(RECAP) ALISTAIR: There are three main groups that we have treaties for.
The Dalish elves, the dwarves of Orzammar, and the Circle of Magi.
ELISSA: Where do we find the Circle of Magi?
ALISTAIR: That would be at their Tower on Lake Calenhad, to the north.
We'll be looking for the First Enchanter, whoever that is.
(RECAP) WYNNE: Allow me to introduce myself.
I am Wynne, one of the mages summoned by the King.
Any time your spirit leaves your earthly body
whether it's to dream, or to die
it passes into the realm we call the Fade.
It's home to many spirits - some benevolent, others far less so.
(RECAP) SHALE: I will follow it about then.
For now.
I am called Shale, by the way.
ELISSA: I would have expected golems to be...different.
SHALE: Different?
Different than what?
Different than a statue? Different than a log?
Should I talk in monotone?
(monotone) Yes, master. I exist to serve, master. I shall kill for the master and only for the master.
Perhaps it expected me to have a booming voice?
Recite limericks? (laughs)
I *can* recite limericks, if it likes.
ELISSA: Are they dirty limericks?
SHALE: Mostly they involve slaughtering pigeons in creative and invasive manners.
SHALE: I have never met another golem.
I have no idea what one might be like.
Or why I wouldn't be like them.
Why? Has it met other golems?
Did they not sound as I do?
ELISSA: I have...no idea what golems sound like.
SHALE: I don't know what other golems might be like
but I am already superior - by virtue of my free will.
This is a good thing.
ELISSA: It's an experience, I'll give it that...
SHALE: So is being drawn and quartered.
Maybe I'm not the only one with a smart mouth, hmm?
Now stop talking so much.
The wagging of its moist little tongue is distracting.
ALISTAIR: What do you need?
ELISSA: So how did you become a Grey Warden?
ALISTAIR: Same way you did.
You drink some blood, you choke on it, and pass out.
You haven't forgotten already, have you?
ELISSA: Ha Ha. Very funny.
ALISTAIR: I do my best. (laughs) What can I say?
Let's see - I was in the Chantry before.
I trained for many years to become a Templar, in fact.
That's where I learned most of my skills.
ELISSA: You don't *seem* like the religious sort...
ALISTAIR: You're telling me - I was banished to the kitchens to scour the pots more times than I can count.
And that's a lot! I can count pretty high.
The Grand Cleric didn't want to let me go.
Duncan was forced to conscript me, actually, and was she *ever* furious
when he did - I thought she was going to have us both arrested. I was lucky.
ELISSA: Why did the Grand Cleric want to keep you?
ALISTAIR: I wondered that myself.
It's not as if she valued me highly.
I think she just didn't want to give anything to the Grey Wardens, is all.
The Chantry didn't lose much.
And I think I can do more fighting the Blight anyhow, rather than sitting in a temple somewhere.
I'll always be thankful to Duncan for recruiting me.
If it hadn't been for him, you know, I would never...
I wouldn't have...
ELISSA: I - I'm sorry...
ALISTAIR: No, it's...
I'm sorry.
I shouldn't be...
It's fine.
He died a hero.
They all did.
Come on, let's go. I think I'm done talking.
STEN: Yes?
ELISSA: What were you doing in that cage?
STEN: Sitting. As you observed.
ELISSA: Do you have to be so literal?
STEN: No. It's a choice, not a necessity.
ELISSA: You don't like me much, do you?
STEN: Warden - if I truly disliked you, I would leave.
But I am still here.
You may interpret however you choose.
ELISSA: Are you going to answer my question?
STEN: I did. Parshaara.
LELIANA: Yes?
ELISSA: What would someone like you be doing in Lothering's Chantry?
LELIANA: What is meant by 'someone like me'?
ELISSA: Well they don't teach you how to fight in the cloister, do they!
LELIANA: Did you think I was always a cloistered sister?
The Chantry provides succour and safe harbour to all who seek it.
I choose to stay, and become affirmed.
ELISSA: So your skills were learned before your time in the Chantry?
LELIANA: I was a travelling minstrel in Orlais.
Tales and songs were my life.
I performed, and they rewarded me with applause and coin.
And my skill in battle?
Well, you pick up different skills when you travel, yes?
Yes, of course! Um...let's move on.
(theme music plays)
(campfire crackling)
BODAHN: You are your friends are formidable folk indeed.
It's good to have you along on the road.
ELISSA: Have you heard any rumours?
BODAHN: The darkspawn have attacked Lothering.
I don't think everyone had even fled by the time they came, either.
Word has it they swarmed the entire area, making off with prisoners
and burning down the buildings...
and then they were gone.
Just as quick.
I wonder if there's anyone left?
I heard some Chanters were going to head down south
maybe to try and find some survivors
...I'm not holding out hope, myself.
That's what I've heard on the road, anyhow.
Take it for what it is.
SHALE: (grunts)
ELISSA: How did you end up in Honnleath?
Do you remember?
SHALE: Oh yes.
That I remember quite well.
My former master, the mage Wilhelm
he brought me.
As I recall, he had acquired some position with whatever lord ruled the land.
I, being little more than a glorified possession at the time
was brought along.
Oh, how he enjoyed impressing the villagers with me.
'Golem - snarl at that villager there! Be fearsome!'
And of course, I would have to do it.
SHALE: (sighs)
ELISSA: You didn't like this Wilhelm, I take it?
SHALE: He did love using that control rod.
Fondled it so much, his wife actually threatened to throw it in the lake. Ha!
I would have liked to have seen that.
Which reminds me - where did it find the rod?
Did it pay a great deal for it?
ELISSA: Wilhelm's wife sold it, I believe.
SHALE: Hag.
ELISSA: Do you remember anything before Honnleath?
SHALE: I travelled with the mage.
He did a lot of travelling, I remember that. But where we went?
It is rather fuzzy.
I remember great battles.
Fighting many humans, long ago.
They were all very soft and squishy.
And before that? I...no, there are only images.
I was somewhere dark.
ELISSA: Just how old are you exactly?
SHALE: I have no idea.
Wilhelm used to brag that the dwarves stopped making golems centuries ago.
I do not age as you soft creatures do.
Sadly, my memory's no better.
Plus, I get bored and stop paying attention.
ELISSA: I would have thought you'd enjoy scaring humans.
SHALE: I'd have happily stomped them all into paste.
And then ripped down their little houses and stomped on them, too.
In fact, after thirty years of watching them, I'd do it twice.
What I didn't like was being ordered to do it.
Dangled in front of those frightened morons like some...
...scary thing.
Once I was a statue
it took those villagers years before they'd even approach me.
The first one to actually work up the nerve to touch me, urinated himself. Ugh!
ELISSA: But why where you out in front of the tower?
SHALE: That is where Wilhelm kept me.
He wanted me out in the open where I could be frightening, like a scarecrow.
I was supposed to watch for thieves. Pah!
Plus, his wife didn't want me indoors.
She said there wasn't room for me. Hmpf!
I was once larger. Ten feet tall!
Then the loathsome hag complained that I couldn't fit through the doors.
So the mage had me shrunk down. Shrunk down!
Can it believe it?
And she *still* wanted me out.
ELISSA: ...How does someone shrink a golem?
SHALE: With a chisel.
And a lot of nerve!
ELISSA: Interesting...
...I'm done asking about that...
SHALE: Good. I was just about done talking about it.
It does like to have a good chat now and again, doesn't it?
(gentle sounds of water)
(campfire burning)
KESTER: Why, bless my soul!
What's a distinguished personage like yourself doing here?
ELISSA: I was looking to get across the lake to the Tower.
KESTER: Ha! Don't hold your breath.
No-one's been allowed across the lake for days.
I'm the ferryman.
Leastwise I used to be.
Poor old Kester, out of a job...
ELISSA: Why?
KESTER: I don't got a clue! They wouldn't tell me!
Greagoir just came down and said 'Don't you worry Kester,
we got it all under control, we do.'
Didn't say nothing else.
And then he puts Carroll in charge of my boat!
Lissie! Named for my grandmum she was.
ELISSA: Who's Greagoir?
KESTER: He's Knight Commander of the Templars up in the Tower.
Good man.
ELISSA: Is something wrong up there at the Tower?
KESTER: I told you - they didn't tell me nothing.
And if I know their mages, I'm better off keeping out of their business.
If I had to guess, I'd guess it had to do with magic
but the Tower's always got something to do with magic.
ELISSA: But I have to get there - I'm on official business.
KESTER: Don't look at me! I told you, I'm not the ferryman no more.
Greagoir's told me to stay here until it blows over
but I'm telling you - some storms don't blow over easy.
ELISSA: I have to find out what's going on.
KESTER: Well, you go on ahead.
Greagoir tells me to stay here, I stay here.
Reckon the fellow knows what he's talking about.
ELISSA: So...you know the Knight-Commander Greagoir well?
KESTER: Oh, I can't say that.
I'm lucky he's good enough to give me the time of day.
The First Enchanter's....alright
He's as polite as can be, but he's always a little distant, if you get my drift.
But Gregoir'll stay to talk.
I reckon he likes hearing from us common folk, you know?
he's a man to be respected, that Greagoir.
ELISSA: What are your opinions on the Circle?
KESTER: I reckon it's good for them mages.
Gather them all, learn them some proper magics.
I know what they say about mages, but
the Maker made them for a purpose.
If you can't trust Him, who can you trust?
ELISSA: I can't stay. Good day, Kester.
KESTER: Alright. Keep safe, you hear?
CARROLL: You! You're not looking to get across to the Tower, are you?
Because I have strict orders not to let anyone pass.
ELISSA: Why? I need to get to the Tower.
CARROLL: No-one gets to the Tower. No-one!
The Tower is off-limits to all.
ELISSA: This is official Grey Warden business, now take me there.
CARROLL: Oh, you're a Grey Warden are you?
Prove it.
ELISSA: Prove it?
CARROLL: Kill some darkspawn.
Come on! Let's see some righteous Grey Warden-ing.
ELISSA: ...Grey 'Warden-ing' isn't something you do, it's what you *are*.
CARROLL: Ugh...semantics.
Anyway, it was nice chatting with you
Now, on your way. Right now! Go!
ELISSA: Can't we work something out?
CARROLL: Hmm...I don't know...
I am feeling a little peckish, though.
ELISSA: You want me to feed you.
STEN: Parshaara - here, munch on these if you like.
CARROLL: Ho! Cookies!
STEN: I am content to part with them if it saves us from this fool.
ELISSA: ...Where did you get those?
STEN: There was a child. A fat, slovenly thing in the last village we passed.
I relieved him of these confections.
He didn't need more.
ELISSA: You stole cookies from a child?
STEN: For his own good.
CARROLL: Mmm! Yummy!
You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours, yes?
We can go across now, if you really want?
ELISSA: Yes. Let's go.
CARROLL: Come along, I suppose...
GREAGOIR: And I want two men stationed within sight of the door at all times.
Do not open the doors without my express consent. Is that clear?
TEMPLAR: Yes ser.
GREAGOIR: Now we wait, and pray.
ELISSA: What's going on here?
GREAGOIR: We're dealing with a very delicate situation - you must leave for your own safety.
ELISSA: No. The mages have an obligation to the Grey Wardens.
GREAGOIR: I am weary of the Grey Warden's ceaseless need for men to fight the darkspawn
but it is their right.
You'll find no allies here.
The Templars can spare no men, and the mages are indisposed.
I shall speak plainly.
The Tower is no longer under our control.
Abominations and demons stalk the Tower's halls.
STEN: This is why we cut the tongues from mages in Par Vollen.
GREAGOIR: I will admit to agreeing with your companion.
Maker knows the Qunari would not have gotten themselves into this position.
ELISSA: How did this happen?
GREAGOIR: We don't know.
We saw only demons, hunting templars and mages alike.
I realised we could not defeat them and told my men to flee.
ELISSA: What can I do to help?
GREAGOIR: I have sent word to Denerim
Calling for re-inforcements and the Rite of Annulment.
ELISSA: The Rite of Annulment?
GREAGOIR: The Rite of Annulment gives Templars the authority to neutralise the Mage Circle.
Completely.
This situation is dire. There is no alternative.
Everything in the Tower must be destroyed so it can be made safe again.
ELISSA: Well the mages are not defenceless, some must still live.
GREAGOIR: If any are still alive, the Maker himself has shielded them.
No-one could have survived those monstrous creatures.
It is too painful to hope for survivors and find...
Nothing.
ELISSA: But it was you that shut them all in!
GREAGOIR: And what was I to do?
Leave the door open as the abominations poured out?
The mages are lost.
It is something we must accept.
Denerim must have received our message...
It cannot be much longer.
ELISSA: There must be something I can do?
SER GREAGOIR: You?
What can you do?
ELISSA: People in there might need help.
You can't abandon them!
SER GREAGOIR: It is the innocent folk of Ferelden who matter!
I would lay down my life, and the life of any mage to protect them.
No abomination must cross this threshold.
ELISSA: There is still so much going on that is unexplained...
SER GREAGOIR: I, too, would like to know how this started.
ELISSA: I will investigate the Tower, and see what can be done.
SER GREAGOIR: You must face and slaughter the abominations to get to the bottom of this.
Are you sure you can handle them?
ELISSA: I have confidence in my abilities.
SER GREAGOIR: If you succeed, I would owe you much.
Enough that I would pledge my Templars to your cause.
Without word from Denerim, I must determine our course.
Surely destroying darkspawn is a worthy goal.
ELISSA: We have an agreement, then?
SER GREAGOIR: A word of caution.
Once you cross that threshold, there is no turning back.
The great doors must remain barred.
I will open them for no-one.
Until I have proof that it is safe.
I will only believe it is over if the First Enchanter stands before me
and tells me it is so.
If Irving has fallen...
Then the Circle is lost, and must be destroyed.
May Andraste lend our her courage.
Whatever you decide.
(heavy doors closing)
STEN: This is the prison for your mages?
Ours is not so grand.
STEN: You were in the Chantry. You are a priest?
LELIANA: No, no - I was a lay sister of the Chantry.
STEN: Which means?
LELIANA: I lived and worked in the Chantry,
but I did not take any vows.
STEN: So you...dabbled in priesthood then.
LELIANA: Oh no.
The lay sisters don't have the same sorts of duties as priests at all.
STEN: So you are not a priest,
did none of their duties and took no vows,
but you lived among them.
You were a...house-guest of the Chantry?
LELIANA: Um...sort of?
WYNNE: It's you! No - come no further!
Grey Warden or no, I will strike you down where you stand.
ELISSA: I'm not here to fight!
WYNNE: I will accept that, for now.
But what are you doing here then?
ELISSA: I came here seeking the aid of the mages.
WYNNE: And you were told that the Circle was in no shape to help you, I suppose.
So why did the Templars let you in?
Do they plan to attack the Tower now?
ELISSA: Don't worry - the Rite of Annulment has not arrived.
WYNNE: (sighs) They sent for it then.
I feared they might have. What else could they do?
So Greagoir thinks the Circle is beyond hope.
He probably assumes we are all dead.
They abandoned us to our fate.
But even trapped as we are, we have survived.
If they invoke the Rite, however...we will not be able to stand against them.
ELISSA: What *happened* here?
WYNNE: Let it suffice to say that we had something of a revolt on our hands
Led by a mage named Uldred.
When he returned from the battle at Ostagar, he tried to take over the Circle.
As you can see, it didn't work out as he had planned.
I don't know what became of Uldred.
But I am certain all this is his doing.
I will not lose the Circle to one man's pride, and stupidity.
ELISSA: So what do you intend?
WYNNE: I erected a barrier over the door leading to the rest of the Tower
so nothing from inside could attack the children.
You will not be able to enter the Tower as long as the barrier holds
but I would dispel it if you join with me - to save this Circle.
ELISSA: We must try to avoid needless slaughter.
WYNNE: Yes.
Even if we cannot eliminate *all* the demons and abominations
Together we could lead the survivors out!
Once Greagoir sees that we have made the Tower safe,
I trust he will tell his men to back down.
He is not unreasonable.
ELISSA: Greagoir will only accept it if the First Enchanter says so.
WYNNE: Then our path is laid out before us.
We must save Irving.
ELISSA: Will the children be safe here?
Petra and Kinnon will watch them.
If we slay all the fiends we encounter on our way,
none will get by to threaten the children.
ELISSA: I suppose that could work...
MORRIGAN: You want us to assist this...preachy schoolmistress?
To rescue these pathetic excuses for mages?
They *allow* themselves to be corralled like cattle, mindless...
Now their masters have chosen death for them
and I say...let them have it.
ELISSA: Why do you treat the Circle with such scorn?
MORRIGAN: Look at how they live.
Servants. Of the Chantry!
They lack respect for themselves and their own power,
why should I respect them?
ELISSA: Everyone deserves respect.
Even cruel people, like you.
MORRIGAN: (tuts) Have it your way.
WYNNE: Petra, Kinnon - look after the others.
I will be back soon.
PETRA: Wynne - are you sure you're alright?
You were so badly hurt earlier!
Maybe I should come along?
WYNNE: The others need your protection more.
I will be alright.
Stay here with them, keep them safe and calm.
ELISSA: Have faith - we will not fail.
WYNNE: Your confidence is refreshing.
Though you should make sure it does not blind you to your weaknesses.
If you are ready, let us go end this.
PETRA: Look after her, will you?
ELISSA: You sound a little worried.
PETRA: I don't know if she's up to this, especially not after...
I just worry.
ELISSA: Not after what?
PETRA: I was on my way down to the library,
when I heard screaming.
And a demon came round the corner...
Its eyes were afire with evil!
I was certain it was my death come upon me.
I think I screamed, I was so afraid...
And then Wynne was there!
In front of me, shielding me!
It was light and fire, blood and chaos...
When it was over, the demon was dead.
But Wynne wasn't moving either.
I was so afraid she was...
gone.
ELISSA: Well...she *seems* to have survived...
PETRA: Just...look after her, alright.
She might be completely fine, but...
then again,
maybe she didn't come away from that totally unharmed.
ELISSA: Don't worry. She'll be safe with me.
PETRA: Thank you...and thank you again for helping us.
KINNON: It is good to see that some Wardens survived.
We are sorry for the loss of your comrades.
ELISSA: Loghain is to blame.
He betrayed King Cailan.
KINNON: You heard about Loghain?
Wynne was at Ostagar.
She told us everything upon her return.
I would never have imagined the Teyrn a traitor.
But why speak of things past?
Be careful in there. And stay safe.
MAGE: I don't suppose this is what you expected the Circle to be like, is it?
ELISSA: This is not a common occurrence, I take it?
MAGE: I keep thinking this is our punishment for being mages.
That's why the Templars have to - to do away with us.
Their swords are like the - the sword of mercy that sent
Andraste back to the Maker.
ELISSA: That's...one way of putting it?
MAGE: We should let the Templars come.
Only then can we be cleansed of our wickedness!
ELISSA: The horror of this ordeal has unhinged you, I see.
MAGE: I will pray.
May we abandon our tainted bodies to find peace with the Maker.
WYNNE: Here we are.
WYNNE: Hm. I'm somewhat amazed at myself for having kept it in place this long.
ELISSA: You did what you had to do, Wynne.
WYNNE: It made me very weary at times.
But I had to stay strong, to keep us safe.
Be prepared for anything.
I do not know what manner of beasts lurk beyond this barrier.
Are you ready?
ELISSA: I'm ready.
Destroy the barrier.
WYNNE: Alright.
Be on your guard.
(magic hum fades away)
(demons screeching)
(explosions)
(demon screeching)
WYNNE: Yes? Is there something you wish to discuss?
If not, we should hurry - time is of the essence.
ELISSA: Can you tell me how all this trouble started?
WYNNE: Oh...a long story.
It all started when I returned from Ostagar.
I was at that ill-fated battle.
And I survived, barely.
I was in no state to travel, so I stayed at Ostagar to recuperate
and help the wounded.
Uldred, on the other hand
left for the Tower almost immediately.
When I finally returned here, I found that Uldred
had all but convinced the Circle to join Loghain.
The man who nearly destroyed us all.
I cannot fault the Circle though.
Uldred had a persuasive argument.
And how could they have known what happened at Ostagar?
ELISSA: Maybe Uldred had been in cahoots with Loghain all along?
WYNNE: That is my suspicion.
Uldred always wanted power.
Perhaps Loghain promised Uldred the position of First Enchanter.
Once they had dealt with the Blight.
Well I told the First Enchanted Irving what Loghain did on the battlefield.
I revealed him for the traitorous bastard he is.
Irving said he would take care of it.
He called a meeting, to confront Uldred.
But something must have gone wrong.
I emerged from my quarters when I heard the screams.
They were coming from the meeting room, and it wasn't long before...
I saw the first abomination...running down a mage.
It deteriorated quickly then.
ELISSA: What caused the abominations?
WYNNE: Mages who are careless in their use of magic may turn into abominations.
Something must have gone wrong.
ELISSA: Can you tell me more about Uldred?
WYNNE: Uldred...
It's uncharitable of me to speak this way, but I never liked him.
He was a squirrely, twitchy sort of person.
He never mentored the apprentices, never taught.
He didn't seem to care much for Circle.
Only his own advancement.
ELISSA: Sounds like a thoroughly nasty person.
WYNNE: I'm sure Uldred has some redeeming qualities.
He probably has a perfectly good reason for not displaying them.
ELISSA: Do you know what we'll face in the Tower?
WYNNE: You have seen the demons, haven't you?
We will doubtless see more of those.
But I fear the abominations more.
They are no longer human, and are driven only by their lust for destruction.
ELISSA: If we work together, we can survive.
WYNNE: I hope you're right.
ELISSA: Then let's not waste any more time.
WYNNE: Onward, then.
TRANQUIL: Please refrain from going into the stockroom.
It is a mess, and I've not been able to get it into a state fit to be seen.
ELISSA: Who are you?
OWAIN: I am called Owain.
And I manage the Circle's magical stockroom.
I was trying to tidy up, but there was little I could do.
ELISSA: Why are you cleaning at a time like this?
OWAIN: The stockroom is my responsibility.
I must keep it clean.
I tried to leave when things got quiet
that was when I encountered the barrier.
Finding no other way out,
I returned to work.
WYNNE: Owain, you should have said something!
I would have opened the door for you.
OWAIN: The stockroom is familiar.
I prefer to be here.
ELISSA: Haven't you come across any abominations?
OWAIN: No.
I suppose I should count myself lucky.
I would prefer not to die.
I would prefer it if the Tower returned to the way it was.
Perhaps Niall will succeed and save us all.
ELISSA: What's this Niall trying to do?
OWAIN: I do not know.
But he came here with several others and took the Litany of Adralla.
WYNNE: But that protects from mind domination...
Is blood magic at work here?
OWAIN: I do not know.
WYNNE: Niall was in the meeting...he would know.
Blood magic.
I was afraid of this.
ELISSA: How is it worse?
WYNNE: Blood magic could control us, too.
Who knows what could happen then?
We should find Niall.
The Litany will give us a fighting chance against any blood mages we encounter.
OWAIN: I wish you luck.
Perhaps this will be over soon and things will return to the way they were.
Goodbye.
(voices in the background)
BLOOD MAGE: Please! Please don't kill me!
ELISSA: The people you killed didn't want to die either.
BLOOD MAGE: I know I have no right to ask for mercy, but
I didn't mean for this death and destruction...
We were just trying to free ourselves!
Uldred told us that the Circle would support Loghain
and Loghain would help us be free of the Chantry!
You don't know what it was like.
The Templars were watching...
Always watching.
ELISSA: What you've done will make things *worse* for future mages!
BLOOD MAGE: We thought...someone always has to take the first step.
Force a change, no matter the cost.
WYNNE: Nothing is worth what you've done to this place.
BLOOD MAGE: And now Uldred's gone mad!
And we are scattered.
Doomed to die at the hands of those who seek to right our wrongs.
ELISSA: And all you do is wallow in self-pity.
Pathetic!
BLOOD MAGE: What else can I do?
I'm trapped here.
ELISSA: You can die with dignity.
BLOOD MAGE: No! No, please!
(voices shouting)
BLOOD MAGE: There must be something left! If we get out, we're gonna need gold. Uldred said-
BLOOD MAGE #2: Uldred's not here, is he?
Keep your mouth shut, and we'll be right as rain!
WYNNE: This is Irving's office.
I half expected to find him here, but I suppose that's too much to hope for.
ELISSA: Here's Irving's journal...
It says he's been looking for students that show signs of a tendency towards blood magic...
And Uldred has been very helpful in identifying the markers to look for.
'His skills at misdirection are admirable.
I daresay that the apprentices would be shocked at his ability to manipulate them.'
I daresay they would.
WYNNE: Everyone's gone...or dead.
WYNNE: I fear the worst.
(demons roaring)
???: It is time for supper, pet.
TEMPLAR: Yes, my love - what are we having tonight?
???: Roast boar...your favourite.
And candied yams.
The meal looks sumptuous...
TEMPLAR: You spoil me, my sweet!
How fare our children at their lessons?
???: You should ask them yourself.
TEMPLAR: What have you learned, my son?
???: Mother has me practising my penmanship.
She raps me on my knuckles if my letters are not formed correctly.
TEMPLAR: Yes, it is important for a young man to be able to write.
And what about you, my dearest Nyssa?
???: Mother is teaching me to play the harp.
And I helped with supper!
???: Everything is just as you wanted, my knight.
Our love and our family is more than you hoped for.
ELISSA: Unhand him foul demon!
TEMPLAR: Do you hear something, love?
DEMON: It is nothing, my darling.
Just the door.
I will get it.
The children have finished supper.
Tuck them into bed, while I see who it is.
TEMPLAR: Don't be long! The children will want to kiss you goodnight!
DEMON: I will be but a moment, my pet.
You are intruding upon a loving, intimate moment
and I dislike disruptions.
ELISSA: There's nothing 'loving' or 'intimate' going on here.
DEMON: I have given him what he always wanted.
Where's the harm in that?
ELISSA: You're deceiving him. I would consider that harmful.
DEMON: All emotion is intangible.
You cannot see it, cannot grasp it.
WYNNE: But it is normally caused by something real.
Real events, real people.
What you've done to him, is...is abhorrent.
DEMON: I saw his loneliness and longing for a family that loved him.
MORRIGAN: Apparently you can get your desire and *still* suffer horribly.
'Tis truly a lesson for all who consider marriage.
WYNNE: How long will you keep him in this stupor?
Will he know it when his body fails, and death claims him?
DEMON: A short, blissful existence is preferable to an interminable one of misery.
ELISSA: I do not think *this* is what he really wants.
DEMON: You do not see what I see of him.
You do not know. We are partners.
I give him what no-one else can,
and through him, I experience what it is to be mortal.
ELISSA: You're a parasite.
And we must be rid of you.
STEN: Freedom cannot be given. The Templar must choose it for himself.
ELISSA: Do you really think so?
STEN: If you help this man, what does he learn?
Nothing.
ELISSA: I'm sorry, but I can't leave him like this.
DEMON: Our thoughts and spirits are melded.
If one perishes...so does the other.
Though much of my strength is spent maintaining this link,
I am his wife. And his children.
He will defend me to the death, if need be.
I want nothing from you - I have what I need.
All I ask is that you leave us alone.
ELISSA: Even if I do, the Templars will come for you eventually.
DEMON: Perhaps we will escape?
Perhaps we will not.
ELISSA: You are too dangerous to let live.
DEMON: Then you leave me no choice.
DEMON: Help! There are bandits at the door
they're going to murder the children!
TEMPLAR: They will not get past me!
TEMPLAR: You will not win!
ABOMINATION: Oh, look. Visitors.
I'd entertain you, but...too much effort involved.
ELISSA: Who is that man, and what have you done to him?
ABOMINATION: He's just resting.
Poor lad. He was so very, very weary...
You want to join us, don't you...?
Wouldn't you like to just lay down
and forget about all this...
Leave it all behind...
MORRIGAN: (yawning) This is ridiculous!
You cannot expect me to rest on a floor sticky with blood...
STEN: We must stand, and fight...
WYNNE: Resist!
You must resist!
Else we are all lost!
ABOMINATION: Why do you fight?
You deserve more...
You deserve a rest...
The world will go on without you...
Duncan: Ah, there you are!
I'm not disturbing you, am I?
ELISSA: ...You should be dead...
DUNCAN: Dead? Me?
(laughs)
I have been close many times.
But I never quite made it all the way.
I just wanted to make sure you were happy here in Weisshaupt.
These grand halls were built by the first Grey Wardens.
Isn't it breathtaking?
ELISSA: I...I don't know...
Something doesn't seem right.
DUNCAN: Everything is as it should be.
We have eradicated the darkspawn, and the world is at peace.
ELISSA: That's not right...
The world is never utterly at peace...
DUNCAN: But now it is!
For the first time in history.
And you played a part in the making of that history!
Do you not remember?
ELISSA: Vaguely? As though it were a dream...
DUNCAN: It was a triumph for all of us.
Bringing down the Archdemon, and setting the underground lairs ablaze.
ELISSA: That's...not possible...
You're hiding something from me.
DUNCAN: Foolish child.
I have given you so much, and you cast it back in my face!
Can you not be content with the peace I offer?
ELISSA: You offer complacency, not peace!
DUNCAN: It seems only war and death will satisfy you!
So be it!
Have your war, and your darkspawn.
May they be your doom!
STEN: Shanedan.
QUNARI #1: Who are you talking to?
QUNARI #2: Don't bother the Sten.
Isn't it your turn to cook?
QUNARI #1: Cook what?
There's no food in this miserable, frozen country.
STEN: Parshaara! We have a guest.
Make room at the fire.
ELISSA: Why do they call you 'the Sten'?
STEN: The same reason they call you The Warden.
QUNARI #1: We've been days in this place.
There's no sign of any threat.
The Arishok's report was wrong.
Can we not go home?
STEN: No.
QUNARI #1: Ugh.
ELISSA: So *this* is what Qunari are like...
STEN: Not really.
This is a dream. I'm not a fool, Warden!
I remember seeing the Karashok there have his head torn off.
QUNARI #2: Well, at least it's not a great loss.
QUNARI #1: You are so entertaining, Kadan.
You should perform in the square, with the other trained monkeys.
We could throw you peanuts.
STEN: It's a dream.
But it's a good dream...
ELISSA: This is a cage, Sten.
Just like Lothering.
STEN: Here, or Lothering, or Orlais - it's all the same.
Far from home, one place is no better than any other.
ELISSA: Soldiers of the Beresaad don't waste time dreaming.
STEN: No, they don't.
But I am no longer of the Beresaad.
I am no-one.
ELISSA: If you stay here, they died for nothing.
STEN: For once you are right, Warden.
I owe them a victory.
QUNARI #1: You can't abandon your post!
STEN: Stand aside.
I would hate to see you all die, again.
QUNARI #2: No, we won't let you leave us again!
STEN: And yet this gives me no peace.
I wish to leave this place.
No! More trickery - what is happening?!
MORRIGAN: Away. Away with you! I shall have no more of your pestering.
FLEMETH: I am your mother.
Do you not love me?
You are as much my mother as my little finger right here is the Queen of Ferelden.
I know you, Fade spirit. You cannot fool me!
FLEMETH: Are you more clever than your own dear Mother?
Surely such pride must be punished?
There!
That is for not showing respect!
MORRIGAN: That is far more like it.
But it is too little, too late, spirit.
'Tis you at last!
Come, and rid me of this vexatious spirit.
I weary of being prodded!
ELISSA: Why is she 'prodding' you?
MORRIGAN: You ask me?
It cannot even read my mind well enough to form a decent copy
yet it hounds me still.
FLEMETH: She doesn't even acknowledge her own mother!
My heart, it breaks...
MORRIGAN: Oh, slay it. And quickly!
Even the true Flemeth was never as annoying as this.
MORRIGAN: 'Tis about time, that was most-
Wait. What is this? No, not this again!
I refuse!
WYNNE: Maker, forgive me.
I failed them all.
They died, and I did not stop it...
ELISSA: But they're not dead yet - the Circle can still be saved!
WYNNE: What about all this?
How can you say that when you are faced...
With this?
Death. Can you not see it?
It's all around us.
ELISSA: You're in the Fade. This, is a dream.
WYNNE: Why was I spared?
If not to help them?
What use is my life
now that I have failed in the task that was given me?
Leave me to my grief.
I shall bury their bones.
Scatter their ashes to the four winds...
and mourn their passing.
'Til I too am dead.
ELISSA: You *have* to fight this feeling - whatever it is!
WYNN: Your blatant disregard for the souls of the dead
strikes me as being utterly inappropriate.
ELISSA: Please - think about what you're doing here, and *why*.
WYNN: I do not know what you are trying to tell me.
Why must you make this more painful?
And where were you when this happened?
I trusted you as an ally.
And you were nowhere to be found!
ELISSA: I am the only thing that's real.
Ignore everything else!
WYNNE: I do not what this will accomplish, but...
I will do this, if it will satisfy you.
'Tis...difficult...
to...focus...
It feels as though something is stopping me from concentrating.
I've never had so much trouble!
Perhaps - some time away from this place will help me think clearly?
ELISSA: That sounds like a good idea!
DEAD MAGE: Don't leave us Wynne!
We don't want to be alone!
WYNNE: Holy Maker!
Stay away, foul creature!
ELISSA: You have to defeat them to leave.
DEAD MAGE: Stay, Wynne!
Sleep soundly in the comforting embrace of the earth.
Do not fight it.
You belong here with us.
WYNNE: No...no!
No - not yet!
My task is not yet done.
It is not time yet!
DEAD MAGE: Come.
Come away to your rest.
WYNNE: Is it over?
Thank the Maker for you.
Wait!
What's happening, where are you going?
DEMON: What do we have here?
A rebellious minion?
An escaped slave?
(laughs)
My my, but you do have some gall.
But playtime is over.
You all have to go back now.
MORRIGAN: You made a dangerous enemy, demon, by toying with *my* mind.
STEN: I am here, and it is time to finish this!
I have had enough of cages.
WYNNE: You will not hold us, demon!
We found each other in this place
and you cannot stand against us!
DEMON: If you go back quietly...
I'll do better this time.
I'll make you much happier...
ELISSA: I'll make my own happiness, thank you.
DEMON: Can't you think about someone other than yourself?
I'm hurt.
So very, very hurt...
ELISSA: Sorry, but I'd rather just be rid of your evil right now.
DEMON: You wish to battle me?
So be it.
You will learn to bow to your betters, mortal.
(demon roaring)
MORRIGAN: (laughs)
(yelling)
DEMON: (muttering ominously)
NIALL: You defeated the demon!
I never thought...
I never expected you to free yourself!
To free us both...
When you return...
Take the Litany of Adralla from my...body.
It will protect you from the worst of the blood magic.
ELISSA: Your body?
NIALL: I cannot go with you.
I have been here far too long.
For you it will have been an afternoon's nap.
Your body won't have wasted away in the real world, while your
spirit lays in the hands of the demon.
ELISSA: You think you're going to die?
NIALL: Every minute I was here, the sloth demon was feeding off of me.
Using my life to fuel the nightmares of this realm.
There is so little of me left...
I was never meant to save the Circle, or
survive its troubles.
I am dying.
It is as simple as that.
ELISSA: But there must be something I can do?
NIALL: Thank you. But it is too late for me.
I do not fear what may come.
They say we return to the Maker in death.
And that isn't such a terrible thing.
My only regret is that I could not save the Circle...
But you -
you can.
Take the Litany off my - my body, when you return.
It is important!
ELISSA: I will do this.
NIALL: I'm not the hero...
Perhaps trying to be one was foolish.
ELISSA: That's not true - you did a lot to help the Circle!
Dark times, greater acts of heroism, eh?
You may be right.
Before I was taken to the Circle, my mother said I was meant for greatness.
I would be more than my ancestors could have ever dreamed.
I hope I haven't disappointed her...
ELISSA: I'm sure she's very proud of you.
NIALL: It is time for us both to be on our way.
Remember the Litany of Adralla.
The Circle is all that matters now.
Thank you.
And goodbye.
Friend.
CULLEN: This trick again?
I know what you are.
It won't work. I will stay strong!
ELISSA: ...Are you alright?
WYNNE: The boy is exhausted.
And this cage, I - I've never seen anything like it!
Rest easy, help is here.
CULLEN: (cries out in distress)
Enough visions!
If anything in you is human (cries out)
kill me now, and stop this game!
You broke the others, but I will stay strong!
For my sake.
For theirs...
Filthy blood mages!
Getting in my head - argh!
I...will...not...break!
I'd rather die!
ELISSA: Calm down - you're safe now.
CULLEN: Silence!
I'll not listen to anything you say - now be gone!
...still here!
But that's always worked before?!
I close my eyes but you are still here when I open them!
ELISSA: I'm real.
And I'm here to help you.
CULLEN: Don't blame me for being cautious.
the voices, the...
the images, so real...
Did Greagoir send you?
How? How did you get here?
ELISSA: I'm a Grey Warden, and I'm trying to help save the Tower.
CULLEN: Good. Kill Uldred.
Kill them all for what they've done!
They caged us like animals...
looked for ways to break us...
I'm the only one left.
STEN: Be proud. You mastered yourself.
CULLEN: Be proud?!
What is there to be proud of - that I lived, and they died?
They turned some into m-monsters, and...
There was nothing I could do.
ELISSA: Uldred will pay for what he's done.
CULLEN: To think - I once felt *pity* for the Circle!
Now I'd like nothing more than to wipe their taint of the face of Thedas!
ELISSA: Not all mages are evil!
CULLEN: Only mages have that much power at their fingertips.
Only mages are so susceptible to the infernal whisperings of the demons!
WYNNE: This is a discussion for another time.
Irving, and the other mages who fought Uldred -
Where are they?
CULLEN: They are in the Harrowing Chamber...
The sounds coming out from there...
Oh Maker!
WYNNE: We must hurry.
They are in grave danger, I am sure of it.
CULLEN: You can't save them!
You don't know what they've become.
ELISSA: I don't understand - what are you afraid of?
CULLEN: They've been surrounded by blood mages whose
wicked fingers snake into your mind and
corrupt your thoughts!
You have to end it now, before it's too late!
ELISSA: I want to save everyone who can possibly be saved!
CULLEN: Are you really saving anyone by taking this risk?
To ensure this horror is ended
To guarantee that no abominations or blood mages live,
you must kill everyone up there!
ELISSA: I cannot decide on that before seeing what's going on.
CULLEN: That is your choice to make, but I beg you to consider what I have to say.
You cannot tell Maleficarum by sight.
Just *one* could influence the mind of a King or a Grand Cleric!
ELISSA: I do not want the blood of innocents on my hands!
CULLEN: I am just willing to see the painful truth!
Which you are content to ignore!
Ah, but what can I do?
STEN: What he says makes sense, do not discard it out of hand.
These mages are out of control.
ELISSA: It isn't that simple, Sten!
STEN: Perhaps.
CULLEN: As you can see, I am in no position to directly influence your actions
Though I would love to deal with the mages myself.
ELISSA: Good.
Then you can't cause any trouble.
My cage is Uldred's doing.
Or one of his mages'.
Once they're dead, I will be free.
ELISSA: Stay safe.
It will be over soon.
CULLEN: No-one ever listens.
Not until it's far too late.
Maker turn his gaze on you.
I hope your compassion hasn't doomed us all.
(lightning echoes throughout the chamber)
(shouts of pain)
ULDRED: Do you accept the gift that I offer?
(yells)
(roars)
ULDRED: Ah.
Look what we have here.
An intruder.
I bid you welcome.
Care to join in our...revels?
ELISSA: I take it you're Uldred?
ULDRED: Oh, very observant.
I'm quite impressed you're still alive.
Unfortunately, that must mean you killed my servants.
Oh well, they are probably better off dying in the service of their betters
than living with the terribly responsibility of independence.
ELISSA: You're turning these people into abominations!
ULDRED: And freeing them in the process.
A mage is but the larval form of something greater.
Your 'Chantry' vilifies us - calls us 'abominations'
when we have truly reached our full potential.
Look at them!
The Chantry has them convinced - they deny themselves the pleasure
of becoming something *glorious*!
WYNNE: You're mad!
There's nothing glorious about what you've become, Uldred!
ULDRED: (laughs) Uldred?
He is gone!
I am Uldred, and yet not Uldred.
I am *more* than he was.
I could give you this gift, Wynne. You and all mages.
It would be so much easier if you just...accepted it.
But some people can be so stubborn.
ELISSA: I'm glad so many of them stood up to you.
ULDRED: And what good did that do? I still won.
I even have the First Enchanter on my side.
Don't I, Irving...?
WYNNE: What have you done to him?!
IRVING: (laboured breathing) Stop...him...
he...is...building an army...
he will...destroy the Templars...and-
ULDRED: You're a sly little fox, Irving!
Telling on me like that...
And here I thought he was starting to turn.
IRVING: (panting) Never!
ULDRED: That's enough out of you, Irving.
He'll serve me eventually.
As will you.
ELISSA: What's that supposed to mean?
ULDRED: Oh, I'm not stupid!
Do you think I'm going to let you to wander around this Tower
knowing you are a pawn of the Templars?
You, are a thorn in my side!
And I must remove you before you fester!
ELISSA: So you're trying to kill me, then.
ULDRED: Killing you would be a waste.
Your raw potential...
With the strength of a demon behind it would be unstoppable!
I can do that.
I can give you power.
And a new life.
ELISSA: Yeah - that doesn't sound very appealing to me.
ULDRED: I don't think your opinion matters.
That is what I've decided, and that is what will be done.
Fight, if you must.
It will just make my victory all the sweeter.
WYNNE: Don't forget the Litany - it will thwart Uldred's attempts to control the mages
and win this fight for us!
(demon roars)
WYNNE: Uldred's doing something - stop him!
ULDRED: (shouts incantation)
WYNN: He's doing something to the mages!
IRVING: Maker...
I'm too old for this.
WYNNE: Irving - are you alright?
IRVING: I've...been better.
But I am thankful to be alive.
I suppose that is your doing, isn't it, Wynne?
WYNNE: I wasn't alone. I had help.
IRVING: The Circle owes both of you a debt we will never be able to repay.
Come. The Templars await.
We shall let them know that the Tower is once again ours.
ELISSA: Very well, lead on.
IRVING: I'll need you to guide me down the stairs.
IRVING: Ugh. Curse whoever insisted the Circle be housed in a Tower...
GREGOIR: Irving?
Maker's breath!
I did not expect to see you alive!
IRVING: It is over, Greagoir.
Uldred...is dead.
CULLEN: Uldred tortured these mages
hoping to break their wills and turn them into abominations.
We don't know how many of them have turned...
IRVING: What? Don't be ridiculous.
CULLEN: Of course he'll say that - he might be a blood mage!
Don't you know what they did?
I won't let this happen again!
GREAGOIR: I am the Knight-Commander here - not you.
ELISSA: Well, what does the Knight-Commander think then?
GREAGOIR: We have won back the Tower.
I will accept Irving's assurance that all is well.
CULLEN: But they may have demons within them, lying dormant!
Lying in wait!
GREAGOIR: Enough!
I have already made my decision.
Thank you.
You have proven yourself a friend of both the Circle and the Templars.
ELISSA: And what about the darkspawn?
I require aid.
GREAGOIR: I promised you aid.
But with the Circle restored, my duty is to watch the mages.
They are free to help you, however.
Speak to them.
ELISSA: And what will the Templars do?
GREAGOIR: For now, I will have to oversee a sweep of the Tower.
There may be some survivors and we should do our best to tend to them.
Please excuse me.
And Irving?
It is good to have you back.
IRVING: Ah, I'm sure we'll be at each other's throats again in no time.
Here we are, the Tower in disarray...
the Circle nearly annihilated.
Though it could have been much, much worse.
I am glad you arrived when you did.
It's almost as thought the Maker himself sent you.
ELISSA: The Blight drove me here to seek aid.
IRVING: The least we can do is help you against the darkspawn.
I would hate to survive this only to be overcome by the Blight.
ELISSA: What about the Tower? Don't you have to stay here?
IRVING: We will do what we can for now.
But if the blight spreads,
the Tower itself will be lost.
Stopping the Blight is more important.
You have my word, as First Enchanter
The Circle will join the Grey Wardens in the fight.
WYNNE: Irving - I have a request.
I seek leave to follow the Grey Warden.
IRVING: Wynne, we need you here.
The Circle needs you.
WYNNE: I appreciate the sentiment, Irving.
But the Circle will do fine without me.
The Circle has you.
This woman is brave and good,
and capable of great things.
If she will accept my help, I will help her accomplish her goals.
ELISSA: I would be honoured to have you join me, Wynne.
IRVING: You were never one to stay in the Tower...
when there was adventure to be had elsewhere.
WYNNE: Why stay, when I can be of service elsewhere?
IRVING: Then I give you leave to follow the Grey Warden.
But know that you will always have a place here.
There is much to be done here
and I must go.
You must forgive me for not being a proper host.
ELISSA: I understand.
'Til we meet again.
IRVING: When the time comes, we will stand beside you.
