Heya Book Nerds!
I'm Meg LaTorre-Snyder and on this episode of iWriterly, we are doing a...
Book Haul 2017 So for those of you who have been watching
iWriterly in the past, you know that we do a lot of stuff on writing.
However, we wanted to change things up a bit to also talk about some of the awesome books
that we've been reading!
Alright, so, without further ado, let's go to our list!
Our first is Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff.
This is book two in the Nevernight Chronicle.
I was blown out of the water by the first book, Nevernight, and it was amazing!
And naturally, I am ridiculously excited for the second book.
The story follows Mia, a girl who trained among the infamous assassins of the red church
in order to seek revenge on the people who murdered her family.
Following a confrontation in the second book, she starts to suspect the motives of the church
itself.
That just sounds so amazing.
Our next book is: Wonder Woman Warbringer
by Leigh Bardugo I am a huge Leigh Bardugo fan so it was a
wonderful surprise when I stumbled upon this book on the shelves
and needless to say, I bought it immediately.
For those of you who don't know Leigh Bardugo was the author of Six of Crows and at some
point I am going to do an iWriterly video on the awesomeness that is Six of Crows.
Yes, book reviews are coming to iWriterly!
Our next one is... bum bum bum...
The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi.
This book I actually picked earlier this year at BookCon.
For those of you who don't know, BookCon is a huge event that happens every year in New
York City at the Javits Center, and it is amazing for big fans of... books.
I had the amazing opportunity to listen to John Scalzi and Charlie Jane Anders among
other people, and that's where I initially heard of this book.
I always wanted to get into the heartier, more tech-y side of science-fiction as I've
kind of geared towards the more space opera end of things and this seemed like the perfect
way to start.
So this next book is not exactly new to the shelves, but Robert Jordan is one of my all
time favorite authors and so naturally I had to talk about this book because I haven't
read it yet, and I have...
I really need to!
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is nothing short of a masterpiece, which is finished
up by Mr. Brandon Sanderson at the end of the really really long series.
This story, New Spring, takes place before the wheel of time series, and it follows al'Lan
Mandragoran, if I'm saying that right, the character we heard a lot about in the wheel
of times series, but this dives a little more into his backstory which I'm really excited
to dive into.
Our next title is drumroll please.
I'll do it myself.
Inked by Eric Smith.
I initially picked this one up because I do some serious fangirling of Eric Smith on Twitter.
The other part was, truthfully, this story has a super cool concept.
In this world, tattoos were once an act of rebellion.
But now, they decide your destiny.
And so there's this magical ink that gets put into your skin and essentially it picks
your vocation for you.
This next one is Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson
Who I always want to call Erik Stevenson...
I've actually started and stopped this book several times and I've been in love with the
pages and the concept.
It's the first book in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, and it has won a gazillion
awards.
Anywho, needless to say, I am really looking forward to checking that out and of course
the next book in the series.
Our next one is The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss.
Like many fantasy fans, I've read Patrick Rothfuss' book The Name of the Wind, and the
second installation, which is A Wise Man's Fear, and loved them both.
And while he is still working on the the third and final installation, or maybe there'll
be more... hopefully... who knows?
While he is still working on those, he published this bad boy!
This novella takes place in the same world as the Kingkiller Chronicles, but it follows
a different character.
This story follows Auri's adventures in the Underthing, which is beneath the university
where Kvothe studies.
Anywhos, sounds super fantastic, and look...
Pretty short read!
So, could totally get through this in like a day, or a weekend.
I just can't wait!
Our next book is: The Six-Gun Tarot
This is the first book in the Golgotha Series by R.S.
Belcher.
I actually stumbled into the third book of the series titled, the Queen of Swords, and
I know people say, "don't judge a book by its cover" but the cover art is gorgeous and
I immediately wanted to read it, and therefore I took a look at this book.
This first book takes place in 1869 Nevada, and blends western and steampunk together.
Sounds super cool!
I can't wait to read it!
Our next book has the most amazing title, which is:
The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by Alexandra Bracken
Bracken!
Bracken!
That's not part of the title, that's her name.
She's got a really cool name.
I saw this particular story at BookCon for the first time, and was super intrigued by
the premise.
Prosper discovers that there is a demon inside of him, thanks to one of his ancestors making
and breaking a contract with a malefactor, which is a demon that makes a deal with humans
for eternal servitude.
When the demon awakes, he is intent on destroying Prosper's family.
And as each day passes, the demon takes more and more control over Prosper's body as he's
trying to fight back.
Anywhos, I'm looking forward to reading this middle-grade story.
The last in our list is the Dwarves by Markus Heitz.
This, is another gem I ran across in the bookstore.
I realized when I saw it, that I needed more dwarves in my life.
Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur are all wonderful, but an entire story on dwarves?
I dig this...
I could go for this!
And I'm not talking about Happy, Sneezy, and Dopey, and Doc!
I want the ones that fight with swords, or Axes...
This particular story follows orphaned Tungdil who was raised by humans.
He's a blacksmith, they slay orcs...
I mean, what more could you ask for?
On to our next section, which is honorable mentions!
Obviously, there isn't enough time to talk about every single amazing book piled up in
my less organized bookshelf that I want to read, so we want to have a few honorable mentions
of books that are worth noting in this book haul.
Stay tuned for a future iWriterly video of a bookshelf tour, to see some of the things
that I've already read and will fangirl about forever.
I think I'm going to order a second bookshelf tonight.
Our first book for the honorable mentions is
The Writer's Guide to Weapons by Benjamin Sobieck.
Now I know this isn't a traditional fictional story, but I think it's worth mentioning since
a lot of these are fantasies, and include weapons.
I picked up this particular gem at Writer's Digest's Annual Conference in New York City,
which was a blast!
And I had the pleasure of attending a session that Mr. Benjamin taught about specifically
including weapons in your fiction.
And as a writer and a reader, I thought this was super super fascinating about how to make
realistic warfare and talk about swords and stuff.
Our second honorable mention is: Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake
This is another darling I snagged at BookCon.
I'm a huge fan of Brenda's on account of her amazing Twitter writing contests such as #PitchWars
and #PitMad.
But I think the concept of the story is super fascinating, as it follows Gia, who along
with her friends gets sucked into a photograph and portaled to a library in France.
In addition to our top ten books in our book haul, and our honorable mentions, we have
a series continuation!
Ooooooohhhh.
I have a number of series I am currently reading, and super excited to read the next books.
Our first is Cress by Marissa Meyer.
Cress is the third novel in the Lunar Chronicles series, and is loosely based on the story
of Rapunzel.
The former two books are also loosely based on fairy-tale characters.
The first book in the series, is Cinder, which is based on Cinderella, and the second book
is Scarlett, which is based on Little Red Riding Hood.
Our next series continuation is The Sharing Knife Passage.
This is sort of the third book in the fantasy romance crossover series called the Sharing
knife.
The original stories were so long that they were broken up into volumes.
The first book was split into two parts: Beguilement and Legacy
The second book was split into: Passage and Horizon
In Beguilement, Fawn, the protagonist and farmer girl ran away from home after the man
who impregnated her said he would not acknowledge the child as his.
Fawn is attacked on her journey and saved by the lakewater patroller, Dag.
The two fall in love and face a bunch of tribulations and stuff on account of the different cultures
of farm to lakewater patrollers, and a super mysterious, (that I'm not going to give away)
magic that binds the two together.
The last on our series continuation is Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
This is the fifth installment of the Throne of Glass Series, which follows our main character,
Aelin Galathynius as she, Dorian and a bunch of other characters seek to bring peace to
their land.
So this is the end of our Book Haul 2017 video, only because I have a million other books,
and this feels like a good place to stop.
Stay tuned for our book reviews, and book shelf tour video's, along with our usual writing,
editing, querying videos, and other iWriterly stuff.
Thanks for tuning into our special iWriterly video, Book Haul 2017.
I'm your host, Meg LaTorre-Snyder, and if you like what you saw, like, subscribe, comment,
