The Who's Who of SoundCloud Rap - Duration: 3:31.
Hey everyone, for Complex News I'm Justin Block.
If a rapper without "lil" in their name drops a project on SoundCloud and no one presses
play, does it really make a sound?
That's what it feels like keeping up with the onslaught of buzzing rappers, mixtapes,
and hip-hop subgenres in 2017.
Even though it's more relevant than ever, SoundCloud has weathered a tough year.
In early July, the streaming platform laid off 173 employees amid rumors the company
only had enough capital to make it to the end of 2017.
Chance the Rapper even claimed he was going to save the day.
Independent musicians panicked about what this meant for the future of distributing
their music.
Ultimately, SoundCloud announced that it's here to stay, whatever that means.
SoundCloud is home to an entire nation of rappers with colored dreads, melodies inspired
by 2000s emo and pop punk, and the latest mutations of Atlanta's trap.
A lot of the music is groundbreaking, much of it is not.
The term "SoundCloud Rap" has become a dismissive descriptor in the same way "Mumble
Rap" has.
And the SoundCloud ecosystem is shifting.
The platform is still influential, but Spotify's RapCaviar playlist and Apple's A-List: Hip-Hop
playlist are leading the curated playlist era.
Rappers who built their fan bases on SoundCloud have started to phase out of the system that
birthed them.
Problematic rappers like XXXTentacion are transitioning from millions of plays on SoundCloud
to selling a possible 70,0000 units for his debut album "17."
If anything, SoundCloud's biggest problem is keeping the stars it helped birth from
becoming fuel for the engines of its competitors.
With that said, here are some of the biggests artists dominating SoundCloud.
First up is Trippie Redd, an 18-year-old from Canton, Ohio.
His biggest song to date is the devastating and psychedelic "Love Scars."
The closest comparison lobbed at Trippie is undoubtedly Lil Uzi Vert.
Next up is Kodie Shane, easily the most talented member of Lil Yachty's Sailing Team.
Her ear for melodies and ability to execute them separates her from most rapper's in
her weight class.
Check out her song "Sad," where she upstages her bigger bro.
Then there's Lil Peep, an emo artist with trap influences.
In early August, Peep released his debut album, Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 1.
It's even more of an emo rock project than his previous music.
In fact, it might not even be correct to call Peep a rapper anymore.
Now hailing from the DMV, Rico Nasty is best known for her song "Hey Arnold," which
Lil Yachty jumped on.
Her project Tales of Tacobella is one of the best of 2017.
Her latest song "Poppin'" is a blistering diss supposedly aimed at another female rapper,
Bali Baby.
With the right push, the song and the story behind it have the potential to go viral.
Next up is Lil Pump, who has an undeniable formula.
The secret to the South Florida teen's style seems to be something like, pick a name out
of a hat, compare that name to how rich and successful you are, and rap it over a booming
beat.
Check out "D Rose" for the best example of this.
Or on "Lil Pump," where he says his own name over and over again like a mystic chant.
He's not reinventing the wheel but he doesn't need to.
He's got something else.
Ski Mask the Slump God has the No. 10 song on the SoundCloud Top 50 right now, with "Catch
Me Outside."
It's a blistering translation of the 1999 Missy Elliott song "She's a Bitch" that
even Missy noticed, and showed love to in this tweet.
So, it's hard to pinpoint what type of rapper Smokepurpp wants to be.
If there was a game of "build-a-SoundCloud-rapper," the 19-year-old Florida has the catchy adlibs
of Playboi Carti and the auto-tune gargling of Lil Yachty.
"To the Moon" isn't his biggest song, but it easily one of his most creative.
This is what Kid Cudi's 2008 song "Man on the Moon" would sound like if he'd
made it in 2017.

JUST IN: FBI Makes Horrifying Hillary Announcement | Top Stories Today - Duration: 3:52.
Despite the fact that Donald Trump is the President of the United States and leader
of the Executive Branch, that doesn't mean every department of government is willing
to respect his decisions.
In fact, it turns out that one government bureau is defying Trump, and instead, is doing
its utmost to shield Hillary Clinton.
According to Fox News, the FBI has shut down the request for files on Hillary Clinton – basically
covering for her crimes.
Their justification: a lack of significant public interest.
Ty Clevenger, an attorney in New York City, filed a Freedom of Information Act request
last year asking for a variety of documents and details from the FBI and Justice Department
– including correspondence exchanged between Congress and the FBI regarding the Clinton
email investigation.
Shockingly, the head of the FBI's Records Management Division denied his request, saying
that they "determined you have not sufficiently demonstrated that the public's interest
in disclosure outweighs personal privacy interests of the subject.
Therefore, records regarding your subject are withheld pursuant to FOA exemptions."
Of course, this is complete nonsense.
How could the potential corruption of one of the top figures in the Democrat Party be
irrelevant to the public's interest?
In fact, politicians should be required to have even more transparency when it comes
to their dealings.
The FBI has proven to be increasingly corrupt over the past few years.
Former FBI Director James Comey would refuse to recommend criminal charges against Clinton
for what even he had to admit was an "extremely careless" breach of public security regarding
her private email server and the transmission and storage of top secret information.
Specifically, Clevenger is asking for all documents resulting from the September 6,
2016, referral to the Justice Department from then-House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz.
At the time, Chaffetz asked the department to determine whether Clinton had violated
statutes that prohibit destruction of records, obstruction of inquiries, and concealment
or covering up evidence material.
"If you seek disclosure of any existing records on this basis, you must demonstrate
that the public interest in disclosure outweighs personal privacy interests," stated the
FBI's response letter.
"In this regard, you must show that the public interest sought is a significant one
and that the requested information is likely to advance that interest."
Clevenger was, justifiably, shocked at the comment.
"Frankly, I am stunned I should have to explain why my request pertains to a matter
of public interest," the lawyer wrote back to the FBI.
Regardless, it seems that the corruption within this bureau extends deeper than it first appeared.
If the efforts of civilians such as Clevenger show little sign to get anywhere, then the
nation's best chance to ever see Clinton's crimes come to justice lies in the Trump administration
itself.
The FBI shut down a recent Freedom of Information Act inquiry into Hillary's emails because
of a lack of significant public interest.
Are her emails still of public interest?
A couple of weeks ago, there were signs that the Clinton email investigation was being
reopened.
According to The Blaze, Clinton was even offered a plea deal – but refused.
"They are seriously thinking of reopening this investigation," said the article, and
since Clinton won't ever be willing to accept a plea deal and admit she did something wrong,
then the investigation "is going to drag on for a long time."
Hopefully, Clinton will be exposed for all the crimes she has covered up for.
Then it should be on to those in the FBI covering for her.

Hi guys, welcome to a new video.
Many of you voted at my latest poll for behind the scenes and vlog videos.
I searched the internet for a flexible and lightweight solution to film that kind of videos without a heavy camera.
I ordered the Uoplay 2S from Aibird
So I am going to show you this smartphone gimbal now.
So you probably think: What is that? Looks like a modern selfie stick?! But it´s not.
I will show you all features of the gimbal and test If it makes by videos better.
The gimbal arrived in this modern and clean package.

The delivery contains a carry bag, so your gimbal is protected while you are on the road.
You also get a guarantee card and a product passport which shows the inspection date.
The user guide in english is pretty short, but you find the extended one in the description box below.
The package contains two 2600 mAh batteries. You can always charge one while the other one is in use.
You also find a battery charger which is able to load one battery
You can connect it with a mini-usb cable at your PC or a power adapter
The micro USB cable is included, its a fabric braided cable and about 1m long
Furthermore you get a small elastic rubber band which you can use to secure your actioncams.
I really like the insert part of the packaging, everything is packed save for the transport
The gimbal is nicely made with aluminium. There is no plastic like the cheaper ones from other companys.
You can use all smartphones till 6 inches and a width about 82mm.
Its really nice that you can also use your actionscam, like the gopro hero
The rubber grip fits nicely in your hands and is very slip-resistent.
But I'm not sure how long the printed logo will last to it
Experience has shown that printing on rubber does not take too long
But you can buy new rubber grips at notjust4nerds in different colors.
I downloaded the Uoplay app at Googles playStore. You also get it at the AppStore for I-Phone Users.
You get some extra features with the app, which I will show you in this video
First off all I charged the batterys with the included battery charger.
The LED turns from red to green when they are fully charged
You have to remove the bottom part of the grip to insert the battery.
The positive pole (+) comes first
According to manufacturer, the batteries should have 5-6 hours of running time
With my smartphone I reached about 3 hours of running time.
the great advantage with this gimbal is that you can use both: your smartphone and actioncam.
Your device is well protected by the gumming around
even If you want to use your smartphone without a case.
To install your device you have to pull the clamp and hook it above your smartphone
An important point: never run the gimbal without a device
the control elements are very clear
Press the power button for two seconds to start your gimbal. The LED flashes blue.
This is the standby mode.
The motors are inactive right now and the smartphone isn´t balanced.
Especially heavy and big smartphones like mine (Samsung Galaxy S7) needs to be balanced first.
For this, you will loosen the lock screw located on the arm
Move the arm left until the center of gravity is balanced
I really like the scale, so you can do this step by step untill you reach the right point.
If you have adjusted everything correctly your smartphone will settle by itself in the droptest
It doesnt matter If you are doing it from top to bottom or the opposite way.
With a single click on the power button (standby-mode) you run the gimbal
The LED turns red and the three motors are activated.
The arm of the gimbal is now under tension and stabilizes the movements of your smartphone.
With the right Photo-Button you can start or stop your video-shoot or take a picture.
With the joystick on top, you can move your device.
In the app I connect both devices via bluetooth
At the beginning of my product test I walked this way with two smartphones at the same time.
If you ever tryed to film a video while you are walking you probably know how difficult it is to keep your movements still and smooth.
The direct comparison shows the huge difference between filming with an gimbal and without.
Especially when you are walking over steps the video without a gimbal is very shaky
The gimbal stabilizes my movements well. The result is a smooth video with a flying look.
My camera pans look a lot nicer too
Because the gimbal has a long handle, you are able to film nice perspectives near the ground
you don't need a camera dolly or something similar.
You can fly pretty close to other objects which gives a cool look for your film projects
When you are on the road and the batteries are empty you can charge the gimbal with a powerbank
Its possible to load the gimbal while you are filming
I use the included Mini-USB cable
Another nice feature is the charging function for your smartphone.
If you are filming a couple of hours your smartphone needs a lot of energy, especially if your device has a huge display
this feature allowes you to charge your phone with the gimbal batterys
This works during operation
During my product test I also tried the face tracking function
I have to admit that I didn't like this feature
the footage is pretty choppy especially If your movements are faster
the app finds your face only if your head is turned to the camera
Onother feature is the timelapse mode
You can find it in the left menu
Its a nice function to shoot a short clip with moving objects or persons
You can create a unique look for a special moment
I also had the chance to try some seperate accessories

I really liked the tripod because it is small, lightweight and gives a save standing.
You can park the gimbal on almost any ground and do break without removing the device and turn off the gimbal
The tripod has a ball head, so you can adjust the angle
But you can also use your regular tripod, the gimbal has a 1/4 inch thread at the bottom part
I also ordered the remote control which allows you to control your gimbal from a longer distance
Its possible to use the remote control with a distance about 10m
I filmed this 360 degree video with the remote control and the mini tripod
This is another nice feature wich allows you to be part of the video. Like on a wedding or family party.
with a tripple click on the photo-button you start the vertical frame mode
this allows you to shoot videos or take photos in portrait mode
It is important to hold the gimbal as shown here
Otherwise the arm crosses the frame and you can damage the motors
I really like this feature. You can use it for your instagram Videos or live streams.
You also need this mode for your action cams
I've already set-in the GoPro Hero and secured it with the elastic rubber band
When changing from standby to follow mode your action cam is upright
I change the mode again with a triple click , like I´ve already shown
Here you can see some test footage with the GoPro Hero
Through the extreme wide angle your shots get a special look
Especially your tracking shot and pans look dramatic.
for today I've filmed enough but I would like to talk about one last feature: the puffer-turn-off
When you turn the gimbal off the motors are still active for some seconds, so your smartphone doesnt fall down
Cheaper gimbals dont have that feature so your smartphone or action cam can be damaged during the turn off.
For 300€ you get a nicely made gimbal with a very good quality and a lot of different mods.
