LG has lost a lot of its influence over the smartphone industry through years of declining

sales and profits, even as the rest of the industry achieved record growth.

To fix these issues, the mobile division now has a new president

And I went to Seoul, South Korea, to talk to a bunch of people from to see

how they plan to turn these negative trends around.

I'm Marton from TechAltar, you are watching the 34th episode of The Story Behind series,

and here's what I've found.

OK, before we start with the strategy, I really have to put LG's phones into context a little,

because I think we smartphone enthusiasts fundamentally get its scale wrong.

LG smartphones make up about 80 to 90% of LG's mobile communications business unit.

The rest is mostly audio products, wearables, and accessories.

This is one of five business units in a company called LG Electronics and last quarter it

was responsible for about 18% of its revenue.

Most of LG Electronics' revenue comes from home electronics like fridges, washing machines

and TVs, but they also sell things like Vehicle components.

And then LG Electronics is only one of many companies under the LG Corporation umbrella,

although it is the largest one, with about 40-50% of the revenues.

So overall, smartphones only make up somewhere between 5 to 9% of the total revenue of the

giant conglomerate known as LG Corporation.

Geographically, LG's two most important markets by far are North America and South Korea.

North America moves the most units, accounting for well over a third of LG's total shipments,

but here LG mainly sells lower end units with low prices and low margins.

In Korea it's the opposite: LG sells fewer phones, but most of them are flagships, and

therefore LG is more profitable here, accounting for over a third of LG's mobile revenue.

Talking of revenue, it has decreased for the company's mobile division by more than 20%

over the last five years, even though the market itself grew quite quickly.

Things aren't looking great.

Profitability seems even worse, where LG has been losing money for over 3 straight years

now as well.

2016 was their worst year, when the LG G5 performed spectacularly badly, and even before

that, LG's quality control problems, together with the increased competition from China

really put LG into a tough spot.

OK, so that's a super quick overview, and I think it's pretty clear that things have

to change for LG if it wants to turn things around.

Which the new president apparently wants to do.

So I talked to a bunch of people at LG, here are all the plans they would share with me.

Starting with products, there are two clear directions.

One is a returned focus on the basics, which they defined as ABCD.

Audio, Battery, Cameras and Displays.

LG will apparently stop focusing on being the first to bring random, risky technologies

to market, like modular designs or curved screens, which LG has done quite often in

the past, and will instead simply make sure that LG phones perform well in these core

areas.

Other companies like Samsung and OPPO had a similar change in mentality a few years

ago, and while we enthusiasts might prefer more experimental companies, it sort of makes

sense because smartphones are becoming a commodity and nowadays there is so little room for meaningful

differentiation now anyway.

The G7, which you can see my thoughts on right here, is a pretty good example of this new

strategy.

It's just an evolution of the G6, not something radically new.

Also a part of this push for fixing the basics is an increased focus on software updates,

which LG says they opened a dedicated new software development center for.

They claim to push for more consistent and faster updates in the future, which was definitely

one of LG's weaknesses so far, although we haven't seen any proof of that just yet.

ThinQ branded artificial intelligence enhancements are supposed to give LG devices a differentiation

going forward, but for now I've found LG's actual AI capabilities fairly unimpressive.

Mostly just AI based scene detection and image enhancements in cameras, and sadly nothing

LG told me about their future plans really seemed like a breakthrough, but I guess only

time will tell how far they can push with AI.

In terms of marketing, LG told me that the promotional budget of LG Electronics as a whole

was mostly focused on on promoting OLED and 4K LG TVs, but since they

have gained enough market share in those categories, they will start prioritizing mobile phones

this year.

LG signed up BTS, Korea's most popular boyband to promote phones starting with the G7.

LG claims that this is their most expensive advertisement deal to date, and while it won't

do much for them in, say, Europe, it could give them a nice boost in Asia and to some

extent in the US, which, as you might remember, is where LG actually makes money.

Over the last few years, LG's marketing was fairly weak and got drowned out by more aggressive

brands like Samsung, Apple and Huawei though, so we will have to wait and see how hard they

really push this year.

LG's most counterintuitive and interesting strategy though might just be to wait.

Given that since 2017, the global smartphone market has stopped growing for the first time

ever, and given that most smartphone makers still aren't profitable, smaller and weaker

companies are soon expected to either go bankrupt or get bought by larger, more wealthy ones.

Consolidation is kind of inevitable.

Just think of HTC, which is being sliced up by Google, Nextbit, which was bought by Razer,

or smaller Chinese companies like Gionee and Meizu, which are slowly losing market share.

And given that LG is a large, diversified conglomerate, it can simply afford to wait

until the competition bleeds out.

While outlasting competitors, isn't the sexiest strategy, it might actually work for LG.

OK, so those are all of their plans.

How do I feel about them?

Well, a little mixed.

First, I think a focus on the ABCD basics plus better software support is going into

the right direction.

I don't see spectacular battery life improvements or or fantastic software support from the LG G7 yet, but let's

give this new mobile president a little bit of time.

I also find it a little hard to imagine what LG could meaningfully do better in AI

than Google, who owns the OS, or Samsung, who at least has more users and money couldn't do

but I guess more AI and better AI on LG phones won't hurt either.

So, the product strategy, while not groundbreaking, is generally going into the right direction.

But the rest, I'm not so sure about.

See, a good place for a brand to be is either on the premium end, like Samsung and Apple,

or on the value end, like OnePlus and Xiaomi.

Both are perfectly valid business models.

Obviously to sustain a premium brand you need a sales, marketing and customer support structure

that convinces people that your products are worth the premium.

On the budget end, you can save on, most, of those and you can offer your devices for

less.

LG though, falls into this uncomfortable zone between the two.

They kind of want to appear premium, so they spend some money on these extras, but don't

commit to them fully, so consumers don't want to pay the premium prices.

Just look at their prices over time.

Here's the G6 on Amazon.

It's priced like a premium product at launch, rivaling the latest Galaxy phones, but then

gets discounted dramatically pretty much straight away, and in a few months it becomes a value

phone.

And it's a very similar story for other LG flagships.

I bought my G6, just 3 months after it was announced, for something like 380 Euros.

That's pretty much half price and this is a problem, because LG has to spend money like a premium brand,

but eventually sells phones with margins like a value brand.

This is obviously not a good business model, and LG really has to decide, at least in my opinion,

what they want to be.

If they want a premium brand, they should make a premium product and push it

just as hard as Samsung does.

If they are OK being a value brand, they should skip all the BS and start pricing

their phones like value phones right from the start.

To this end, LG telling us that they are finally taking mobile marketing a little more seriously could be

a good sign that they are actually becoming a premium brand,

but given their track record, I am a little doubtful.

The saving grace for LG for at least the next few years might come from the US government

being aggressive against ZTE and Huawei.

The US is LG's largest market by sales, and especially ZTE was already catching up with

them in fourth place, but with the recent tensions, LG might get a temporary pass.

So, really good timing for them!

But anyway, I am somewhat torn on LG's future overall.

They are still losing money, but the worst sales and profit declines seem to be over,

their device strategy is finally starting to mature, but they are focusing on a confusing

AI strategy, they finally say they will take marketing seriously, but none of their past

efforts suggest that they will succeed, and while LG certainly can afford to lose money

on smartphones until smaller competitors bleed out, or get banned, I don't see the fire,

the aggressiveness that other brands like Samsung or more recently, Chinese competitors

seem to have.

See, I can't really predict if LG will be able to turn its mobile business around, but I can

recommend a really, really, really good audiobook.

The Malazan Book of the fallen is my absolute favourite audiobook ever, and if you like

epic stories like the Lord of the Rings or the Game of Thrones series,

LaLiga Santander Postseason: August - Duration: 5:21.

Just like every other summer, LaLiga started out with new faces, and renewed hopes for all the teams in the championship.

For the second year in a row, the main player in the transfer market was Barcelona FC.

They invested more money than anyone else in their attempt to regain the Spanish league title.

Their boldest outlay was the 105 million euros shelled out in order to get the signature of the youn g Ousmane Dembele.

"I'm really happy to be playing with the best players for the best team in the world.

My aim is to settle in as soon as possible and to learn from the best players in the world like Luis Suarez

and Leo Messi. I also want to work as hard as I can to win the most titles possible"

The defending champions, Real Madrid, concentrated on Spanish players,

signing the likes of Marcos Llorente, Dani Ceballos and Theo Hernandez.

Other big clubs like Sevilla and Marcelino Garcia Toral's revamped Valencia made some interesting forays into the transfer market.

The start of the campaign did not disappoint; Matchday 1 featured the first surprise of the campaign.

Making their debut in the top flight, Girona, had the great Atletico Madrid up against the ropes.

Despite a last gasp equaliser to make it 2-2 and rescue a point for Los Colchoneros,

Pablo Machin's side showed great promise from their very first match of the season.

"This club is here to compete, that's our prime objective and today we managed it. We competed really well

against an opponent who are in the Champions League. It was a good debut but we've only just begun, we've got to keep working hard"

Real Sociedad, Barça and Leganes were the only three teams to pick up all six points from the August games.

The team from San Sebastian made a great comeback at the Balaidos stadium and also beat Villarreal convincingly on

the day Xabi Prieto celebrated, with a goal, his five hundredth appearance in a Txuri Urdin shirt.

Leganes, came away with narrow victories from their games against Alaves and their visit to the RCDE Stadium.

Meanwhile Ernesto Valverde's new Barcelona showed their quality right

from the off with convincing wins against Real Betis and Deportivo Alaves.

Real Madrid, started out their campaign by thrashing Deportivo away from home.

But on Matchday 2, having been presented with the trophy for winning the previous season's championship,

slipped-up at the Santiago Bernabeu against Valencia. The match ended 2-2,

an early glimpse of the great season the team from the Mestalla was about to have.

The month of August ended with Real Sociedad on top of the table thanks to goal difference, and with two of

the recently promoted clubs, Girona and Levante among the leading pack. At the other end of the table,

five teams had lost both their games. Among them, Las Palmas, who after their 5-1 home defeat to Atletico Madrid,

were now the bottom club in LaLiga.

Hot, much like summer _ 052818 - Duration: 1:43.

Hello, I'm Michelle Park here with the latest weather update.

It's the last Monday of May,... and you can definitely tell by the hot weather that summer

is right around the corner.

The weather is already this hot, I wonder how hot it'll get in our actual summer months.

Unlike the rest of the nation, Jeju and the southern regions are currently under cloudy

skies ,... with light showers of less than 5 millimeters expected.

Tomorrow's weather won't be too different from today, other than a few more clouds.

The whole country will be exposed to high UV rays again so try to stay safe when under

the sun.

Taking a look at our readings for tomorrow,...

Seoul will wake up to 18 degrees Celsius, Daegu and Gyeongju begin at 18 and 17 degrees.

The daily high in Seoul will hit 25 degrees, while Gwangju and Busan peak at 29 and 24

degrees.

After tomorrow, the country will be under sunnier skies with hotter highs during the

day.

I'll leave you with the weather conditions around the world.

North Korea, U.S. hold preparatory meetings for Kim-Trump summit - Duration: 2:44.

North Korea and the U.S. appear to be back at work making preparations for their summit.

Already a number of working-level talks are held between the two sides.

Lee Ji-won zooms in on what could be covered during these meetings.

It's the second day of secretive meetings between the U.S. and North Korea on the northern

side of Panmunjom.

The delegations are reportedly led by the former U.S. ambassador to South Korea and

former nuclear negotiator, Sung Kim,... and from North Korea, Choe Son-hui, the regime's

vice foreign minister and a former director of her ministry's North American department.

Both are experts in their fields, so it's expected that they'll discuss the agenda and

details of the Pyongyang-Washington summit, including North Korea's denuclearization and

a security guarantee for the regime.

In fact, South Korea's Yonhap news cited a foreign affairs source, reporting that the

talks will center on how both sides see and define "denuclearization."

Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported Monday, citing U.S. officials,... that Washington

is asking Pyongyang to first transfer the 20 nuclear warheads it is believed to have...

to somewhere outside of its borders as soon as possible.

This is in line with what White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said a few weeks

ago when he suggested that North Korea's nuclear weapons be dismantled and shipped to Oak Ridge,

Tennessee, as was done in his preferred "Libya model."

But some also say that the talks could depart from the Libya model, Trump having said he

would not take that approach,... and instead focus on his "Trump model."

This could mean the North counter-proposes that it first give up its inter-continental

ballistic missiles,... the weapons that would theoretically enable it to strike the U.S..

Trump last week had also, for the first time, hinted at the possibility of accepting a "phased-in"

disarmament for North Korea.

Meanwhile, as confirmed by White House press Secretary Sarah Sanders, an advance team of

White House and State Department officials, reportedly led by Deputy chief of staff Joe

Hagin, is believed to have left for Singapore on Sunday to prepare for the Kim-Trump summit.

And a high-ranking North Korean official, Kim Chang-son, who heads the regime's State

Affairs Commission Secretariat, appears to have gone to Singapore as Hagin's counterpart.

The North's delegation was spotted in Beijing airport Monday morning, and is believed to

have taken a Singapore flight in the afternoon, according to local sources.

And since the two sides are meeting in the city-state that'll host the possible summit,

it's expected that they'll discuss protocol and details of the schedule.

How To Treat Diaper Rash Fast | Best Homemade Diaper Rash Cream (INDIAN VILLAGE ASMR VIDEO) - Duration: 3:11.

Hi friends this is Ramya from wildturmeric. In this video, I wanted to share

a clinically proven homemade diaper rash cream that helps start 93% of wound

healing in the first 6 hours of application. Able to heal diaper rash

with a simple homemade rash cream equal to prescription medication is amazing!

This cream is very gentle to be used on baby's skin and has no side effects at all.

I will leave the link to the research paper supporting these claims in the

description box below.

The first ingredient we need is bentonite clay. It's a healing clay got from the ash of volcanoes. Calendula extract is supposed

to be the most effective for diaper rash but bentonite clay has been proven to be

even more effective than calendula, this is because it draws out toxins very

effectively thus helping in very fast wound healing. You can buy bentonite clay

through online shops. I would suggest using only bentonite clay for best results.

The second ingredient we need is aloe vera juice, to make aloe vera juice

cut the leaf of an aloe vera plant. Wash, pat dry and remove the thorns on both

sides of the leaf. Now cut in half, scoop out the flesh and grind in a mixer

without adding any water to get a smooth juice. Aloe vera juice spoils very soon

but one amazing thing about this cream is when Aloe Vera juice is mixed with the

clay it does not spoil for three days if left at room temperature and don't use

store-bought Aloe Vera gel, it does not mix well with the clay and it is always

best to use fresh aloe vera juice. Aloe Vera helps heal the wound very fast.

The last ingredient we need is lavender oil. Lavender essential oil has

anti-inflammatory properties that helps bring down the inflammation and is very

very healing. You can order lavender essential oil easily through online shops.

I wanted to make this recipe into an ASMR video. We were going

through a very severe drought but now it has rained and the whole village looks

green and beautiful. We have these beautiful yellow flowers popping all over

the farm and I have taken this video using them as a background.

You can store this cream at room temperature for two to three days but it

is best to make it fresh every day. To use, apply a thin layer of this cream on

the affected area twice daily wash it off after an hour or two.

I hope you found this video useful. If you like to support me and this channel, please share this video

with your friends, it'll mean a lot to me. If you like to get detailed information

on herbs on days I don't post videos, press the notification button. Thank you

Why Lose More Belly Fat Fast By Squats. ( without a sore muscle of belly. ) - Duration: 5:56.

I am Takaine from MuscleWatching.

Squats is very effective for losing belly fat.

Why dose squatting lose belly fat?

Some people say that squatting dose not work on belly.

Squats does not make sore muscle on your belly,

but it can lose belly fat.

So, it is great!

There is some misunderstanding.

They say that squatting makes sore muscle on my belly,

because of sore muscle, I lose belly fat.

There is a person interpreting like this, it is a mistake.

There are various ways to do that.

Depending on the way, the belly may become a sore muscle.

However, as a reason why the squat is effective to lose the belly fat,

The lower body's muscle is so big.

By training big muscles, calories burned and basal metabolism will boost.

So, when I thought about training something today,

I do squats, because it is effective and efficient.

For example, Push-up and Pull-up,

These are very hard,

There are not so many muscles to use.

In the case of women, that can not be done physically.

The hard workout is not necessarily effective.

Many people often confuse 'hard work' and 'effective'.

Athlete training, Bodybuilding training,

It is not good for ordinary people. There is a different and better way for ordinary people.

If you are ordinary people, you do not necessary too much hard work.

I think that the hard work for the sportsman is good because it feels refreshing.

In case of dislike of exercise,

they want to do no equipment

I think that it is almost of the world population

I recommend that they mainly squat at home.

Radio exercise diet series is popular in my channel

It looks very easy at first glance.

Do it once, you make sense

You have been sweating a lot.

you can know that you do not use many muscle.

if you can use effectively muscle, the too much hard work is not necessary.

in case of people who dislike exercise they can lose belly fat by mainly squats at home.

How many times should I do?

When I am sore muscle how I should do?

you might have also many question

I have been published exercise videos since 11 years ago,

the most popular and effective exercise in my channel is 10 minutes workout.

you should do 10 min workout.

My 10 min workout series is over 100 videos.

you can choose favorite one.

if you are made lower body sore muscle, you should do upper body workout.

you can do repeat it,

or if you have sore muscle, also you can do the stretch.

As a rule, you should rest sore muscle parts.

you can do workout except parts of sore muscle.

you can do also aerobic exercise or stretch.

if you have any question, you write a comment.

I reply only very good ask.

I reply that only very good question of right after this video published.

if you have any question, you should ask right after publised a video.

Summary, Squats does not make sore muscle of your belly.

But you may make sore muscle of your belly depending on the squats way.

if you try keep attention in belly, you may make sore muscle of belly.

However basically, the reason why fat of belly is lost by squat is due to boost of basal metabolism and boost of calories.

that's all!

Natural Blood Thinners that Prevent Blood Clots - Duration: 3:29.

Doctors prescribe blood thinners for numerous reasons

It might be because you suffer from a heart or cardiovascular disease

an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation or a congenital heart defect.

Or perhaps you've had a heart valve replacement or you're at risk of blood clots occurring after having surgery.

Blood thinners are medicines that prevent blood clots from forming

and help blood flow smoothly through your veins and arteries.

As the name suggests, these prescribed medicines don't actually make your blood thinner or break up clots

These medicines help keep your blood from getting thicker and forming new clots.

They can also slow the growth of existing ones, thus reducing your risk of dangerous clots.

While blood thinners are helpful in many ways, they can also cause side effects in some people

Excessive bleeding is the most common reaction and can occur in several ways

including heavy periods, bloody or discolored urine or feces

nosebleeds, bleeding gums and prolonged bleeding from a cut.

A 2014 study published in PLOS ONE found

that a blood thinner commonly prescribed to prevent blood clots after a hip or knee replacement is associated

with an increased risk of post-surgery bleeding or infection.

Some other possible side effects include dizziness

muscle weakness, hair loss and skin rashes

Blood thinners should be taken as suggested by your doctor or it can lead to serious consequences.

To be on the safe side and reduce the risk of blood clots

you can always try some foods and herbs that are natural anticoagulants and can help prevent your blood from clotting.

Caution: Anticoagulant foods and herbs should not be used as a substitute for prescription anticoagulant medication.

In addition, some natural blood-thinning foods and herbs could interact with prescription medicines

Consult your doctor to determine what's best for you.

Here are some of the best natural blood thinners to prevent blood clots.

1. Ginger

Ginger is an herb that can effectively help reduce blood clotting. It can also prevent new clots and reduce your risk of a stroke.

In addition, it promotes healthy blood circulation throughout the body

2. Turmeric

Turmeric is best known as a natural anti-inflammatory herb

but it also works as a natural blood thinner.

This happens mainly due to its curcumin content.

Curcumin can help prevent your platelets from clumping together and forming clots.

3. Garlic

Garlic is good for your heart health and is even more beneficial if you are at a higher risk of having blood clots.

Sulfur-containing compounds like adenosine, allicin and paraffinic polysulfides in garlic act as blood thinners.

4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is another effective natural anticoagulant. It contains coumarin, a chemical that acts as a powerful anticoagulant.

This sweet spice is even capable of lowering blood pressure and relieving inflammatory conditions

Cinnamon also reduces the chances of having a stroke.

5. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper has a powerful blood-thinning effect on your body and also increases circulation.

This evening recipient of the trailblazer award

My dear friend, Diana Son

I first met Diana

A budding playwright in the fall of 1995 in Los Angeles

During the Mark Taper workshop of her play "Fishes"

Little did I know that we'd end up here

Well me in LA and Diana in New York City

Bi-coastal friends and collaborators

To ambitious television creator

I'm excited that Korean American Story is honoring

This Korean American woman

Who brings her story to everything she writes and creates

This is what makes a trailblazer

You're born in Philadelphia

You're raised in Dover. Delaware to Korean-American parents

I love you

That was very nice of my friend to do that

But I now have no speech

Thank you HJ, Julie and Korean American Story

For inviting me to be here

Some of you may recognize me

As I've attended this event a few times

Introducing other guests

But my involvement with Korean American Story

Goes back to a time before

KAS was even formed

I met HJ and Teresa when we all attended

A small grass roots english language church

For Korean-Americans back in

We don't have to say the date

Suffice to say after service one day

When one of our members asked me

If I had an email address

I was like, "Email, ha like thats a thing!"

But my first intersection with KAS was in 2011

When Julie Young contacted me

And asked if she could interview me for her column, "Heart and Seoul"

It was at the end of our interview when Julie mentioned

She had twin toddlers

Who were around the same age as my twins

And that her husband is African-American and that they sometimes played at a park

Near my house at which point I realized

I had met them

I was leaving the park

As Jamal was entering with Jade and Jaserie

And we both noticed right away we were both pushing twins

Now Jade and Jaseria as well as my twins

Nate and Dash are at the same school

And tomorrow will make a presentation to their grade about the joys of mandoo

They're here tonight with my older son Wilder

And my husband Michael who I might say

Is a single dad to our three sons while

I spend many months in LA doing a job

So I think, he should probably get this award too

And a table full of my most beloved friends

It's such an honor for me to be here

And I'm grateful to you all for coming

It's a wonderful feature of the gala

That instead of making a speech we tell a story

Or Sandra tells my story

Because I had felt for many years

That someone is writing the story of my life

So many things have come full circle

When I was a senior in highschool I grew up in Dover Delaware

We went on this field trip to the city

To see a production of Hamlet at the public theatre

It was a revelatory experience for me

But when the play was over, I realized

I was no longer going to be in this magical space

Where everyone agreed we were gonna be in another world

For a couple hours

And I knew I had to get back there

But I didn't know how

In three hours I was gonna be back in Dover Delaware

Where there was no theatre

No museums, no nothing really

I was bereft as our bus pulled away

From the public theatre but then I noticed

These purple flags that had three letters on them

N.Y.U

And I went home and I applied

And months later I received a letter saying I got in

And two of my friends here tonight

Are people I met on the first day freshmen year

And some years after that

My play "Stop Kiss" premiered at the public theatre

Which also my play "Satellites"

And which I consider my artistic home

So you know what I mean

When I say that I feel like someone is writing my life

Something else is coming full circle

As I stand here

And tell you my story

Because I feel that this is the year

That I'm coming out as a Korean-American

The play that launched my

My career "Stop Kiss"

A story of two young straight women who fall in love

And are the victims of a gay bashing

And even Sandra played one of the lead characters

Nothing about her characters and any of the other characters

Was race specific

I made a point to cast actors

That would reflect the ethnic diversity of New York City

But it was a conscious choice

Not to define them by their race

Maybe 'cause I was a passionate advocate of color blind casting

Or maybe I didn't know how to write a character

That expressed what was important to me

Who was also Korean American

I started working in television are "Stop Kiss"

Which was extend three times

And was and possibly still is

The longest running straight play to be performed at the Public since the 70's

I went from being a starving playwright

Whose day job was writing Star Trek trivia questions

For the sci-fi channel website

To being the staff writer on

The first season of a brand new show called "The West Wing"

So "The West Wing" was a great show

But as you know if you watched it

There weren't any Asian-American characters

In fact in the pilote there weren't

Any characters of color

On "The West Wing" or any of the new shows

On any of the four big networks that season

I was the only woman and the only person of color

Of the writing staff of "The West Wing"

On the one hand this felt validating

I knew I was hired because I was a good writer

Not because I was needed to bring a specific cultural perspective

I think we've all had experiences

Where we just want to be seen as a fellow human

A skilled person a good worker

But the flipside of that means

Not being seen for the fullness of who we are

I remember being on a different show

Years later with a very diverse cast of characters

The main character was a black female detective

Her partner was latino there was a white cop who was gay

And I asked the producer if we could add a cop character who was Asian-American

And this highly esteemed producer said

That they had tried to do that

They had auditioned ton of Asian-American men

But we couldn't find anyone in the community with command presence

Meaning they couldn't find a single Asian-American actor

Who audiences believe had any authority

And you know what it's like in those moments

You spend the first 30 seconds wondering

Did he just say that to my face?

Does he think that I'm just gonna sit here and not say anything

Am I gonna say anything?

What would I say?

Until I finally settled

On the most important question

All tv writers ask themselves no matter what their gender

Or ethnicity and that is

What am I going order for lunch today?

Being invisible as a Korean-American

Hasn't hurt my career lets face it maybe its even helped

But the consequence is I haven't really capitalized

On the value of being Korean-American

I mean internally I think its brought great value to my work

I can easily place myself in any character

Who feels other

I know what its like to be underestimated

I'm the youngest of two

And grew up in the shadow of my older brother

My mom was one of six girls

Because her parents kept trying to have a son

Eventually they gave up and adopted a nephew

So when she gave birth to my

Brother right out of the gate

It was if her two dollar quick pick

Made her the megamillions winner of the year

I knew up growing I was loved

Everything my parents did was for me and my brother

I sincerely believe that in my heart

In addition to hearing it my entire childhood

I also felt that I was loved differently

My kids are well acquainted with the air condition story

In which on hot summer nights

I would lay awake on top of my sheets

Sweating and trying to cool myself with a fan that pushed the hot air around

As I listened to the cool electric buzz of my brothers air conditioner

In the room across the hall

For years my friends had been telling me

I have to find a way

To share my story in TV form

But I didn't know how to tell it

Until I met Wen Zhou

The CEO of Phillip Lim

Whose clothes I'm wearing today

Who is hear

Whose story is so extraordinary

And different than mine

But I finally felt that I had found

An Asian-American story that I can sell to a network

And using Wen's story as a focal point

I came up with an idea for a show

That was based on Wen's life

But featured a group of Asian-American moms

Whose kids go to a crazy progressive school in the city

And who meet regularly for dimsum after drop off

Which is a real thing that Wen, Julie Young and I are apart of

As I develop the idea

I unconsciously found one of the characters

Background and perspective sounding very much like mine

And in October Wen and I went to LA

And sold the show to HBO

So I'm writing the pilot now

And there's still many hoops

That my script still has to pass through

Before it makes it to the air

But if it does

It would be the first tv series

Ever to have a group of Asian-American women as its lead characters

But even the act of writing it is a revelation to me

And is requiring a transformation

Which is why Im saying that I'm coming out as a Korean-American this year

Because this is the first time I've ever felt bold enough

To write about my experience

Thank you Wen for letting me tell your story

Which made it safe for me to tell mine

With the success of "Atlanta", "Insecure"

"Vida","Jane the Virgin","Empire" and "Blackish"

Networks are catching on to the idea that people want to see stories about

People of color

But Asian-Americans are getting the least amount of opportunity

Because we're not seen as a profitable audience

I know that makes no sense but we're not

And we have to change that

And theres a very clear and simple way

By supporting Asian-American stories

And Asian-American content makers

Watch "Fresh off the Boat" whether you like the show or not

Set your tivos to it every week

Join the social media campaign to save it, it's on the bubble

It may not get renewed for another season

And if it doesn't there will be no show on television

With a majority Asian-American cast

You know there are almost 500 tv shows in production right now

Between all the networks and Netflix and Amazon

And there is only one show

Centered on an Asian-American family

Those of you who are good at math can do the percentages

Watch West World which was co-created

By Asian-American show runner Lisa Joy

In August go see "Crazy Rich Asians"

At the movie theatre

Honestly it doesn't even matter if you like these shows or movies

Because if they fail

It won't be seen as a failure of the story to meet our expectations

It'll be seen as proof that there's no money to be made

Telling Asian-American stories

I know there's alot of different ways we need to be activists these days

But there's no better event

At which we should acknowledge

The importance of telling our stories

Thank you
