It's winter! It's cold as hell. I can hear the wind BRR!
but it's great for conversation, and you're going to learn a whole bunch of
vocabulary! and if you want a whole bunch more general weather vocabulary, click
this video! By the way these videos are a group effort. I'm the person you see, but
it's my patrons who make these videos possible by supporting For Your English!
the first 20 patrons will get a Skype call with.. me! and we're almost halfway
there. then, when we reach'a 50 or is it– is it this way>
50!? we will start doing two live videos each and every week. become a patron and
join the For Your English team, so I can continue to make better videos! but let's
get back to the cold cold winter! today it's winter activities vocabulary, and
let's start by talking about the fun stuff! to go sledding! you do this on a
hill. a hill is smaller than a mountain, and when you're going down we say to go
down the hill. you can also sled on a snow tube. and to be specific, you can say
to go tubing or to go snow tubing! "yo dude, what's up? we went sledding yesterday
after it snowed" "oh yeah? how was it? Oh a lot of fun until we broke the sled" "yeah
that's why I prefer to go tubing instead of sledding" that was on a hill, but now
let's talk about some fun things you can do on a mountain. you can go skiing or
snowboarding. unless if you cross-country ski. cross country skiing is done on
flatland, not on the mountain! the part of the mountain that you can do these
activities on is called the slopes. it's a collective term for all of the
different runs, difficulties and paths to get down. and one specific path down is
called, a run. the difficulties are often designated or shown with different
shapes and colors. another way of saying to go skiing or snowboarding is to say
"to hit up the slopes" "yo what's up, dude? is gonna be snowing all weekend. you want
to hit up the slopes?" "definitely
I haven't skied at all this year" some people like to ice skate, or go
ice-skating, and you do this on frozen water. you use your ice skates, or just
skates, to do this. the place that you ice skate is called the ice rink. they can be
both indoor and outdoor. but other people just prefer to drive around in the
nature. they probably do this with a snowmobile. we call this to go
snowmobiling. you can do this on a trail or over the frozen lake. what else can
you do you ask on a frozen lake? well I will tell you! you can go ice fishing. you
drill a hole through the ice and you stay warm by putting up a shanty, an ice
shanty to keep you warm and to cover the ice hole. in the middle of the winter
when the lake is very frozen, a lot of people will have races. so you bring your
cars onto the lake and you have ice races! other fun activities you can just
do anywhere where there is snow: like making snow angels, making a snowman, or
having a snowball fight. biggest biggest most important piece of advice if you
have no experience playing in the snow! avoid the yellow snow! It's pee! It's pee. That's
why it's yellow. dogs pee in it. these were all the fun winter activities, but what
about the chores, the work that you have to do around the house? after it snows,
you have to remove all of it from your driveway, where you put your car, and the
sidewalk, where people walk in front of your house, to do this you shovel! in
order to shovel, you need a shovel. shoveling can take a long time, though,
especially if there's heavy snowfall. that's why many people have snowblowers.
it blows the snow off of the driveway and off of the sidewalk, but we still
have the snow on the roads. but you don't have to worry about this. the city
provides snow plows. the snow plow is a big truck with a plow on front of it
that pushes, or plows, the snow to the side of the road. the verbs make some of
these activities tricky to talk about! so tell me about your favorite
activity, any questions you have, or any other comments! happy holidays
