How to turn from a pure beginner to begin learning Advanced Skills

Formula is a feature available in Spreadsheets only.
You can not find the Formula Bar anywhere in Google Docs or Google Slides.
The technical definition of a formula is a systematic procedure to manipulate data, calculate
strings and numbers.
Technical definition aside, let's see how to use a formula and what formula can do.
Using formula in Google Sheets is very similar
to coding and programming.
To use formula you begin with an equal sign.
This equal sign is well-known as assignment in coding.
Typing "= A1+B1*D1" in Cell C1 has the same meaning as C1 = A1+B1*D1.
Hence, the result of A1+B1*D1 is shown in Cell C1.
However, unlike coding, you could not have endless circular dependency in Spreadsheets.
So, after you have C1=A1+B1*D1.
You can not have A1=C1.
What I have been showing you is a math formula
you are calculating the result of A1+B1*D1.
Beside that, you also can express boolean (or logic) with the formula.
I talk more about that in the next lecture.
So what about functions?
Preset Functions in Google Sheets is often
just called Functions.
To use a particular function, you need to call it.
To call it, you need to type name of the Function and fill in the necessary Parameters in the
bracket to successfully call the Function.
Some function have no parameters and some function have optional parameters.
You can learn more about that in the very helpful box that appear every single time
you type a function name.
Google Sheets is an excellent tool for self-learning.
They even have the function list.
So when you want to do something out-of-the-box and you think there might be a function that
do exactly what you want.
Then, you can try to find it in the list.
Here are some function you should learn first.
IF(), IS Functions, and VLOOKUP().
