Valentines Day Special | Giving Thanks | Thursday Workday Pruning | Vlog - Duration: 9:15.

This is my Valentine's Day special video, and Valentine's Day is also my birthday,
so I want to celebrate by giving thanks. And I want to give thanks to all the
wonderful people who have showed me love during this ordeal with my arm. And now
don't be misled. I am still in a sling when I'm out, but around the house I can
go without it. I still have to be very, very careful, and physical therapy starts
this week. By the way, I post updates about my condition and other things on
my Community page on my channel home page. So if you go to the channel home
page, look for the community tab and click on that and check in and leave me
comments. And we can interact more directly. So first of all, I want to start
with shout outs to some wonderful people who have showed me so much support and
love, and later we'll get into a quick look at Thursday workday which was
mostly pruning trees, which is so important in a garden.
But first... The first gift, handcrafted caramels from my old friend Rima Duvall;
Happy birthday and Get Well cards from old friends; a cactus themed Get Well
card from my theater group, Classical Theatre Lab; pepper seeds from fan
Michelle Brodbeck, who writes that I inspired her with my pepper videos;
squash and huacatay seeds from fan UB Solorio, who I met in person at the
National heirloom Expo (these make me wish I had a bigger garden); and two hand
needlepoint Christmas tree ornaments from my old friend Dotty Petrosky. Dotty
became a Master Gardener long before I even started gardening. She accompanied
me in two of my Palo Alto garden videos.
She's given me a number of needlepoint pieces over the years and has the most
uniform and perfect stitches I've ever seen. These will be treasured.
All of those gifts are so wonderful and I'm so grateful, and I'm so grateful for
all of my really special fans like Jean and Dolly, and oh, well, so many. You'll see
most of them on my community page leaving comments. But I want to give a
special shout out to David Harton. David is somebody who has been watching my
channel since 2013, and he says he doesn't miss a video. We've recently
connected on Instagram. I thanked him for showing me a little love during this
broken arm, on Instagram, and he says, "No, thank you
for always providing such high-quality videos. I always find myself going back
and re-watching your videos over and over again, both for the educational
content and the entertainment value. And that's always what I've been after from
the very beginning with my Late Bloomer Show, of a hundred episodes. I always
included animations to attract children, and bloopers at the end just to leave
you with a little chuckle, and always G-rated, so that my videos would be
appropriate for all audiences. David has become a patron of my channel, which
means that every month he donates a little bit of money to help me keep
going. And if you are interested in seeing this channel continue after April,

keep making videos. Certainly, making videos, travel videos, is expensive and

Thursday, let's take a look at the workday. I had been procrastinating
pruning the olive trees since before the accident, but there was a light load on
Thursday, yes, and I decided to get it done. Erick is not comfortable pruning
trees unless I micromanage all the major cuts, so I set up my chair and camera in
the shade, and out of harm's way, and gave verbal instruction. This olive tree
produced thousands of olives in 2016,
thank you, and none in 2017, but it grows six feet a year regardless. It gets so
thick in the middle, one has to work from the outside in.
Working from the roof was the simplest to prune three feet off the top of the
other olive tree. Hummingbirds were not fazed with me sitting right below the
feeder. I studied the Valencia orange tree and
determined it could do with some shaping.
Leaf miner makes the leaves look terrible
and I asked Erick to take off all the ends of branches without oranges. I also
asked him to remove some oranges from the top branch which was overly burdened
with weight.
Let me let me see some of those branches.
It totally disfigures the citrus, but as you can see, it's still got a ton of fruit
on it. It still produces, but I'm just cleaning this up, because we didn't get a
chance to prune it before the oranges all set.
