Research Tips for a Made-Up World (Writer Wednesday) [CC] - Duration: 4:17.

Hello Writer, and welcome back to my life.

It's Writer Wednesday, the day I give you MY tips and advice on the art AND the BUSINESS

of writing, and tell you how I do what I do as an indie author.

Today we're going to talk about an interesting topic—well, they're all somewhat interesting.

I hope.

Otherwise, why do I make these video?

Boy, it's early in the video for an existential crisis.

ANYWAY, the topic today is research tips for a made-up world.

There's lots of things we as writers have to research.

Yes, ever book I've written has had at least SOME research.

Even my literary novel Rebel Yell, which was set in modern-day Los Angeles about an indie

rock band.

Ah, the Rebel Yell days.

Remember those days?

If you do, you're one of less than 100 people.

But research gets a lot more tricky when your world isn't REAL.

Because how can you RESEARCH things that don't actually EXIST?

I mean, it's one thing when I research horses.

Which I spend an inordinate amount of time on.

Because every time I publish a book of Underrealm, there's a small contingent of readers, led

by fellow Underrealm author Brenna Gawain, who send emails along the lines of:

"Just read the book.

Loved it!

Great story.

Good job.

However … Garrett, horses just don't work like that."

I'm getting better.

Honestly, I am.

But this actually leads us into the first answer to this question.

Because even the most fantastic worlds are going to have SOME relation to our own.

Whether it's historical-esque fantasy, like my books, or far-flung futuristic science

fiction, you're going to be drawing on SOME real-world elements.

And even getting into the fantastical or science-fictional elements, starting with modern-day analogues

for whatever bit of worldbuilding you're working on is a great way to begin.

To realistically write a wizard casting a fireball, you've got to have some understanding

of thermodynamics and HOW fire actually works and WHAT a wizard can do with it while still

obeying the laws of physics, even if physics has NOTHING to do with where the magical flame

COMES from.

And futuristic sci-fi often builds itself upon a premise drawn from something going

on in the world today, and the more you research CURRENT events, the BETTER and more REALISTICALLY

you can extrapolate and build interesting narratives around FUTURE events.

Now, as I said, this is a good place to start.

You've got some real-world facts to draw from.

You can read about them.

In many cases, as with horses, you can go out and see them in the real world.

However, there is another sort of research that I believe is crucial in building a good

made-up world that stands out in whatever genre you happen to be writing in.

And that is to research what has ALREADY been done before.

Let's take a perfect example: magic systems.

If you're writing fantasy, like I am, it's very likely you're going to have some sort

of system of magic.

And if you're not careful, you can easily end up miming or mimicking a fantasy system

that's already been created by someone else, and maybe even be accused of copying them.

As a good, diligent writer, you're ALREADY reading a lot of books in your genre, aren't

you?

… AREN'T YOU???

Well, you should be studying them with a professional eye, and part of that is seeing what's been

done before.

For example, on this same topic of magic systems, you should definitely go read everything Brandon

Sanderson has ever written, because dude is the nearly-uncontested KING of magic systems.

And studying what he's done, in detail, will not only help you avoid doing the same

thing and possibly be accused of copy-catting, but it can provide inspiration for your OWN

ideas about what sort of magic system you want to have.

As with many other things, I like to find some of my favorite examples of a worldbuilding

convention, and then isolate what I DON'T like or what I feel is MISSING from each of

them, and then sort of combine those into a new idea.

For example, you CAN see the influence of Sanderson's novel Mistborn in the four (or

six) branches of magic present in Underrealm.

But the way they mirror, contrast, and conflict with each other, as well as their strengths

and weaknesses against each other, bear a closer resemblance to the four types of bending

in Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

And of course, the various ways the magics are cast—and, therefore, the ways they can

be dispelled or guarded against—draw a lot of inspiration from the Verbal, Component,

and Somatic mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons.

I'm getting in depth on magic systems to illustrate the point, but this could be applied

to any sort of far-flung, speculative fiction worldbuilding.

You're writing a book about dragonriders?

First of all, Alex, I'm really glad, and I think it's going to be great.

Second of all, read as many dragon books as you can to see what's been done before!

The Inheritance Cycle, Dragonriders of Pern, and yes, How to Train Your Dragon.

You're doing space opera with a focus on Artificial Intelligence?

You'd better read all four of the Ender's Game books.

Just … buy them from a USED bookstore.

Orson knows what he did.

Learning what's come before you can help you create a new addition to the catalog of

whatever particular zeitgeist you happen to be writing in that will be both fresh and

exciting and, possibly, will never have been seen before.

But it will also allow you to include enough of the familiar and the comfortable to ensure

that readers in your genre will enjoy going on the new journey YOU plan to take them on.

sets to put together you get all the

so here are each one is numbers though

they are very clearly numbered and it's

thick wood guys you can see it's a nice

thick wood but they pop off super nice

and easy and they're really strong I

mean these are not cardboard this is

solid wood so you get one sheet of

pieces two sheets three sheets four

sheets five sheets of pieces and then

you get like the controls they give you

some paper pieces here offer the legs if

it doesn't walk correctly here you've

got like the leg controls you have to

put in and plug in you've got some

pieces here or spring and other pieces

the remote control and this would be the

two sensors for the light and this sound

so you do have to put them together but

it is

hours to put together so be prepared for

that I mean it does take some patience

but then you got an awesome work of art

that also battles and walks and wars

they are totally cool so I'm gonna first

of all go ahead turn these guys off

we're gonna go ahead and take a look at

them individually and then we'll have a

battle together cool well the t-rex won

you could see I mean this guy is a

really nice big Dino even when he's not

on you could move him forward and he

does open and close his mouth way up his

arms do move here so it looks almost

like he's actually walking which when

you put him in remote control mode which

I'll show you in a moment

he does actually walk so this thing is

more similar

to a walking dinosaur skeleton I mean it

is just totally awesome I can't say

enough about this I love Roker actually

sent these to me to review for you guys

it's spelled are okay R I'll put a link

below where you could actually buy them

so it has a speaker here and here is the

battery pack where you put in the

batteries and then it has a light and

voice sensor up top there so really cool

the legs move back and forth because he

does walk the tail swings back and forth

like that so you could even play with

this guy when you don't feel like having

him walk or maybe the batteries died or

something so first thing I'm gonna do

show you guys different mug so it does

come with a cool little remote control

here that identifies what it is so this

is the t-rex

sometimes he does fall over I think he

just needs adjusting I just don't really

have the time so uh anyways here he is

this button here let's see if I put them

in remote control if you push this first

button here that is the roaring action

so here let's push the button in half

okay so let's go ahead and check out the

features all right now there is three

modes there is remote mode demo mode and

free mode in remote mode you actually

have this cool little remote you could

control him so if you push here he opens

and closes his mouth and he roars and

then here he walks forward and turned

left and right so if you pushed the

forward button he does walk forward sort

of shuffles like an old man but you know

this is a wooden model dinosaur and here

I'm having him turn to the left okay

sorry about that so here I'm gonna have

him turn to the right one of the

batteries became loose and he did not

want to respond and then you could have

a walk and turn at the same time okay

let me move him a little bit more back

I thought he does shuffle along like go

right to the park if it was big enough

and then also he does have other modes

so just take the remote here and you put

it in demo mode it does all the

different things it's sound activated

there you can see the song got it you

could clap your hands and it does roar

and move and

do different stuff or if you want even

the better mode is free mode here

because it has three modes of activation

first let me get them to stop first so

free mode it just does stop by itself

freely also it has a light sensor here

if it notices a difference in light it

will roar and move around there you can

see the light sensor or its sound

activated too so let me let me turn it

off first

so a clap or talk or yelling at or

anything like that will activate it so

that is really awesome and then let's

take a look at the Triceratops okay with

the Triceratops you have the three modes

also first of all go ahead turn it on I

have it in remote control mode so if you

push forward it walks forward if you

push the head it will raise and lower

its head like it's the tech and roar so

there it's attacking the t-rex and then

move forward you know get it and then

also this one does turn - so here he is

turning if you see a sped up its turning

to the left it's a little slick surface

here so it's not the best conductor

there it does have a hard time on carpet

so if you have a surface that's not as

smooth as this but a little smoother

than carpet here if you hold it up you

can see there it's trying to turn and

then I will have it walking forward

there it's walking forward you can see

the joints the legs moving

like authentic movement in the swing the

tail swings back and forth and then you

can have it more alright does sort of

have to finish its movement it's doing

at the time but here I'm having it move

it so these are so and then the other

modes you have again you've got demo

mode where it's gonna do different stuff

I found it easiest if you turn it off

first so there is demo mode but are the

movement the one where you get the most

movement is the free mode so here I just

noticed the difference in light because

it's got the light sensors of the top

there so if you turn off the lights or

something it will notice the difference

and then uh in a free mode it just does

stuff by itself all kinds of different

movement

or sound-activated in free mode so it is

a really awesome dyno here you can see

it's it looks like Triceratops skeleton

these are all wood guys so they are good

quality dinosaur toys and they are works

of art so when you're not actually using

it I mean you can display these and they

just look totally cool so I'm gonna go

ahead turn this guy off

pull him back to remote mode and we

could actually have him like attack our

t-rex so our zombie t-rex is here zombie

t-rex is up and right in the belly

triceratop t-rex is down to Triceratops

now he's celebrating so anyways guys if
