-Matthew McConaughey!

His new movie, "White Boy Rick,"

is in theaters everywhere this Friday.

"White Boy Rick" -- this is a true story.

-Based on a true story. Yes, sir.

-And explain what the story is, 'cause this is a young --

-Early '80s. -Yeah.

-Southeast Detroit.

Young man, Rick Wershe Jr., 14.

Began dealing on the streets.

FBI comes to him and says, "Want you to be an informant."

He says, "No, I'm not gonna be an informant."

They said, "Yeah, you are gonna be an informant,

because we got two bodies

that we traced back to guns that your dad was selling."

So he says, "Yes, I will be an informant."

[ Laughter ]

The state busted him dealing.

The state of Michigan just passed a 650-gram law.

If you're caught with more than 650 grams of any type of drug,

you are sent away for life in prison.

At 17 years old, he got busted and went away for life.

Uh, the FBI could not confirm nor deny

that he was an informant.

He just got his first parole after 27 years,

about six months ago.

And he's my age, 48. -Wow.

-That's our story. -Yeah!

-That's our story, and it's a heck of a story.

At the base of it, it's a real story

about a family trying to stay together through all that.

-Well, 'cause the dad is -- He deals guns, right?

-The dad's not your --

He's not your prototype parent, by any means.

That's who I play. -It's not "Leave It to Beaver."

-No, no, no, no, no.

And I'm peddling guns on the streets.

And have my son going out and helping them sell them and such.

But it's a story for me, as the father.

I've played single-parent homes,

fathers that want to be best friends with their kids,

which that isn't usually the recipe for good parenting.

And I play a guy who just couldn't toe the line --

as a parent, anyway. -Wow.

And who is the kid. I didn't recognize him.

-Richie Merritt. Check this out.

Richie Merritt -- we're looking for this role,

and it is a plum role.

Actors from 12 to 18 all wanted this role of White Boy Rick.

The director, Yann Demange, after two years,

hadn't quite found the right kid.

Well, what happened --

in a principal's office in a Baltimore high school,

on a street-casting session,

we go in and the casting director

pitches the part to the principal.

The principal says, "Oh, that's the little...

you ought to start with, right there."

[ Laughter ]

And this young boy, 15,

who understood life on the street,

comes in and gets the role.

And he's the lead in our film,

and he does a beautiful job, man.

He was able to behave naturally in front of the camera.

-Wow. -And yeah.

And have never -- And I'm talking about

this was his first job this kid's ever had.

-Wow! -Right?

Not only that, they say, "You're gonna be working

with Matthew McConaughey as your dad."

And he's like, "Cool. Who's that?"

Didn't know who I was.

We met at a bowling alley, in our first meeting.

And I was standing at the front.

And he would have walked right past me

if I wouldn't have seen a picture of him

and said, "Richie Merritt?"

He said, "Yeah." I said, "McConaughey."

He said, "Cool." [ Laughter ]

-He lucked out because he got a cool guy to hang out with

and show him the ropes. -It was a great experience, man.

-It must be fun to see somebody with a fresh face, too,

and to come into this film set

and be like, "Wow. This is all wonderment."

-Well, he had the respect

and understood the blessings of what he had

and the position he was in.

But at the same time,

he didn't have too much reverence

for what it was he was doing.

Meaning, there was a 20% chance,

every night after work, I thought

he might catch a bus back to Baltimore

and say, "'F' you, guys. I'm tired of these hours."

-Really? -Which was perfect for the role,

'cause you needed a young man with that kind of edge,

that really didn't give an S-H-[Bleep], you know?

You know, enough of that.

And he stuck with it.

He didn't catch that bus back to Baltimore.

Richie, we would have come and got you anyway.

-Ah. [ Laughter ]

-And he does a wonderful job.

And he's a great young man with a great heart.

-Isn't it great to hear stories like that

and give the kid a break like that?

Does he get to talk at all to the real...

-He's talked to him many times. He hasn't met him.

I've met the real Rick Wershe Jr.

Richie has just talked to him on the phone quite a bit.

-Wow. Man, oh, man.

We have a clip. Here's Matthew McConaughey

trying to keep his family together

in "White Boy Rick."

Check this out.

-[ Shouting indistinctly ]

-Get back. -Get off of me!

-Get back in the house, Dawn.

Go in the house and get dressed. -No! Stop!

-Get inside now, huh? -Stop!

-Stop. No.

No.

[ Engine revs ]

-Stop!

[ Breathing heavily ]

-Aw...

Keep going. I got it under control.

You don't need to stop the car, Pop.

Everything's fine. Don't get out of the car.

-Everything is not fine!

A man just ran out of your house,

almost dents my Imperial!

You don't have a...thing under control!

-I hate you!

-You gonna let her talk to you like that?

-Pop, go in the...damn house!

I got this under control, all right?!

-It ain't under control. -Ray, stay out of it.

Looks like Richard's having a bad day.

-No, Ma, I'm not having a bad day.

-My son and I walked into the lion's den,

and this one walked out with the Golden Fleece!

Ain't that right, Ricky?! -That's right.

-That's right! -You're pathetic, both of you!

-And put some clothes on, will ya?

We're going for custard!

-[ Laughs ] [ Cheers and applause ]

"We're going for custard!"

You look buff.

My shirt's just small.

Oh ok.

I'm trying to figure out where to start.

Honestly the only reason why I really asked you here

is just to give my piece.

Cause I know I've talked about (bleep),

not to say that you weren't talking (bleep) too.

So that's why it led to that but,

I didn't have to go where I went.

I thought you had (bleep) us over.

So I said (bleep) you and we started Loyal Ink.

When I left, it's like hey man,

I didn't (bleep) leave you to be stranded,

I just at that point didn't have nowhere for you to go right

then and there.

Me leaving the old shop wasn't me saying forget everybody.

I still had love for it and I still wanted to work

with a lot of people there.

It was never (bleep) Lily.

I wasn't trying to abandon you.

I wasn't trying to leave you out,

I know, but it felt like that. I get it.

... And I understand that at the moment,

I didn't want to speak to you either

and I didn't want to hear anything that you had to say.

I've never disrespected you

or try to say some other (bleep) at all.

The farthest thing from (bleep) up I said, I said (bleep) Ryan.

Because you got up and you left and you didn't say (bleep).

Whatever happened happened,

a mother (bleep) gotta deal with it.

You was riding with a bunch of mother (bleep)

who was putting (bleep) in your ear that made you,

as a strong person you was, go dead against me.

It was like man,

Lily didn't have to go against me like that man.

Cause you had mother (bleep) you, like hey man,

Ryan gonna (bleep) you (bleep) up so then (bleep) him.

I was just such a (bleep) hot head.

I feel stupid at the fact that I was defending people

that I wanted to see good in them.

Right now they're just filled with ego.

I can't work with people like that period, so I removed myself.

So you, you're not (bleep) with them over there no more?

Nmm mm. (Bleep) no.

No, they, they hate me right now.

Everybody?

Yup. I'm the new you. Everybody hates me.

I'm tired of Van's (bleep),

I'm tired of Charmaine's (bleep),

I'm tired of (bleep) Danielle (bleep).

I saw their true colors.

I'll be damned if I turn into how they are.

Anna Kendrick Is a Sloppy Day Drinker - Duration: 4:32.

-A lot of day drinking in this film.

A lot of Martini drinking in the day.

Are you an effective day drinker in real life?

-No. -Yeah.

-No. No. I'm like --

There's, like, a vampire limit to me.

Like, once the sun is down, I'm okay.

Like, I can have a drink.

I'm kind of a sloppy day drinker.

I'll definitely keep asking if you really like me

or if you're, like, just hanging out to be nice.

-Yeah, that's not a vibe people love when they're drinking,

to make sure -- Constantly being asked,

"Do you actually really like me?"

-No. But, I mean, like, do you?

I had -- I drank a little earlier.

I just -- You know, do you have me on, like,

for real 'cause you like me?

-We really like you. -Great. Cool.

-Because of "Pitch Perfect," I have heard that people

sometimes want to showcase their musical talents to you.

-That's true. Yeah. -Does that get frustrating?

Is that a little oppressive?

-Well, sometimes, it's cool, and, you know,

people want to talk to me about, like, being in choir,

which is I think is cool.

Or, sometimes, it's, like, less cool.

Well, on this movie, on the last day of filming --

My driver on this movie was, like, such a nice guy.

and was with me every day.

And he had mentioned that he

liked to dabble with, like, songwriting

and, you know, music production

and messing around with songs and stuff.

And on the last day, he was like,

"Hey, could I play you something?"

And then I was like, "Hell yeah! Let's do it!

Like, crank up the volume. I want to hear it."

He was like, "It's an existing song.

I just did a remix." I was like, "I said, let's go!

Like, let's do it."

And it started and it was

the cup song from "Pitch Perfect"

but, like, a remix.

So, it was like, "When I'm gone."

[ Vocalizes dance music ]

And we're pulling up to set,

and it's blaring the cup song from "Pitch Perfect."

It's blaring.

And I had said, like,

super-enthusiastically that I wanted,

and I didn't want him to feel bad.

So then I had to, like, run out of the car

'cause all my other co-workers

are pulling up as this is blaring.

And I'm like, "Hey, that was the driver.

He just -- Like, he really wanted to show me."

And they were like, "Anna, it's cool, like,

if you like to listen to your own stuff

to get pumped up for the day, like, no judgment."

And I was like, "Very much judgment."

So, I spent the whole rest of the day being like,

"I don't just to listen to the cup song for fun."

-Not even your own version, but that you remix it.

-Yeah. I didn't remix -- Just to have the nightclub vibe.

-Your first musical, you were 12 years old.

Is that right? On Broadway? -[ Cheers ]

-Yeah. What just happened?

-There was someone retroactively wanting to give you

huge credit for that accomplishment.

-They sound super-young,

so I don't think you saw me in that show,

but I love the enthusiasm.

-But you were always into musicals.

-Yeah. -Huge Bette Midler fan as a kid?

-Massive Bette Midler fan.

-I bet not a lot of people your age

were huge Bette Midler fans.

-No. Well, I had that CD, "Experience the Divine,"

where she's, like -- You know,

she's doing that thing where she's on the cover

and she's like, "Ahhh,"

'cause she's, like, hitting a great note or whatever.

And I would show it to people and be like,

"This is the greatest CD ever.

You have to listen to this."

And they would be like, "Why is she screaming?"

And I was like, "You don't get it!

Screaming?! Get out of here."

I made a lot of friends as a kid.

Do you like me? -I do like you.

And you completely sold me on Bette Midler.

-Great.

-Did you see Bette Midler in "Hello, Dolly!"?

-No, I didn't. Do you just want to rub it in?

-I do.

It was really -- Well, now I won't tell you what it is,

'cause I don't want you to feel bad.

[ Whispering ] It was amazing.

Do you have any onset rituals when you do your films?

Is there anything you do to get yourself ready?

-Yeah. I get -- This is kind of weird.

I, like, will have something,

like a lotion or a perfume or something that smells nice.

And, you know, like, scent is tied to memory,

so I'll just use it just during that film,

and then I, like, keep a bottle of it forever.

So if I'm ever like,

"Aww, 'A Simple Favor' was really fun,"

and I, like, pull out that bottle of perfume.

It sounds like real serial-killer behavior.

-It does.

You're like, "Would you like to smell my films?"

-That's exactly how I say it. -That's great.

That, by the way, is like 10 times weirder

than you listening to the cup song.

I hope -- Next time you're here,

we're gonna get you a bottle of perfume

so you can remember each time you're on the show.

-Smell Seth Meyers? -Yeah, that would be lovely.

Thanks so much for being here.

It's always such a pleasure to see you, Anna.

-Our first guest tonight

is an Academy Award and Tony-nominated actress

you know from such films as "Up in the Air"

and the "Pitch Perfect" franchise.

She stars alongside Blake Lively

in "A Simple Favor," which is in theaters Friday.

Let's take a look.

-Hi. Hi. -Hey. Hey.

-Uh, I just left something here, so I was just --

I had a key, 'cause earlier Sean gave me a key.

-You're not under arrest, Ms. Smothers.

FYI.

-I know I'm not. -All right. No, no.

-No, you're very funny. -Yeah, yeah, yeah.

-Um, Sean's not here right now.

-You know, I was actually hoping to speak to you.

-Oh. -Yeah.

I went by your house and then I went by the school.

And then one of the moms thought you might be here.

-Did they? Okay. Well, that's -- Was it Stacy?

-Please welcome back to the show Anna Kendrick, everyone.

♪♪

♪♪

I am delighted to see you again.

-I'm so happy to be here.

-I am very excited to talk to you about this film.

But I feel as though this is probably, for you,

a very difficult film to talk about

because there are many twists and turns.

-There are so many.

It's difficult to talk about, like, anything

beyond the first 20 minutes.

Basically it's these two women, myself and Blake Lively.

We've become friends, even though we're kind of opposites.

And then she goes missing.

And I kind of find out

that there's more to her than meets the eye.

And that's all I can really say.

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

-So it's very difficult to market.

But it's fun, because it's --

Also, the tone of it is so light, it's like a very --

It's a mystery, but it's a very fun kind of movie.

So it's like "Sex and the City" but if Samantha went missing.

But it's not like, "Oh, my gosh, where's Samantha?"

It's like, "But for real, where's Samantha?"

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

No, there's -- The tone is very deftly handled by Paul Feig,

because there are moments of real lightness.

And then there are actual stakes.

-Yes. That's what we're going for.

-Well, good. I was right there with you the whole time.

-Thanks. -You're welcome.

You play -- Your character is a mom blogger.

-Yes. Yeah.

I had ne-- I think I've played, like, pregnant before.

But I hadn't had to deal with kids before, quite as much.

They're great. They're crazy. [ Laughter ]

-You've actually been fairly honest in the past

about how you don't have a natural chemistry with children.

-No, no. [ Laughter ]

No, they could be watching, though.

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

-No, they're -- you know.

But there were gen--

'Cause I'm not a mom. I don't know these things.

And I'm kind of like whatever about kids.

So there would be times like,

we would be doing the blocking for a scene,

and at the end of the scene, we get in the car.

And I was like -- well, at a certain point, you know,

they're like 6 years old or 5 years old or something.

I don't know. [ Laughter ]

And I'm like, "I mean, you know, Josh can probably --

I can just send him to the car ahead of me and he can hang out

and wait in the car."

And everyone on set was like, "Anna, no.

No, it's a busy parking lot.

And no, he can't just go to the car by himself."

I'm like, "I'd crack a window or something."

[ Laughter ] He'd be fine."

-See, this speaks to your skills as an actor

because you play such a good mother in the film

and you seem like --

-Yeah, I was thinking about dogs.

-You were thinking about dogs.

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

-That's a common mistake. -Yeah.

-Did you watch any YouTube mom videos?

-Oh, yeah.

-Because -- as a vlogger in the film.

-Yeah, so I'm a vlogger in the film.

I went down a real rabbit hole on YouTube,

watching all of these mommy vlogs.

And there were some that were great,

that were, like, really honest.

It's just women like --

you know, they got to walk the dog

and they're putting their kids' lunches together.

And they just throw up their iPhone

and they're just kind of talking about, like,

maybe things that they feel, like, guilty about.

They're being very open and honest and it's really nice.

And then there are the ones that are, like, super overproduced.

And the great thing about them is they're really creepy.

[ Laughter ]

They're like -- They have this perfect lighting and this, like,

background that they've obviously painted

that says "Dream" or whatever.

And they like only ever --

and you never see the kid, and they've got the dead eyes.

And you're like, "Okay, do you have a kid?

Or is it like doll that you love a lot?"

So we were going --- we kind of go for that vibe in the movie.

-We watched -- my wife and I watched a lot

of breast-feeding videos --

-Please go on. [ Laughter ]

-Years before we had children.

[ Laughter ]

No, but it was always the ones that were like a little shaggier

that were really effective.

-And helpful, yeah. -Yeah.

'Cause if you look at one that's poorly produced

that has like, 3 million views, you're like,

"This lady knows what she's talking about."

Because no one is coming here for the glitz and the glamour.

-It's not for the aesthetics. -Yeah, exactly.

Blake Lively is --

-Were there a lot of really glamorous breast-feeding videos?

-You know, my wife did call me out and say,

"These are not breast-feeding videos what you're watching."

-Okay. [ Laughter ]

-Yeah. I tried my best. [ Applause ]

She was like, "This is not..."

Blake Lively -- have you known her for a long time?

-Well, I met her when we were like 19 at a party.

And, you know, I expected her to be mean,

because she's tall and beautiful.

-Yeah. -So, obviously.

She's very nice and very warm.

And then I did a movie with her husband, Ryan,

and got to know her a little bit better there.

And Ryan's, like, very dark and funny.

And then, when I finally worked with her, I was like,

"Oh, she's really dark and funny too, actually,"

so, you know, they're just like just sinfully good together.

We're so happy for them.

-You just defeated Ryan Reynolds --

Was it the Teen Choice Award for Best Twitter Personality?

-Yeah, I know, I know. -Congratulations.

-It's, like, very silly.

But also, like, super serious, 'cause I did beat him.

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

Did you want it? Did you badly want it?

-I did. And I did.

I mean, like, you know,

I did this, like, bit where I was like, "Suck it."

But also like, "Really, you can suck it."

-Yeah. [ Laughter ]

You want to make sure he knows.

-Yeah. No, 'cause when he got on Twitter -- he's so funny.

And when he got on Twitter, I was like, "Oh, that's great.

I'm going to follow him on Twitter."

And I was like, "Oh, he's so funny."

And then was a point where I was like, "He's really funny

on Twitter, which is kind of my thing.

But that's so great." [ Laughter ]

But it's fine. -I'm glad you won.

-But I won, so -- the teens. The youths of America.

-They're the future. -They spoke.

The tastemakers of tomorrow. They love me.

There are no plans for America's top diplomat to visit North Korea anytime soon.

That's coming from State department spokesperson, in a daily briefing.

She also confirmed the U.S. special envoy for North Korea, is not meeting with any of

the regime's officials during his first trip to Asia.

Stephen Biegun left for China and Japan after concluding his three day visit to Seoul today.

why is the grass so green

why does coffee taste so good in the

morning when I just mmm I need some

coffee

why does chocolate taste so great why

why why so we're gonna learn three

common informal ways to ask the question

why these are very natural ways that we

use in everyday conversations with our

friends and it's a bit more interesting

and sometimes there are different

situations

where Y is not enough let's go what for

what for you know I think I might move

the sofa into the other room what do you

think

what for

what for

so what for what's the reason

it's like saying what's the reason but

what's the reason is very formal so we

say what for it's very similar to why

number two how come how come

have you heard this one it's a bit

strange isn't it but it means what's the

reason or why for example I'm not coming

to your party I'm sorry I'm not coming

how come

how come why very informal with your

friends number three why is that why is

that or why is that again

like what's the reason or why

you know I don't really I don't think

it's a good idea to start this new

project at work I think we should wait

what's that why is that

why is that I don't think I really like

John he's not very yeah I don't know I

just I don't think I like John why is

that

why is that what's that reason what's

the reason for that it's very common in

Australia but also England and other

english-speaking places so there we go

three common ways to ask why what for

how come and why is that

very informal questions try them out see

if you can hear them remember to listen

to conversations native English speaker

conversations watch movies and TV shows

and then try to hear these questions

this is where you'll hear this informal

Is Korean peace declaration feasible this year? - Duration: 2:08.

The war that divided Korea in two did not come to an end with a peace treaty,.. it has

been put on hold with an armistice agreement.

Today there are efforts to try and get over that last hurdle.

The most prominent step include what was discussed during the historic meeting between the current

leaders of Seoul and Pyongyang.

According to our Choi Si-young, hopes are high the upcoming summit could produce a peace

declaration.

Will the third inter-Korean summit provide the momentum to formally end the 7-decade-long

Korean War?

At the first summit in April, Seoul and Pyeongyang agreed to declare it over this year.

But Pyeongyang and Washington can't seem to agree on what has to be done first for that

to happen.

Pyeongyang demands that they end the war right away, but Washington insists that North Korea

hand over a list of all its nuclear-related materials first.

South Korea's special envoys, who visited North Korea last week, suggested working simultaneously

toward the end-of-war declaration and the nuclear list.

Kim Jong-un is known to have said he's willing to work more proactively if the two can go

simultaneously but laid out no new measures for denuclearizing.

Kim also said declaring an end to the Korean War would neither weaken the S. Korea-U.S.

alliance nor require the withdrawal of American troops from South Korea.

"At the moment, what Kim Jong-un has described is a trust-building gesture to assure the

U.S. that the declaration won't have a negative impact on the South Korea-U.S. alliance."

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that the declaration would only be a political

affirmation that hostilities between the two Koreas are over.

"The peace declaration could bring about North Korea's denuclearization, a new phase in inter-Korean

relations and a more peaceful Korean Peninsula."

The key would be whether the two Koreas can find a middle ground in their nuclear negotiations

at the summit next week.

That result will be shared by Presidents Moon and Trump at their summit to be held on the

sidelines of the UN General Assembly,... which could kick-start the three countries' move

towards ending the Korean War later this year.

Ten patients tested negative for MERS, gov't keeps close watch to tackle disease - Duration: 1:55.

It's announced 10 people who came into contact with the first MERS patient tested negative

for the virus.

Still, health authorities are monitoring the situation around-the-clock with others still

on the watchlist.

Yoon Jung-min gets us up to speed with the developments.

All ten people who were tested after coming into contact with a man recently diagnosed

with MERS... have been confirmed free of the virus as of Wednesday.

The discharged patients, however, still remain on the quarantine agency's watchlist.

On Tuesday, a passenger from Dubai showed similar symptoms and was quarantined in a

medical center on arrival.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are keeping a close eye on dozens

of others who came into contact with the first patient, including passengers, flight attendants

and medical workers.

Those people have been placed under quarantine at home.

Health authorities were criticized, however, as the original patient was carried to hospital

by an ordinary ambulance rather than the one designed to block air circulation.

The deadly virus easily spreads through the air and patients require a special facility

to prevent contaminated air spreading.

The health authorities earlier said they used the special ambulance, but it was later found

to be false.

The government is tracking those who contacted the first patient, but the whereabouts of

some 30 people still remains unknown.

The Seoul Metropolitan government also launched a task force to tackle the virus ahead of

the country's major Chuseok holiday later this month.

The original patient was diagnosed with MERS and hospitalized on Saturday after he returned

home from a business trip in Kuwait.

Korea was hit hard by an outbreak in 2015, which infected more than 180 people nationwide

and caused 38 deaths.

Inter-Korean joint liaison office to start operations on Friday - Duration: 2:27.

Let's begin with a welcome follow-through on a part of the Panmunjom Declaration signed

by the leaders of the two Koreas in April.

On Friday, at the Kaesong Industrial Complex north of the border, Seoul and Pyeongyang's

joint liaison office will officially be open.

Arirang's unification ministry correspondent Oh Jung-hee has our top story.

A contact office that enables communication between the two Koreas twenty-four-seven,

all year round.

For the first time in history, South and North Korea will be running a joint liaison office

together... and it will be within the Kaesong Industrial Complex, a factory park the two

Koreas ran together until February 2016.

The grand opening will take place on Friday with 50 to 60 attendees from each side of

the border.

South Korea's unification minister Cho Myoung-gyon and his North Korean counterpart, Ri Son-gwon

who heads the North's reunification committee, will be signing and exchanging an agreement

on running the contact office.

"The office will be in charge of overseeing constant contact between the two Koreas, discussions

for inter-Korean talks and providing support for civilian exchanges.

Officials from the land, forest, and culture ministries will also be staying."

Vice ministerial-level officials from the two Koreas will be heading the office.

South Korea will be appointing the vice unification minister Chun Hae-sung as its head... and

North Korea plans to appoint its vice-head of the reunification committee as Chun's counterpart.

They will serve as representatives whenever meetings take place.

15 to 20 officials each from Seoul and Pyeongyang will be at the contact office.

"The joint liaison office will become an ordinary communication channel for improving inter-Korean

relations, lowering military tensions and bringing peace to the Korean Peninsula.

We expect it will contribute to keeping inter-Korean relations stable and helping North Korea-U.S.

nuclear negotiations."

The joint liaison office can serve as the foundation for sustainable and institutionalized

inter-Korean relations.

Seoul says the two Koreas aim to ultimately set up resident representative offices in

each other's capitals.

PM Lee meets Russian President Putin to discuss Seoul-Moscow cooperation - Duration: 1:45.

Seoul's Prime Minister met with President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the economic

forum taking place in Vladivostok.

Among other things, the duo touched on bilateral economic cooperation to boost trade volume

between the two countries.

Cha Sang-mi shares with us what was discussed.

South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon sat down with Russian President Vladimir Putin

on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Fourth Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia.

Prime Minister Lee thanked President Putin for Russia's support towards establishing

permanent peace and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, and said that the South

Korean government was doing its best to implement what was agreed in June, between Presidents

Moon Jae-in and Putin, including the "nine bridges" of cooperation between South Korea

and Russia.

The "nine bridges'" include cooperation in shipbuilding, arctic shipping, seaports, energy

and natural gas, as well as railways, jobs, agriculture and fishing.

President Putin also stressed the importance of bilateral economic and trade cooperation

between Moscow and Seoul, citing the 27 percent increase in trade volume between the two countries

last year, and the 8 percent increase in the first half of this year.

The Russian leader said South Korea is a very important and promising partner for Russia

in the Asia-Pacific region, and that he is satisfied by the developments made between

the two countries.

The South Korean PM also said that President Moon proposed to try to increase the bilateral

trade volume by 50 percent by 2020, which marks the 30th year anniversary of the establishment

of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He also proposed doubling the current amount of people-to-people exchanges between Moscow

and Seoul.

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon further delivered President Moon's words to invite President

Putin to South Korea in the near future.

S. Korean firm's cancer treatment granted orphan drug status in U.S. - Duration: 0:44.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted a South Korean company an orphan drug

designation for a treatment for pancreatic cancer.

The "orphan" designation gives companies benefits for making drugs that are needed but business-wise

aren't economical.

The treatment, called "Immuncell-LC," takes a patient's blood, modifies it genetically

to kill certain cancer cells, and infuses it back into the patient.

Clinical trials by the manufacturer, GC Cell, showed that 10 injections were effective at

a rate of 25 percent.

GC Cell will likely get tax breaks and a seven-year monopoly once the treatment is authorized,

through which the company plans to move into the American market for cancer treatment.

Rift in parliament widens over cost of implementing Panmunjom Declaration - Duration: 1:45.

The government has submitted to parliament a bill to ratify April's inter-Korean summit

agreement.

Already the cost of implementing the deal has become a point of contention.

Shin Se-min has the latest from the National Assembly.

Once next week's summit is over, rival political parties have agreed that they will consider

a bill that would ratify the Panmunjom Declaration.

The unification ministry… had submitted the bill hoping to secure bipartisan support

for the denuclearization drive before the summit, but that's now highly unlikely with

the parties divided over the price tag.

The government estimates the cost of implementing the declaration through next year would be

a total of 417-point-8 million U.S. dollars,… an addition of nearly 265 million to the roughly

152 million already earmarked for next year's inter-Korean cooperation fund.

That money would cover the estimated outlays for joint projects in railways, roads and

forestry as well as other modernization initiatives.

President Moon Jae-in, before the bill was submitted, had urged lawmakers to put aside

party interests and partisan politics... and give their support at this important juncture.

Conservative opposition parties however, are up in arms about the cost figures.

The main opposition Liberty Korea Party and the minor opposition Bareun Mirae Party say

the bill is deceiving the Korean people and that a unilateral demand for ratification

is an affront to the National Assembly.

The ruling party, however, is standing by the government-led initiative calling it the

duty of the parliament to review and affirm the governments' plans.

Shin Se-min, Arirang News.
