Hey how's it going everyone, Ti here with another video. I have a couple of other
videos in the works right now including one on a Raspberry Pi full node, I have a
couple of animations in the works, and a video on this guy here. But today I want
to talk about something that's a little bit more pressing and that is social
media. Now if you haven't heard, the big social media companies have basically
lost their fucking minds. They've been banning people left and
right. They've been censoring people who don't conform to that
mainstream, conventional, milquetoast point of view, so as Bitcoiners we tend
to get a little nervous when we hear stuff like that because we usually trend
independent, sometimes confrontational, sometimes trollish, but also, you know
very controversial, unconventional. So what do we do as the Bitcoin community
when faced with things like that? Well we do one of three things. We can build and
I am woefully ill-equipped to build a social network. We can beg and plead with
the powers that be, which is something I'm not willing to do but that's also
just kicking the can down the road. But also find an alternative and I think a
number of us have found that alternative in Mastodon. So Mastodon is a federated
social network where you have private independent servers that are running
Mastodon that are all connected to each other under the greater Mastodon social
network it functions, sort of, exactly, almost, to the tee like Twitter. You toot
instead of tweet but we'll get that later but what this means for the user
is that you as an individual can seek out an instance that has Terms of
Service, rule set, a culture, custom emojis that you find preferable
and you can join that, so that eliminates or rather reduces the risk of you
getting booted getting banned by an authority some admin who doesn't share
your point of view. Obviously you could still get booted but you only get booted
from that instance not from the entire network. So all you need to do is get
your ass in other instance and sign up and you can participate in the network
again. But enough of me talking let's do a little deep dive. This is the Mastodon's
homepage what you want to do here before anything is find an instance to join if
you don't already have one in mind and browse the list here I scroll to the
bottom they're filtered by interest in language if you're a Bitcoin heir
particularly a maximalist enjoying the Bitcoin hackers instance and you can
find the link to that in the video description below once you've chosen an
instance and signed up you'll be greeted to the standard web client interface
which looks a little bizarre if you use Twitter but you'll feel right at home if
you use a tool like TweetDeck column layout shows your default home feed and
your notifications as well as two unique feeds local and federated timelines on
those in a minute your home timeline is almost exactly like Twitter you can
reply you can boost which is essentially retweeting and you can favor it which is
basically the same thing as alike the three menu opens up your extended
options that are also similar to Twitter you can mute block report people as well
as DM mention and a host of other options if you hit the same button on
your own post you can find the delete and pin post options there the
notification column moves fast in real time but it's pretty fun to watch items
cascade and after you post something good now onto the local and federated
timelines the local timeline shows post made by people in your instance even the
ones you don't follow during a high-quality and since this is a good
way to find new and interesting people to follow the Federated timeline draws
and posts from other instances that are connected to yours so as a result this
timeline can be a little interesting ok let's move on to composing your first
toot yes tweets are call toots here and no you
will not get used to this like Twitter you can attach images and mention other
users even on different instances we can also limit your post visibility to just
followers or non-public timelines there's also this interesting content
running option let's see hide parts of your post behind a button click it's
useful for things like movie spoilers pornography or trigger warnings Mastodon
has a number of settings absent from Twitter few examples include a bot
option to indicate they operate a bot account as for metadata options that you
can use for obvious things like links and text but pretty certain there's room
for more esoteric uses and also there's an account redirect option if you decide
to switch handles or instances unfortunately you don't carry your
followers and post with you but it's something at least you like the idea of
Mastodon but can't get past the interface
there's several web clients that let you experience a more Twitter like format
including pinafore and halcion links in the description section as usual on the
mobile front I'm personally an Android user and I've tested two apps
masta lab and tusky I prefer tusky for its polished speed and overall layout
but if you enjoy deep customization masta lab may be for you as you can see
the feature set and functionality doesn't differ a whole lot from Twitter
but honestly that's not the point the point is the platform and the whole
federated system make it so you can't get box out of conversations it makes it
so that you can't be blocked from participating in the network and I think
that's a great thing so hopefully this thing takes off I'll
have links and relevant resources in the description section below and join
Mastodon hope to see you there
you
