A number of people say Google and Facebook

should become public utilities.

But if you think about it, it's actually very difficult

to achieve.

For one thing, you know, to do public deregulation,

you have to regulate the profits.

So you have to measure the costs, measure the revenue.

OK, measure the cost, you know, Google

were just small startup at the start they were financed.

They was probably one out of 10 or one out of 20

to succeed, just like a drug company, a new drug.

And so you have to factor in the probability of success

in there, and we have no clue as to what this probability

of success could be.

And then the revenue, those companies are global.

And of course, what they do is to put their intangibles,

you know, the intellectual, you know, the patents,

or all the data, they put that into some country

where the taxation is low.

And they will do-- they will do the same thing

if we started to regulate them as a public utility.

And not to mention the fact that things move very fast,

which brings me actually to breakers because lots of people

also say you should break up Google and Facebook.

But think about Google, for example.

You know, if you want to break a firm the way we broke up AT&T,

we broke up electricity companies or railroad

companies, depending on the country,

you had to identity an essential facility.

An essential facility is some kind of business segment you

cannot duplicate easily.

So clearly you cannot just duplicate the tracks

and the station in New York, right?

I mean, there's no way a railroad

company can duplicate that.

It's very hard to duplicate a transmission high-power voltage

grid, right?

It's not doable.

So those are kind of natural monopolies

or essential facilities.

For AT&T, it was the local loop, right?

So you take that out, and you prevent

the owner of that essential facility

from reentering the segments.

So it's a line of business restriction.

That's what was done with AT&T, or at least you

make sure there's a level playing

field with the competitors in the competitive segments.

So for that, you need to limit the times, the bundling,

the predation, and so on on the rivals.

Now try to do that with Google.

First, you have to ask yourself, what is the essential facility?

OK, search engine, let's assume it's a search engine.

So you take the search engine and you cut it from--

you cut it from Waze and YouTube and Gmail and whatnot.

Now you ask yourself, will the search engine

work as well without Waze, Gmail, YouTube, and so on?

Not quite because, of course, they

use lots of data from your personal profile,

right, to guide you to other things

that you might want to buy or to look at.

So the data are common input to all those services

so it becomes harder actually to break up things.

Not to mention the fact that the technology

is changing very fast.

And railroads-- I hope nobody is working

on railroads or electricity or even telecoms

in the '80s.

I mean, those were technologies which had been there

for a century, right?

So you cut them into pieces, that's fine.

But you know, if you start thinking about the internet,

things change pretty fast, right?

LaLiga Preseason 2018/2019: Levante UD - Duration: 1:42.

Levante UD are a clear example of the expression "it's not how you start, but rather how you finish."

The final run-in for the Valencian club was so spectacular

that they defied the odds and achieved safety

as well as becoming the only side to beat champions Barça all season in LaLiga.

Everything changed when Paco López was put in charge

Now he begins a new season at the club,

and he has brought in a player he knows from his time at Villarreal B: Aitor Fernandez.

"It's very exciting for me to be here, at Levante.

They were the club that were committed to me throughout,

and I'm sure Paco also put in a good word for me

and helped a lot with them signing me."

Los Granotas continue counting on key players such as Morales, Coke, Rochina, Rober Pier and Cabaco,

and have also signed Ghanaian Raphael Dwamena, Bosnian Sanjin Prcic, and Nigerian Moses Simon.

The objective is clear:

keep following the path established last season and stay up in LaLiga Santander.

Elbphilharmonie | Pierre-Laurent Aimard - Duration: 2:32.

I'm really looking forward to playing Charles Ives's monumental second piano sonata »Concord«

at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg as part of the [upcoming season's] focus on Ives.

This piece is a source of fascination for me for several reasons:

Ives was determined not to pursue a classic career in composing,

a decision with which he clearly dissociated himself from the American academic tradition.

He always found a way to compose using big, fresh and inspiring ideas,

and he did so in a completely independent, personal and original fashion.

Where the Ligeti sonatas are concerned, I almost feel like a contemporary witness:

I was close to the composer, and was there when these pieces were written.

I've spent all the years since then trying to understand the style and identity of the music

and trying to work out how a musician or a listener can relate to it.

The Ligeti sonatas have accompanied me for 20 or 30 years, and they have literally flowed into my bloodstream.

There is an increasing number of concert halls nowadays where the artist plays surrounded by the

audience, but the Elbphilharmonie gives especially strong expression to this principle.

For the way the musician perceives the audience and for the contact between audience and artist, I feel this is a great opportunity.

GPS & Property Rights for Poor - Duration: 5:49.

Remote Indian villages that don't even have

electricity or running water are using GPS

technology to fight for

their land ownership rights.

This is a story about the tribal people of

Sagai village located in the

national forests of Gujarat.

Tribals are not part of the mainstream society.

They've been living in the hills, within

the forests for centuries.

For hundreds of years Great Britain ruled

all of India, and any

forests were considered property of the

government- regardless of

whoever was living there.

India gained independence

from the British in 1947,

but the forest lands were

simply taken over by the new government.

Their situation was very bad because they

didn't have any legal means of livelihood.

Whatever they did

to eke out their livelihood, it was

considered as criminal.

They were considered as

thieves in their own land.

Local villagers, desperate

to eke out a living, began

to farm the land illegally, growing food

for their families.

I mean since they had no legal

rights, forest department

officials would try to evict them.

And sometimes used that as an extortion mechanism.

That, you know, unless you pay we are

going to send a bulldozer

or send a tractor to uproot your crops.

Villagers were fearful to

improve their land.

It was too risky to dig wells,

or use a tractor.

If a forest official was abusive or

demanded a bribe, they had

nowhere to turn.

By early 2000, the lives of the

tribal population in most

of India were similar to

the poorest of the poor in India.

We came to a couple

of villages and we saw their plight.

Their situation was just like

near starvation; they couldn't get

two square meals a day.

It was not a good situation.

In 1991, as economic reforms were erupting

across the country, tribal

communities and their advocates began to

organize and speak out

about property rights, laying claim to the lands

on which they were living.

In 2006, the national government passed the

Forest Rights Act, creating a provision for

tribal peoples to gain

legal rights to their traditional lands.

Rama Bhai and his family live

in Sagai village in the

national forests of Gujarat.

Rama is a farmer, and a

tribal leader in his village.

Gradually, everyone heard the news of the

new law which was introduced

that land prior to 2005 may

be allotted by law.

But there was a catch, in

order to gain ownership of

their land, villagers had to

prove that they were farming a specific piece

of land prior to December 31st, 2005.

In situations like these villages, there

is no one who is recording

who's farming when and how.

How would you prove that?

Everyone made a map of their land.

We used thread to mark boundaries

and measure an area to make the maps.

But the hand-drawn maps weren't enough.

The government insisted on an official

paper trail with a history of government-issued

documents proving ownership.

When I applied our application was

declined and we were not

given the title to our land.

Almost everyone was refused.

After a long review, the government only

approved 10% of the applications.

It looked like most villagers were

back where they started.

But then they came up with a new idea.

What if they could use Google Earth

satellite maps to prove

that the villagers were

farming specific plots of land prior to 2006?

So the satellite images on

Google Earth were one

instrument by which we thought "it's possible".

So what happened was that

archival images became available.

So in some places we have

images from 2002 and 2004,

which means that you get a

picture of the history.

So if in 2005, you see this

forest, you know this was a forest.

If it was an open field, you can see

that on the image.

If you see that boundary,

there is no way you can deny

that this plot was being farmed.

And there was no other way to show it in

such a dramatic manner as

the satellite images.
