How do you come up with all these crazy ideas for "Will It?"

and sort of turn it around and just follow that.

-That's what you do. -Yeah.

Start off by putting pine needles in tacos,

and then, the next thing you know,

You have a book. You have things.

because we left the dogs back home.

Barbara and Jade. -This is Barbara.

so we were like, "Yeah, we'll wear them tonight."

because we put them in a daycare,

like, a doggy daycare that has video cameras

so we can spy on them while we're gone.

-And then your wives are best friends.

But now the dogs are now best friends, as well.

But will we be seeing them this season

on "Good Mythical Morning?"

We're always looking for opportunities to exploit

every member of our family.

Well, what do we have to look forward to on Monday?

-Well, on Monday, we're doing "Will It Nacho?"

So that's when we'll get the Long Island iced nachos.

Never done that one. -Yeah, yeah.

-14 seasons in, and we're doing nachos.

So Monday is "Will It Nacho?" -Yep.

I'm going to say a lot of things will nacho.

-Mm-hmm.

-And they have these skywriters, right?

Like, these planes that, you know, have messages.

living in this cottage is like,

"I would really like somebody's name up in the sky.

but I need to also say where this is from,

like, who's, you know, putting this up."

So they're like, "I don't know. Just say 'Cottage by the Sea.'"

So in blue letters...

they did "Debbie Macomber"

and then "Cottage by the Sea" right above the house.

Now, unfortunately the owner of --

-So this is skywriting? -That's skywriting, yes.

I've never seen it in colors.

So that's what the story is about.

I got to be honest, that seems incredibly short...

Spike Lee on the Connection Between Charlottesville and BlacKkKlansman - Duration: 6:49.

-Welcome to the show.

-Glad to be here. Thank you for having me.

-Congratulations on the movie. It's fantastic.

We had a screening with our staff. We were blown away.

One thing I remember when the trailer first came out,

it really hammered home this is based on a true story.

Because, otherwise, you would think it is fiction

that there was this black police officer

who pretended to be in the Klan.

Or pretended to be white. He was in the Klan.

-Yeah, that's what I felt

when Jordan Peele, you know, pitched it to me.

It was one of those very high-concept pitches.

Six words. "Black man infiltrates KKK."

Ku Klux Klan.

-And Jordan Peele, of course -- -"Get Out" fame.

-Yeah, "Get Out" fame. Also a very funny comedian.

Did you think he was pitching you a piece of sketch comedy

when you first heard this?

-No, I thought -- I thought of --

Unless you call the Dave Chappelle thing a sketch.

-I do -- Yeah. -I thought of Dave Chappelle.

And -- But he said, "No, it's a true story."

He sent me the book. I was very intrigued by it.

And I felt that this is something

that was in my wheelhouse, and do a, you know,

an Aaron Judge blast to left field at Yankee Stadium.

So I'm very happy with reception to the film.

-So, you had never heard of Ron Stallworth before the --

-Never heard of him, the book, nothing.

-And you cast --

For those who don't know,

John David Washington is your star?

-Yes, he is. -And who is that?

-He is Denzel's son, yes? There you go.

[ Cheers and applause ]

Very much an incredibly impressive actor on his own.

-Yes. He's been on "Ballers."

I think they're in their fourth season.

But I offered him the part. He didn't have to audition.

No meetin', no nothin'.

I sent him the book, and I said, "I'll see you in September."

-Wow! -Yes. I knew he could do it.

-Not only do you have this incredible cast --

Adam Driver, John David Washington --

Harry Belafonte is in the film. -Yes. Right.

-Obviously, this is a hero of the Civil Rights Movement,

somebody you've known for a long time.

-Long time. -You have a very moving scene

where he recounts a tale of a lynching.

-Real-life. It really happened.

-A real-life lynching that really happened.

-Jesse Washington in Waco, Texas, 1915.

And he plays a character --

his best friend who witnessed it

but was looking from a window down.

And so we -- I want to have --

It's a funny thing, because for years,

Mr. Belafonte would say, "Spike, can you just have

Ossie Davis sit out one film so I can get in?"

And we had this running joke.

When we wrote this part, I knew I wanted him right away.

But he's 90 years old.

And there was some -- You know, 91.

The doctors had to okay it.

And we saved it, too.

I wanted to push it to the last day...

so we had the most time for him, you know, to rest up.

And so the last day of the shoot,

I told the crew the day before,

"Everybody get dressed. Suits, ties."

We had women -- crew members who are women --

"Put on your dresses."

And the crew was sharp.

Our Sunday best. Because he deserved that.

And we wanted to honor him like that.

So we were clean.

-It's an incredibly moving scene.

It's cross-cut with footage from "Birth of a Nation."

-But before that, a Klan initiation rite, too.

-And you also have scenes from "Gone with the Wind."

-The film opens with "Gone with the Wind."

-What was your -- What was the impetus for you

to use this footage from those films specifically?

-Well, those two films are considered

giants of American cinema.

And they are problematic.

I can't hate on that shot that we use,

the shot we use from "Gone with the Wind"

where Scarlett O'Hara --

It's a crane shot, and she's walking among

thousands and thousands

of wounded, or dead, Confederate soldiers,

and it's a great shot, and it ends on the tattered

Stars and Bars of the Confederate Flag.

So we're commenting on those films.

And I remember here in Brooklyn, third or fourth grade,

we had a class trip where they just re-issued

"Gone with the Wind," so we had to go see it.

And the black -- We felt very uncomfortable

watching Hattie McDaniel and Butterfly McQueen.

But we were like 8, 9 years old,

so we didn't understand what was happening.

-And when your school took you to see a movie like that,

there was probably not much of a conversation afterwards

about anything that was problematic.

-No, there was nothing. Nothing.

And to go forward, my first year at NYU Graduate Film School,

our professor screened "Birth of a Nation"...

And talked about the father of cinema, D.W. Griffith,

and the stuff he came up with,

but there was no discussion of how this film --

The time "Birth of a Nation" was released,

the Klan was dormant.

This film brought a rebirth of the Klan,

which led directly to black people lynched again.

And so that stuff was never taught in class.

-You know, as you mentioned, the time we live in right now,

it does feel like there's a rebirth of a lot of things happening.

-Right. -In this era, you were

a month into preproduction when Charlottesville happened

-No. Charlottesville happened August 12th.

-Mm-hmm. -Three days ago.

We didn't start shooting until September.

-Okay, so -- -I got it mixed up in Cannes.

-Okay, got you. -But we started --

We started it -- And it was crazy in Cannes.

[ Laughter ]

So, August 12th, a year ago. What's today? The 14th?

-Um, I have no idea.

[ Laughter ]

-Anyway, it was Sunday.

-Yeah. -A year ago.

I was in Martha's Vineyard, and it happened.

And right then and there,

I knew that that would be the ending of the film,

even though we hadn't started the shoot.

And, so, David Duke...

Agent Orange -- you know who he is --

the alt-right, the KKK, and the Klan.

They wrote the ending for the film.

-I want to ask about this, too, because obviously

you know this is, by design, an incredibly heavy story

that you're telling.

There's also real moments of lightness in this.

-Right. -There is moments of humor.

-Uh-huh.

-It is, at times, a very bright film where you feel hopeful.

Is that something you're balancing in the making of it?

-No. We knew going in that you have to have a balance.

And, so, there's a whole history

of films, great films.

Dr. Strangelove," which was, you know, Peter sellers.

-Sure. -So you can --

It's hard to do, but you can deal --

have humor in very serious subject matter.

-Well, I think you balanced it very well.

-Thank you. -It's a really terrific film,

and it's just an honor to have you here.

Thank you so much, Spike. -Glad to be here.

Where South Korea-Japan relations stand... and should go from now - Duration: 2:30.

On this Liberation Day, it's a good chance to look at where relations stand now... between

South Korea and Japan, the former colonial power.

Japanese forces are long gone from the Peninsula, and Seoul and Tokyo are by-and-large aligned

on policy when it comes to North Korea.

But as our Cha Sang-mi reports, there are still several issues that have kept ties from

being more friendly than they are.

"It's been over seven decades since South Korea gained independence from Japanese colonial

rule in 1945, but historical issues between the two countries still linger.

This statue reminds people of one of those issues, that of the so-called 'comfort women'."

The diplomatic row over the sexual enslavement of Korean women by the Japanese military during

the Second World War has been a long-standing one, a source of constant friction between

the two East Asian countries.

Another prickly issue is the territorial row over South Korea's easternmost Dokdo Island.

It's clear South Korea and Japan aren't on the same page on a slew of issues.

"Public sentiment outday is a little bit tired of the issue being raised constantly by the

Korean side.

We think we have finished this issue by compensations and others, but it seems the Korean side keeps

coming back."

"The Moon Jae-in administration has laid out a two-track approach toward Japan.

That is taking a protective stance, in principal, when it comes to territorial disputes, but

establishing mutual relations that look to the future in politics, economy, and security."

Doctor Nishihara also says South Korea is very important for Japan's security, as U.S.

troops stationed both on Korean and Japanese soil can cooperate.

When it comes to the future of Seoul-Tokyo ties, Professor Nakato says Japan's alliance

with the U.S. has always been cornerstone of Japan's foreign policy, but things look

a bit different now.

"But at the same time, dealing with North Korean issues, cooperation with South Korea

is essential.

Trilateral cooperation between the United States, South Korea and Japan has been actually

the basic operational principle of Japan's North Korean policies."

Burying historical animosities may be difficult, but one thing is clear: both sides agree on

the need to work together towards mutual prosperity and establishing lasting peace on the Korean

Peninsula.

Abe sends ritual offering to Yasukuni shrine for war dead - Duration: 0:49.

August 15th is an important day in Japan, too, of course,... as the anniversary of its

defeat by the Allies in World War Two and the loss of its empire.

Earlier today, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a ritual offering to the controversial

Yasukuni war shrine... to honor the war dead.

Abe didn't go in person, but sent the offering with his special adviser Masahiko Shibayama.

The shrine is controversial because it also honors Class A war criminals.

Paying tribute there is seen in Korea and China as a symbol of Japan's past militarism,

but Abe has sent an offering every year since he took office in 2012.

The South Korean foreign ministry today expressed "deep concerns" over the leaders of the Japanese

government and parliament paying tribute to a shrine that glorifies Japan's history of

aggression.

President Moon express hope of findnig remains of independence fighters - Duration: 1:33.

To mark this important national holiday,...

South Korean President Moon Jae-in gave a speech at a ceremony in Seoul... in which

he praised the independence activists who sacrificed so much for the freedom of their

country.

Kan Hyeong-woo reports.

Korea is celebrating its independence from Japanese imperial rule at the end of the Second

World War 73 years ago on August 15th.

For the first time, the official ceremony was held in what President Moon called the

"heart of Seoul," Yongsan-gu District -- a place long home to the U.S. military's main

base in South Korea, and a large part of which was not administered by the Korean government

but by its ally, the United States.

There, President Moon Jae-in expressed his hope of finding the remains of those who sacrificed

themselves for the freedom of their country.

"Just as Yongsan was lost to us for so long, the history of the independence movement and

its heroes still awaits us."

The President noted that over the past year, the government has been awarding national

merits to those freedom fighters, many of them posthumously.

And he promised that everyone -- without distinction to gender or what role they played -- will

get the praise and respect they deserve.

Korea's independence movement will reach fruition,... he said,... once the remains of the independence

fighters are found and excavated.
