Good evening, Assalamualaikum warrahmatullahi wabarakatuh…
Thank you to fellows from Bukalapak who invited me to meet our fellows here.
I was listening to what Aan has shared…
I just found out that we have at least two things in common…
First, it is about mother. I began to write because of mom. My mom was an elementary school teacher…
She (usually) brought her students workbooks after school, and then she put score on it…
After that, she took a black book, and started to write…
And I didn't understand what she was writing about…
But she did it almost every day.
One day I got curious about her writing.
So, one day when my mom went to the market, I quietly opened the book, don't tell my mom okay.
And it was actually a writing about our daily life.
And for the first time I knew that it is allowed to write about our story.
Before I knew at school to write about anything (randomly)…
But to write about our own life, I just knew it from my mom.
And since then, during my junior high school period, I began to write a diary.
Does anyone write a diary nowadays?
I had a diary, though it wasn't pink colour, not locked…
Maybe I think, after looking backward, writing a diary trained my writing muscle unconsciously.
So, if you like to do body exercise, like playing football, just like Messi who can kick the ball that great due to prolonged training.
For me I think, to write, we (have to) train our writing muscle by writing.
My second common thing with Aan is we went to Islamic School.
And my first novel was my diary when I was forced by my mom to join Islamic School and I refused it but then I got in eventually because I wasn't brave to fight my mom…
I happened to be Minangnese, is anyone in here Minangnese?
Minangnese tend to be very afraid of our mother especially the ones who live in villages, because we have been brainwashed with a great legendary story…
Called Malin Kundang, right?
If you fight your mom, you will become a stone statue.
So, the journey of me wandering for over 15 years from my village in West Sumatra, outskirt of Maninjau Lake…
Going to 1500 km to the corner of Java island in Gontor, was the beginning of "5 Menara" trilogy.
So, it was a forced journey, half-->hearted, but then I found something new in a new place.
If I imagine when I saw Harry Potter in Hogwarts Express, he was lucky to go with train, I was in a bus for 3 days and nights.
So, we were in Islamic Boarding School.
I am going to share a little about what I feel after I found many ways from writing.
A temporary conclusion, because I am still continuing to write…
The fact that writing brings many miracles.
That is why I said that how amazing is the power of writing.
There is an interesting quote which I always mention if talking about writing…
"Writing is stronger than a bullet".
Maybe people think that "how a bullet can be weaker than a writing?"
Because a bullet if get into someone's, it can be deadly.
In a split second it can kill.
Writing is actually stronger not because of its deadliness, but because of its liveliness.
And it doesn't happen in a split second, writing will have a very long-term effect.
If you read a book, poetry or novel…
Any books we read, what actually happens is an intimate connection between writer and reader because we focus when we read it.
You can hear music or watch TV while doing something else…
But when we read, it is hard for us to do something else, we very focus, and it occurs a dialogue between the writer and internal dialogue of reader.
And at that time, it occurs a moment (in my opinion) shots of ideas, feelings of writer entering into ourselves as readers.
And that is why writing is more powerful than a bullet.
If a bullet stops in 1 second, writing will go through our time phase.
If one day you write, it will continue to live if it is read continuously…
And according to our terms as Islamic school students, maybe that is "Amal Jariyah"…
This is a good cause that exists even when we die and bring goodness.
Secondly, I think, writing is like having a flying carpet.
Who usually owns a flying carpet?
Aladin and stories in comic books or in Hollywood movies.
But I personally, after writing, I feel like literally own a flying carpet.
I am a village boy from outskirt of the lake, never imagine before how can I be in many places overseas…
But writing brought me there literally.
I have a story about 3 or 4 years ago, there was a Professor in America contacted me…
He said, "Mr. Fuadi, we would like to invite you to our campus…"
And I said, "From which campus is it?"
"We are from University of California Berkley", one of the best universities in the world.
Then I asked "what for?"
"Just come and tell us about your stories"
"Which Story?". "A story that you write".
I was thinking, my story about "Negeri 5 Menara" was about a village boy goes to Islamic school.
What makes it interesting for people in America?
He answered "It is interesting because it is a story with a high local value and culture and there is a story about Islamic school"
I immediately said, "Ok ok, I am ready", before the professor changed his mind.
They sent me the ticket then I flew there…
And I was asked to enter the class, teaching as a lecturer, provide public lecture, play "Negeri 5 Menara" the movie…
And Professor Jeff Headler, his name, he said that, "don't you know that your book has been used in 2 of our university subjects?"
I was astonished (when I heard that), wow my novel is used in the subjects.
But thankfully I wasn't astonished that long, but then I realised that it is not about my good writing, not about my amazing language style…
Many people can share better stories with greater experience…
The difference is, I write while others don't.
So, the difference is about our action to write about it or not.
And that brought me until there.
But I actually felt sorry for the American students, they had to read novel before facing exam…
Then memorizing "Manajadda Wajadda" (Arabic terms).
But look, we can bring our ideas, our culture and anything that we want to share in that story until far away overseas, over continent, over geography boundaries, over culture, over religion…
That is the power of writing.
More over if you write it with your heart because good writing in my opinion comes from the heart.
We sometimes write with our head on campus.
So, it becomes a final draft project which hard to be understood and confuses the lecturers.
You have a chance to write with heart, and it usually goes to the heart as well.
Doesn't matter where the reader comes from, because all people's hearts are the same.
So, these are the advantages and miracles of writing.
Ok, this is just some information when I was in Berkley, Australia and etc. because it is writing which brought me to those places.
And the fact that I got advantages to travel across 50 countries, it is because of writing.
And another advantage of writing is it is not only stays in our computer file, in our notebook, but it has the power to move to another medium.
Aan for example, has entered film; there is a writing that becomes a song…
There is a writing that becomes a comic book, I am trying to think about the possibility of novel becomes games.
So, it has a flexible ability to move to another medium and it makes our ideas reach more further.
I am going to show the process of writing that I do, not all will fit you because writing is an individual work which everyone has their own way.
The first writing process that I do is actually not writing. I remember Aan said that writing poetry is a way of thinking.
Writing in many things is a way of thinking, but I start it from the way I intend to.
So before writing, I ask myself about my intention.
This I think can be applied in any writings.
Make clear of your intention and your reasons.
The clearer the reason, the better the writing will be.
Secondly, if you write, especially if it is not homework or course work,
Find a topic that closest to our heart and most or least enjoyable for us to tell the story about
So that it closes to your heart, and if we write with our heart, the essence of writing a part of its grammar has its thrill.
It can be felt when it is read, so find a topic that closes to you.
The topic closes to me is my hometown.
I was born here, not in the middle of the lake; there is a small village nearby the lake…
And that is where all starts. And then a half-hearted journey.
So, these are the topics close to me and I am ready to tell stories 3 days and nights without feeling exhausted about this.
Until the listeners tell me to stop telling the stories.
And How? Technically, you can learn from books, workshops, trainings, and the most important thing in my opinion is actually mind-->set.
Mind-->set about writing is a struggle to conquer yourself.
And one of the main ways is do a deep research, research where you can feel every detail of your stories.
For example, I do the research where I had to find my old diaries in my old board, then I re-read it so that I can use the ambience to put in the drama in my novel.
I re-->read a stack of letters I wrote to my mom during my 4 years period as a student in Islamic School.
My mom kept letters and number it. I then borrowed it and re-read it as a part of my research.
Old note books and any kind of books of course.
Something that you need to realise that which at least I realise as well, that I am not that talented to write.
But I am willing to learn how to write, so I think writing is not a talent.
But it is a result of learning how to write.
And when to write? Write today. I hope you can keep consistency in writing, if you write 1 page every day, by 11th of May 2019, you have already more than 300 pages…
And maybe that is the beginning of your book and by next year, you will have a book. Ok, thank you.
