Ali Watkins: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com
Ali Watkins, a New York Times reporter, had years' worth of phone and email records seized by the Trump administration's Justice Department, the Times reported Thursday evening.
On February 13, Watkins found out that federal prosecutors were about to seize the data related to two email accounts and a phone number from telecommunications companies, including Verizon and Google.
A Senate Intelligence Committee staffer was arrested Thursday evening on charges of lying to FBI agents during an investigation into the leak of classified information in which federal authorities seized emails and phone records belonging to Watkins, according to USA Today.
James A.
Wolfe, 58, who served as the director of security for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) for nearly three decades, is alleged to have made false statements to agents in December about his contacts with three reporters, according to federal court documents.
You can read the indictment later in this article in full.
Although the Wolfe indictment does not name the reporters, the Times reported that Watkins was previously in a relationship with Wolfe that she disclosed to the newspaper and other news organizations for which she once worked.
Here's what you need to know about Ali Watkins:.
Watkins Helped Break a High-Profile Story on the CIA's Secret Detention & Interrogation Program.
While still a senior in Temple University's journalism program, Watkins helped break a national story that "had members of the U.S.
Senate pointing fingers at the CIA," according to the Philly Inquirer.
Watkins, a 22-year-old freelancer for McClatchy in Washington, D.C.
at the time, received a tip from trusted sources while she was building herself a name on Capitol Hill, according to a posting by Temple's School of Media and Communication.
The report delves into the CIA's secret detention and interrogation program, the team of reporters said in a story that was widely circulated.
According to the story, the CIA monitored computers used by Senate aides to prepare the 6,300-page study that reportedly included waterboarding and other interrogation methods.
The story made national news for a plethora of reasons, but the biggest issue was that the monitoring violated an agreement between the committee and the agency and "mark[ed] a breakdown in relations between the CIA and Congress," McClatchy reported.
"To me, this story stands as a testament to watchdog journalism," said Watkins, who was previously a Philadelphia Daily News intern.
On Twitter, she pinned a tweet that reads: "Have a story about ATF, DEA or Secret Service? Talk to me securely.
Signal/WhatsApp" and provided a number.
Her Twitter profile reads, "National security at @nytimes.
I like my dog and motorcycles and Philadelphia.
Send secrets and/or whiskey" and gives her New York Times email.
She was Recruited by the Huffington Post Shorly After Breaking the CIA Story & Wrote Tips About Covering SSCI on Twitter.
After Watkins broke the story on the CIA spying on computers used by the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2014, the Huffington Post hired her almost immediately.
Washington bureau chief Ryan Grim had made the announcement to staff in a memo the afternoon that Watkins was hired.
In it, he said, "We knew Ali would be a fantastic hire back when she was a college senior and worked on the McClatchy team that broke the news that the CIA was spying on the Senate Intelligence Committee over the panel's torture report. Ali is a 2014 graduate of Temple University, where she excelled not only in journalism, but as a rower and triathlete as well.
Ali will continue her focus on national security and the intelligence community, while covering general politics and Congress as well.".
She posted a series of other tweets about it.
"Covering Senate Intel, though, has been crazy and frustrating and a hell of a lot of fun.
I learned a lot.
And since there's heightened interest in this otherwise quiet Hill fixture, here's some random stuff I learned.".
Other tweets:.
"The concept of 'who watches the watchmen' is so important.
SSCI is *the* external oversight check on some of the administration's most secretive programs.
Someone (ie, journalists) needs to make sure they're doing it well.
It's easy to write the 'SSCI is too secret! Closed-door oversight is ironic!' story.
Agreed, great.
Good to recognize & challenge it.
Also important to get over it and figure out how to work around it.
Being outraged will exhaust you and distract you from actually covering it.".
"The interest in SSCI ebbs and flows.
But it should be actively watched, *especially* when nobody seems to care.
That's when it's hard and boring and sometimes days go by without anything happening.
But that's when it's most important.
By 'actively watching,' I don't mean requisite phone calls or big hearings.
Pompeo, Brennan, Comey, Stewart, Clapper, or Rogers show/ed up All.
The. Time. No fanfare. No cameras.
If you're not here in person, you wouldn't know.
It's important to see that and ask questions.".
"Respecting and understanding the system has made me better at covering it.
By and large, I've found SSCI staff to be wicked smart, experienced people who don't want to lose their clearances.
When you make an effort to understand that, it makes you a better reporter (and human).".
"The partisanship of the committee goes in waves.
It's good to keep track of that, communicate it and hold them to account about it.
Politics and intelligence have historically not mixed well.
Neither has its oversight.
On that note, be cognizant when you're reading stuff you suspect is leaking from the Hill, regardless of committee.
Be able to separate politics from the facts.
The number of people fully read into some of this sensitive stuff is infinitesimally small.
Even *MORE* important, I've learned to spot the difference between political reporting about intelligence stuff, and intelligence reporting.
They're both super important.
They're also different.
This is especially important on the Russia story.
SSCI is a repository for almost every secret program and covert action you can imagine (and those you can't).
Russia is far from their only responsibility.
They have to oversee more than 17 (17!) IC components.
There's way more to SSCI than Russia.
That should be covered, too.".
She added, "The CIA once told me I have 'an emotional dependence' on covering SSCI.

All right, on to today's show, which is from a homeowner who wants to fire her house cleaner
and she wants her key back and she doesn't want the house cleaner to steal her stuff
or to go ballistic on her when she fires her.
So she says, how do I fire my house cleaner and have the least amount of collateral damage?
Okay, so this is tough because most house cleaners don't like confrontation and surprise,
surprise, neither do homeowners.
So there's this weird, awkward moment where we hired you in good faith, for some reason
you didn't do a very good job or you were unreliable, or we don't like you for some reason.
I don't know what the reason is that they're firing her, but for some reason they're firing
their house cleaning lady and they want their keys back and they don't want any fallout.
Okay, well this is tough but you're the homeowner.
This is your home.
This is your private domain and you're the king.
And so you get to call all the shots.
You're the one that does the hiring, you're the one that does the firing.
And so in this particular scenario, you have to let this person go.
And I'm trusting you're letting them go for a bad reason, because you don't want any fallout.
If this is somebody that was good to you and you have to let them go because your finances
have changed, you just say, "Oh, golly, something bad happened to our finances and we can't
afford you anymore.
We're so sorry but we have to let you go and thank you so much for your service.
And if our situation ever changes again, we'll hire you back."
That's not what I'm hearing.
What I'm hearing is, how do we fire you without you becoming hostile to us.
So that's a fear, right up front, because the person that cleans your house does have
access to your house and they have access to your key.
And they could do all kinds of damage on the way out the door.
But as a homeowner what you need to realize is this, the person that is cleaning your
house, whatever went wrong, first of all I'm sorry about that.
Whatever went wrong, they still have a business to run.
And they are hoping that as you fire them that you do not leave a bad rating and review for them.
They are just as worried about their reputation as you are about your property.
And so what you need to do is go into this realizing, I am in control of this situation.
This is my home.
I made a decision for my home and the best interest of my family and my home and I'm
sorry but it doesn't include you anymore.
It's a matter-of-fact thing.
Don't worry about hurting their feelings and don't worry about them becoming hostile.
What you may want to do is be as polite as possible.
Don't lie.
Don't tell them that you got fired from your job.
Don't tell them that something magical happened that didn't happen.
Don't make excuses.
Just come right out and say, hey listen.
We hired you and this was what we were hoping for.
And this is an opportunity as a homeowner for you
to really share with them where they screwed up.
Because if you do it in a nice, loving constructive criticism type of way, it might change a couple
of things within their company so that they can go on and they can better themselves.
Now they're losing you as a customer so they've got nothing to lose
by you sharing this conversation with them.
And I recommend that you do and do it honestly.
Say, hey listen, we've noticed over the last several times that you've cleaned that there
are certain rooms of the house that have been skipped altogether.
And that's really disappointing to us because that was part of our original agreement.
And instead of us pursing this agreement and just hoping that it's going to get better,
we've decided to move on.
And so we need our key back and this will be our last cleaning today so I just want
to thank you for your service.
You might even consider giving them a, not a severance package, but a good-bye.
Like, here's an extra 50 bucks or something.
We really appreciate the service that you have provided for us.
It's going to soften everything.
It's going to let them know, hey, they screwed up.
Hey, they can do a better job.
I mean it costs a lot of money to gain a new customer.
All the time and the investment that they have in your house and the time that they
spent getting to know you and your family and your animals and doing the walkthrough
and all this stuff.
And now they're going to leave and they have to go replace you.
And so you might just say, hey there are six things that we wish were different.
And I wanted to share those with you on the way out the door so that you can fix these
six things with future customers that you have.
And if you're a grown-up and you have eye contact, and you're able to present your ideas
in a clear manner, that person can take the information and they're going to go away and
say, man, I just got fired from a job.
I can't believe this happened to me.
And they said there were six things I screwed up on.
And it might totally wreck their day.
But the next day they're going to wake up and say, wow, I've got six things I need to
work on so I don't lose the rest of my customers.
And then it's going to change the way that they focus their energy on their future business.
Now as a business owner, I didn't start out perfect.
I'm not perfect now.
I still make a lot of mistakes and the mistakes I make I don't know that I'm making them while
I'm making them, right?
We learn as we go.
And people are like, man I wish you didn't do that.
And you're like, oh, is that bad?
Yeah, that's bad.
Don't do that again.
You're like, oh, okay.
Won't do that again.
And then you make notes and you make progress and you move on.
So, yeah, we've all had bumps in the road.
We've all been fired from jobs.
I've been fired from jobs for a variety of different reasons.
Some were valid, some weren't.
But on my way out the door, I wanted to make sure that I didn't burn any bridges.
And you want to do the same.
You never know when you're going to want to hire that some house cleaner back.
Or you may never know that you have a house cleaner down the road who calls you and says,
hey listen, I'm getting ready to work for so-and-so.
I know she used to clean your house.
Can you give me a recommendation?
And you can say, well we ended up firing her for six reasons that we understood she fixed
and went on and we've heard great reviews from the neighbors ever since.
You might be able to give them a recommendation later on.
I don't know.
But my suggestion is leave as peacefully as possible, do request the key back at the end
of the day, don't suspect that anything weird is going to happen because for the most part,
house cleaners are good people and they're trying to protect their reputation just like
you're trying to protect your property.
And so, make it very clear, I'm not going to leave you any bad ratings and reviews.
I just want to make sure that you know that these six things cost you this job and I'd
hate for you to lose other jobs in the future for the same six careless moves.
And if you do it with love and kindness and compassion, they're going to learn from that
experience and they'll move on.
All right, so that is how you fire your house cleaner.
You do it in a very loving and kind way and you do it immediately.
Don't stretch it out.
Don't keep hoping things are going to get better because they don't.
I talk to house cleaners every single day that got fired and they have no idea why.
And I talk to homeowners every day and they fire house cleaners and they never tell them why.
And I sit here going, y'all are not helping each other at all.
I mean, this is a business, right?
It's a business transaction.
You give somebody money in exchange for a service.
You have a right to say, hey, this wasn't up to my standard of excellence.
Tell them why.
And as a business owner, they have a right to know.
They need to have that feedback.
All right, that's my two cents for today.
All y'all get together, patch it up, share your ideas, have a real grown-up conversation,
and get it out in the open.
Because that way, everybody wins and when you go to hire the next house cleaner, you're
going to be in a whole different position because you're going to cover those six things up front.
You're going to say, hey, here's what I expect from my house cleaner.
And they'll say, oh, wow, I guess I can do that.
And they'll fix those things that you didn't like about the last person.
But do it in a way that's positive and uplifting and encouraging.
All right, until we meet again,
leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.

UPDATE: Kanye West and Kid Cudi's "Kids See Ghosts" Livestream Hit With Delays - Duration: 2:12.
Kanye West & Kid Cudi's "Kids See Ghosts" Livestream Hit With Delays
UPDATE: After repeatedly pushing back the start time, Kanye West and Kid Cudi's Kids
See Ghosts listening party has been delayed.
The WAV app's stream for the event has gone taken down and currently shows an error message.
A collection of journalists and insiders have been bused to an undisclosed location in the
Los Angeles area, with footage surfacing on social media.
Kanye and Cudi are holding the Kids See Ghost listening in an actual ghost town.
It looks like the WAV app is becoming the destination for Kanye West album rollouts.
Much like last week's release of ye, the G.O.O.D.
Music founder and Kid Cudi will be streaming a listening party for their collaborative
project Kids See Ghosts on the app.
This event is being held in Los Angeles as opposed to Wyoming, which played host to the
ye listening party.
The disorganized nature of the proceedings in Wyoming led to its host venue, Diamond
Ranch, instituting a no rappers policy in the aftermath.
West and Cudi's listening party was first announced by the latter's manager, Dennis
Cummings, on Tuesday (June 5).
Cummings only revealed the location on Twitter, promising more details would come soon.
Cudi unveiled the news of the livestream on Thursday (June 7).
Kids See Ghosts is the third of five albums that West announced in April.
Pusha T's DAYTONA kicked off the release schedule on May 25.
Projects from Nas and Teyana Taylor will complete the collection later this month.
The listening party didn't start at 11 p.m. Eastern as originally planned.
The stream has been pushed back multiple times.
