This DV8 Off-Road RS-1 rear bumper with tire carrier and tapered bearing is for those of
you that have a 2007 to 2018 JK that are looking for a rear bumper that's going to give you
a tire carrier to get that big spare tire off the factory mount, but also has some other
off-road-ready features and is also going to offer some better protection to your Jeep
than that factory plastic bumper will.
This bumper is going to be a very easy one-out-of-three-wrench installation.
This will bolt right in place of that factory bumper.
As with most other aftermarket bumpers, no drilling, no major modifications to the Jeep
necessary, but we'll talk a little bit more about that install in just a second.
So DV8 Off-Road does make a couple of different pieces of armor, different types of armor
and different bumpers.
This is going to be a pretty high-quality bumper that has a lot of the features that
you would expect to see in an aftermarket bumper that also has a tire carrier.
The tire carrier has some good adjustability built into it but it says right in the name
that it has a tapered bearing.
That is also very important.
So a couple of the main areas you're going to want to look at when you're trying to buy
a tire carrier-bumper combo are the spindle end and at the latch end.
So if the spindle has bearings in it that means it's gonna hold up better, it's going
to be able to support the weight better, it's not going to rust, to wear out, to get very
difficult to open and close over time and then as long as you have a nice high-quality
latching mechanism, it's not going to rattle or again wear out over time, get rusty, cause
you issues.
So this bumper is going to have the bearings and the spindle end that are going to ensure
that this tire carrier continues to work for a good, long time.
Now DV8 does make some very good stuff and it is also going to be pretty fairly priced
for which you're getting.
A lot of the tire carrier bumpers that are of this configuration are going to be right
in this price range, and you are getting the spindle end with the bearing in it which is
something that I really like.
So overall I think this is a pretty good buy.
So let's talk about the construction of this bumper, what you're really getting.
So you have the bumper here, this has a 2-inch receiver in the center that can be used as
a recovery point.
You have two nice, heavy D-ring mounts and this does come with the D-rings as well for
additional recovery points.
The corners here wrap around the tub a little bit.
They do tuck up so you have some nice style, also some nice protection from this bumper.
The area around the 2-inch receiver, that bolts right through the rear cross member
just like a factory 2-inch receiver would, a tow-ready receiver would so you're gonna
get a lot of strength out of that particular recovery point.
You have a nice, deep cutout here in the bumper that allows you to make your spare tire as
low as possible.
That's gonna give you the maximum viewing out of the rear window of the Jeep.
So overall the bumper is very solid.
The tire carrier, I know we already talked about a couple of those features it has.
The tapered bearing in the spindle end here, it does have a nice high-quality latching
mechanism.
But here are a couple of the other very important things about a tire carrier, you have adjustability
up and down.
Again I just mentioned that that allows you to mount the tire as low as possible to get
the maximum viewing out of the back window so that's something I really like but it's
not a necessity.
What's a little bit more important is in and out adjustability and the adjustability of
the tire mount itself to allow you to push that tire nice and tight up against the carrier.
That's so that you don't have all the weight of the tire hanging out there, moving around,
torquing around every time you hit a bump on road or off-road, fatiguing that metal
and causing issues and also causing noise and rattles that are very, very annoying.
So this tire carrier will allow you to get that tire nice and tight up against the carrier
regardless of what width wheel, what width tire or what backspacing you're running, you're
gonna be able to get everything nice and tight and keep it rattle free.
So you're going to be shopping for a bumper that has a tire carrier for a couple of different
reasons.
If you have a large spare tire on that factory spare tire carrier, the tire carrier itself
can end up fatiguing and breaking.
You can also break the welds and the tailgate, and the hinge mechanism on the tailgate is
also not designed for that additional weight.
So a setup like this where you're moving the spare tire onto a tire carrier that's mounted
onto a bumper is going to solve all those problems.
This bumper and tire carrier come in at $730.
I think that is a very fair price for what you're getting.
This design you can find from a lot of different manufacturers.
There's a couple of small tweaks here and there.
But the overall design is available from a few different places.
What I really like about this one is that they do have the upgraded spindle end here
with the bearing in it.
That's gonna be very important for the longevity of the tire carrier and you keep maintenance
as simple as possible.
So if you are looking for a tire carrier of this design I think this is going to be a
quality one at a fair price.
Now we'll have a member of the install team to show you how you get this bolted up.
We're going to start off by uninstalling our stock bumper.
We have four bolts to remove.
So let's get started.
All right we're going to need a 16-millimeter socket.
We get this bolt out.
I'm using a power ratchet but you guys could use a regular ratchet if that's all you have.
All right.
So we're gonna remove the two bolts on this side of the Jeep now.
I already have one of the bolts removed.
It's a 16-millimeter.
I have it on a power ratchet.
You guys can use a regular ratchet, whatever works easier for you.
And then once your four bolts are out, you can remove the rear bumper.
We can now start installing our new bumper.
The first thing we're going to do is insert these nut plates into the frame rail of the
Jeep.
Next thing we can do is insert the four bolts that were provided.
They're gonna go in with the threads facing out.
You have to put the bolt above the muffler in order to get it into the hole.
And from here we can take our spacer plate and insert it onto the bolts that we just
put in and the next thing we can do is install the new bumper.
So with the help of a friend here, lift up on your bumper and line up your bolts.
Slide them through the spacer and put a washer and a nut on the other side.
We also got two bolts started on each side of the bumper as well.
All right.
We can tighten our bumper up now.
We're gonna start with the four bolts in the center here.
Got an 18-millimeter socket and a 19-millimeter wrench.
We want to tighten up the four in the middle first and then two on the outsides.
The four in the middle here will wind the bumper properly and then we can go to the
outsides and tighten those up.
Now we can move to the outside bolts.
All right I got an 18-millimeter socket on my ratchet here, we're gonna tighten up these
two bolts.
Okay.
Next up is our tire carrier.
We're going to slip it down onto the axle here followed by the castle nut and a cotter
pin.
I have a 34-millimeter socket on my ratchet here to tighten up this castle nut.
If you don't have a socket this big, you can use an adjustable wrench or a pair of pliers.
Just gonna back this off a little bit so I can line hole up for the cotter pin.
All right, now we can slide our cotter pin in.
And with a pair of pliers, we can bend both ends of this over to lock it in place.
All right.
Once you've got your cotter pin and castle nut in place here we can now cap off the top
of the stud here.
DV8 provides you with an Allen wrench for this.
Next, we're going to install the handle lock into place.
All right, with the provided hardware we're going to put a bolt through, a washer on the
bolt, flat washer, lock washer and a nut.
Got a 17-millimeter socket with a 17-millimeter wrench.
Need to tighten these up.
Next thing we're gonna do is install the tire carrier swing stop.
These two bolts are 16-millimeter.
Next thing we're gonna do is bolt up the tire carrier.
And I got an 18-millimeter socket with a 19-millimeter wrench.
All right.
And the last thing we're going to do here is bolt up our tire mount.
And I have an 18-millimeter socket for this.
Now we can put our tire on.
So if you're looking for a quality bumper-tire carrier combination, I'd recommend this option
from DV8 Off-Road and you can find it right here at extremeterrain.com.
