-Matthew McConaughey!
His new movie, "White Boy Rick,"
is in theaters everywhere this Friday.
"White Boy Rick" -- this is a true story.
-Based on a true story. Yes, sir.
-And explain what the story is, 'cause this is a young --
-Early '80s. -Yeah.
-Southeast Detroit.
Young man, Rick Wershe Jr., 14.
Began dealing on the streets.
FBI comes to him and says, "Want you to be an informant."
He says, "No, I'm not gonna be an informant."
They said, "Yeah, you are gonna be an informant,
because we got two bodies
that we traced back to guns that your dad was selling."
So he says, "Yes, I will be an informant."
[ Laughter ]
The state busted him dealing.
The state of Michigan just passed a 650-gram law.
If you're caught with more than 650 grams of any type of drug,
you are sent away for life in prison.
At 17 years old, he got busted and went away for life.
Uh, the FBI could not confirm nor deny
that he was an informant.
He just got his first parole after 27 years,
about six months ago.
And he's my age, 48. -Wow.
-That's our story. -Yeah!
-That's our story, and it's a heck of a story.
At the base of it, it's a real story
about a family trying to stay together through all that.
-Well, 'cause the dad is -- He deals guns, right?
-The dad's not your --
He's not your prototype parent, by any means.
That's who I play. -It's not "Leave It to Beaver."
-No, no, no, no, no.
And I'm peddling guns on the streets.
And have my son going out and helping them sell them and such.
But it's a story for me, as the father.
I've played single-parent homes,
fathers that want to be best friends with their kids,
which that isn't usually the recipe for good parenting.
And I play a guy who just couldn't toe the line --
as a parent, anyway. -Wow.
And who is the kid. I didn't recognize him.
-Richie Merritt. Check this out.
Richie Merritt -- we're looking for this role,
and it is a plum role.
Actors from 12 to 18 all wanted this role of White Boy Rick.
The director, Yann Demange, after two years,
hadn't quite found the right kid.
Well, what happened --
in a principal's office in a Baltimore high school,
on a street-casting session,
we go in and the casting director
pitches the part to the principal.
The principal says, "Oh, that's the little...
you ought to start with, right there."
[ Laughter ]
And this young boy, 15,
who understood life on the street,
comes in and gets the role.
And he's the lead in our film,
and he does a beautiful job, man.
He was able to behave naturally in front of the camera.
-Wow. -And yeah.
And have never -- And I'm talking about
this was his first job this kid's ever had.
-Wow! -Right?
Not only that, they say, "You're gonna be working
with Matthew McConaughey as your dad."
And he's like, "Cool. Who's that?"
Didn't know who I was.
We met at a bowling alley, in our first meeting.
And I was standing at the front.
And he would have walked right past me
if I wouldn't have seen a picture of him
and said, "Richie Merritt?"
He said, "Yeah." I said, "McConaughey."
He said, "Cool." [ Laughter ]
-He lucked out because he got a cool guy to hang out with
and show him the ropes. -It was a great experience, man.
-It must be fun to see somebody with a fresh face, too,
and to come into this film set
and be like, "Wow. This is all wonderment."
-Well, he had the respect
and understood the blessings of what he had
and the position he was in.
But at the same time,
he didn't have too much reverence
for what it was he was doing.
Meaning, there was a 20% chance,
every night after work, I thought
he might catch a bus back to Baltimore
and say, "'F' you, guys. I'm tired of these hours."
-Really? -Which was perfect for the role,
'cause you needed a young man with that kind of edge,
that really didn't give an S-H-[Bleep], you know?
You know, enough of that.
And he stuck with it.
He didn't catch that bus back to Baltimore.
Richie, we would have come and got you anyway.
-Ah. [ Laughter ]
-And he does a wonderful job.
And he's a great young man with a great heart.
-Isn't it great to hear stories like that
and give the kid a break like that?
Does he get to talk at all to the real...
-He's talked to him many times. He hasn't met him.
I've met the real Rick Wershe Jr.
Richie has just talked to him on the phone quite a bit.
-Wow. Man, oh, man.
We have a clip. Here's Matthew McConaughey
trying to keep his family together
in "White Boy Rick."
Check this out.
-[ Shouting indistinctly ]
-Get back. -Get off of me!
-Get back in the house, Dawn.
Go in the house and get dressed. -No! Stop!
-Get inside now, huh? -Stop!
-Stop. No.
No.
[ Engine revs ]
-Stop!
[ Breathing heavily ]
-Aw...
Keep going. I got it under control.
You don't need to stop the car, Pop.
Everything's fine. Don't get out of the car.
-Everything is not fine!
A man just ran out of your house,
almost dents my Imperial!
You don't have a...thing under control!
-I hate you!
-You gonna let her talk to you like that?
-Pop, go in the...damn house!
I got this under control, all right?!
-It ain't under control. -Ray, stay out of it.
Looks like Richard's having a bad day.
-No, Ma, I'm not having a bad day.
-My son and I walked into the lion's den,
and this one walked out with the Golden Fleece!
Ain't that right, Ricky?! -That's right.
-That's right! -You're pathetic, both of you!
-And put some clothes on, will ya?
We're going for custard!
-[ Laughs ] [ Cheers and applause ]
"We're going for custard!"
