Youtube daily May 1 2018

In today's video, I'm going to show you how to perform an SEO audit for any website

in 20 minutes or less.

Stay tuned.

[Music]

Hey guys, it's Joshua Hardwick here with Ahrefs.

Before I dive into this process, let me first introduce the tools I'll be using for this

SEO audit.

So I've got Google Analytics, Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, Google Structured Data

Testing Tool, Ahrefs obviously, Copyscape, a SERP Simulator, and a Web Page Word Counter

And as you can see, I've already got these already open in multiple browser tabs. So

if you're following along with this video, I'd advise you to do the same.

Get all of these open and you'll be good to go.

And this final tab is the website I'll be using for the bulk of this demonstration,

which is simplelifeinsure.com.

But obviously you can use your own website or a client's website or whatever you want

to use.

So, let's get to it.

Now, the first thing that I'm going to do is I'm going to check that only one version

of the site is actualy browsable.

Right now, I'm viewing the website at https://simplelifeinsure.com.

But I want to make sure that this is the only location at which I can access this website.

So all of the versions of this site should redirect to this version, which we call the

"canonical."

So first, I'm going to check the non-secure version at http, rather than https.

And straight away, you can see that this does in fact redirect to the canonical https version,

which is a good start.

Now I'll try the www version with and without https.

So, let's type those in http, that seems to redirect and https with the www. So that also

seems to redirect too. So there are no problems there. All of those different versions that

someone could kind of type in are in fact redirected to the canonical version of the

site. So moving on, I need to actually crawl the website so that I can check for any other

issues.

And for this, I'm going to use Ahrefs' Site Audit tool, which if you're following along,

can be found at ahrefs.com/site-audit.

And, just a quick side note: you could use Screaming Frog for this or another crawling

tool. But Site Audit is probably your best bet if you're following along, with this

video.

So here, what I'm going to do is I'm going to start a new project, enter the domain,

select the correct http protocol, which in this case is https, then I'm gonna hit next,

and next again.

So then on this page, I'm going to leave the majority of the settings here as they are,

but I will actually check the "execute Javascript" toggle and the "check HTTP status of external

links," toggle. This just ensures that we get the most accurate audit. And then I'm

just going to hit "next" one final time.

Finally, I'll just uncheck this option to schedule a weekly crawl, and finally just

hit "create project."

And that's it. The site is now being crawled.

So, while I wait for that to finish, I'm going to perform a few more manual checks.

The first of which is making sure that the site is actually indexed in Google, which

I'll do by searching in Google for site:simplelifeinsure.com.

And it looks like there are around 222 results.

And as I know this site pretty well, I know that looks about right, but if you're following

along with this and you have no clue whether that number corresponds to the real amount

of pages on your website, then come back to this step once your crawl in Site Audit is

complete.

So I actually already ran a crawl for this website before I started recording this video.

So to demonstrate this, I'm just going to go to the "Internal pages" report in Site

Audit for the crawl that I actually completed before recording this video.

And in this case, you can see that there is a small discrepancy in the number of pages,

being indexed compared to those that are actually on our website. Which is actually being caused,

as I've investigated this already. Is being caused by Google indexing a few individual

elements from the homepage, which is something that, you know, needs to be fixed at some

point.

So next up, I'm going to run a quick check and check if the site ranks for its brand

name.

So to do that, I'll just type in simple life insure into Google.

And as you can see, it does in fact rank and it's the number one result too. So there are

no problems there.

So now I'm just going to jump back to the site and I'm going to run a few basic on-page

checks for all the most important pages on the site, starting with the homepage.

So to do this I'm just going to right-click and hit "view page source," which will

show me the HTML for the page.

Then I'm going to start by taking a look at the title tag.

So if you're struggling to spot this, just hit CMD+F or CTRL+F I believe on Windows and

type a less-than sign, followed by the word "title."

You can see that it then gets highlighted in the HTML and you can see that title tag.

So here, the title tag reads, "Instant affordable life insurance quotes - Simplelifeinsure.com."

So at first glance, this looks pretty good, you know.

But I want to check a couple of things:

Number one, is this a good length? Because title tags that are too long get truncated

in the search results, which doesn't really look good.

And number two I want to check whether this is optimized around any worthwhile keywords,

which it should be, ideally.

So number one is easy to check. Just copy and paste the title tag into a SERP simulator

such as SERPSim, which is what I"m using here and it'll kick back whether or not it's

too long.

In this case, you can see that everything looks good.

So let's move on and check the keywords.

So to me, it looks like this title tag has been formulated around the keyword "affordable

life insurance," or perhaps "life insurance quotes."

So I'm going to check both of these in Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer.

So if I just quickly type that in, you can see that both of these appear to have a decent

amount of search volume, so again, you know, there's no problems there. It looks like this

is quite a well optimized title tag.

So let's move on and check the meta description.

Again, you can find this easily by searching. Just type in the less than sign and then you

know, meta, and you'll get kind of all of the meta descriptions and title tags and all

that kind of stuff.

So I'm just going to paste this again into the SERP simulator later.

And as you can see, length is totally fine.

And it also looks to me like it's been pretty well-written, you know, it's quite a nice

description that kind of sums up the site quite well.

So finally, I'm just going to check the H1 tag on the page.

Now, it's not an absolute requirement these days, but I do generally prefer there to only

be one of these on the page, so one H1 tag. And it's also best, in my opinion if the

keywords are sprinkled in there as well.

So on this page, you can see that there are actually two H1s, which are effectively just

duplicates of each other.

So this is not a big deal. Personally I'd prefer to remove one of them, but aside from

that, you know, it's a nice length and I can see the keywords we just checked are indeed

sprinkled in, so this is another pass for this website.

So I recommend performing these manual checks on all the most important pages on your website.

And by "important," I'm generally referring to those with the most traffic.

You can use Google Analytics to find this out, or alternatively, if you're not using

Google Analytics you can go to Ahrefs' Site Explorer, enter your domain, and then go to

the Top Pages report, which will show you the pages that perform the best in terms of

organic traffic.

Then it's just a case of working down this list and performing the same manual checks

on each of those page.

But anyway, let's move on and let's get back to the crawl report in Ahrefs' Site

Audit.

This tells us a ton of information basically. But I'm going to start by checking the "HTML

Tags" report to see if it found any other on-page errors across the site.

And as you can see, it did.

44 pages with multiple H1 tags, 33 pages missing a meta description, and 7 pages where the

title tag is too long. And there's also one page where the meta description is too short.

So I'm not going to bore you by sifting through every single one of these errors in this video,

but these are issues that should at least be investigated and probably fixed at some

point.

So let's move on and next I'm going and check for duplicate and thin content.

So, sticking with the Site Audit, I'm going to go to the "Content Quality report."

And under "Clusters of duplicate pages," you can see that it's reporting no duplicates

found. So again, this is a pass for this particular site.

But it's worth noting that this only looks for duplicate content on your domain. On the

domain that you actually crawled.

It doesn't check if any of our content is duplicated across other websites.

To do this, you'll need to use Copyscape. So I'm going to do this and I'm going to enter

a URL from the site, and I'll just use the homepage for this example.

And in this case you can see that Copyscape has actually found a few matches, but despite

this, I don't think they're anything to worry about here.

If you look closely, these look to be triggered by the disclaimer in the footer which, in

all honesty, is probably just a stock disclaimer and nothing to worry about whatsoever.

So for this site, I'm not too worried about stolen content or anything like that so I'm

not going to bother checking any more pages.

But I do want to check for thin content, which is content that's kind of short and pointless

and doesn't really provide any value.

So I'll just quickly hop back to Site Audit and check the "Content Quality"report once

again.

And here I'm looking for "Low word count" errors, of which as you can see, this site

doesn't appear to have any.

So you know, we're all good at the end in this instance.

So next up we've got site speed.

Now, the most obvious tool to use for this is Google's Pagespeed Insights which is

a good tool, when it actually works.

If I try this with the Simple Life Insure for the homepage, for example, you can see

that it kicks back a "Speed unavailable" error. Which is obviously pretty useless.

There are other tools that you can use to check site speed, such as GTmetrix, but actually,

this is something else that Site Audit should have already checked.

So jumping back again to Site Audit, I'll check the "Performance" report this time

and see if there are any "Slow page" errors.

So there are in this instance.

And clicking through to the full report on this issue will reveal a list of all the slow-loading

URLs so you can kind of investigate those individually.

And you can even order this list by organic traffic so you can then prioritize the fixes,

which is a nice hack in my opinion.

So moving on, next up, I'm going to check for structured data issues.

So for those of you not familiar with structured data, it's basically a type of structured

markup that some sites choose to add to their pages so as to supply Google with a more structured

view of that page.

If you've ever seen results with star ratings, or reviews, or calorie counts or any of that

stuff in the SERPs, then you're probably familiar with structured data or at least

the results of it.

So to test structured data, there's a Google Structured Data Testing tool.

So basically, you just enter a URL, and it kicks back whether or not there are any errors

with the structured data on that page.

Now the site I've been using thus far doesn't have any kind of special structured data markup, so

I'll use a different URL for this example, which is a pizza dough recipe from Martha

Stewart dot com.

So I've pasted this into the structured data testing tool and run the test and it kicks

back a couple of warnings. The lack of an author name and the lack of nutritional information

for the recipe.

Both of these things, not a particularly big deal, but worth fixing nonetheless.

Ok, so before I continue, I should mention that I'm just going to switch gears here

and use the Ahrefs blog as the example site for the next few steps.

The reason for this is because I'll need to access data from analytics and search console,

and I don't actually have this data for Simple Life Insure

So, next step, a quick organic traffic analysis.

So for this, I'm going to head over to the Acquisition report in Google Analytics, and

then I'm going to go to Overview and then Organic Search.

So I'm also going to set the time period for the past month.

And it looks like, as you can see, we're averaging around 1,800 visits a day from organic

search on the Ahrefs blog, which isn't too bad at all.

So next, I'll check the "Landing Page" report. So this shows you the pages that are

bringing in the most search traffic.

And as you can see, for the Ahrefs blog, it looks like it's our website traffic article.

So finally, I'm going to set the period to the last 12 months to get a sense of whether

traffic is increasing or decreasing.

And as you can see, it looks like it's rising quite nicely actually.

So if for whatever reason, you don't have Google Analytics installed, you can instead

use the Top Pages report in Ahrefs' Site Explorer to get a sense of the pages that

receive the most organic traffic.

So it's clear that organic traffic is moving in the right direction for Ahrefs' Blog But

what about rankings?

So to check this, I'll go to Ahrefs' Site Explorer, enter the blog URL, and then check

the Organic Search tab on the Overview report.

Looking at the Organic Keywords graph, I can see that the rankings are indeed on the increase.

Which again is good and is what you would probably expect when you see a rise in organic

traffic as we are doing with Ahrefs' blog.

But actually, as we recently rewrote our "SEO tips" article, I kind of want to know how

that specific page is performing.

So next up, I'm going to enter that into the search bar and check this same graph.

So it looks like there was a slight dip in January, but it's now ranking for more keywords

than ever. Which again, is definitely a good sign.

Digging a little deeper, I also want to know how it's performing for the main target

keyword, which in this case is "SEO tips."

I'll check this by searching for "SEO tips" in the Organic Keywords report and

then viewing the history chart. So it looks like rankings have increased since

the update in September, and now the rankings are reasonably steady in positions 3-5, you

know, hovering around that area.

So pretty good, but still room for improvement.

Which leads me neatly onto the next step of the audit process actually, which is finding

low-hanging keyword opportunities.

So let me go back a step and view data for Ahrefs' blog as a whole.

And then I'm going to navigate to the Organic Keywords report once again.

And in here, I'm going to filter for keywords where Ahrefs' blog, pages on Ahrefs' blog,

currently rank in positions 3 to 5.

And I'm I'll also going to add a search volume filter, and set that at a minimum of

1,000 searches per month.

So now I can see keywords that have a good number of monthly searches, for which we already

have rankings in positions 3-5.

Basically, these are low-hanging opportunities.

If we could increase rankings by just one or two positions for any of these keywords,

it would no doubt result in a nice traffic boost.

So you'll actually notice that one of these keywords on the list is "SEO tips," which

is definitely a keyword that we should focus on.

So again, this brings me nicely onto the next step which is a backlink profile analysis.

So much like the organic traffic analysis, this isn't so much about finding specific

problems and fixing them as it is about making sure things are generally heading in the right

direction.

So I'll start by going to the Overview report in Site Explorer, and checking out the Referring

Domains graph.

So it looks like the number of referring domains is steadily increasing as is the traffic.

But what kinds of anchors are those domains using when linking to us?

So let's scroll down to the "Anchors Cloud" and take a quick look.

So it looks as though there's a mixture of anchors, but as you can see, it's mostly

branded anchors, which is again quite good.

So finally, I'm going to dive a bit deeper and make sure there are no dodgy sites actually

linking to the Ahrefs blog.

So for this, I'll go to the Referring Domains report, then sort the domains by domain rating

from lowest to highest.

So nothing is jumping out at me particularly in this report, so on the whole, things I

would say are ok.

Obviously, this is a very quick and high-level view. So if you're concerned about dodgy

sites linking to you, then I would recommend spending more time in this report and delve

in a little bit deeper.

Ok so next up, I want to make sure there are no broken pages on the blog.

And especially not broken pages with a lot of backlinks.

So, I'll go to the "Best by Links" report and then filter for 404 pages.

So it looks like there are a few broken images, but nothing too worrying. No pages with a

lot of backlinks.

Most of these images are likely the result of old blog posts being updated or deleted.

None of them, as I say have a lot of links pointing to them, so these are nothing really

to worry about.

If you do see broken pages with a ton of referring domains, then you may have issues.

In that case, I would actually recommend checking out the full guide to finding and fixing broken

links, which you can find at ahrefs.com/blog/fix-broken-links.

So I'm also going to check for broken outbound links on the blog. And for this I'll use the

Broken Links report under Outgoing Links.

So it looks like there are a few of these either need to be removed or updated, ideally.

Which brings me to the final two steps in the SEO audit process, both of which revolve

around content.

So the first is a content gap analysis.

This basically involves finding keywords that competitors currently rank for yet, we currently

don't.

So for this, I'll use the Content Gap tool within Ahrefs'.

So I already know a handful of competitors for Ahref. Backlinko for example, Siege Media,

and Hobo Web.

And I'm going to enter these domains as a target in the Content Gap tool.

Then I'll add Ahrefs blog under the, "But the following target doesn't rank for" option.

By the way, I should stress that all of these need to be set to domain mode.

So finally, I'm just going to hit "show keywords" to uncover any content gaps.

So right away, there are quite a lot of results. But to filter these down, I'm going to filter

only for keywords with a search volume of at least 5 thousand.

So now I can see a few good keywords that our competitors are ranking for, yet we currently

aren't. These would be well worth us creating some content around.

After all, if our competitors are ranking for such terms, then what's to stop us ranking

for them?

So onto the last step in our SEO audit process, which is running a full content audit.

Now we did this a couple of years back and ended up deleting over 200 pages from the

Ahrefs blog.

All of these were low-quality pages that served no purpose and brought virtually no traffic

to the site.

But the cool part is this: our organic traffic actually increased after we deleted these pages.

So what exactly did we do?

Well, it was quite simple, actually.

We found low-quality pages with little to no organic traffic and if they had potential

and could be easily improved, then we updated and relaunched them.

If not, we deleted them and redirected the URL to another relevant page on the blog.

To be honest, this is quite an in-depth topic, and it's one that we plan to tackle soon

with a full post on the blog.

But for now, I would advise that should you choose to perform a content audit, you should

avoid deleting content unless you're absolutely certain that it serves no purpose and has

no value.

Even then, it may be better to just improve and relaunch that content.

And that just about brings us to the end of our 16-step SEO audit process.

So I hope it was useful and of course, don't forget to check out the full post on the Ahrefs

blog, where you can find a much more in-depth write-up of this entire process.

And again, if you enjoyed this video, don't forget to hit "subscribe" because there's

Should You Pay Over Retail for Luxury Watches? - Duration: 7:31.

This is Watch Your Style.

Today we're gonna be going over a topic that seems to be very common in this day and age.

Being the way that the current watch market is going and is: It's it worth paying over

retail?

[opening music]

So you can tell nowadays with the new watches that are coming out by Rolex and some of the

discontinued models from the other brands, the prices are all over the place.

Now there's some watches that tend to just always be in that standard range with depreciation

and stuff like that, but there are some watches that the prices are absurd at the moment.

And the watches that are really falling into that category are: either a) discontinued

models or b) low supply, high demand models.

And those are the two categories that I like that split this conversation into because

it's two total different spectrums.

For example, I like to start with the discontinued models.

Now, most watches when they come out and they're brand new releases, sometimes they're not

really that hot at the moment and they kind of just sell pretty normal.

People buy them retail at the ADs.

They can pick them up in the gray market for below retail, stuff of that nature.

Preowned ones are flowing.

So they kind of start off kind of high.

They kind of do a dip down.

By the way, this thing I do it with my hand here, I like to call it the curve because

this happens with these watches.

There's a curve that occurs.

They kind of come out at first and they're selling at full retail, little bit under.

They kind of dip down a bit as the 3, 4, 5 years go by, but then all of the sudden they

get discontinued and that's when the curve starts to go up.

So it's like, released, they start dipping down a little bit, 5, 6, 7, 10 years then

it's discontinued, BAM!...back up.

That's when you have no other choice but to pay over retail.

Those are the watches that are the biggest problem because they're not gonna make them

anymore.

The chances are the prices are not gonna go down.

So that's something we have to look at.

It's discontinued versus low supply, high demand watches.

So some of the examples for these discontinued watches that I like to use is, one of the

best ones of all, is the Patek 5711.

The watch has a retail of $24,700.

I mean, I remember that that watch I used to sell them for around $28,000.

They were already...again, BAM, came out, did that, but they were already a little bit

over retail.

Nowadays, they're going for $50,000....$48k, $45k, $50k.

That's a watch, for example, that you either want it or you don't.

You're not gonna ever get one again at retail.

Yes, of course, there's this miracle guy, is those that friend of the friend that somehow

knows this AD and is the only one left in the world.

Whatever!

For the general market, if you want a 5711 stainless steel, you're gonna be paying over

retail, so this is one of those certain areas where, fine, it's OK.

If you want it, it's OK to pay over retail, because chances are it's not gonna dip down

below retail.

Another example is the Patek 5980 in steel.

Retail was $51,000.

I sold those things maybe five years ago for $38,000.

Nowadays you can expect to pay $60k+, over retail.

I don't see them.

I don't see them coming out any cheaper.

I don't see them going down in prices.

That's a watch that's gonna stay there.

My prediction is gonna stay there, keep climbing or just hold there.

So if you want one, you gotta pay over retail.

So the other side of the spectrum would be the low supply, high demand watches.

Now, this is for those new releases, introducing the ceramic bezel Daytona.

You know, people are paying $5,000 over retail.

I've had somebody tell me that the waiting list is like 5 years.

I mean, Five years?! Five years from now I don't even know if I want the same damn

watch.

Five years from now, who knows what the heck happens in five years?!

But some people are actually in that line waiting to get that watch.

Five years from now, they might be available below retail because we don't know where that

one is gonna go.

So, for the low supply, high demand watches is a little more volatile and which really

brings the biggest question in all of this is, How bad do you really want this watch?

That's something you gotta ask yourself, because for the ceramic bezel, stainless steel Daytonas,

the retail is like fourteen thousand and change or what not, in that area, whatever.

But they're going for $19-$20,000, so how bad do you really want it?

Do you wanna wait for the prices to go down?

Do you want them to start shipping more merchandise?

Or if you really want it now, you gotta pay up.

So, there's another scenario where, is it worth paying over retail?

Well, it depends how bad do you really want it.

If you really want it now and you don't wanna wait, life is short.

Sometimes you just gotta do it while you can.

What the hell?

Why not, and just pay over retail?

You know?

It is what it is.

One good example of a watch that for me tends to be kind of like a hybrid between these

two topics, between the discontinued and the low supply, high demand is the Hulk.

Rolex Hulk has a retail of $9,050.

I remember I couldn't sell them for $7,500 five years ago.

Now, Oh my God!

They're going for $11,500.

I wouldn't pay that for them, but they're over retail because there's like this craze

for them, you see?

I don't know man.

That's one of those models that for me that I'm not sure yet if it's discontinued.

If it's not.

It doesn't fall into the category yet.

I wouldn't put it just yet in the category of the 5711 steel or the 5980.

Another good example is the Batman.

Still available at your local AD.

Has a retail of $8,950 or something like that.

And what happens is, there isn't any.

Waiting list.

Two years.

You gotta 100 people ahead of you in the AD.

So, the good thing about the Batman is they're going in the pre-owned market, in the gray

market, a little bit over.

It's not so exaggerated the prices over retail.

So you go over that main question again, How bad do you really want it?

So when you're thinking about these watches that you're obsessed about and they happen

to be going over retail, you have to think about what I'm talking about, that curve.

You see, the discontinued watches have a different curve.

They kind of start off at retail, start creeping down and then they shoot up, whereas in my

opinion, the low supply, high demand watches start right at the gate high, but from there

I can only see them going down.

So you gotta ask yourself that question I told you already a couple of times, How

bad do you really want it?

If you really want it, life is short, shop well and buy it.

So feel free to comment below how you feel if it's worth paying over retail for watches.

And if you liked this video, please like and share.

Champion for Black Power & All the Oppressed: Dr. Cone, Founder of Black Liberation Theology, Dies - Duration: 21:44.

AMY GOODMAN: This is Democracy Now!, democracynow.org, The War and Peace Report.

I'm Amy Goodman, with Juan González.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Well, we spend the rest of the hour looking at the life and legacy of

the founder of black liberation theology, Reverend Dr. James Cone.

Starting in the 1960s, he argued for racial justice and interpreted the Christian gospel

from the experience of the oppressed.

He said he was inspired by Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who gave black theology its

Christian identity, and Malcolm X, who gave black theology its black identity.

Dr. Cone died Saturday at the age of 81 [sic].

This is part of an address he gave in 1971 at the University of Richmond.

REV.

JAMES CONE: There can be no reconciliation with masters as long as they are masters,

no reconciliation as long as men are in prison.

There can be no communication between the masters and the slave, until masters no longer

exist as masters, are no longer present as masters.

The Christian task is to rebel against all masters, destroying their pretensions to authority

and ridiculing the symbols of power.

However, it must be remembered that oppressors never take kindly to those who question their

authority.

They do not like thugs and bums, people who disregard their power.

And they will try to silence them any way they can.

But if we believe that our humanity transcends them and is not dependent upon their goodwill,

then we can fight against them, even though it may mean death.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: That was Dr. James Cone speaking in 1971.

And correction: He died at the age of 79.

His groundbreaking books include Black Theology & Black Power, published in 1969; A Black

Theology of Liberation, published in 1970; Martin & Malcolm & America: A Dream or a Nightmare?;

and God of the Oppressed; and as well as The Cross and the Lynching Tree, which he published

in 2011.

He had also just completed a forthcoming memoir titled Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody.

This is Dr. James Cone speaking at Union Theological Seminary in 2016.

REV.

JAMES CONE: If I were going to write an authentic black liberation theology, I have to let the

suffering of black people speak in and through my theology.

My theology came out of the black experience of slavery, segregation and lynching, and

not from white American and European theologies that I studied in graduate school.

Black liberation theology emerged out of the civil rights and Black Power movements, symbolizing

the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

AMY GOODMAN: Dr. Cone joined the faculty of Union Theological Seminary here in New York

in 1969.

He was at the seminary, he was at Union Theological, for a half a century.

He was named the Bill and Judith Moyers distinguished professor of systematic theology in 2017.

Through his work and in the classroom, he inspired generations of scholars, professors,

pastors and activists to work to dismantle white supremacy, and helped give birth to

the womanist theology and other liberation theologies.

Professor Cornel West called him "the greatest liberation theologian to emerge in the American

empire—and he never ever sold out," West said.

One of Dr. Cone's students made national headlines during the 2008 presidential election,

when then Barack Obama's pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, made controversial comments

on race and other issues.

Well, for more, we're joined by three guests.

Here in New York, the Reverend Dr. Serene Jones is with us, president of Union Theological

Seminary, as well as Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, dean of the Episcopal Divinity School and

professor at Union Theological Seminary, a former student of Dr. Cone.

And in Atlanta, Georgia, we're joined by another former student, Reverend Dr. Raphael

Warnock, who serves as senior pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church there, which was the

spiritual home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Professor Warnock, Dr. Warnock, is also the chair of the New Georgia Project, author of

The Divided Mind of the Black Church: Theology, Piety, and Public Witness, and on the board

of Union Theological Seminary.

We welcome you all to Democracy Now!

Our condolences.

I wanted to begin with the Reverend Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas.

You work so closely with Dr. Cone at Union Theological.

You were his student.

It's hard to even talk about him in the past tense.

REV.

KELLY BROWN DOUGLAS: Yes, that's right.

AMY GOODMAN: Talk about his legacy, what he meant to you and what he meant to this country.

REV.

KELLY BROWN DOUGLAS: Yes, I think that his legacy is very hard to really quantify, because

it will be a very long legacy that will cross generations, because Dr. Cone always said

that he didn't want disciples.

He didn't want students who would come and simply imitate his work and simply carry on

the paradigms that he created.

He urged us always to find our own voice.

And he wanted us to bring our own perspectives, not simply to our understanding of God, but

to our understanding of the complexity of injustice, so that we could understand more

the meaning of God's justice and the work that we had to do.

So he wanted committed students.

And so he opened the space for us to indeed find our own theological voice.

He wanted students who were committed to the work of justice, which is God's work—he

always understood that—and gave us a place, first of all, to study, at a time where we

would not be able to find many places to do our work and to do our theology and to do

the theology that meant something to us.

As we were there, as I said, he encouraged us to critique his work and to move beyond

it.

And so he opened the space for the emergence of new theologies, new theological voices,

hence womanist theology, black women.

There weren't many places for black women to do work in the early '70s, etc., when

I went to Union.

He provided us that opportunity.

And so, his legacy looms large, because he has inspired a generation of black and other

liberation theologians.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And, Dr. Serene Jones, you're the president of Union Theological.

His impact on Union itself and on Christian theology generally?

REV.

SERENE JONES: Well, his impact on Union is inestimable.

Imagine a single powerful voice showing up in classrooms and preaching in the pulpit

for 50 years, 50 years in one place.

He won't walk our halls anymore.

His voice won't be heard in our classrooms.

And it wasn't just any voice.

It was the voice of a man whose deep faith was manifest in this forceful, fierce commitment

to the liberation of black people and the liberation of people everywhere.

That can't be replicated.

But as Dr. Douglas said, for Jim, the best replication was for new generations of students

to find that commitment to speaking on behalf and with and in solidarity beside the oppressed

of the world in the face of grave injustice.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And the impact that he had on Christian theology, in general, in the

United States?

REV.

SERENE JONES: Well, so, his impact on Christian theology—I read Jim Cone in 1981 in my first

class in seminary, just a few years ago.

It was the first theological book I read in seminary.

And here I was, reading a man who, in a sense, sent a torpedo right at the heart of the whiteness

of Christian theology as it had been manifest in churches in the United States, since the

beginning, and supported chattel slavery and Jim Crow.

And he said no.

He said, "God is not white.

God is not even no color.

God is black.

And Jesus is black.

And Jesus seeks the empowerment of black people, and that the masters need to walk away."

AMY GOODMAN: I wanted to go for a minute to Jim Cone in his own words, Reverend Dr. Cone's

2011 book, The Cross and the Lynching Tree.

He called the crucifixion of Jesus a "first-century lynching."

I want to turn to Dr. James Cone being interviewed by Bill Moyers in 2007.

REV.

JAMES CONE: The lynching tree interprets the cross.

It keeps the cross out of the hands of those who are dominant.

Nobody who is lynching anybody can understand the cross.

That's why it's so important to place the cross and the lynching tree together,

because the cross, or the crucifixion, was analogous to a first-century lynching.

In fact, biblical scholars, when they want to describe what was happening to Jesus, many

of them says it was a lynching.

And all I want to suggest is, if American Christians say they want to identify with

that cross, they have to see the cross as a lynching.

Any time your empathy, your solidarity, is with the little people, you're with the

cross.

If you identify with the lynchers, then, no, you can't understand what's happening.

That, in the sense of resistance, what resistance means for helpless people.

Power in the powerless is not something that we are accustomed to listening to and understanding.

It's not a part of our historical experience.

America always wants to think it's going to win everything.

Well, black people have a history in which we didn't win.

We did not win.

See, our resistance is a resistance against the odds.

That's why we can understand the cross.

AMY GOODMAN: That's Dr. James Cone, about a decade ago, being interviewed by Bill Moyers

on PBS.

Let's turn to Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock in Atlanta, senior pastor of the Ebenezer

Baptist Church.

He did his Ph.D. under Dr. Cone at Union Theological Seminary.

Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock, explain what black liberation theology is, further, and

what he meant to you.

REV.

RAPHAEL WARNOCK: Thank you so much, Amy.

It's great to be here with you and, of course, with the president of Union, my alma mater,

Serene Jones and Kelly Brown Douglas, who also did her doctorate under Jim Cone.

Listen, all of us really are reeling in the death of this man who was larger than life.

He really created something for which there were no models for what he did.

This black theology of liberation comes really from the depth of his experience.

James Cone was an academic theologian who spoke with the power and moral authority of

a prophet.

And the reason he was able to do this is because his thinking was immersed deeply in the suffering

and the experience of black people.

And so, black theology really can be reduced to one statement, that God is the liberator

and that liberation is the central message of the gospel, and any gospel that is not

committed to the liberation of the oppressed is a heresy, it is a false gospel.

And so, what Dr. King did was that he really—he really decentered those voices that were at

the center of the discourse, and took those who were on the margins and made them the

center of the discourse.

And he said that, in a real sense, this is what Christian faith is all about.

We have to remember the context out of which black theology emerged.

It was the riots—or the uprisings, I should say, really—in Detroit, in Newark, here

in the wake of the death of Dr. King, this man who spoke with such love and deep commitment

to this idea of liberation.

He inspired Dr. King—Dr. Cone, along with Malcolm X.

And Dr. Cone has inspired countless generations, theologians, preachers, pastors.

So many of us would not be doing what we do, were it not for the incredible impact of his

voice on the American religious landscape.

AMY GOODMAN: We're going to break and then come back to this discussion.

Again, over the weekend, the Reverend Dr. James Cone died, at Union Theological Seminary

for half a century, considered the father of black liberation theology.

We're joined by two of his students, Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas and Dr. Raphael Warnock—Dr.

Kelly Brown Douglas at Union Theological, Dr. Warnock, a senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist

Church—as well as the head of Union Theological Seminary, Dr. Serene Jones.

This is Democracy Now!

Back on Dr. Cone in a minute.

AMY GOODMAN: "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen," sung by Mahalia Jackson.

One of Reverend Dr. James Cone's books was titled The Spirituals and the Blues: An Interpretation.

He wrote in his book, "No black person could escape the reality they expressed.

B.B. King, Johnny Lee Hooker, and Mahalia Jackson created essential structures that

defined my blackness."

Those, the words of the late Dr. Cone.

This is Democracy Now!

I'm Amy Goodman, with Juan González.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Well, we continue our look at the life and legacy of the founder of black

liberation theology, Reverend Dr.

Dr. Cone died Saturday at the age of 79.

This is Dr. Cone speaking at the 2012 general conference of the United Methodist Church.

REV.

JAMES CONE: I write for those who are penniless and jobless, landless, and those who have

no political or social power.

I speak and I write for gays, for lesbians, bisexuals and those who are transgender, the

queer people of this world.

I write for the undocumented farmworkers toiling in misery in our nation's agricultural fields.

I write and speak for Muslims who live under the terror of war and empire in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And I speak and write for all people who care about humanity.

AMY GOODMAN: That's Dr. Cone speaking in 2012.

I remember sitting next to him the night that Michelle Alexander gave a major address here

in New York, the author of The New Jim Crow.

We continue with our three guests, all linked to Union Theological Seminary, where he worked

and served for half a century.

Dr. Serene Jones is president of Union Theological Seminary.

Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, dean of the Episcopal Divinity School and professor at Union Theological

Seminary, a former student of Dr. Cone.

And in Atlanta, Georgia, another former student, did his Ph.D. under Dr. Cone, Reverend Dr.

Raphael Warnock, who is senior pastor of Dr. King's church, the Ebenezer Baptist Church

there.

Juan?

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Well, I wanted to ask Dr. Raphael Warnock about his seminal book, Black

Theology & Black Power.

It came in the wake of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

And your sense of the impact that that book had, in terms of beginning to—and also how

he was shaped.

The Detroit riot, of course, he often referred to as a major shaper of his own consciousness.

But how his book affected the theology, especially black liberation theology, across the country?

REV.

RAPHAEL WARNOCK: Yeah, you have to remember the context out of which this book emerged.

Black Power was the theme in the moment, and there were a number of people who were upset

about this whole theme of Black Power.

And, in fact, white liberals, in a real sense, felt betrayed.

And people were saying that this represents violence, that this is a turn in the wrong

direction, that somehow Black Power is the Antichrist.

And Dr. Cone emerged in that setting.

He talks about writing this book in his brother's church.

It took about 30 days or so.

It was like he was possessed with this deep kind of passion and concern for the humanity

of black people, the struggles not just of that moment, but of the last 300 years.

And so he writes that book out of that context.

It comes from the experience of black suffering.

He insists that that has to be the central place, the point of departure, and that any

Christian theology that does not affirm the humanity of those on the bottom is not a Christian

theology.

And so, this book really did shake the whole academic world.

It shook the church world.

As he said, that if you want to know where the message of Jesus Christ is in 20th century

America, it is Black Power.

It is this affirmation of black humanity in a country that says that everything that's

black is negative.

And so, it was a kind of transvaluative move, lifting that—taking that which was at the

bottom and saying that this is where God is in the world.

And it's really hard to overstate its impact on the discourse at that moment.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Dr. Kelly Brown?

REV.

KELLY BROWN DOUGLAS: Yes, I can only affirm what Dr. Warnock said.

And what one must understand is that Dr. Cone could not understand how anyone could be doing

any kind of Christian theology at that time, this time when black people are simply fighting

for their dignity, at a time when, of course, Dr. King had been assassinated, and you have

Christian theologians doing theology not even talking about the black struggle for liberation.

He said, "How can you be Christian and not do that?"

Not only did you have Christian theologians not talking about it, but you had pastors

ignoring what was going on.

I mean, you know, Dr. King said that these pastors were being silent, and he indicted

them for that in his, of course, Letter from the Birmingham Jail.

That never ended.

So, for Dr. Cone, this was blasphemous.

How can you be a member of a religious tradition, with the cross at its center, and you not

even speak of the black people who are struggling and fighting just for their human dignity?

So, for Cone, it was urgent.

There was—he was compelled to say something, because not to speak was in fact to betray

the very faith with which he grew up in.

And so, he knew the faith, and so his theology didn't start in his head.

His theology started from inside of him, because he was raised in a church in Bearden, Arkansas.

He knew the faith of that church.

And so, what he was articulating for the world to hear was the faith of that church and saying

that God's story was the black story.

Again, the black story was God's story.

And if you're going to be Christian in America, you need to know the black story, because

if you don't, then you aren't going to know God's story.

AMY GOODMAN: Dr. Serene Jones, yours is a Christian seminary, the Union Theological

Seminary, but Dr. Cone did not just teach Christian students.

REV.

SERENE JONES: Yes.

And it's interesting to trace his own evolution over time.

At Union now, we have a large number of students who come with no religious affiliation.

We continue to have students coming out of the Christian tradition.

But he also has in his classes now Buddhists and Muslims and a wide variety of faith backgrounds.

And Dr. Cone stepped into that space with a great sense of grace and vitality.

And as he grew, so his own message grew more expansive.

As he traveled the world and saw the suffering and oppressions of peoples everywhere, in

many different faith traditions, his own vision of what faith is and what social justice consists

of continued to expand.

AMY GOODMAN: And his feelings about President Trump, as his last year of his life was under

the current president?

REV.

SERENE JONES: Well, of course, he thought, of all the words that Cone could use that

would be the most serious was, that he was blasphemous, blasphemous and heretical, to

even claim to stand in anywhere near the Christian tradition and justify the horrors that his

administration and him have supported.

Cone was vehemently outspoken against him and would have been absolutely certain and

clear on that point.

AMY GOODMAN: Reverend Dr. Serene Jones, president of Union Theological Seminary, and Dr. Cone's

former students, the Reverend Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, dean of the Episcopal Divinity School,

professor at Union Theological Seminary, and former student Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock,

senior pastor now of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the spiritual home of Dr. Martin Luther

King Jr. Dr. James Cone, the Reverend Dr. James Cone, has died at the age of 79.

Is Organic Search Better than Paid Advertising? | Q&A with Shay - Duration: 1:01.

Are you sick of paid advertising? A lot of people are. When

it comes to organic growth, organic search results, organic

anything really when it comes to the Internet,

so many people are choosing to go there. Paid advertising is

the bane of so many people's existence when they're on the

Internet.

They're really not looking to click on an ad, somewhere that

sponsors, somewhere where they're paying to be there or get

a deal or get really pushed into buying something. They want

to find the people that they want to work with through

organic means – because they ran across them, because they

search for them, they showed up in the map section, or

because they were showing up in the organic section just

below the map on Google.

There's so many areas where you can be found organically,

and organic growth is at an all time high today.

Unfortunately, paid advertising can result in people who are

shopping around,

not that serious, and can waste all your click dollars, or

your impression dollars. With organic growth,

you can earn the right to continuously be in those spots

where people are seeing you, and you can get that earned

media that you can't get with paid advertising.

Liverpool confirm 23-man travelling squad for Champions League decider at Roma

Jurgen Klopp has named his 23-man squad flying to Italy on Tuesday for Liverpools Champions League semi-final second-leg clash with Roma.

The Reds travel to Rome holding a 5-2 lead from last weeks first leg at Anfield, but still need to get the job done at Stadio Olimpico.

With a final against either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in Kiev on May 26 on the line, Klopps side will be desperate to secure a decisive result on the road.

Liverpool have been struck with a number of injuries at this crucial juncture, however, and Joe Gomez is the latest player to be sidelined after picking up an ankle injury in Saturdays 0-0 draw with Stoke City.

The 20-year-old misses out on Klopps travelling squad, but Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane, who were also concerns, are included.

Notably, Adam Lallana is also available, having missed the last seven games with a hamstring injury, with the manager hopeful he can play a part before the end of the campaign.

Joel Matip, Emre Can and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all out, leaving Klopp to call upon youngsters Conor Masterson, Curtis Jones and Rafa Camacho.

Liverpool Squad Travelling to Rome.

Goalkeepers: Karius, Mignolet, Ward.

Defenders: Van Dijk, Lovren, Klavan, Masterson, Alexander-Arnold, Clyne, Robertson, Moreno.

Midfielders: Henderson, Wijnaldum, Milner, Lallana, Woodburn, Jones.

Forwards: Firmino, Salah, Mane, Ings, Solanke, Camacho.

Alisson on Reds interest, new Moreno deal, Celtic want Brewster? – Liverpool FC News Roundup

We round up the latest Liverpool FC news and rumours on Tuesday, as Jurgen Klopps side prepare for their Champions League clash at Roma.

Todays Main Headlines.

Lallana in, Gomez out as Reds fly to Italy Buvac in shock link with vacant Arsenal job Salah wins FWA Player of the Year award Klopp reveals promising plans after Firmino deal And heres what the Roma squad are saying about Liverpool.

Alisson Welcomes Reds Interest.

Roma goalkeeper Alisson produced a mixed display between the sticks as he conceded five goals to his rumoured suitors in last weeks semi-final first leg.

It remains to be seen whether Klopp opts to keep his faith in current No.

1 Loris Karius beyond the summer, or spend big on another long-term stopper in the form of Alisson.

The Serie A side are adamant Alisson wont be leaving the club this summer, but speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of the second leg the Brazilian welcomed interest:.

I don't know what will happen.

It's logical that the interest pleases me.

I'd say it's not just a question of need, I know my value, not in terms of money but as a player.

I know what I bring to a team, but I'm only thinking of the present.

Whatever happens next, we'll leave it for later.

I'm here and I need to focus on doing well.

Even when I was at Internacional, I had negotiations with Roma but all I thought of was doing well.

I played for six months with my contract already signed with the Giallorossi, but I won all the same..

Moreno in Line For New Liverpool Deal.

Liverpool delivered a major boost on Sunday evening as they confirmed Roberto Firmino had signed a new five-year contract.

The striker becomes the highest-earning player at the club, and is set to stay until at least the end of the 2022/23 campaign, as arguably Klopps most important talent.

Renewals for the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are expected to follow as the Reds look to retain the core of their exciting squad.

Interestingly, the Guardians Andy Hunter claims that, along with Ragnar Klavan, Alberto Moreno is among those also being considered for an extension to his current deal.

Morenos contract is set to expire in 2019, and it is unclear whether he will be willing to stay given he is behind Andy Robertson in the left-back pecking order.

Celtic Close to Signing Brewster on Loan.

A notable presence behind the Liverpool bench in recent months, academy striker Rhian Brewster is primed to be fast-tracked into Klopps first-team squad on his recovery from knee injury.

Brewster, 18, could compete with the likes of Firmino and Dominic Solanke up front next season, but according to the Herald in Scotland, he is also being considered for a loan move.

They claim that it is more likely than not that Brewster will join Celtic on a season-long deal next term, with Klopp of the belief that it is an ideal move for the youngster.

This would see Brewster link up with ex-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who is likely to see both Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard leave at the end of the campaign.

However, the Herald add that there are other clubs down south which would love to have such a talent for a year, and so the deal is yet to be done.

Three Reds Named in Sky Sports Team of the Season.

As the domestic season nears its conclusion and both the top-four race and the relegation battle intensify, individual honours are being bestowed upon the Premier Leagues standout stars.

On Tuesday morning, Salah was named the Football Writers Association Player of the Year, adding to his PFA Player of the Year award from the end of April.

And the Egyptian King was also included in Sky Sports Team of the Season, along with both Robertson and Firmino.

This recognition is magnified considering the team was assembled by ex-Man United defender Gary Neville, who only included one player from his former side: David de Gea.

On Robertson, Neville said I thought that he would falter, but conceded that hes done a lot better than I ever imagined.

Sky Sports Team of the Season: De Gea; Walker, Kompany, Vertonghen, Robertson; Salah, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling; Kane, Firmino.

Roma squad confident of another Champions League comeback against Liverpool - Duration: 5:48.

Roma squad confident of another Champions League comeback against Liverpool

Roma came back from behind to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League quarter-finals, and theyre hoping to do the same to Liverpool.

Eusebio Di Francescos side lost 4-1 at Camp Nou in the first leg of their last-eight clash, but fought for a 3-0 victory at home to reach the semi-finals.

Once again on the road in the final four, Roma suffered a 5-2 defeat at Anfield last time out, and therefore face another three-goal deficit at Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night.

The manner of their comeback against Barcelona can give the Serie A side hope, but Jurgen Klopps side should be confident of scoring at least once in the second leg.

A squad packed with stars, from goalkeeper to attack, Roma will present a considerable threat to Liverpool.

And speaking ahead of the Reds visit this week, Di Francescos squad have expressed confidence of avoiding a similar loss, with Radja Nainggolan hopeful of another famous night in Rome:.

We all know it's going to be difficult—but it was against Barcelona too and we managed it then.

We have to believe that we can do it.

It'll be even harder than it was against Barcelona because Liverpool are a stronger side physically.

The only thing we can do is try to score three goals and attempt to give as little away as possible to Liverpool..

For Edin Dzeko, the support of home crowd will be of paramount importance, as Roma look to put their defeat on Merseyside behind them.

The Bosnia international will be central to any hope of clawing back for a place in Kiev on May 26, and much like Nainggolan he is looking for another miracle:.

I certainly hope it can be like the Barcelona game.

We have to give our all from the start, the stadium will be packed and we'll do our best.

I don't want to think about the first leg, as it's better to look forward and we certainly have to do better on home turf.

We'll see what happens.

The fans will be behind us, just as they were against Barcelona, and we'll try to put in a great performance..

Goalkeeper Alisson, widely reported to be a target for Klopp this summer, told La Gazzetta dello Sport how he felt Roma collapsed mentally and physically as the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino ran riot.

The 25-year-old also noted how Di Francescos questionable 3-4-3 system left his side exposed, but acknowledged the importance of a 12th man in the second leg:.

We started well, but after the first goal we collapsed mentally and physically, we couldnt stop them anymore.

Maybe the system of play counted, that another approach could have helped the team, but what determines everything is the attitude.

On the pitch we have to run and be careful.

Fortunately, we scored two goals, so were still alive.

We know our true strength, we know that at home our fans are a 12th man and that at home we haven't conceded a goal in Europe.

We beat Chelsea and Barcelona 3-0, and that gives us confidence.

We have a 50 percent chance of going through..

The Roma squad also condemned the sickening attacks from their supporters outside Anfield last week, offering support for Sean Cox, who was left in a critical condition.

My thoughts and those of the whole dressing room are for Sean's family, said striker Patrik Schick.

This kind of thing doesn't have to happen, it's only football and there must be respect between everyone.

Alisson added: Di Francesco is right: we condemn these actions.

We hope the game is just a party..

Liverpool are still hot favourites to secure their place in the final against either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, but will be wary of taking on a Roma side resolved to strike back.
