Mary G. Ross Google Doodle in U.S - Duration: 1:55.

The Search Engine Google is showing this Doodle in U.S for celebrating the 110th birthday

of Mary G. Ross, the first American Indian female engineer, whose major contributions

to the aerospace industry include the development of concepts for interplanetary space travel,

manned and unmanned earth-orbiting flights, and orbiting satellites.

Ross was born on this day in 1908.

Her math skills were surpassed only by her passion for aviation and the sciences.

After teaching in Oklahoma for 9 years, she attended the University of Northern Colorado

to pursue her master's degree and love for astronomy and rocket science.

During World War II, Ross was hired by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation as a mathematician.

It was there that she was encouraged to earn her professional certification in aeronautical

engineering from UCLA in 1949, after which she broke new ground as one of the 40 founding

members of the top-secret Skunk Works team.

Her work on the team included developing initial design concepts for interplanetary space travel

(including flyby missions to Venus and Mars) and satellites including the Agena rocket

.

Leading by example, Ross also opened doors for future generations of women and American

Indians by participating in efforts to encourage their pursuits in STEM fields, including being

a member and Fellow of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

In 1992 the SWE established a scholarship in Ross's name, which aims to support future

female engineers and technologists, including Aditi Jain, a current Google Maps engineer.

primary elections for Congress, and President Trump said he was

pulling for Colton Underwood, David Ravitz, and Chris Randone.

And then his staff was like, "Sir, those are contestants

on 'Bachelor in Paradise.'"

[ Normal voice ] I saw that there was a very close special election in Ohio.

And before the results were final, Trump sent a tweet

congratulating the Republican for winning.

When people called him out. Trump said, "Sorry,

for years I have struggled with premature congratulations."

[ As Trump ] Yes, yes.

[ Normal voice ] I heard that Donald Trump, Jr.

called into a radio show the other day.

But when they asked about his Trump Tower meeting with

the Russians, his phone suddenly had technical difficulties.

Or as "Vladimir Putin put it, [ As Putin ] "You're welcome.

[ Laughter and applause ]

I take the phone."

[ Normal voice ] Speaking of Russia, I saw that a list

of topics that Putin wanted to discuss with President Trump

last month in Helsinki was just leaked.

And I don't think that they were on the same page

going into that meeting. Let me show you what I mean.

First, Putin wanted to talk about the advantages

of disarmament, while Trump wanted to talk about

the advantages of learning what "disarmament" means.

[ Laughter ]

Next, Putin wanted to talk about maintaining a sense

of cooperation as opposed to trading petty bargaining chips,

while Trump wanted to talk about chips.

[ Laughter ]

[ As Trump ] What's your favorite?

[ Normal voice ] And finally, Putin wanted to talk about

strengthening our ties,

while Trump wanted to talk about lengthening our ties.

Yeah, he was very --

Listen to this, guys. The Trump Administration

just announced more tariffs on Chinese goods like tractors,

iron, and lubricating oils.

In response, Americans said, "Please don't say 'Trump'

and 'lubricating oils' in the same sentence."

I saw that Trump has been criticizing the way California

has handled their recent wildfires.

And now one of his tweets about wildfires from 2015

has actually resurfaced. Take a look at this.

Well, it didn't stop there.

Then he tweeted...

I have no compassion, care or concern

towards rapists. No, let them be damned.

Sometimes the children will be like, "Okay

I'm gonna go tell my mother, my father and

they're gonna do something."

And then they don't.

They want to hear, "Phaansi pe chadao"

"Phaansi pe chadao", "Phaansi pe chadao".

I don't need you to say anything anymore.

I need you to act.

If you follow MissMalini, you'll have noticed

that we recently started our campaign

for social awareness, called #ItEndsWithMe,

where we introspected on what we can do

to drive real social change.

Because like you, we're tired of the inequality,

discrimination, trolling, sexism and

violence we see in the news on a daily basis.

And it's time for us all to do something about it.

It's time for us to make the pledge that all of this,

ends with us.

That's why my guest today is so important.

She's a supernova of social activism

and she's doing it for the girls.

Trisha Shetty is the founder of SheSays,

an online platform designed to rehabilitate

and empower women to combat sexual abuse.

And she's hell-bent on having the women of India heard

and helped. I think everyone needs to hear what

she has to say, so stay with us.

Hey guys, today I'm sitting here with Trisha Shetty,

she's the founder of SheSays

and I am such a huge fan!

I have to tell you, so, I watched you on this panel

and you were just a firecracker!

And you were talking to a host of people as

they do, you know? Where you have like

15 people in boxes and you were telling everyone,

"I'm not done, let me finish. I have this to say."

I want to know where this firebrand comes from,

this courage and why do this at all?

When you get a call from a father that says

"I have a four-and-a-half-year old child

and she's been raped. I need help."

"I went to the hospital and they didn't treat

my child properly. I need help."

And you show up on ground and you visit the hospital

with them, and when you see the kind of injustice

and revictimisation that women, that survivors' families,

that victims' families, that young children go through

for no fault of their own and that breaks you.

But then, you know, not showing up is not an option.

That father shows up every time to the courtroom.

He once had diarrhea and he called me to be like,

"You know ma'am I have diarrhea,

I can't show up to the courtroom, is it okay?"

"I said don't worry about it, I'm gonna be there.

It's not a problem."

He still showed up!

He ran to the bathroom every two minutes

but he still showed up.

Wow.

When they show up after facing the worst

kind of atrocities and injustice and don't lose hope

and are resilient, that's where the drive and

anger comes from. And then when I go to these debates

and I see these politicians playing the blame game

and saying, "Oh, when your party was in power,

this is what you did to women." And

"Don't look at us because at least

we're not as bad as you."

It's a disservice to women and children at large.

But what do they say in their response?

I mean, are they saying anything that's satisfying to you?

Are they? What should they say?

See, you know here's where I draw the line.

I don't need you to say anything anymore.

I need you to act. When you have elected officials

who say, "Women are like gold, if you expose them they

will get assaulted", or you know, "Men are men,

they'll rape." Or women politicians like Mamta Banerjee,

and I have no issues taking names and

naming and shaming, who after Suzette Jordan,

the brave Park Street rape survivor who said,

"Call me by my name, don't call me Park Street

rape survivor. Call me by my name."

She said "Arrey, this woman could not have been raped,

she's taking her name."

"This is the Maoist conspiracy.

This is a stupid, silly incident."

So, when they do these things, I feel like it's incumbent

upon us as right holders, as tax paying citizens,

to call them out and say,

"I don't need you to come on record and apologise,

or say I condemn this."

This is why my statement was, "I don't need you

to condemn. We want answers we want accountability.

Make sure these people who hold such positions,

who hold such abdominal views don't hold elected

positions anymore. Because they don't deserve to.

I really want to know more about you, you know.

You studied law. What made you choose to take this,

social activist route? You didn't have to do that, right?

Was there something that flipped the switch

for you in a sense?

I mean, I am...

I don't know any other identity.

I am a social activist, which means for me,

there's no off switch when it comes to my work.

This is you know, like if I'm out in a public space

and I see a girl you know,

in a vulnerable situation and I'll instantly jump in.

Like I am that person who you know

bad if a girl is intoxicated I'm making sure, I'm like "Oh

do you have someone I'm taking you" and that

very often they look at me being like,

"Do you work here?"

I'm like "No, I'm not getting paid for this."

"You're puking on me, I'm not getting paid for this."

When I see injustice I just, I've been raised by a feminist

mother without knowing she's a feminist. Like, she

always said, "Don't minimise yourselves, don't apologise

for your presence. And if you're

being wronged, speak up.

It may be aggressive but my philosophy is if food,

clothing, shelter is a guarantee for you

and you are not living in a war-torn area where your

safety is not accounted for then speak up for some

for then, speak up for some issue.

So, I get you always wanted to do this and

you feel strongly, is it much harder than you

anticipated it would be?

Most definitely! I remember the first time I spoke about

marital rape on Arnab's show actually—

That's the first, like time I was like proper national

debate and I made a statement that said, "Marriage is

not a license for sex." Right?

And they tweeted that out from The Times Now handle

and the amount of vitriol and trolling I received

right after that. It was 99% hate. We had to take a step

back and you know, question my sanity and what

I was saying because I was like,

"Whoa like if there's so much hate,

is what I'm saying wrong?"

But the thing is, was it only men or is it women as well?

No, so there are a lot of prominent male

rights activists who are women actually at the front line

of this. So, I wouldn't really, you know generalise

just men when I'm not really like, a restrained apologetic

person. I'm not and I have opinions and I back my

opinions with statistics and data and if I feel like what

you're saying is discriminatory I will call you out.

Yeah, you know so I told everyone on #TheGirlTribe

that I'm gonna be talking to you and everyone had a ton

of questions but I had to select just a few and this one

actually is my mother and she said,

"Recently I heard a lawyer speak when asked about

what the punishment for a rapist should be?

And the lawyer said, "Well, we should educate them,

we should rehabilitate them." And she feels that unless

a harsh punishment is given like the death penalty

then they're not gonna stop. And you can educate boys

who are in the nursery or like before their pre-teens

and when they're grown-up men they're doing it

on purpose so they must have capital punishment.

What do you think?

So I think there are two questions here,

treatment towards rapist and how do you address

crimes against women, right? Or children?

So, I have no compassion, care or concern

towards rapists. I am not a behavioural Dr. XYZ...

So, I direct very little energy towards

"How can we stop potential rapists?" And this and that.

And "What can we do to rehabilitate rapists?"

No, let them be damned!

Coming to the death penalty ordinance that was passed

Now you know, it's unfortunate that people don't realise

what they are asking for. I believe that the government

and the ordinance they have passed has

been very reactionary. They've almost tried to pacify

the audience, the people's anger and not done

what they needed to do to ensure women and children

will be safe. But passed around like one lollipop of a

death penalty saying, "Ha we'll do this for you."

And people have been saying you know, "But what about

the rights of children over the age of 12? Shouldn't

their rapist be given death sentence as well?"

Now my point is let's look at data and statistics.

Like National Crime Records Bureau data, it actually has

a section that lists down the relationship of the rapist

to the child, right? So in 99-100% of these cases

in states that the child knows the rapist, directly in India.

And they've even listed down the relationship of the

rapist to the child with regards to when the rapist was

a brother, grandfather, dad of relation to the child

or close family relation. Simple question to the people,

firstly, the people just don't report child sexuality,

very few people do. But do you think they are

likely to report if they believe that the rapist who's a

close family member or closely known to the child

will be given death sentence?

What will they do instead?

They will harm the child.

To cover it up.

To cover it up!

Second thing is, it's empirical data and evidence:

Death sentence has not served as a deterrent, ever, ever!

It's the assurity of justice, it's the assurity that law

will strike down upon you that serves as a deterrent.

After the Nirbhaya case where her rapists were given

the death sentence, crimes against women have

not gone down, it's gone up by 83%.

Crimes against children has gone up by 80%

in the last two years. And even the Nirbhaya rapist,

they're still alive. You know?

Because unfortunately there's protocol in place,

where you can't just, you know, say,

"I award you the death sentence" and the next day

goes down to the guillotine and his head is chopped off.

That's not the way it works.

And thirdly, the government is abdicating its duty.

We have a less than 30% conviction rate

the sentences are not heard on time

even though section 35 of the POCSO Act

says that cases of child sexual abuse must be

tried within one year. In practice it's not because

how will a case be tired Malini if you know, it takes

close to a year for forensic labs to produce

the medical evidence to court.

Charge sheet is not filed on time. So how will a case

be tried on time?

And it's because the criminals are emboldened

because they're not scared of the law. And these kind of

conversations are not what "sells" to audience at large.

They want to hear, "phaansi pe chadao",

"phaansi pe chadao", "phaansi pe chadao".

But phaansi pe chadake our children are not going to

be any safer. Firstly, toh phaansi pe chadte nai hai.

Kitno ko phaansi pe chadoge?

How many people will you hang, right?

Every household children are being abused.

Have honest conversations with people in your

own household. You know Malini, my team and I

we go and talk to children in schools, we take

gender sensitisation seminars.

The most affluent of schools and colleges the

amount of students we have after every session who

come forward and say, "We've been sexually abused".

Every second child in our country has been sexually

abused, out of which 51.4% of them are young boys.

That's the real statistic and data. Right?

And again children in middle class, upper middle class

affluent families are being sexually abused.

Over 97%, I told you this data, is by someone

known to the child. So it's one creepy uncle, it's your

math tutor, it's your friend's father who's picking you up

from school and touching you whilst his daughter's

right next to him and putting his hand up your school

uniform. It's your math tutor when giving tutions is

groping you. It's your bus

conductor or it could be

your own father, mother, sorry not mother,

father, brother. And these conversations become too

uncomfortable and then these middle class families

say you know, "Ghar ki baat, ghar pe rakho".

"Family shame", "Child will get over it".

"Child will forget about it", "People will talk",

"Society will talk", "I'm doing this to protect my child".

And to the parents who are still apprehensive,

the POCSO Act, which is,

Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences

is a very strong act. In no way can you disclose the

identity of the child, the identity of the parents

the area of the child lives at, the locality, the school

any kind of identifying markers that may help you track

the child or identify the child, you cannot disclose.

But what happens is that as soon as somebody reports

something like suddenly the news is all over it so you..

The media has strict gag rules more often than

not, to pick up a child sexual abuse case in the papers

the child in the name is never disclosed it's, it's very

friendly towards the child, this system.

You don't have to go to the police station more than

once. People in civilian clothes can come take your

statement and once it's done all the hearing is

in-camera proceedings, which basically means

it's not open to the public the child has to go to a

different room with the parents to give the statement

even to the magistrate, the judge. And the system is

very child-friendly but the point is you know even if

they're hesitant towards reporting, Malini they don't even

send their children for counselling... For therapy.

They think their child will get over it.

Send the child for therapy that is a non-negotiable

This is the bigger problem, it's like sometimes

the children will be like okay, "I'm gonna go tell

my mother, my father and they're gonna do something",

and then they don't and that's probably even

more shattering.

And that is exactly right, more than the abuse

it's the feeling of being let down by your own parents.

That they didn't care enough.

It's trauma, that's unaddressed trauma, you try and seek

recourse elsewhere and, of course it will strain a

relationship when you feel let down by the person you

trusted the most. And children don't buy excuses like,

"I don't report it because you know a family will say

something out of shame." And I think we really need to

switch that thing off about, if someone touches my

body without my consent it's not my shame to bear.

It just isn't. And it's just not and even you know,

start having conversations about not asking the child

just before you abuse, "What did you do?"

Because there's no way I can invite molestation

harassment or abuse.

And there's no way I could have prevented it either.

There are definitely things that people can do to help

their children at this stage. There's a video you

showed me called Komal, can you tell us

a little bit about that I thought it was fascinating.

So Komal is a beautiful, almost like a tool kit I look at it

as a tool kit and it talks about a young girl

who another, cue creepy uncle who is touching her

and sexually abusing her and really makes her realise

that if someone is touching you in four certain areas of

your body how can you speak about it to your

family members. You know for parents it's

uncomfortable for them to have that talk with

their children about you know, safe touch and

unsafe touch and if someone touches you what you

can do. So what they can instead do is go online

download this video and show it to your child and say

"If this is happening to you reach out to me."

To share your words like, blow my mind.

I could literally sit here and listen to you forever and

I really want to spend more time again.

UN chief Guterres open to visiting North Korea to help denuclearization efforts - Duration: 0:33.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says.... he's willing to visit North Korea... if there's

a chance that could help with denuclearization.

Speaking to Japanese broadcaster NHK in Tokyo on Wednesday,... the UN chief said he would

visit the North if the ongoing negotiations stall,... adding that "a possible visit will

depend on circumstances that make the visit useful."

Guterres is currently in Japan to attend the annual memorial ceremony for the victims of

the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945.

U.S. presented denuclearization timeline to North Korea, but Pyongyang rejected it - Duration: 2:54.

For weeks, the Trump administration has been saying that there is no timeline related to

the North Korean denuclearization process.

But it seems that might have been entirely true.

According to the latest reports... the U.S. has reportedly asked North Korea to hand over

well over more than 60-percent of its nuclear weapons within a few months.

Pyongyang have also not been responding positively to these demands, and negotiations seems to

be at a worrying standstill.

We'll discuss this further this an expert in the studio, right after this report by

Arirang's foreign ministry correspondent Lee Ji-won.

It's being reported the United States HAS presented a denuclearization timeline to North

Korea, but the regime has refused to accept it.

Multiple U.S. media outlets, including Vox, reported Wednesday that U.S. Secretary of

State Mike Pompeo requested Pyongyang to hand over 60 to 70 percent of its nuclear warheads

within six to eight months,... which Washington or a third party would take possession of.

But it's unclear what the U.S. offered in exchange, if anything.

Citing two people familiar with the discussions, Vox added that Pompeo has presented the timeline

to North Korea numerous times within the past two months, but it was rebuffed each time

by the North Koreans, led by Kim Yong-chol, Pyongyang's Vice Chairman of the Ruling Workers'

Party's Central committee.

According to the Washington Post, U.S. intelligence agencies estimate the North has as many as

60 nuclear warheads,... but the exact number is not known.

Therefore, even if the regime DOES agree to hand over more than half of its warheads,

it would be difficult to verify that was actually the case.

A source told Vox this is why Pompeo's main goal at the current stage of negotiations

is to get North Korea to officially disclose how many nuclear weapons it possesses.

As the talks have not made much progress,... Washington could be losing patience.

The U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, told reporters traveling with her during a

visit to Colombia, that everything is currently in North Korea's court.

She went on to say the international community still expects Pyongyang to keep its promise

to denuclearize and the U.S. is willing to wait if the international community wants

to.

But she warned the U.S. is NOT going to wait for too long.

The negotiations are proving tricky as North Korea is sticking to its guns on the U.S.

fulfilling its side of the bargain.

North Korea's state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun published an editorial on Thursday, urging

Washington to declare an end to the Korean War.

It said ending the war is the first step to securing peace in the region and around the

world, adding it will set a positive atmosphere and build confidence between Pyongyang and

Washington.

the same day that the U.S. plans to begin collecting an extra 25 percent in tariffs

on 16 billion dollars of Chinese goods.

While the U.S. published its final list of goods subject to the new tariffs on Tuesday,...

China's final list revealed on Wednesday differs from an earlier draft announced back in June.

The number of categories of goods subject to the tariffs has risen to 333 from 114,...

but the total value remains unchanged.

The list of goods subject to the tariffs includes energy products, like coal, as well as large

items like cars,... but crude oil has been excluded from the list.

China's latest tariff measures are in response to the earlier U.S. action.

U.S. President Donald Trump is determined to put pressure on China to negotiate trade

concessions,... with Washington imposing tariffs on 34 billion dollars in Chinese goods last

month alone.

So far,...

China has now either imposed or proposed tariffs on 110 billion dollars of U.S. goods.

The blowback from the trade war is becoming apparent in the American job market,... with

a U.S.-based television factory planning to shed staff.

Element Electronics,... a TV manufacturing plant in South Carolina, will layoff at least

126 employees from its Winnsboro plant on October 5th.

This comes as the Trump administration imposed a 25-percent import tax in July,...

which effects Chinese components for TVs and video equipment.

Observers remain concerned as the latest measures by China may trigger President Trump's next

round of threatened tariffs on 200 billion dollar's worth of Chinese goods.

But it seems there is a timeline.

And perhaps it's not surprising that North Korea has rejected it.

What do you make of this report?

2 - Bolton has suddenly emerged and has been very vocal about North Korea in recent days.

He has said North Korea has not been doing enough.

Why do you think he's coming out so strongly?

3 - 38 North has reported on new findings from satellite photos saying North Korea has

continued to dismantle its nuclear missile launch site.

The report does offer notes of caution, but it does seem North Korea is at least trying

to show it is dismantling part of its nuclear program, do you think there is some significance

in that?

4 - Does this put pressure on the U.S. to offer North Korea more incentives?

4a - Contrary to Bolton, Trump has continued to praise Kim Jong-un and the North for taking

steps towards denuclearization.

BOK releases data on Korea's financial market trends for July - Duration: 1:36.

South Korea's central bank has released its data on financial market trends for July.

It shows... the ongoing trade war between the world's two superpowers affected the local

markets again.

Kim Hyesung has the details.

The Bank of Korea says the country's three-year treasury yields moved lower on heightened

external uncertainties stemming from the escalating U.S.-China trade spat.

Yields fell zero-point-zero-eight percent from two-point-two percent between end of

May to the end of June...remained at two-point-one percent through the end of July...then fell

slightly to two-point-zero-seven percent as of Wednesday.

The central bank attributed the smaller fall in three-year treasury bond yields to expectations

of a possible rate hike in July, which would've lifted the bond yield.

The Bank of Korea, however, stood pat on its key rate...leaving it at one-point-five percent.

The ten-year bond yield remains unchanged from end of June....at two-point-five-six

percent as of Wednesday.

Bank lending to Korean households saw a slower pace of growth in July than the previous month

on fewer housing transactions.

Lending to the corporate sector jumped by nearly five-point-two billion U.S. dollars

in July on increased demand for loans from small and mid-sized companies who needed to

pay their value added tax bills.

As a whole, deposit-taking by banks decreased in July to a negative seven-point-seven billion

dollars as firms withdrew funds to pay their first-half value added tax by the July deadline.

S. Korean gov't reliable partner in maritime implementation of UN sanctions: U.S. State Dept. - Duration: 0:47.

There have been reports that South Korea has failed to stop North Korean coal from being

shipped into the country.

But on Wednesday, the U.S. reaffirmed its trust in South Korea.

The State Department told Yonhap News... that it considers the government in Seoul a reliable

partner in the enforcement of UN Security Council resolutions, which it's required to

do by inspecting ships that are under suspicion.

The State Department said Washington and Seoul are working together closely,... and it's

aware that South Korea has opened an investigation into the coal import claims.

UN sanctions ban the North from selling mineral resources, but one of several incidents occured

just last weekend when a ship docked in South Korea after stopping at a Russian port with

black material believed to be coal from the North.

Transport ministry considers banning BMW on the road - Duration: 2:01.

South Korea's transport ministry is looking at banning tens of thousands of late model

BMWs from the road... until they've been put through examinations.

Dozens of the German cars have caught fire in Korea because of a faulty engine part.

In the meantime, consumers are taking legal action.

Our Choi Si-young tells us more.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it is considering banning

BMWs from the road to prevent any more fires.

The ministry said the ban will apply to cars that have not passed a safety examination.

BMW Korea is supervising the safety examinations which are focused on the faulty engine part

known as EGR or Exhaust Gas Recirculation,... believed to be the cause of recent BMW engine

fires.

Out of 100-thousand vehicles subject to recall, only about 47-thousand have gone through the

examinations as of Tuesday.

On Thursday, a group of BMW owners in South Korea filed a police complaint,... seeking

a criminal investigation into BMW officials like Vice President Johann Ebenbichler, in

charge of quality control at BMW Group, and Kim Hyo-joon, the chief of the South Korea

unit.

Barun Law Firm says it lodged a complaint on behalf of 20 BMW owners and one victim

of a BMW vehicle-related fire.

In the petition, the owners claim BMW was aware of the extent of the problem with the

part after an engine fire in Europe in 2016... but has only recently concluded that the EGR

is the source of engine fire.

The lawyer representing the owners said that the authorities should initiate a probe into

BMW Headquarters and BMW Korea to prevent any evidence from being destroyed.

On Wednesday local time, a German newspaper reported that a faulty EGR module in some

BMW diesel cars,... which caused engine fires in South Korea, prompted a massive recall

of 324-thousand units in Europe.

So far this year, 36 engine fires have happened in Korea.
