What's up gang
Were gonna have
randomly here at the Ritz in Charlotte North Carolina
And we bumped into David Tyree
A lot of you know the catch off the helmet
in the Super Bowl against the Patriots
I just I feel like it was meant to happen
because as I'm looking him up
I seen he played with my cousin Walter
Walter Reyes - at the 'Cuse (Syracuse)
and anybody that knows Walter
knows he was just mad about the orange
so I know there's a bond with that
and he almost looks like Walter a lil bit
It makes me feel good!
So I was asking him
people see that one catch
"that's a great catch by David Tyree"
"Pressing it against his helmet as he goes to ground"
"and not dropping it is David Tyree"
but all the things that maybe happened in your life
to even put you in a position to be on the field
to make the team
there's cats that come in the first/second round
they don't always make it
there are guys that come in the 6th round that end up hall of famers
So what kind of leads up to that moment?
You know that can transfer sports or business,
any advice you got for people
The short answer for right now,
for me and my experience
was all about faith
As I considered coming into the 2007 season
that was the year we got the chance to win that championship
ours backs was against the wall
me as a competing guy
I'm a guy that kind of has to GRIND to make the roster every year
special teams GRIND
back to wide receiver,
you know at the end of the day
I was well appreciated
but never considered to be a shoe-in
so you know the hustle is right
and self awareness has to be right
the humility has to be right
you gotta appreciate
so there was the gratitude and there was the faith
You step in there and you know and I have this desire
real quick - so being that somebody who wasn't as looked to
every game, every practice
how do you build yourself up?
you know like what burns you to get on the field
to overcome those hurdles of maybe not being
that person that everybody's looking at immediately?
It has to start with belief
faith is not just faith, faith starts with belief
but belief doesn't 100% equal faith
so I started thinking you know what?
I have to qualify the belief that I can do this
but I believe that I'm the best
so you have to believe that your the best
if you don't that you're well equipped to be on that field
then its never gonna genuinely transfer
I'm talking you have to genuinely believe it not just say it
that's a part of it,
you start with belief that I can get the job done
and everything I have to do out there - I put the work in
and that's the next element of faith
so we've heard it
faith without work is dead, right
so I gotta put the work in there
and those were some of the things that that you always have to do
I'm a lower rung guy so Im always GRINDING
I don't want to say the chip on the shoulder
because I was content but at the same time I believe this
so my beliefs have to be qualified by the way I put in the work
So you mentioned that work ethic
putting in the work, putting in the preparation
I speak on this
I've added up the amount of hours that a collegiate athlete
or professional
would put in weekly
and then the minutes of game time
that boils down into
that's like 95% work - 5% reward
and what happens in the 5%
is really going to look like the 95%
so what advice would you give on
work ethic for somebody that's an underdog?
trying to GRIND it out
what type of work do think is necessary
to make it at the next level?
to make it at the next level
obviously you gotta have some talent
but you have to be willing to do what others wont
this is what I say
once you get to this level were talking about
the highest level of professionalism
it's not just how hard you work
At the end of the day
that's really where it becomes
according what your core values and beliefs are
that might change for everybody
and that's why some fade off into the sunset
they may be okay with it, they might not be okay with it
and that means you just wasn't willing to sacrifice
so it no longer becomes an issue is how hard are you willing to go
but what are you willing to sacrifice... to get there
Its always that way - give up to go up
Absolutely that's the trade-off
I don't take that lightly because
honestly when it came to my experience of the football game
on the football field, thats where my spiritual guy in me
the faith element of my life really came into play
was my trust and belief in God,
that he was who he said he was in my life
that really propelled some opportunities
that I couldn't have done by myself
that's the third element that comprises faith,
you have faith, you got belief,
you got works and then you got endurance
If you're not willing to endure
to see the promise to the end
your never going to see it - that's the bottom line
you have to endure
you have to see it through
Too many people quit along the way
endure obstacles, endure pain, setbacks
For me that catch wasn't just you know
In that one year alone, there was an injury at the beginning of the season
my mom passed away in December
I had to bury my mom
there was all kinds of things that had to be endured
even though I knew God was going to do something great in my life
so I had to endure , I had to believe
I had to put the work in, i had to prepare
most people would've gave up mentally after all of that
injuries, losing your mother
I know people that lose their girlfriend
and its over
and they are real blows so its not to minimize it
but its what are you steadfast on
what do you believe in
and you know the
endurance is really what holds that faith together
until you see it through to the end
I think that's what you have when you have a God moment
you have to consider all three elements to see something
that appears to be impossible come to fruition
Man, Straight fire!
thank you
I appreciate you
I didn't know him from Adam
and I know people that have a lot less notoriety and success
that stick their nose up a lot more
and this man was like yeah let's get it
I appreciate your humility man
I can just feel your spirit
that moment and all the things you accomplished
and you just gettin started
you're going to help a lot of people man
change a lot of people's lives
I believe you've been blessed for reason
I know you're gonna use that gift
to change and impact a lot of people's lives
a lot like I tell Maurice
the exact same thing
thank you brother
