THE TOP 5 MOST HAUNTED HOUSES IN AMERICA.
Almost one third of Americans claim to have been to, or have lived in a haunted house, would you stay in one of these for the night?.
Straight in at Number 5... LaLaurie House.
Bought in 1831, by Marie Delphine LaLaurie and her husband and extensively extended and remodeled,
this elegant New Orleans mansion was the height of luxury and refinement for its day.
However,
it held a far more sinister secret in its slave quarter and attic space.
While Madame LaLaurie seemed normal to her white high-society counterparts,
she enjoyed the torture and murder of her slaves in private.
In 1834, a slave that had been chained to the stove in the kitchen started a fire in an attempt to either commit suicide or gain help,
and it was at this time that the chained and mutilated slaves were found,
causing a huge backlash of anger that culminated in a large mob descending on the mansion and destroying it.
LaLaurie escaped and fled to France where she died about a decade later.
The aftereffects of her malicious actions are still felt to this day, however, as extreme paranormal occurrences have been routinely reported at the mansion ever since the mid-19th century.
Screams and groans are often heard,
and apparitions of chained and mutilated slaves are often seen, much to the horror of visitors.
Some have even reported being attacked by what appears to be the spirit of Madame LaLaurie.
scary or what.
Now Number 4...Franklin Castle.
On Cleveland's Franklin Boulevard,
locals still whisper rumors about the original owner of the 20-room-plus 19th century dwelling.
In just a few short years in the 1890s,
the mansion became the place of death of four of Hannes Tiedemann's adolescent children and his wife.
Though Tiedemann was never found guilty of any wrongdoing,
today some people claim he hung his 13-year-old illegitimate daughter and made it appear like a suicide and that he killed his mistress in a secret passage.
Known as "the most haunted house in Ohio," the castle is rumored to be visited by ghosts.
Lets go to number 3...the Myrtles Plantation.
When attorney William Winter was shot by a stranger outside his Louisiana home,
he died attempting to climb the stairs within.
While his murder is the only confirmed manslaughter on the property of the Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville,
legend says that more than 12 ghosts linger on the property.
If you're dying to visit one of America's most haunted homes,
The Myrtles Plantation now serves as a hotel and restaurant.
Next Number 2...The Amityville Horror House.
Perhaps one of the most controversial as well as frightening haunted houses in the country,
this rather unassuming small town house was nevertheless the site of a very real mass murder.
In the early hours of November 13, 1974,
Ronald DeFeo Junior stalked through his family's home with a rifle, killing everyone in their beds as they slept.
The victims included his parents and four siblings,
who ranged in age from 9 to 18.
Just over a year later, the Lutz family moved into the home where they began to experience paranormal events so severe that they abruptly left after only living in the house for less than a month.
The events that they experienced included extreme cold spots and odd smells;
slamming doors and moving objects;
their children began sleeping in the manner in which the DeFeo's had all been killed – face down on their stomachs;
their youngest daughter befriended what was described as a demonic entity;
and welts would appear out of nowhere.
And Lastly Number 1...The Winchester House.
Sure that she was being haunted by the ghosts of rifle-slain people,
Winchester Firearms widow Sarah Winchester fled from Connecticut to build a mansion in San Jose,
The Winchester House was an expensive, labor-intensive project that resulted in a cavernous, confusing home.
So disconcerting that it's now called "The Mystery House,"
the Winchester mansion contains rooms without floors and staircases that lead to nowhere — architectural oddities often attributed to Sarah Winchester's fear of the spectral spirits that haunt the property.
In death, her own soul is said to have joined those that haunted her in life,
so don't be surprised if you see the widow make an appearance during a tour of the mansion.
