hi and welcome to this Google sheets tutorial in this tutorial we will be
learning how to freeze rows and columns and apply conditional formatting both of
these functions will be very useful when dealing with large spreadsheets by the
end of this tutorial you will be able to freeze rows or columns and apply
conditional formatting so let's get to it okay so as you can see I have a sheet
here with some values in it and I'm going to go ahead and freeze the top row
okay so the first thing I'm going to do is go up to view go then down to freeze
here and since I only have one row of headers I will click one row which will
freeze the top row so you can see now if I scroll up or down I always have that
first row on the screen so I can see which categories I'm looking at now if I
wanted to freeze the first column instead I would just go up to view
freeze and select say the first column like so so it's a little less dramatic
but you can see if I scroll right to left now the first column will always be
on the screen finally if for whatever reason I want to freeze several rows or
several columns all I have to do is go to view freeze and then up to current
row or up to current column as you can see I have row ten selected currently so
if I do up to current row it now freezes everything from one to ten as
you can see as I'm scrolling here so that's about it for freezing rows and
columns now we'll move on to conditional formatting the first step in conditional
formatting is to select the cells we want to format so I'm going to go ahead
and select column D here because the usage ratio is what I want to format
next I'm going to go up to format and then select conditional formatting here
okay so the way I'm going to use conditional formatting is by applying a
test to the cells I have selected basically I'm going to test whether the
value in the cell is greater than or lesser than a number in this case that
number will be one
so as you can see a few of the cells over here already have their background
color changed that's as a result of the test here I'm going to go ahead and hit done
and now it's applied so you can see all of the rows that have usage ratio of
greater than one which is basically just going to be the well-known romance
author ones will be green okay so I'm going to add another rule now we're
going to go ahead and reselect column D go back up to format here go to
conditional formatting again and click on add new rule so instead of testing if
the value is greater than a certain amount this time I'm going to test
whether it's less than specifically I'm going to test whether it's less than 0.2
and I'm going to apply a different color formatting to that which will be red and
hit done so now I can tell at a glance whether a certain book is over
performing or under performing which could be very useful in a big
spreadsheet also because these rules are being applied automatically at this
point to that column if I change the value in one of these fields the
formatting will automatically apply as well okay that's it for this tutorial
you should now be able to freeze rows or columns and apply basic conditional
formatting thank you
