From small town Pennsylvania to one of hip hop's
most buzzing newcomers, Lil
Skies is creating his own blueprint
on the way to rap stardom.
Here's what you need to know about him.
Born Kimetrius Foose, Lil
Skies was introduced to hip hop around the same time
he was learning to talk.
The result of a father who had tried his hand
at a rap career under the name Dark Skies.
With musical influences ranging from Lil Wayne
to 50 Cent to Travis Scott, 20 year old Lil
Skies is winning over millions of young fans
by blending accessible lyrics with natural charisma
and catchy melodies and plenty of face tats, of course.
A savvy internet user, Lil
Skies was able to build the buzz on SoundCloud and YouTube,
releasing mix tapes like 2016's
"Good Grades Bad Habits 2" and 2017's "Alone"
and gaining cosigns from popular YouTube channel
CufBoys through which he met frequent collaborator,
Landon Q.
After catching the air of Atlantic Records,
who signed the rapper to a record deal in 2017, Lil
Skies would get his first taste of viral success later that year
with the release of a Cole
Bennett directed music video for "Rare Roses."
Before the end of 2017,
Skies delivered yet another viral hit, "Nowadays,"
a precursor to his major label debut,
Life of a Dark Rose, which would peak at number 10
on the Billboard 200 upon his January 2018 release.
Moving from rural small town Pennsylvania life
to internet sensation
to one of the most buzzing new rap artists
in just a few months, Lil
Skies is breaking the mold of what it means
to be a traditional rap star.
In less than two years time, he's turned cinematic music
videos and hustle anthems into a fan base of millions.
Skies reportedly turned down a spot on the 2018
XXL freshman cover.
But he's achieved plenty of mainstream exposure elsewhere.
Over the past 12 months, he's toured with Lil Uzi
Vert, Rae Sremmurd and Wiz Khalifa
who featured him on his new album
Rolling Papers 2 and performed at Post Malone's
inaugural festival Posty
Fest and he's already got a platinum plaque
for "Rare Roses"
with two gold plaques for "Nowadays" and "Lust."
With hundreds of millions of plays
across streaming services, Lil Skies managed to turn
SoundCloud buzz into real deal hot 100 hits.
In short order, he's positioned himself
as one of the most popular young artists
in hip hop streaming era generation.
He's still hungry though. As he told Billboard,
"I'm still in the process of developing
and getting my shit established as a brand and my music."
Rolling Stones subbed
Lil Skies SoundCloud raps small town success story.
His story is only getting started.
