When it comes to an artist like Kanye, who obviously takes a lot of time with his material
before it's released, it's intriguing to not only check out how people react when
his new music hits, but how the final product may differ from the leaked version.
Hell, some tracks never even see the light of day, and in those moments, we get to dive
a bit deeper into Kanye West's psyche.
With a trio of tracks leaking over the weekend, we feel like now is as good a time as any
to take a look back at Kanye's history of leaks, taking note of what changed, what stayed
the same, and most frustrating, what has remained unreleased.
May 28, 2010 - No one man should leak all that "Power"
In May of 2010, a reportedly unfinished, unmixed leak of the lead single from Kanye West's
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy hit the internet to overwhelmingly joyous approval.
There wasn't much that changed between the leaked version of "Power" and the official
release the following June, with Complex's Editor In Chief Noah Callahan-Bever calling
it a "glimpse" of what the end result would be.
May 31, 2013 - Q-Tip introduced us to "Mama's Boyfriend"
For years, a track by the name of "Mama's Boy" had turned into the stuff of legend.
It was said that Kanye spit it acapella for the Facebook offices during the promo run
for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, but it never ended up on the release.
A fake version was posted online in 2011, but it wasn't until Q-Tip's 2013 Red Bull
Music Academy lecture that we got to hear a piece of the track, which was rumored to
have had Soulja Boy on it at one time.
After hearing how upbeat the track sounds, it's not hard to see why it wasn't included
on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Aug. 12, 2014 - Someone recorded "All Day" on their phone
In one of the worst examples of someone on the internet yelling "FIRST!," a cellphone
recording of Kanye's massive single "All Day" hit the internet almost a year before
its March 2015 release.
Kanye reportedly continued working on the track until March of 2015, but it didn't
matter; "All Day" sat at #1 on Billboard's Twitter Trending 140 chart for five hours
based on that incomplete leak.
Apr. 11, 2015 - Kanye's got the "Midas Touch"
While there's no word on how this one hit the digital streets, Kanye's "Midas Touch"
sounded like a reference track for Rihanna in the vein of "Bitch Better Have My Money."
The timing made sense, considering that "FourFiveSeconds," the collaboration between Kanye, Rihanna,
and Paul McCartney, had been released in January of 2015, but since this was leaked, there's
been no word on what this track was supposed to become.
Mar. 11, 2015 - Kanye thinks Kim Kardashian is "Awesome"
Many first heard this autotune-heavy back in 2013 when Kanye performed it at the Met
Gala.
After Kanye's laptop was stolen, "Awesome," which was an ode to his wife Kim Kardashian,
hit the internet, and folks weren't feeling it.
Whether it was the vocals or the lyrics, folks weren't trying to hear 'Ye on some love-y
dove-y sh*t.
The song ultimately never saw an official release.
Jan. 21, 2016 - Miley Cyrus hops on "Black Skinhead"
Around the tail-end of Miley's rap phase, a version of Kanye's Yeezus banger "Black
Skinhead" hit the internet featuring Miley Cyrus singing lyrics from Tears For Fears'
"Everybody Wants to Rule The World."
Kanye's lyrics were the same, although his delivery was a bit toned down, and it sounded
like there were some Travis Scott vocals layered throughout the song.
It's a remix that had been rumored since Mike Will Made-It spoke on it back in September
of 2013, but this leak was the only way anyone could hear it.
Feb. 18, 2016 - A Redditor releases a gang of 'Pablo' songs
Roughly four days after the release of Kanye's seventh solo album, 'The Life of Pablo,'
got its release, someone on Reddit leaked a batch of Kanye tracks, many of which appeared
to be original or demoed versions of songs that ended up on 'Pablo.'
On it was the original version of "Wolves," full versions of "Waves" and "Fade,"
and new songs like "Only One," "New Angels," a remix of "All Day."
While Kanye had mentioned that he had a bunch of unreleased music on him, he never acknowledged
this particular batch of songs.
Mar. 31, 2016 - Apple Music accidentally leaks "Saint Pablo"
About a week after the release of 'The Life of Pablo,' Kanye played the Sampha-featured
"Saint Pablo" at a party in L.A., which we thought he wasn't doing anymore.
Anyways, at the end of March, Apple Music accidentally posted "Saint Pablo" on their
service for a few hours before being taken down, only to be officially added to his evolving
album 'The Life of Pablo' on June 14th.
Oct. 6, 2016 - Young Thug hops on "Famous" One of the most controversial tracks on 'Pablo'
was "Famous," which featured an intriguing video and some scathing bars for Taylor Swift.
In October of 2016, an unreleased version of "Famous" hit the internet, and not
only did Young Thug replace Swizz Beatz and Rihanna on the track, but Kanye also threw
Amber Rose's name into the mix.
This version never got an official release.
June 4, 2017 - The Music Mafia strikes Two days after a group calling themselves
the Music Mafia hacked Drake's Twitter, they somehow got their hands on two tracks
from Kanye West.
One track, which is apparently titled "Euro (Switch Hands)," features ASAP Rocky and
Kanye on his stream of consciousness sh*t, while another is titled "Hold Tight,"
and features Young Thug and the Migos.
The third, apparently titled "Can U Be," that was a snippet of a song that had been
online for over a year in the form of a video of Kanye dancing to it in the studio.
While Kanye's reportedly working on his next album, which may be titled Turbo Grafx
16, on the top of a mountain in Wyoming, there's no indication that any of these tracks will
land on that project.
What does any of this mean, though?
Well, for one, some of these unreleased tracks showcase just how much completed material
Kanye is sitting on.
Through some of the demo and alternate versions, we get to see how much time, effort, and change
goes into Kanye West completing a track.
Ultimately, these leaks confirm what we've known for years: Kanye West is one of the
most creative artists in music.
Hopefully there's a massive compilation of completed, previously-unreleased material
from 'Ye that we can get our hands on some day.
