What's up you guys my name is RBG and welcome to my video segment Transformers movie universe history
In a previous episode I did a video covering the origins of the young Autobot scout Bumblebee

But anyways let's get back into the main topic
as mentioned in all my videos that I myself am aware of all the hate the Bay...
films received and have to agree that most of the hate is warranted
But I want to take you guys on a journey and show you some of the positives this universe has to offer
Because if we're gonna be honest there are certain characters in the film that don't get that just do
Just a heads up if you haven't seen the movies or read the comic book material used in this video
it will come off a bit spoilers so be advised
In today's episode we'll be uncovering the origins of the merciless assassin turned pacifist, Drift.
After the original wave of secondary Autobots from the first three films were wiped out the bigwigs at Hasbro and Paramount felt it necessary to usher in some new BOTS.
I wasn't really keen on this move since I knew it was only done surely to sell new products
But when I found out that Drift made the cut I was jumping for joy
It's not that often that we get a fresh new addition to the live-action robot cast who's a new addition to the comics
It was not that long ago that this character was introduced shortly after IDW acquisition of the TF comics
Yeah I know the purists are gonna argue that Drift was featured way earlier during the Armada series since the Minicon Dirt Boss was originally named
Drift in the Japanese version
But you know how it goes with Hasbro's western market. Name swaps aren't anything new to the game.
And if the name didn't get dropped in the show it gives creators the perfect opportunity to utilize it later for newer characters
Anyways drift is nothing short of awesome in the Bay films surprisingly enough. He's very similar to his comic book counterpart
I mean yeah from an aesthetic and cultural choice. It's a little off beat from what I know about the character
I can't stress this enough, but I find it completely unnecessary when the movies give well-known Transformers accents that they originally did not have
but Drift is kind of an exception.
If he traveled to earth it's more than likely that he'd adapt the Bushido way of the samurai and the thick Japanese accent works
He kind of puts me in the mind of a robot version of Rurouni Kenshin
A known killer seeking atonement for his action.
Now admittedly Drift has probably been one of the most forced aspects of the IDW Comics since we can't go without seeing him in any of the issues nowadays.
If I recall correctly the chief editor Chris Ryalle has gone on record saying that Drift is to...
Transformers what Wolverine is to the x-men so I guess it kind of makes sense
With that said let's go ahead and slash through the history books and uncover the origins of our noble swordsman
I usually use references and visuals from the comics, but this time around I can't
Unfortunately the official movie prequel comics haven't been active since the dark of the Moon run
The only official comics we have pertaining to Age Of extinction is the Titan movie magazines
But they're exclusive to the UK and to make matters worse there aren't any trade paperbacks available for purchase
And I can't find the digital downloads in stores anywhere, so what I'm gonna. Do is give you a combination of info
I've gathered from the TF wiki website
I usually get info from them in regards to which comic book stories going what order and give my own narrations
But this time around I'm going strictly by what the site says while giving visuals to spruce it up
for my reference I'll be using Titan issue 5.1 entitled "Adrift through and time"
But before we get into that I'd like to throw in a little of Drift's IDW comic history since it's very similar to his bio provided on the back of his toy box and transformers rise of the dark spark video game
Before the Cybertron war Drift was the unaligned robot
He was homeless doing whatever he could to survive even if it meant stealing Energon
the hopeless bot was befriended by Gasquet
another homeless Cybertronian who remained optimistic and charismatic in spite of the circumstances
During one drug trip in a place called the Dead End he was assaulted by two Robots, Sonic and Boom who are abducting homeless people for money
Drift was rescued by Orion Pax who brought him to ratchet secret clinic in Rodion
Ratchet saved Drift's life and told the young robot that he could achieve great things in life if he tried
he could just tell the drift was testing for something special
And Drift would learn soon what that special something was after Gasket was killed by Autobot law-enforcement after trying to stop them from executing a thief
Drift exploded with rage, grabbed the nearest gun and killed them all.
In the midst of this race Drift found he was good at beating people up. his knack for violence attracted the attention of the Cybertronian underground who trained Drift as a killer
Amongst this group Drift realized that level of corruption in the senate
and a recruitment rally held by Megatron drew drift in with his talk of equality
During this big speech Megatron singled Drift out of the crowd
claiming to have heard great things of him and asked him to join the Decepticon fight for a better Cybertron
Drift agreed and after being held by the crowd was renamed Deadlock by Megatron
Eventually he rose to become his second-in-command of Turmoil garnering a reputation as a vicious and merciless killer
Sometime later on the planet Ebola
Deadlock led a battalion against an Autobot squad the Autobots leader called a retreat and Deadlock's team celebrated
This was spoiled when one of the soldiers pointed out that Deadlock had been ordered to merely observe and once again had disobeyed orders
When he soldier threatened to inform Turmoil of Deadlock's disobedience Deadlock killed him claiming turn world was too cautious and that it was time for new leadership
He called for the other soldiers to follow him
But they summarily captured him and brought him to Turmoil
Turmoil used a stasis lock to trap him in robot mode and attempted to execute him
But Deadlock managed to escape and after initiating an emergency protocol to cover his escape stole an escape pod and departed the ship
He crashed on an unknown planet after scaling some he founded massive structure
But before he could explore a mysterious cloaked figure appeared named Wing.
Wing offered a deal...
help him free the slaves and he would find Deadlock of ship deadlock introducing himself as Drift agreed
But first Drift said that he needed guns.
Together they jumped some guards and stole their weapons however a stray blast stripped Wing of his cloak revealing him to be Cybertronian
Once they jumped into the complex Drift automatically fled for the ship abandoning Wing
Despite this betrayal when Drift was attacked and nearly killed by one of the slavers, Wing brought truth back with him to a new Crystal City where he was repaired.
Wing explained that they were the Circle of Light.
A group of Cybertronian scholars and scientists who abandoned the planet during the early days of the war in order to find peace and preserve Cybertron's culture.
Wing later takes drift to Dai Atlas
One of the old Cybertronians dating back to the era of Nova prime 8 million years ago
He was angered that Wing brought a Decepticon among them and threatened to never let Drift leave
Wing then steps forward putting his own reputation on the line and stands up to Dai Atlas
He began training Drift in an unknown Cybertronian martial arts
the techniques appeared very reminiscent to what the Autobots called Diffusion
a style of combat designed to stop an opponent without causing any serious irreparable damage similar to urged Tai Chi Chun
Which is decided to use an attackers energy against them mixed with kendo
It is unknown how long Drift trains
but he apparently becomes very skilled in the use of his short swords in hand-to-hand combat
Wing offered a chance to earn freedom by defeating him without guns in combat but Drift never succeeded
Drift grumbled that he'd never learned to fight without protect our weaponry. Weeks later Wang was still a dominating Drift
Over time Drift admitted to wing that crystal city held everything he had ever wanted
while the Decepticons had lost sight of this goal some time ago. Their sparring was interrupted by a summer from die Atlas
When they arrived in the control room he informed them that they had received a coded signal
and he thought Drift might be able to translate. Though drift claimed he could not understand it
That night he snuck out of the city and drove far into the desert.
There he met with the slavers who had used the Decepticon code to offer Drift a deal
The code had been obtained from Lockdown. A Decepticon sent by Megatron the deal was simple handover the location of the Circle of Light or die.
Lockdown reminded Deadlock of his high standing in the Decepticon army.
Megatron held Deadlock in high esteem and by guarding these Transformers Drift stood to lose that
Meanwhile the head slaver Braid required Cybertronian bodies to experiment on and were willing to take captives from neutral camp in lieu of
Deadlock in payment for property he had damaged earlier
After agreeing to lead the neutral transformers into an ambush
Drift stumbled back to Crystal City where he informed the Circle of Light about the pact
he had made with Lockdown in these slavers drift argued that they should fight their attackers to preserve their freedom and their way of life
But died Atlas strongly disagreed
He would have no fighting at all evening to preserve his own life and blamed riff for ruining their
Civilization the others did not agree and support it drift a smaller number of them
To help fight the slavers while keeping the true number of their population unknown
As they reached the surface with a hastily constructed crowd to make it appear as if the circlet light had recently crashed their drive revealed
Himself to have been rebuilt head to toe to match his new colleagues with a sword mounted on each hip drif announced
He was ready soon locked down and his Labor's were upon them
After slaying a few of the slavers drift realized that he was past the point of no return
Lockdown and realized this as well
And that's the former Decepticon why he'd given it all away so easily
And jerf responded saying what I've always wanted the promise of a better Cybertron
But their Spartan was interrupted by the death of wind and raised drift jump braid, but he did not accomplish much
He was not as agile as a fighter as his late friend and braid easily defeated him before the killing blow could be delivered Crystal
City and its entirety rose from the ground as Wings death that spurred diet listen to action with the entirety of the
Population now fighting the slavers the tide was quickly turned despite his injuries drove slew braids with his great sword
While lockdown started at drift transformation cut his losses and left
Though the circle of light asked ruff to stay with them
Jeff reminded them that he promised winged to return the freed slaves to their homes as a gift
drift was given when his great sword these swords were extremely powerful drawing the power from the will to spark to a connection born of
Said welders faith a Nexus mounted on the weapons hilt siphons energy from the owners spark
Which named energized the blade the stronger their faith the more powerful this sword becomes
Because of this the weapon is only used as a last resort as it can potentially result in the worldís death
When Jeff returned to the trench former work to make right what he put wrong he was about a few words in discipline action he?
Since went on to be an enthusiastic
Spiritualist and a self punishing Crusader all in an attempt to get away from the nasty parts of his
Personality that are still lurking within him but to most it didn't matter what his personality was like now
Because of his Decepticon past he wasn't well liked or trusted by few of the Autobots and some of the Decepticons that think he was
Just lying about having changed this history more than you might think because at the end of the day despite his loner attitude
Drif really just wanted to be part of something
Fast forward to the climax of the war drift would leave Cybertron for earth and migrate to Japan
He admired everything about the culture from the cherry blossom petals to the rice
Sun-hee would start using forms of Japanese port she called haiku to keep his spark at peace
Five years before the Battle of Chicago drift had returned to Cybertron leaving a three Khan team with his friend knucklehead and unfortunately lockdown
While drift wanted to take him out about outpost with minimal bloodshed
Lockdown thought this was sissy hippy crap and that they should just bomb everything
Even though that would mean having no outpost to capture her pointed out why Megatron put them in charge
So they'd have something left to rule
so the three of them snuck off the wall surprise two out about guards and with martial arts kill they decide what everyone without a
shot being fired
but that's when lockdown decided that he wanted to go ahead and let out a couple of pops but drift stopped Lucknow giving him a
Chance to claim the guy was a traitor and killed him off
No coherent drip set him down into a molten moat swearing revenge on them both of course
He couldn't actually kill them while Megatron was still in charge or the big boss would be unhappy drift
Then let the prisoners retreat with their wounded and was told that he'd make a fine Autobot
By the time of Chicago he had indeed switched sides
And he was annoyed to be cleaning up the art debris on the moon instead of tracking down remaining Decepticons
Optimus was bemused at drift was so eager to fight with his former allies by this time locked down now in his old body immediately
Murdered knucklehead as soon as Megatron died
While grousing that the arc was their last memories of Cybertron laid waste the samurai was horrified to find knuckleheads corpse
It was third that he had realized how powerful lockdown had become
Jeff made a grave for his fallen friend and prime told him that they'd stand against lockdown together and
That my friends is what the story ends as we know drifts new partnership with Optimus and the Autobots would be put on hold
Thanks in part to cemetery win him and his new group of friends would have to go into hiding later
They will regroup in the rest is history
I hope you enjoyed this origin story of a trip because I did everything I could to piece up his backstory as I mentioned earlier
I really enjoyed this version of the Autobot samurai
I think it's brilliant that the movies described him as being this manic who doesn't like to be snuck up on due to how
war-torn
He is but I do wish the films would give a little bit of his past whether it be through his dialog or interactions with
Decepticons the casual viewers not gonna know that he was a former baddie unless someone tells them maybe we'll get a glimpse of that backstory
New expanded cinematic universe since they seem to be going back to the Transformers roots, but anyways
