What's up, guys?
Frazier here for Complex News.
When Isaiah Thomas took the court for the Lakers on Wednesday night for his second game
with the team since getting dealt to Los Angeles at the NBA trade deadline, he was likely looking
to build on the success he enjoyed during his first game.
He scored 22 points against the Mavericks on Saturday night and looked like he could
potentially revert back to being the player he was last season with the Celtics.
But unfortunately for him, he didn't last very long during the Lakers' most recent
matchup against the Pelicans.
Thomas and Rajon Rondo were both ejected from the Lakers/Pelicans game on Wednesday night
before the end of the first quarter.
During a bizarre sequence of events that took place with less than a minute remaining on
the clock, Thomas and Rondo got tangled up, exchanged words, and then had to be physically
separated by the game's referees.
They were both hit with double technical fouls and sent packing.
It came after Thomas scored just 3 points in 5 minutes of action.
After the game, Thomas was asked about what happened between him and Rondo, and he seemed
as confused as everyone else about it.
Thomas suggested Rondo targeted him from the moment he checked into the game, and he claimed
Rondo hit him in the face several times while also taunting him about the tribute video
the Celtics had planned to play for him prior to a game when he was still playing with the
Cavaliers.
Even though Thomas played a part in getting the Celtics to change their plans to play
the tribute video since they were thinking about doing it on the same night as Paul Pierce's
jersey retirement ceremony, Thomas said Rondo still seemed upset it was scheduled in the
first place.
"He's an upset guy about me.
I don't know what it's for, but it's fine.
He kept bringing the tribute up, when I was the one that shut the tribute down.
I'm far past that…For me to be ejected was uncalled for."
Thomas was asked by reporters if he and Rondo have any bad blood as a result of anything
else that happened in the past.
Thomas said he couldn't think of any reason why Rondo would dislike him, but he did bring
up the fact that Thomas and the Celtics knocked off Rondo and the Bulls in the playoffs last
season.
"I mean, my team beat his team in the playoffs last year.
Maybe that is what's wrong.
I don't know.
There's nothing.
Nothing should've made that escalate like it did.
He already had his agenda written down right when I checked into the game.
It was obvious.
He picked me up full court, trying to be physical."
Thomas also let it be known that he didn't feel as though he should have been ejected
from the game.
He blamed the game's officials for letting Rondo take things too far and said he plans
on trying to get the league to rescind the technical fouls that were given to him.
"It felt like they were waiting for me to get upset.
I got hit in the face three times, and the third time I got hit in my face, I reacted
and tried to tell the refs, 'Are you guys going to control this?'
I definitely need to get those technical fouls rescinded."
Rondo didn't speak with the media after the game, so he didn't get a chance to tell
his side of the story.
But if he did, in fact, taunt Thomas over the tribute video the Celtics planned for
him, it wouldn't be all that surprising.
After a Pelicans game in January, Rondo was asked about the video, and he said he didn't
understand why Boston was going to honor Thomas.
"What has he done?"
Rondo also had a response for a reporter who suggested Thomas deserved a tribute video
for leading the Celtics to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2017.
"Oh, that's what we celebrate around here?"
For those who might be wondering, the Lakers and Pelicans are scheduled to play one more
time this season.
They will meet in New Orleans on March 22.
It'll be interesting to see if Thomas and Rondo have cooled off by then or if they decide
to go at it again when they take the court.
After what took place on Wednesday, it wouldn't be a shock to see them butt heads for a second
time when the two teams match up.
