What's the difference between hibernation and sleep? - Sheena Lee Faherty - Duration: 4:49.

Onboard the spacecraft, the astronauts preset the timer,

enclose themselves in capsules,

and fall into a deep hibernation

that'll carry them several hundred years into the future.

This is a familiar scene in many sci-fi films,

but could humans ever actually hibernate in real life?

Researchers interested in this question turn to the animal kingdom,

where hibernation is commonplace,

occurring in over 200 species that we know of.

Take the Arctic ground squirrel.

Native to the North American tundra and northern Russia,

this animal burrows beneath the permafrost

and slips into a state of suspended animation,

its body temperature plummeting to a frigid -2.9 degrees Celsius.

Others, like the female black bear, can multitask,

giving birth and lactating while they're hibernating through the winter.

The fat-tailed dwarf lemur prepares for its long dormancy

by gorging on food and storing the majority of its fat reserves in its tail,

doubling its body weight.

After hibernation, it emerges looking as svelte as ever.

So why do these animals go to such extremes?

Hibernation is a necessity,

a survival tactic for making it through the harsh winter months

when dwindling food and water reserves threaten survival.

For many years, experts believed hibernation happened

only in arctic and temperate environments.

But more recently, they've discovered animals hibernating

even in arid deserts and tropical rainforests.

As hibernation kicks in,

animals' heartbeats usually slow to about 1 to 3% of their original speed,

like the dwarf lemur's,

which drops from its usual roughly 180 beats per minute

to just around four.

Breathing also declines dramatically

to just one breath every 10 to 21 minutes in the lemur's case.

And black bears, like most hibernators,

don't urinate or defecate the entire hibernation season.

Hibernating animals appear to stay alive

by having just enough blood and oxygen moving around their bodies.

And scans of hibernating animals reveal that their brain activity

has just about flat-lined.

But hibernation isn't a long winter's nap.

As far as researchers know,

in lemurs and ground squirrels anyway,

the animals aren't even sleeping for most of it.

Hibernation is actually made up of regular bouts of reduced metabolic rate

and body temperature known as torpor.

Animals can be in torpor for a few days to five weeks,

after which they resume normal metabolic rate and body temperature

for about 24 hours,

before going back into torpor again.

The phenomenon is known as an interbout arousal,

and why it occurs is still a mystery.

The behaviors inherent in hibernation,

like going five weeks without sleep,

or dropping to near-freezing body temperatures

would be potentially fatal to non-hibernating species like us.

To find out how hibernators are able to do this,

researchers turned their attention to those animal's genomes.

So far, they've discovered that hibernation is controlled by genes

that turn off and on in unique patterns throughout the year,

fine-tuning the hibernator's physiology and behavior.

For example, ground squirrel, bear and dwarf lemur studies

have revealed that these animals are able to turn on the genes

that control fat metabolism

precisely when they need to use their fat stores

as fuel to survive long periods of fasting.

And the genes in question are present in all mammals,

which means that researchers could study hibernating mammals

to see how their unique control of physiology might help humans.

Understanding how hibernators deal with reduced blood flow

could lead to better treatments for protecting the brain during a stroke.

Figuring out how these animals avoid muscle deterioration

might improve the lives of bedridden patients.

And studying how hibernating animals control their weight with ease

could illuminate the relationship between metabolism and weight gain in humans.

And yes, more research in this area

might someday make human hibernation a real possibility.

Imagine our surprise if the key to intergalactic travel

turns out to be ground squirrels, black bears, and dwarf lemurs.

Gov Jerry Brown Regrets Open Borders After Nasty Surprise Found In His Mansion. - Duration: 4:55.

Gov Jerry Brown Regrets Open Borders After Nasty Surprise Found In His Mansion.

California Governor Jerry Brown, who errs on the Communist side of liberal, has been

one of the most prominent and outspoken advocates for open border policies which allow dangerous

criminal illegals to enter his state.

However, Brown just learned the dire consequences of these policies in a very personal way,

when he arrived home at his mansion to find a nasty surprise waiting for him.

Imagine Governor Jerry Brown's surprise when a dirty homeless man broke into his mansion

in Sacremento, because he figured the sanctuary state politician was "an open-door policy

kind of guy":

A homeless man who was arrested last month after breaking into California Gov. Jerry

Brown's home in Sacramento reportedly said he only tried entering the mansion, because

he figured the sanctuary state politician was "an open-door policy kind of guy."

The California Highway Patrol said 51-year-old Steven Seeley was arrested April 19, and treated

at a hospital for cuts he received while breaking a window to get out of the home in downtown

Sacramento, located about 10 blocks from the Capitol.

[Source: Fox News] In a jailhouse interview, Seeley said he ran

inside Gov. Jerry Brown's home on April 19 through an unlocked side door after being

frightened outside by a growling cat.

"He's an open-door policy kind of guy, so I figured the door would be unlocked, or

else I wouldn't have ran over there if I thought the door would be locked," said

Seeley.

Once inside, Seeley said he yelled out, telling the governor to hide.

He said that he then began to hear the growling again, so he hid in a closet.

"I can't get away; I'm in a little broom closet, so the only thing to do is to dive

through the window, so I dove through the window to get away," the homeless man explained

from behind bars.

Seeley said he heard what sounded like the roar of a large wild cat from a nearby garbage

can before running into the home.

He also said he was never approached by security before or after he entered the mansion.

Though he's never been diagnosed with a mental illness, Seeley admits he sometimes

hears things, but didn't want to take any chances in case the roar came from a legitimate

threat.

CHP confirms that a man who was "behaving erratically" trespassed inside the mansion.

"The Governor was not present and the First Lady was on an upper floor of the residence,

when the incident occurred and had no contact with the subject," CHP Spokesperson Fran

Clader said in a statement.

The mansion has a "robust" onsite security presence 24,7, according to Clader.

[Source: KCRA] The Golden State's homeless population of

more than 130,000 people is now about 25 percent of the nationwide total, and cleaning up after

the surging group is getting costly, topping $10 million per year, according to the state's

Department of Transportation.

Already heavily in debt, this is an issue that California can't afford.

You would think that with so many people in his state already homeless, Gov. Brown would

see fit to tend to that growing problem before opening California's southern border, to

throngs of illegal aliens the state's already burdened taxpayers cannot support.

However, Brown named California the very first "sanctuary state" in 2017, completely

bucking federal immigration laws.

Under threat of possible retaliation by the Trump administration, Gov. Jerry Brown signed

landmark "sanctuary state" legislation Thursday, vastly limiting who state and local

law enforcement agencies can hold, question and transfer at the request of federal immigration

authorities.

Senate Bill 54, which takes effect in January, has been blasted as "unconscionable" by

U.S. Atty.

Gen. Jeff Sessions, becoming the focus of a national debate over how far states and

cities can go to prevent their officers from enforcing federal immigration laws.

Supporters have hailed it as part of a broader effort by majority Democrats, in the California

Legislature to shield more than 2.3 million immigrants living illegally in the state.

[Source: Los Angeles Times] Clearly, the homeless man who supposedly heard

a growling cat, and subsequently decided to break into Jerry Brown's mansion to escape

from it has some mental issues.

But, will the governor rethink his open borders policies now that he has experienced first-hand

the consequences they can have?

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen if I were you.

If the murder of Kate Steinle wasn't enough to jar him from his liberal way of thinking,

I doubt this incident is going to change anything.

What do you think about this?

Health Benefits of Ginger - What is ginger good for? - Duration: 4:05.

Please Help Me Subscribe Channel . Thank You !!!!

You may know that ginger is a common ingredient in Asian and Indian cuisine, but did you know

that it's been used for centuries for its healing properties?

Ginger has a long history of health benefits, including relief from nausea, digestive issues

and pain.

The most commonly used part of the plant for medicinal purposes is the root or underground

stem, known as the rhizome.

It can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried as a spice, or used in the form of an oil

or as juice.

If you don't use ginger in your kitchen, here are 8 reasons why you might want to start!

1.

Ginger Relieves Digestive Issues

The phenolic compounds in ginger have been shown to help relieve irritation in the gastrointestinal

tract.

They help to stimulate saliva and bile production while allowing food and fluids to move through

the GI tract more smoothly.

In a study of 24 healthy individuals, taking 1.2 grams of ginger powder before a meal accelerated

emptying of the stomach, reducing indigestion by 50%.

2.

Ginger Relieves Nausea

Drinking ginger tea or even consuming raw ginger is a common and safe home remedy for

nausea, especially during cancer treatment or pregnancy and morning sickness.

A review of 12 studies that included a total of 1,278 pregnant women found that 1.1-1.5

grams of ginger significantly reduced nausea.

3.

Ginger Can Relieve Pain

A study conducted at the University of Georgia found that daily ginger supplementation reduced

muscle pain by 25%.

Ginger has also been found to reduce pain during menstrual cycles.

Researchers also believe that ginger is effective at reducing the day-to-day progression of

muscle pain.

4.

Ginger Reduces Inflammation

Osteoarthritis is a common health problem that involves the degeneration of the joints

in the body, causing joint pain and stiffness.

In a trial of 247 people with osteoarthritis of the knee, those who took ginger extract

had less pain and required less pain medication.

5.

Ginger May Reduce Risk of Heart Disease

In a recent study involving participants with type 2 diabetes, researchers found that 2

grams of ginger powder each day lowered blood sugar and led to a 10% overall reduction over

a period of 12 weeks.

High blood sugar is a major risk factor for heart disease.

With the effects of ginger on blood sugar, your risk of heart disease may be lowered

by at leas 10%.

6.

Ginger May Lower Cholesterol Levels

A 45-day study involving 85 people with high cholesterol concluded that 3 grams of ginger

powder each day caused significant reductions in cholesterol levels.

Researchers believe that ginger can aid in lowering cholesterol levels and reducing the

risk of heart disease.

7.

Ginger May Have Anti-Cancer Properties

A substance in ginger known as 6-gingerol has been studied as an alternative treatment

for several types of cancer.

Research on this theory is still being conducted, but one study found that 2 grams of ginger

extract each day significantly reduced pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in the colon.

8.

Ginger May Improve Brain Function

Oxadative stress and chronic inflammation are two factors that can accelerate the aging

process, and become a key driver of Alzheimer's disease and other age-related cognitive impairments.

Some studies suggest that the antioxidants and bioactive compounds in ginger can inhibit

inflammatory responses that occur in the brain.

In a study of 60 middle-aged women, ginger extract was shown to improve reaction time

and working memory, suggesting that ginger supports brain health in multiple ways.
