Bicycle carving found in 2000-year-old Trichy temple | With subtitles - Duration: 8:44.

In this episode of Trichy 360, we've come to a place that's got a lot of attention on social media, even outside of India

Let's find out more about it!

Today we've come to the Panchavarnaswamy Temple...

This carving, that of a bicycle, has catapulted the temple into limelight again

The whole world is talking about it

'How is it possible to have a carving of a bicycle in a temple that's really old?'

So, what's special about the carving, you ask?

It's not just this carving; the temple has many other significance features

I'll list it out one by one. I'm sure you're going to be surprised!

Saint Tirugnana Sambandar had praised the Lord of the temple in his hymns

Woraiyur, where this temple is located, also has another name -- thirumookhicharam

There's a lot of history to this place and temple, and they're very interesting

This place has a lot of names

However, everyone identifies this place as Woraiyur (meaning 'the residence' in Tamil)

But did you know that this place is also called Kozhiyur?

You might wonder why it's called Kozhiyur, given that there are already a lot of names to this place

The name was given by Saint Tirugnana Sambandar who praised the Lord of the temple in his hymns

Here's a story: One day a Chola King was traveling through this town

Suddenly, the elephant on which he was traveling went on a rampage

Afraid of the animal, his security personnel could only watch it going out of control

The king prayed his heart out, which resulted in God taking the form of a rooster

and controlling the elephant by attacking the animal's head with its beak

This is why the place is also called Kozhiyur (Kozhi means rooster in Tamil)

This temple is also considered the birth place of Pugazh Chola Nayanar.

Here are the other important things about the temple

There are three days which are celebrated and are of great significance to the temple

1. The 10-day Vaikasi Visagam festival

2. A festival to commemorate the great sage Udangar is celebrated in the Tamil month of Aani

3. In Tamil month of Aadi, on Pournami (day of full moon), 'pancha prahara thiruvizha' is celebrated

The celebration are in honour of Saint Udangar. Here's some interesting information about the Saint.

Saint Udangar is celebrated in this temple in the Tamil month of Aadi

Saint Udangar marries a woman, who in her earlier life, had stolen/disgraced the garments and idols of Lord Shiva

Soon after, the woman died of a crocodile attack while she was taking bath in a river

The Saint later realized that she was at the receiving end of what she once did to Lord Shiva

Shocked by what he saw, the Saint lost his sanity

But a voice asks him to continue his journey and the Saint visits multiple temples on his way

But he chose to worship his Lord in this temple

The Lord appeared in front of him in five colours

That's the reason behind the name of the deity - Panchavarneswarar (translates to five-coloured God)

People here recreate the scene of the Lord appearing before Saint Udangar every Aadi Pournami

The other significance of the temple is the 'teppakulam'

The well is considered to purify the soul and cleanse your actions and past deeds

A boy once had spoken ill about the sacred ash and was cursed by a Saint

The boy was transformed into a pig. Here's where he was liberated from his curse

Here's a Bilva tree to our side

On the other side, we can see people being offered 'Anna Dhaanam'

The sculptures and statues in the temple are extraordinary

The carvings on the temple pillars depict the Tamil way of life, its traditions and its customs

Here's one: There's one showing warriors, all woman, forming a horse chariot-like...

...and there's a woman who's fighting with bows and arrows on top of them

Similarly, there's another one showing an elephant chariot

Again, one made by women and another standing on top and fighting with an arrow

It reflects the kind of importance we gave for art and culture

Actually, the entire temple seems to a work of art - be it the different sculptures, the way light enters the temple or its architecture

But there's one more that's caught everyone's attention...

This one is really surprising

There's a carving of a man riding a bicycle here

It is really mind-boggling that this sculpture has been found here

The whole world now wants to know more about it

And, we thought it would be apt to help people discover more about this temple

The temple can easily be reached from 'Kadai veethi' bus stop. It's only a 5-minute walk away from the bus stop

Do visit the temple and soak in the rich history of the place

Hope you liked our video and the history of the place

Until the next Trichy 360, here's RJ Prabhu signing off

María Rebeca Latigo de Hernández: 5 Fast Facts to Know | Heavy.com - Duration: 7:54.

María Rebeca Latigo de Hernández: 5 Fast Facts to Know | Heavy.com

María Rebeca Latigo de Hernández, the civil rights leader who helped advance the rights of Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants, has been honored with a Google Doodle on what would have been her 122nd birthday.

She is also sometimes known as Maria L.

de Hernández.

The July 29, 2018 Google Doodle was designed to illustrate Hernández "doing what she did best – using her voice to elevate and benefit her community," Google wrote.

U.S. Representative Henry B.

Gonzales once said, "She fought a big fight with a little stick.".

Here's what you need to know:.

María Rebeca Latigo de Hernández Was Born in Mexico and Moved to San Antonio, Texas.

Hernández was born in Garza García, near Monterrey, Mexico in 1896, according to Google.

She was an immigrant, moving to San Antonio, Texas, "where she became one of the leading voices speaking against economic discrimination and educational segregation that was faced primarily by women and children of Mexican descent.".

According to DevDiscourse, Hernández was an elementary school teacher in Monterrey, Mexico before moving to Texas "during the chaos of the Mexican Revolution," along with many others.

She and her husband, Pedro Hernandez Barrera, ran a grocery store and bakery in San Antonio, where they moved in 1918, DevDiscourse reports.

Her father was a professor.

According to The Texas State Historical Association, her parents were named Eduardo Frausto and Francisca (Medrano) Latigo.

Hernández Was San Antonio's First Female Mexican-American Radio Announcer.

Hernández literally took her voice to the masses using a new medium: Radio.

"In addition to being a powerful organizer, Hernández was also a talented orator: she became San Antonio's first Mexican American female radio announcer, and spent much of the rest of her life speaking up against injustice and inequality across both the Mexican and African American communities," Google notes.

According to the Sun, she was also a regular on Texas television, advancing the rights of Mexican immigrants.

She was described as an "untiring fighter" for the rights of Mexican-Americans.

Hernández Started an Organization to Educate Mexican-Americans About Their Rights.

Hernández was many things; she was also a community organizer who believed in the importance of education.

Among her many contributions, "she co-founded the Orden Caballeros de America (Order of the Knights of America) – a benefit society dedicated to educating Mexican Americans about their rights," according to Google.

She founded the group with Pedro Hernandez Barrera, her husband, on January 10, 1929.

"She also helped organize the Asociación Protectora de Madres (Association for the Protection of Mothers) which provided financial aid to expectant mothers and La Liga de Defensa Pro-Escolar (The School Defense League) which fought to replace segregated educational facilities," Google wrote.

La Liga de Defensa Pro-Escolar was an organization "dedicated to obtaining better facilities and better education for the West Side Mexican community," according to The Texas State Historical Association.

Hernández Was a Mother of 10 Children.

Hernández and her husband had 10 children together.

Several of their children died in infancy, however.

She died of pneumonia in 1989.

She was 86.

She authored an essay called "México y Los Cuatro Poderes Que Dirigén al Pueblo," which, according to the Texas State Historical Association, highlighted the importance of mothers and the domestic sphere.

She insisted on using the Spanish language in her essays, resisting the trend of assimilation.

She also served as a midwife for those who couldn't afford medical care.

Hernández Fought for Workers' & Students' Rights.

   .

The activist was also involved in workers' rights protests.

In 1938, "she took up the cause of workers' rights in the Pecan-Shellers' Strike," according to the Texas State Historical Association.

In 1939, she visited Mexican president Lázaro Cárdenas "to express good will between Mexico and the Mexicans in the United States," the site reports.

She was also concerned about inequality in the classroom, noting inequities faced by Mexican-American children, who often had classrooms without heat and higher student-teacher ratios than non immigrant children.

"The students are not at fault for being born with black eyes and brown hair and not with blue eyes.

We are all supported by the stripes and stars of the flag," she once said.

"I want you to take this gesture of this community as a protest and disgust over the terrible conditions.".
