The mission to create a searchable database of Earth's surface | Will Marshall - Duration: 6:14.

Four years ago, here at TED,

I announced Planet's Mission 1:

to launch a fleet of satellites

that would image the entire Earth, every day,

and to democratize access to it.

The problem we were trying to solve was simple.

Satellite imagery you find online is old, typically years old,

yet human activity was happening on days and weeks and months,

and you can't fix what you can't see.

We wanted to give people the tools to see that change and take action.

The beautiful Blue Marble image, taken by the Apollo 17 astronauts in 1972

had helped humanity become aware that we're on a fragile planet.

And we wanted to take it to the next level,

to give people the tools to take action, to take care of it.

Well, after many Apollo projects of our own,

launching the largest fleet of satellites in human history,

we have reached our target.

Today, Planet images the entire Earth, every single day.

Mission accomplished.

(Applause)

Thank you.

It's taken 21 rocket launches --

this animation makes it look really simple -- it was not.

And we now have over 200 satellites in orbit,

downlinking their data to 31 ground stations we built around the planet.

In total, we get 1.5 million 29-megapixel images of the Earth down each day.

And on any one location of the Earth's surface,

we now have on average more than 500 images.

A deep stack of data, documenting immense change.

And lots of people are using this imagery.

Agricultural companies are using it to improve farmers' crop yields.

Consumer-mapping companies are using it to improve the maps you find online.

Governments are using it for border security

or helping with disaster response after floods and fires and earthquakes.

And lots of NGOs are using it.

So, for tracking and stopping deforestation.

Or helping to find the refugees fleeing Myanmar.

Or to track all the activities in the ongoing crisis in Syria,

holding all sides accountable.

And today, I'm pleased to announce Planet stories.

Anyone can go online to planet.com

open an account and see all of our imagery online.

It's a bit like Google Earth, except it's up-to-date imagery,

and you can see back through time.

You can compare any two days

and see the dramatic changes that happen around our planet.

Or you can create a time lapse through the 500 images that we have

and see that change dramatically over time.

And you can share these over social media.

It's pretty cool.

(Applause)

Thank you.

We initially created this tool for news journalists,

who wanted to get unbiased information about world events.

But now we've opened it up for anyone to use,

for nonprofit or personal uses.

And we hope it will give people the tools to find and see the changes on the planet

and take action.

OK, so humanity now has this database of information about the planet,

changing over time.

What's our next mission, what's Mission 2?

In short, it's space plus AI.

What we're doing with artificial intelligence

is finding the objects in all the satellite images.

The same AI tools that are used to find cats in videos online

can also be used to find information on our pictures.

So, imagine if you can say, this is a ship, this is a tree,

this is a car, this is a road, this is a building, this is a truck.

And if you could do that for all of the millions of images

coming down per day,

then you basically create a database

of all the sizable objects on the planet, every day.

And that database is searchable.

So that's exactly what we're doing.

Here's a prototype, working on our API.

This is Beijing.

So, imagine if we wanted to count the planes in the airport.

We select the airport,

and it finds the planes in today's image,

and finds the planes in the whole stack of images before it,

and then outputs this graph of all the planes in Beijing airport over time.

Of course, you could do this for all the airports around the world.

And let's look here in the port of Vancouver.

So, we would do the same, but this time we would look for vessels.

So, we zoom in on Vancouver, we select the area,

and we search for ships.

And it outputs where all the ships are.

Now, imagine how useful this would be to people in coast guards

who are trying to track and stop illegal fishing.

See, legal fishing vessels

transmit their locations using AIS beacons.

But we frequently find ships that are not doing that.

The pictures don't lie.

And so, coast guards could use that

and go and find those illegal fishing vessels.

And soon we'll add not just ships and planes

but all the other objects,

and we can output data feeds

of those locations of all these objects over time

that can be integrated digitally from people's work flows.

In time, we could get more sophisticated browsers

that people pull in from different sources.

But ultimately, I can imagine us abstracting out the imagery entirely

and just having a queryable interface to the Earth.

Imagine if we could just ask,

"Hey, how many houses are there in Pakistan?

Give me a plot of that versus time."

"How many trees are there in the Amazon

and can you tell me the locations of the trees that have been felled

between this week and last week?"

Wouldn't that be great?

Well, that's what we're trying to go towards,

and we call it "Queryable Earth."

So, Planet's Mission 1 was to image the whole planet every day

and make it accessible.

Planet's Mission 2 is to index all the objects on the planet over time

and make it queryable.

Let me leave you with an analogy.

Google indexed what's on the internet and made it searchable.

Well, we're indexing what's on the Earth and making it searchable.

Thank you very much.

(Applause)

LaLiga Preseason: Athletic Club - Duration: 1:55.

A disappointing season in which they finished fifth from bottom led to Athletic Club ringing the changes.

Taking over at San Mames is Eduardo 'Toto' Berizzo, a coach from the Marcelo Bielsa school of preparing sides.

Bielsa was a legendary coach at the Basque club.

"I coach in my own way. I've absorded a lot about training and playing styles from Marcelo's sides.

But every coach adds their own personality to a method or plan"

In terms of the squad, the main changes come in the defence, with the arrivals of former Eibar full back Ander Capa,

Cristian Ganea and, above all, Yuri Berchiche, the star signing by Los Leones for the new season.

"I will work day after day so that this effort is rewarded. It's tremendously exciting to be here, but there's no pressure."

To give more consistency in the middle of the park, Athletic have also signed Dani Garcia.

As well as cashing in with the sale of Kepa Arrizabalaga, while holding onto the much fancied

Iñaki Williams who will assume more responsibility up front.

There is a renewed optimism at San Mames, with the clear objective of finishing much higher up the table than last season.

Fox Host Asks Rudy Giuliani If He Feels Disoriented - Duration: 4:15.

During an interview this past weekend with Fox News host, Howard Kurtz, Trump attorney,

Rudy Giuliani, actually addressed some of the claims that he's not mentally well that

have actually been made by other current and former conservatives.

Take a look at this exchange and see how Rudy Giuliani immediately adapts his performance

so that he doesn't come off as crazy.

Here it is.

Now, you get personally hammered a lot in your very public role here.

And, particularly on MSNBC.

So, for example, just to give you a chance to respond, Nicole Wallace, former Bush White

House official said, 'Oh, my God.

Rudy needs to check his carbon monoxide monitors.'

And, Joe Scarborough, one time republican congressman said in while criticizing some

of your comments, 'His eyes are bulging while he's talking and he looks disoriented.'

Do you feel disoriented, Mr. Mayor?

Absolutely.

I'm completely disoriented.

I'm sure it sounds that way.

Is there something wr- ... I mean, doesn't this give you an indication how we have, of

what you cover, of how completely disoriented the press is and how out of control they are.

Not only criticizing the President, but everybody around him.

I don't know, you can disagree with me.

I'm hardly disoriented.

I know where I am.

I know who I am.

I don't even think it's worth commenting except for the fact that aren't they way out of control

with journalists accusing you of some kind of mental illness?

Well, that's in the political coverage of Donald Trump as opposed to the coverage of

the investigation.

Hey, look, a lot of the coverage of President Trump is negative, but Mueller is running

an investigation where there have been indictments and guilty pleas.

So, lemme-

[crosstalk 00:01:43]

Go ahead.

But, it's one thing, it's one thing to do that, it's another thing to say that a person's

disoriented whose not.

It's another thing to say that the ... I mean, they said that about the President, right?

All the time Scarborough's said that.

Scarborough's got some deep animus to the President.

I mean all of MSNBC does.

Okay, again.

Let's start with the fact that Giuliani suddenly, yes, I'm totally disoriented.

He changed his entire demeanor because he understands completely what Joe Scarborough

was talking about that Howard Kurtz brought up.

He knows exactly what he does that comes across as crazy.

But, more importantly, I don't feel like Howard Kurtz was joking around with him there.

That man was stone-faced absolutely asking him, do you feel disoriented?

It wasn't a joke.

He wasn't playing around.

I feel like Howard Kurtz, in that particular clip, was legitimately trying to find out

if there is something wrong with Rudy Giuliani.

Now, maybe I'm wrong about that.

Maybe Howard Kurtz just has a very dry sense of humor, but based on what we've seen from

him over the past few years, I don't think that's the case at all.

Rudy Giuliani is trying to be all defensive now saying, look at what they do, they attack,

they attack me, they attack Trump, the attack our mental well being because they've got

nothing else.

No, no, no.

We attack your mental well being because you're not the same human being that you were just

few years ago.

We can actually go back.

I don't know if you understand that the internet exists, but it does.

We can go back and watch how you performed during interviews four years ago, ten years

ago and compare them to the day, back to today, excuse me.

You're not the same person.

Something has changed.

Something is different.

You ... Every time you go out there and do an interview you say something stupid or crazy

and on multiple different occasions you have actually implicated your client, Donald Trump,

into further potentially criminal activity.

So, I think it's well within reason to question whether or not you are disoriented or mentally

even capable of being a lawyer any more.

Because based on the interviews and other media appearances you've had for the last

six month, I think anybody watching those knows that clearly something isn't quite right

in Rudy Giuliani's brain.

Lush How It's Made: Turtle Immersion Jelly Bomb - Duration: 1:52.

- Launched at the Lush Summit of 2018, the,

I just wanna keep saying jelly.

I know, I'm not ready for this jelly.

(bright music)

Shawn here, and today we're gonna be making

the Turtle Immersion Jelly Bomb.

Compounding will be Guen.

Launched at the Lush Summit of 2018,

the Turtle Immersion Jelly Bomb has a mix

of refreshing pine absolute and a grounding blend

of cypress and sandalwood oils.

The sad fact is that many sea turtles are killed

each year due to plastic debris in our oceans.

They eat small bits of plastic

that get caught in the seaweed,

or plastic bags, mistaking them as jellyfish.

This jelly bomb comes in two sizes, and today,

Guen will be making the bigger buddy Turtle Immersion.

Oh, it's big.

First, Guen will create the mix for the center insert.

She mixes in hand-harvested sea salt

and agar-agar jelly strands

with the sodium bicarbonate

before adding in the oils

that give this larger-than-life jelly bomb

its uplifting scent.

Next up, she makes the mixes

for the distinctive blue shell

and the green body of our turtle.

To the green mix, Guen adds in tons of sodium alginate,

which is derived from seaweed.

Aside from making your bath satisfyingly squishy,

this jelly is also beautifully softening

and soothing on the skin.

Satisfyingly squishy.

This jelly (laughs).

Would you like me to deliver it like that as well?

Once Guen has put in some heavy lifting,

the mixes are ready to go to our production assistants

to be molded and pressed.

- That's how we make Turtle Jelly Bombs.

- If you liked this video

to tell us what you wanna see next.

Thanks for watching and we'll see you next time.

If you'd like to see more,

And that way we know which secrets you wanna know, eh?

And we make some notes.

Thanks for watching.

See you next time.

Methods of Solving Quadratic Equations - Duration: 6:18.

Hello!

Before starting today's topic, I'd like to give a quick overview of the last movie.

We defined a quadratic equation, discussed some of the fundamentals and solved some

basic exercises and also did a fun experiment.

Ok, moving on to today's topic: Methods of solving Quadratic Equations.

(Logo)

A quadratic equation can be solved by using various methods,

but three of them are most widely used. They are

Factorization. Completing square

And the quadratic formula which by the way is also referred to as the Shridharacharya's

formula. That is because the formula was given by an Indian mathematician Shridharacharya

around AD 1025. Of course you do not have to remember his name.

Anyway, I'd like to inform you that since I did not want to create an overly lengthy

movie, I have separated each of those methods in separate ones.

So, if you clicked on this video to learn a specific technique I apologize for the inconvenience

and I will link those videos here as soon as I upload them.

So what are we going to do in this very movie?

Well, I have created this one to tackle two of the most fundamental questions that you may have

what is a solution and how to determine if something is definitely the solution.

A solution of a quadratic equation in variable x is a number which when substituted in place

of x, will satisfy the equation.

Now, let's break this down. A solution of a quadratic equation in variable x is a number.

Ok, so it is a number like 1, 0, ½ (one half), 3.5 or root(2). You get the idea.

Alright, so a number which when substituted in place of x, will satisfy the equation. So we have

two things here- substitution and satisfying the equation.

In order to explain these terms, let's consider this quadratic equation:

x squared – 5x – 36 = 0 Now, let's consider a random number –

How about 1. Now, what I am going to do is write 1 in place of x in this equation.

This process of putting a number in place of a variable is called 'substitution'.

That number does not have to be 1, it can be any number.

It could have been 9 and still we'd call it substitution.

Now, let's simplify this part on the left side.

1 squared is 1, negative 5 times 1 is negative 5 and negative 36 remains as is.

1 – 5 – 36 is negative 40. Does that equal to the number that was on the other side of the equation?

No! negative 40 is not equal to 0. Now let's simplify this part on the right side.

9 squared is 81,

negative 5 times 9 is negative 45 and again -36 remains as is.

81 – 45 – 36 is equal to 0.

Here, we got a number that is indeed equal to what was on the other side, right?

So we would say 'x = 9 satisfies the given equation because when we substituted it, Left hand

side was in agreement with the Right hand side'. On the other hand, 'x = 1 does

not satisfy the given equation because when we substituted it, Left hand side was not

in agreement with the Right hand side. Probably by now, you have a good idea of what substitution

means and what 'satisfying the equation' means.

Again, in plain words, substitution is the process of placing a number in place of a

variable and a satisfied equation is one in which upon substitution, LHS is equal to RHS.

Now, believe it or not, in the process of answering the first question what is a solution;

we have actually also answered the second question – How to determine if a number

is definitely the solution. The answer is - If a number satisfies the equation then

it is definitely a solution. Since 1 did not satisfy this quadratic equation, we can say

that 1 is not its solution. On the other hand, 9 satisfied the quadratic equation – therefore,

9 is a solution of this quadratic equation.

Now you may have noticed that I am saying 9 is 'a' solution and not 'the' solution. That

is because quadratic equations have two solutions. In a future movie, I will try to explain why

is it that quadratic equations have two solutions. But for now, I want you to remember that every

quadratic equation has two solutions - which means there is another number that satisfies

this equation. That number is

(Countdown)

negative 4.

If you tried finding it you may have noticed something. Also, if you did not try it then I want you

to notice something. That something is the fact that this process of finding solutions

can get really lengthy and exhausting. Just imagine if that number instead of being negative

4 were something like negative 4.141592, then you may have to arguably spend your entire

life trying to find it using our method of random substitution. And that would be quite

unfortunate. That is why we have sophisticated methods like factorization and the quadratic

formula.

In the next movie, we'll be exploring the factorization method.

And just in case if you want to taste the agonizing pain of finding the solutions using

this method then I dare you to solve this problem.

2x squared + x – 12246 = 0 Answer is in the video description
