's no catch. It's a tax write-off for Google. They don't care.
So literally, we booked a 100 appointments giving away free grant
money. All we charged was $2k to get them a grant. Let's just say – just pick
a conversion. What percentage you think we closed? M: 40% C: Actually, that's
about right. We closed right about 40%. Just imagine, we have 40 people
who are giving us $2k to get them free grant money. In the Power Point,
you get the ad, I'm giving you the copy, I'm giving you my ad. I'm even showing you
which keywords converted the best and we've been showing you which ones we
used dynamic keyword searching for. We're giving you everything. I figured
if I didn't perform, Mandy would never let me back on. M: Exactly. That is awesome!
I love the fact too, and I know this is a kind of a little bit different, but the
fact that you say for full-service agencies for budgets over $10k in this case,
it's the grant. But you guys, I see this from super savvy marketers all the time:
"For plastic surgeons making over $500k." You know what I'm saying? There are
specific ads that literally write themselves. If you want to target your
dream clients, you straight up call out for "plastic surgeons: over a million in
revenue." You literally put that in the ads, because no one's going to click on it.
If you're a plastic surgeons just starting out and you have $0 revenue or a $100k,
you're not going click on an ad that says "For plastic surgeons: $500k and
over." Or whatever it is, "For mommy makeovers: a million and over."
I see these ads all the time and they're getting super specific on who they're
going after and they're using revenue as part of it. Just going back to Charles'
example, it doesn't matter who you're targeting – It doesn't matter if it's
non-profits or anyone else – you guys can do this in your advertising and you're
going to save money because those people who are the "broke jokes",
as Charles was just saying you don't want, they're not going to click on it if they see
"for budgets over $5k", or "starting at $5k" or "for businesses over $500k."
There's all sorts of ways you could do it, so I like that you show that example.
