My next guest has been making a lot of noise
all the way from Durban, South Africa,
to right here in the United States
and abroad as the voice
of the "now" generation, that's what I call them.
He recently released his highly anticipated
sophomore album, "Strings and Bling,"
which landed at number one on iTunes
and number two on Apple Music.
And because he's all about this business,
this year he was named one of "Forbes Africa"
Under 30,
please welcome one of the coolest kids
on the planet and also from Africa,
the one and only Nasty C to the show!
(cheering and applause)
What's up, man?
I'm great, man. How are you?
How you doing, man?
I'm good, man.
What did it feel, all that, you know,
"Forbes" magazine and all of that?
It was amazing.
Yeah, man.
Hard work's paying off.
It all paid off.
Yes.
But you do a lot of things--
'cause I follow Nasty C on social media--
you do a lot of things to engage your fans.
Yeah.
And one of the things you do
is you tweeted out your cell phone number
for people to reach you directly, right?
My whatsapp.
Yeah, right?
And then fans start hitting you.
So how-- how effective was that?
How well did that work?
Very effective.
Uh-huh.
I even use it, um, I had a listing session
the night before I dropped the album.
Uh-huh.
So I called up my fans directly.
You just called your fans directly?
Right there, yeah.
From Africa or fans from all over the world?
From, from, from Joburg.
I was in Joburg at the time.
Okay, okay.
Joburg, meaning Johannesburg,
for those of you who don't travel like me.
All right, uh, now but where were you born at?
Soweto, right?
Yeah, I just found out.
My pop said this like so casually
in an interview that I did with him
a couple weeks ago at home.
Uh-huh.
He was like, no, he was born
in Diphlu from Joburg.
And I was like, what the...?
You didn't even know?
I had no idea.
So then your entire life,
where did you think you were born?
I thought I was born in Durban.
But you weren't.
I wasn't.
Dude, do you even know who you are?
I'm not even sure right now.
(both laughing)
I might be adopted.
Okay, uh, now one of the things
that you should know about him,
you're considered one of Africa's best rappers,
but I don't even like to regionalize things.
I think you're just a great rapper altogether.
Thank you.
But being from Africa,
how did that influence the music you make?
Um, culture-wise, you know.
Yeah.
The way-- the way we dress,
um, type of stuff that I also speak about
like the jollof.
Mm-hmm.
The catchphrases that we use in our townships,
that type of stuff.
Mm-hmm.
What kinda black-- what's some, some,
some, um, some slang expressions
that you could just share with the TRL audience?
Oh, you need, uh, "gafeewa."
"Get feel"?
"Gafeewa."
"Gafeewa."
Yeah, say gafeewa.
Gafeewa.
Yeah.
What does it mean?
That means it's lit.
It's almost like "it's lit."
Oh, it's lit.
Okay, gafeewa.
Gafeewa.
I'm saying that right?
Yeah, gafeewa.
Gafeewa.
(laughing)
Okay, am I saying it right?
Yeah, you saying it.
Yeah, gafeewa.
We gonna gafeewa today, ladies and gentlemen,
right here with Nasty C, all right?
