In the food world, salt is kind of a superhero.

Without it, french fries are bland, potato chips are boring, and chocolate chip cookies

lose their pop.

And that's because salt doesn't just make things salty—it has lots of effects on flavor

perception.

In fact, if you're thinking about using a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go

down, a pinch of salt might actually work better.

At the most basic level, humans like salt because we need it to survive.

Salt as we know it—which is usually sodium in the form of sodium chloride—is an essential

nutrient.

You use sodium ions for everything from communication between your neurons to managing your blood

pressure.

But your body can't just make sodium from scratch.

It's an element and you are not a star…

So, you have to get at least some from your diet.

And since there isn't usually much salt lying around unless you live near the ocean,

it makes sense that we evolved a taste for it to make sure we get enough.

In 2010, researchers confirmed that we mostly taste saltiness thanks to epithelial sodium

channels, which are basically pores that let sodium ions into the taste receptor cells

in your taste buds.

Those cells then signal your brain that something's salty.

But, weird as it might sound, salt actually makes things sweeter because it reduces your

perception of bitter flavors.

Studies have found that salt is actually better at reducing bitterness than sugar.

Scientists don't have the mechanism for it completely figured out, but research suggests

it involves both your tongue and your brain.

Most of the bitterness-blocking happens in your taste buds, where it's thought the

sodium might interfere with the binding between bitter compounds and their taste cell receptors.

Salt also reduces other unpleasant tastes, so flavor chemists think it influences other

taste cells too.

Somehow.

But researchers have also found that if you're given salt and a bitter compound in such a

way that they don't mingle on your tongue, you still perceive the overall flavor as slightly

less bitter.

That suggests some of the anti-bitterness effect comes from how your brain interprets

multiple taste signals when they include saltiness.

Salt may also enhance sweetness more directly.

We know that in mice, at least, one of the proteins that pulls sugar into taste receptor

cells can't do its job without sodium.

So a dash of salt could mean an extra burst of sweet.

Salt can also make things taste better by making them smell better.

When you add salt, its ions are attracted to some of the available water in the food.

And that makes it easier for volatile compounds — molecules that evaporate quickly and often

contribute to something's aroma — to escape into the air.

Those compounds may not hit your tongue, but they still contribute a lot to your perception

of flavor.

Salt also seems to do other things to make food more enjoyable … although scientists

can't really explain them yet.

For instance, volunteers in a 1985 study said salted split pea soup was not only saltier,

sweeter and less bitter than the unsalted version — it was also thicker and fuller,

altering what food scientists call mouthfeel.

That one single ingredient transformed the whole dish!

Though, honestly, I would not want pea soup without any salt in it.

That sounds bad.

So, if you're not happy with your dinner, there's a good chance that reaching for

your salt shaker will help.

But if you're in the mood for more than just plain old regular salt, you can also

infuse salt with flavor to make your meals even more exciting.

In his Skillshare class, Infused Salts: How to Add Flavor to Any Dish, Kevin Kawa goes

over the three main techniques for infusing salts -- who knew there were three ways to

infuse salts?!-- and teaches you how to make a different infused salt for each technique.

Other students have also added their own infused salt recipes after taking this class, so you

Melania Makes Shock Announcement From Shooting Victims Hospital Room After What She Saw - Duration: 6:05.

Melania Makes Shock Announcement From Shooting Victims Hospital Room After What She Saw.

The shooting in Florida broke the hearts of every American when they heard the news.

Not only because it was heartbreaking but because it was adolescent children and teenagers

who were the victims.

It was the second deadliest shooting in American history.

And as a result, the President and First Lady visited the victims in Florida and their families.

During his visit there President Trump took the opportunity to praise first responders

and doctors who responded to this tragic event.

Most notably, he and Melania Trump praised them for responding quickly.

They did so during a surprise visit on Friday to Broward Health North hospital.

Bizpac Review reported,

"Trump praised the "speed" at which law enforcement officers reached Marjory Stoneman

Douglas High School when the first shots rang out to reporters gathered at the hospital.

"It's very sad, something like that could happen.

But the job the doctors did, the nurses, the hospital, first responders, law enforcement,

really incredible.

The speed that they got the victims over to the hospital is like — one case 20 minutes,

in one case 19 minutes from the time of the shots.

It's an incredible thing," Trump told reporters at the hospital, also praising doctors

for the "incredible jobs" they were doing with the victims.

Trump made the visit to the hospital two days after former student Nikolas Cruz opened fire

on his old school, killing 17 and wounding multiple people.

Cruz told cops he was the shooter and has since been charged with seventeen counts of

premeditated murder.

While the Palm Beach Post reported,

"In a tweet posted from Mar-a-Lago shortly before midnight, President Donald Trump released

photos of his visits on Friday evening with a victim of the Parkland shooting and the

doctors, nurses and first-responders who cared for victims.

The president has no official events today and appears to have no activities planned

outside Mar-a-Lago.

He is expected to attend a fundraiser tonight at Mar-a-Lago hosted by Orphan's Promise,

a children's charity affiliated with the Christian Broadcasting Network."

Breitbart News reported,

"Gov. Rick Scott and Sen. Marco Rubio joined the president and first lady at a roundtable

of law officials who responded to the shooting.

They met Officer Michael Leonard of the Coconut Creek Police Department, the official who

spotted and arrested the shooter.

Trump joked that Leonard was too "modest" after he told the story of how he apprehended

the shooter.

"Very few people would have done what you did," Trump said.

"I think it was a fantastic job."

Melania Trump also spoke to the officials.

"Thank you all for what you do and saving our children.

That's the most important; they're our future, and let's take care of them because

they will go through a lot," she said.

Sheriff Scott Israel thanked the president and his wife for visiting the community.

"Our conversation is not what I'm going to remember most.

I'm going to remember most about a half hour that you and the first lady spent with

the son [who was shot] of one of our injured deputies," Israel said to Trump.

"I'll never forget that, and for you to do something like that is amazing and shows

what you think of law enforcement, and we appreciate it.

Melania Trump told the first responders:

"Thank you all for what you do and saving our children.

That's the most important; they're our future, and let's take care of them because

they will go through a lot."

The tragedy in Florida was nothing short of heartbreaking.

The United States and all of our citizens are lucky to have somebody like Melania Trump

and the President representing our nation and giving credit to our first responders

like they never have before.

First responders put their lives on the line to protect the American public without a second

thought for their own safety.

They deserve to have a little bit of public admiration.

If it weren't for the first responders many more could have likely died as a result of

the shooting.

But they did not because of their swift and rapid responses, which the President and First

Lady made it a point to recognize.

They are a class act and bring pride to the American people and the Americans who work

in the public service industry.

Let us pray that our first responders take care of themselves as well as they respond

to this crisis,

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they

shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame

shall not consume you."
