CHRISSY: WARNING:
If you clicked this video for the title, you are watching inspiration porn.
Just to let you know.
RIKKI: So, today, what we are going to do is a fun little test.
We are kinda making fun - not really - but kinda,
"Deaf Girl (Or Whoever) Hears for the First Time."
But I am going to try on hearing aids
for the first time today.
CHRISSY: It's gonna be fun! I have hearing aids.
RIKKI: New, clean ones!
CHRISSY: In the past, my hearing aids would help me hear a little bit,
but, now, not really.
I have them for comfort reasons.
They don't really benefit me anymore.
I'm Deaf.
We'll see if this helps.
Just trying an experiment.
RIKKI: And your friends have tried this before.
CHRISSY: My hearing friends have tried my hearing aids
before and they always freak out.
Like, "What's happening?!"
They said it sounds like a frying pan, like the sizzle.
I don't know what that sounds like, but...
In the past for me, it sounded normalish,
kinda robotic, little overwhelming.
RIKKI: Hearing aids don't work for everyone
and not everyone wants a hearing aid.
Not everyone has hearing aids.
CHRISSY: Now we'll try this experiment.
Ready?
RIKKI: I don't know how to put them on.
CHRISSY: Rikki, are you ready to be fixed?
We'll fix your problems now.
Everything will be better!
RIKKI: OK.
RIKKI: It feels, like, bigger than my earbuds.
CHRISSY: They are made for my ears, so-
RIKKI: Right, so they won't fit me.
That's why this is just a fun test;
It's not-
CHRISSY: It's an experiment.
They are off now. I will turn them on.
RIKKI: OK.
(SOFT ELECTRONIC MUSIC)
(AUDIO FEEDBACK)
CHRISSY: (LAUGHS)
(FEEDBACK CONTINUES)
RIKKI: It's ringing.
CHRISSY: Can you hear my voice?
Rikki: No.
(MUSIC CONTINUES)
(CONTINUOUS HIGH-PITCHED TONE)
(HIGH-PITCHED AUDIO FEEDBACK)
(CLAP)
(FEEDBACK CONTINUES)
RIKKI: It's like screeching in my ears.
It's like...
They're both just loud. They can hear it.
(HIGH-PITCHED TONE CONTINUES)
CHRISSY: What?
RIKKI: The sound..
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: ...waves in the mic.
CHRISSY: (LAUGHS)
(HIGH-PITCHED TONE CONTINUES)
RIKKI: It hurts.
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: Move it til it stops
RIKKI: I think I heard the dogs.
(AUDIO FEEDBACK CONTINUES)
RIKKI: Testing, testing...
Oh, I'm hearing myself differently.
Oh, that's weird.
CHRISSY: I want to try a voice test.
RIKKI: Okay, I heard you.
But I can't hear on this one.
(AUDIO FEEDBACK CONTINUES)
Wow, it sounds like a robot.
CHRISSY: I'm gonna play one of your videos.
RIKKI: It's just ringing so loud.
CHRISSY: You can turn them off if you want.
RIKKI: Oh, it stopped. Oh shit, that's loud.
(LAUGHS)
VIDEO: Last week I made a storytelling video...
CHRISSY: Your voice.
VIDEO: ...talking about everything that happened while I was -
I said I would make a more generalized video...
RIKKI: I don't understand myself.
CHRISSY: I hear nothing.
(VIDEO CONTINUES)
CHRISSY: So I have a thing called a compilot.
It plays music directly into my hearing aids,
so we'll try that too.
RIKKI: I hear more, but it's all unclear.
(INDISCERNIBLE VIDEO AUDIO)
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: Let's try music.
(MUSIC PLAYS SOFTLY)
CHRISSY: I got new rules, I count 'em.
(MUSIC CONTINUES)
CHRISSY: Can you hear a little bit?
RIKKI: Yeah, but it's still muffled. Really unclear.
(LIP SYNCING)
RIKKI: One - don't pick up the phone.
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: Two - don't let him in;
you'll have to kick him out again.
RIKKI: Three - don't be his friend.
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: Forest and natural sounds.
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: I don't know what it sounds like.
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: (LAUGHS)
RIKKI: Dogs are barking.
(DOG BARKS)
Wait, was that the video or the dog?
(DOG BARKS)
Sounds like a dog.
(DOG BARKS)
(DOG BARKS LOUDER)
(DOG BARKS)
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: (LAUGHS)
RIKKI: What the fuck?
What the fuck is that?
CHRISSY: Birds.
(BIRD SOUNDS)
RIKKI: They sound awful.
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: Now I understand why people hate birds on Saturday morning.
CHRISSY: (LAUGHS)
(BIRD SOUNDS CONTINUE)
(CLAPS)
CHRISSY: (WHISTLING)
(DOG BARKS)
(WHISTLING)
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: It's you and the dogs.
(CLAPPING)
Jenna's probably like,
"What the fuck are you doing?"
Right now, my head is starting to hurt.
I'm getting dizzy.
CHRISSY: So, what do you think?
RIKKI: Why do people wear these?
I know why but - wow.
I sound different to myself too.
I think...
CHRISSY: The dogs?
RIKKI: Yeah.
Before without the hearing aids, I couldn't hear them.
Well, I can if I'm really close to them,
but being in this room, I can't hear them barking.
(DOG BARKS)
But right now it's very loud.
Right now, I'm hearing, like, little things
and I'm just like ah, it's weird.
The sound kinda hurts.
CHRISSY: Yeah, I'm used to having hearing aids.
Before (when I could hear some sounds),
if there was wind, I heard nothing.
But loud never bothered me.
I've never had enough hearing to hear loud things.
Now my hearing aids don't really help
because my hearing loss is progressive.
RIKKI: Now, I can hear like the little noises
you make when you're signing.
Wow.
Wait, I need to - (FAKE SOBS) - OK...
CHRISSY: (LAUGHS)
CHRISSY: I'm going to voice simple sentences.
RIKKI: OK. (DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: Time for my audiology test.
CHRISSY: Hi, my name is Chrissy. Nice to meet you.
RIKKI: Hi, my name is Chrissy, then something.
CHRISSY: Good morning, good afternoon, good night.
RIKKI: Good day.
CHRISSY: How was your weekend?
RIKKI: How was your weekend?
CHRISSY: See you later, goodnight.
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: I didn't understand that.
CHRISSY: What is your favorite color?
RIKKI: Blue- and red, whatever.
CHRISSY: What is the name of your campaign?
RIKKI: #NoMoreCRAPtions - Check out the shirt!
They are probably on sale now
when you are watching this, so go buy one.
CHRISSY: Who is your favorite YouTuber?
RIKKI: Um, favorite YouTuber… Kat Blaque.
CHRISSY: Who is your favorite musical artist?
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: Probably, just to name one of them, Epik High.
CHRISSY: What do you make YouTube videos about?
RIKKI: Deafness.
Apparently trying to hear for the first time.
Accessibility, disability, mental health.
Whatever I want.
CHRISSY: What state do you live in?
RIKKI: North Carolina.
CHRISSY: What do you think of having hearing aids on?
RIKKI: It hurts. It's weird.
Like everything is just louder
and it's like mmm..
I feel like I'm barely voicing,
very quiet, but it's still really loud.
(DOG BARKS)
The dogs are not helping.
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: Yeah, the hearing aids are ultra too.
They tried to get better ones for my hearing loss.
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: Please stop.
(DOG BARKS)
CHRISSY: Weird experience.
RIKKI: An experience, and they are still on right now.
CHRISSY: Any comments you want to add?
(DOG BARKS)
RIKKI: Can I take them off now?
CHRISSY: Yes. (LAUGHS)
RIKKI: I don't wanna break them.
I don't know how to use them.
Wow.
CHRISSY: Back to normal.
RIKKI: Like, I don't like having headphones
on for a long time, so that's like a lot.
CHRISSY: Overwhelming?
RIKKI: Yeah, now I know they work,
but hearing aids are expensive.
Insurance doesn't...
CHRISSY: Being under 18 helps.
RIKKI: I think it's different for like every state.
CHRISSY: I don't know.
I know they make it more difficult when
you're over 18 for new hearing aids.
RIKKI: Not everyone is qualified, not everyone wants them,
but if you want them, get them.
CHRISSY: It's been an interesting experiment.
Hopefully, you are watching and
realize this is different than the normal videos
when people get hearing aids and
it's a big change like magically they hear everything.
No, that's not what happens.
RIKKI: It's like a robot.
It doesn't make everything clear.
Just louder and unclear.
CHRISSY: Remember when I was younger,
it takes time to understand receptively.
One time is different than getting used to having them,
but still learn that it's not easy, it's not a fix.
RIKKI: That was a fun time.
Now we're finished.
