Can I take a quadcopter to a different country?
Hey everyone! I get this question a lot..
after I post a travel video that has a lot of aerial footage in it.
My most recent trip was to Peru for work
I traveled with two other guys to do photo and video for hotels there.
My boss for these projects travels with a lot of camera equipment and quadcopters often.
So he has a lot of experience with this and has found a Carnet very useful
to get through customs quick in some countries.
A Carnet is an international customs and temporary export-import document.
It is used to clear customs in 86 countries and territories with out paying
duties and import taxes on things
that will be re-exported within 12 months
A Carnet is like a passport but passport for goods
So it shows proof you are not selling it in a different country.
Like you bring.. show to customs..
Then you can take it.
When you come back it shows proof you still have it
when you are leaving with your equipment.
It could help you process through customs faster.
Especially if you carry a lot of stuff and traveling a lot.
But it might not be something you want to do
if you are only taking one trip a year
and only want to take one quadcopter for personal use.
First, do some research and see how it (carnet) works and if it is for you.
Even with a Carnet we spent many hours going through customs
while they check everything.
My last trip to Peru, we had everything in order.
And had Carnet ready. But we were stuck in customs for two hours!
They wanted to check every serial number on equipment, quadcopters, and batteries.
They looked at the Carnet.. eh..
Wanted to look through everything to make sure we are not lying.
What made it worse, was that we had so much equipment and three people on the trip.
But if you travel.. with one quadcopter and one camera
that could be faster.
While we were waiting in customs
they had to take some phone calls in the back room.
I didn't know what was going on.
Then they came out and said that we could take all camera equipment.
But, quadcopters have to stay
and wait for government approval
Two days later we got approved.
And had to come back to the airport to pick up the quadcopters.
While we were stuck in customs
I saw three people come in with their quadcopters.
Two were taken out and put in clear plastic bags and put in back room.
And the two guys had to walk away without them.
And the other guy was on a phone call and was really upset that he couldn't take his with him.
Maybe he couldn't get government approval?
I hope they got them back later!
So, it is very important to research a country
and their rules about quadcopters before you go.
So, to make it easy for everyone here are my
tips to travel with a quadcopter.
Research the country about their rules on quadcopters.
And see if they have special rules about when and where you can fly.
Like, if you want to fly at a famous landmark or area.
See if you need to get government approval.
Research a Carnet.
See if it's something you want to do and how to get it.
When you book your flight, make sure you have a long time
at least two hours in between connecting flights
if you will have to go through customs.
So you won't miss your flight.
Bring cash and original receipt of purchase if you have it.
To show the proof of the value
They may ask for a deposit of a percent of the value.
I would bring at least 30% of quadcopter value.
For example, if this was $1000 dollars so 30% would be $300 dollars.
It could be more or less depending on the country.
They should give the money back to you when you leave.
Always get to the airport early.
Declare the quadcopter on the customs form before you get off the plane.
Act friendly.
Smile more.
Don't be nervous or frustrated
it could make it worse for you.
Be prepared to be patient
when going through customs.
Write your name, phone number, email
in case if you have to leave it with customs.
I hope my tips help you to be prepared for your trip.
But remember these are just what I've heard about and learned from experience.
So use these tips as a guide but it's always good to
research on your own.
