Betis and Barcelona were the stand out teams from the first month of 2018.
The Andalusian side had an unforgettable night at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium while at the end of a sublime January,
Barça were well on track to laying claim to LaLiga title.
The first big game of the year took place in Seville.
It promised to be an entertaining encounter.
And so it was.
Vincenzo Montella was making his debut in the dugout for Sevilla who were comfortably placed in fifth place.
Betis, on the other hand, were closer to relegation than to their eternal rivals.
Derbies, however, as we all know, pay no attention to the form book.
A serious Betis side with winning goals from Cristian Tello and Sergio Leon who was celebrating
his 29th birthday, pulled Sevilla apart; and so began their climb to a European spot.
"The fact is, it's been a perfect day for me and the team, we needed a win like this in our eternal rival's ground.
I don't need Christmas or presents. This has been the best possible present, especially after having scoring a goal."
Barça, meanwhile, continued their march to the league title.
Valverde's side took all the points available to them in the month of January.
Luis Suarez was in electric form, scoring in every game.
They were now 11 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Atletico.
Los Colchoneros continued their excellent season and only dropped
points in a draw against the surprise package of the season, Girona.
Wins against Getafe, Eibar and Las Palmas and Real Madrid's
slip-ups meant Simeone side were now firmly ensconced in second place.
Los Blancos made a bad start to 2018. A Maxi Gomez goal at the Balaidos, and another from Fornals in the Bernabeu,
both in the final minutes of the game, virtually saw off all chances of the league title.
Only their hidings of Deportivo and away to an out-of-kilter Valencia at the Mestalla, gave the Real fans any cause for hope.
Another of the month of January's outstanding players was Michael Olunga.
Girona's Kenyan striker entered the Catalan club's history books by becoming their first
ever player to score a hat trick in the top flight.
At the bottom of the table, Michel paid the price for Malaga's appalling form and was dismissed after their defeat against Getafe.
His replacement, Jose Gonzalez, didn't start off to badly, drawing against Eibar
and Girona, but he still couldn't get his side off the foot of the table.
At the end of Matchday 21, Barça were well on top, 11 points ahead of Atletico and with 19 more than Real Madrid.
Although los Blancos did have a game in hand.
Malaga, in deep trouble at the bottom of the table were 6 points adrift of safety.
