-"The Boys in the Band."
[ Cheers and applause ] Congrats on this.
At the Booth Theatre. What a cast.
-It's incredible. It really is.
-What is the play about? For anyone that...
-This is the 50th anniversary of a play written 1968.
You can do math. You already knew that.
It's one of the first plays, or any form of entertainment,
that took a real intimate -- fictionalized,
but intimate look inside the lives of gay men.
And they all gather -- They're all gay men
who gather in the apartment of my character
for the party of Zach Quinto's character's birthday party.
And you see how they behave with one another,
and things get a little dark.
But it was just -- It was a real unique --
And, like I say, one of the first intimate looks
inside the lives of gay people back then.
-And, now, how would one get --
Like, so, the play's set basically in an apartment.
Lot of dialogue. -Yeah. Yeah.
-How would one get injured, would you say?
-Curtain call. Curtain call. -What happened?
-I stepped off -- There's a sunken living room.
Not to spoil anything, but there's a sunken living room.
-That's the big -- the twist. -The big reveal. "Ohh!"
And we went out for a curtain call,
and we stand at this pose to bow,
and I was in charge of taking the step down to lead us,
and I literally -- I stepped down, and I went -- THOOM!
And I was down, and I was like --
It didn't hurt, but I was like this.
And my body did this -- I wasn't in pain.
But any time I tried to put my foot down,
it would get yanked back up by my knee.
I'm like -- I hopped down to curtain call,
and I joined -- I'm between -- Who am I between?
Andrew Rannells and Zachary Quinto.
And we went to take a bow, and I looked at Zach and I went,
"I can't do this."
And I hopped back, and I went off stage,
and then we went to the ER, and it was broken.
-You broke your foot?
-I broke my foot. I tore a ligament.
-It didn't change the --
Or did you add that into your character?
-Well, we did --
At first, I was using the boot and the cane,
and then I got to just a boot, and we stored the --
-I heard about the cane, yeah.
-Yes, we stored canes in strategic places
across the theater in case, you know, like I feel unsteady.
I can go to a closet and grab a cane and start --
Which wouldn't be distracting at all, but anyway...
-We thought actually -- 'Cause I heard about this cane story.
-Oh, Jesus.
-And we just thought it'd be really fun...
-Oh, my God!
-This is -- Look. Your name is engraved.
-No!
-"JP." And the date of the play.
-Oh, no!
-The date of the play and "Boys in the Band"
is engraved on the side.
-This is so moving.
-And if you feel like a snack... -Shut your mouth.
No! -Skittles.
-Oh, my God!
-All the Skittles. A rainbow of flavor.
All the Skittles you want for you.
-This is a Broadway miracle. -This is a Broadway miracle.
-Every actor should go with a cane in every part.
-Yes.
Look at that. -I like it.
[ Cheers and applause ]
And you can gesture with it and be like,
"Sit down! Get back in your seat!"
-All right, we got to take the Skittles out for that.
-Oh, yeah. It's like a child's toy now.
[ Skittles rattling ] -It's a rainstick.
[ Laughter ]
Let's talk about "A Kid like Jake."
This film, which was beautifully done.
-Thank you very much.
-Well-acted and -- -They're very good.
-Oh, Skittles -- -Once you taste the rainbow,
it's really hard to continue on.
[ Laughter ]
[ Cheers and applause ]
Aren't they, though? They make you feel good.
-They make you feel good. -God, I love sugar.
-Claire Danes. -Claire Danes.
-Phenomenal. Priyanka Chopra. But this is a tricky subject.
And I thought it was very, very interesting.
Basically, you and Claire have a kid
that's going into kindergarten.
-And you're not sure -- I don't even know how to explain it.
-well, we are -- We're not thinking much of anything
in terms of what the subject of the movie is about as parents.
But when we're applying to these kindergartens
and we want financial aid to help us get to a good school,
we apply for these scholarships.
And Octavia Spencer plays --
-Octavia Spencer, man. -Yeah, she's incredible.
She plays the director of his preschool where he's been,
and she suggests to Claire's character
that we should maybe capitalize on Jake's gender-variant play
and how much he enjoys dressing up as a princess.
And she's like, "You know, he's unique, he's special,
and these schools, they want diversity,
and he's a unique guy, a unique kid."
And it kind of snowballs for us
and makes us for the first time look at our kid and go,
"Well, that was just Jake. That's just who he was."
And now we're kind of looking and going,
"Is there something we need to be doing?
Is there something -- Should we label him?
Is there some step we should take?"
And it kind of snowballs, and it makes us protective.
-Should you label him going into kindergarten?
He doesn't know. He's just being himself.
-He's just being him. -It's beautifully done.
